underline while texting - Motorola Droid 3

it is very annoying due to the fact then when I want to delete the whole sentence I can no longer just push the alt button and then delete. i used to do that a lot and its very helpful with texting. So does anyone have any ideas

I am also looking for a solution to this. My last phone (Nokia N900) you could just ctrl+backspace for whole words, or just ctrl+a (select all) then backspace but i can't seem to work out how to do this on the DROID3.

As far as I can this is a bug, and the only workaround is to choose Swype as your input method. The Droid2 has the same issue. It's an artifact of the auto-word-completion feature which is still enabled when the physical keyboard is in use.
I've tried changing the Multi-Touch keyboard settings (including the "device keyboard" section) to no avail.

Hooray changing to swype is genius ahaha works fine for me and i like swype anyways whenever I'm too lazy to slide out the keyboard.

Swype vs HTC_IME?

I recently discovered both and I'm not sure which one I like best. What does everyone else like?
I was the same way so I kept both. That way I can switch whenever I want to man. It's nice.
I have both, but my fallback is the T9 keyboard from HTC. Swype is a funky concept, but in the end, a qwerty keyboard is a qwerty keyboard to me. I don't need another one if I have a physical one already.
Swype.Its so fast to type.
Swype, because now I can easily text with one hand while driving.
HTC_IME is the best VK around.
Swype !!!
and the 1.16.12.5230.t version even better
Swype it is.having to tick every letter is just soo annoying.and if I choose to, I can still do this with swype. Plus its a thing ipod users envy
Swype is good enough that I would consider buying a phone without a physical keyboard.
when i have to type web addresses in, i go with the htc ime, othewise, swype all the way (on a MT3G)
i use swype to play with... honestly i'm faster with a qwerty keyboard (i use better keyboard) but swype really is something to behold.

tried the 1.16...... version?
its much better at the standard 'single tap' typing than the 0.5...
swype.
Most defintely swype beats the htc IME for me. It just so smooth and make sure you get the newer version! Honestly, its slower for me to open my keyboard anymore...Now i have actually decided to get the nexus because typing will be a breeze.
I just downloaded Swype, it is amazing. I can type much faster single handedly (don't drive and text!) than with HTC IME. It is much more forgiving, which considering my large fingers and the Dream's tiny screen, is absolutely great.

hmm, didn't even notice that
the version number in my sig is taken from the swype settings
may be they round it off
edit : oh, file shows as Swype-SwypeReference-HVGA-trial-release.1.16.12.5228.219 on mediafile
i switch between three input methods:
swype is my primary for email, sms and such when at work, home, or out and about. ...and to simply make iphone people drool.
android keyboard from nexus has taken over the roll that ime use to fill since it has speech to text so it serves as my input when in the car so i can respond to emails the same way i can with handcent sms...just talk to the phone and watch the words appear
when i end up needing to surf web for a while or input email addresses, i still find myself falling back to htc_ime.
I tried installing Swype-SwypeReference-HVGA-trial-release.1.16.12.5228.219.apk via ASTRO.. I already had the "version 1" installed, so it offered me to "upgrade".. and I went down that path until it said "Swype cannot be installed on this phone"
??
EDIT: I also tried Apps Installer, but that always FCs on me
EDIT2: I uninstalled previous version of Swype.. rebooted.. launched Apps Installer (no FC this time) and the new Swype installed.
love Swype.....
IMO better than HTC_IME, especially with different lang.
very accurate for me, even in Korean typing!!! Cool
I have tried every setting in Swype, but I keep getting a little pop up thing with symbols on it. I can't figure out how to get anything to type. I have gone through the instructions, but I guess I need to watch the tutorial.

Anyone else think the stock keyboard is still the best?

I've tried a lot of different keyboards on my phone and for a while I thought the HTC IME was the best and that's what I used as my primary keyboard, but on my last wipe I was feeling lazy and didn't install it and instead used the stock keyboard for a while and I was amazed at how much better it is!
I make way less errors on the stock keyboard, the key layout seems to make more sense, and the keys do a better job of changing based on context (such as changing the return key to a "Next" key in web forms or smile button in gchat). The HTC keyboard still looks the nicest, and I like that you can long press keys to get numbers and symbols, but I found it very annoying that while you can see the alternate symbols on the keyboard, pressing the alt key causes everything to shift over a key or two. I'm always chasing keys around!
I tried out Froyo for a while and the stock keyboard is getting even better! It shows common punctuation in the suggestion bar after completing a word, and it has a much nicer approach to adding new words to the dictionary. I hated how all my typos ended up getting added to the dictionary with the HTC keyboard.
Anyone else feel the same way?
I too have found the stock keyboard very capable. Especially for how accurate voice input is.
My only wish is that Google would allow you to enter a line break with the stock keyboard when composing an SMS.
I agree. Coming from an iPhone, I have no problems with the keyboard, and Froyo's keyboard is really nice!
Yeah the stock keyboard in Froyo is awesome, I still use Better Keyboard just because I like the look of it better and ive gotten used to the key placement, but stock is definitely awesome, once its themed I may switch to it. I dont use predictive text or anything like that though so those features dont really factor in for me.
I never got why the stock keyboard gets such a bad reputation. I wish you could pick different word choices after you move on from a word, but other than that I like it a lot.

Are you still using Better Keyboard with Froyo? I used it with 2.1, but since upgrading to Froyo, Better Keyboard doesn't seem to auto correct my words and isn't prompting me for alternate words like it used to. I'm uninstalled and reinstalled too and it hasn't made a difference.
I preferred Better Keyboard because of its key placement and the skins, but since I can't get the auto correct to work with Froyo, I haven't been using it.
Also using better keyboard here (on Eclair). Love the long press to get to most symbols. I find it better than the stock 2.1 keyboard.
Here's a good overview of the options out there:
http://www.androidcentral.com/android-centrals-keyboard-roundup
I think the default is some pretty mean beef. I like the customisability of HTC IME, but even a totally stock keyboard seems better. I wish I could extend the space bar so it was massive though, thats the ONLY errors i make.
I don't know if it's the best or not; it's certainly good enough that I haven't had to use any others...
Definetly not as good as the "better keyboard". Multi touch without a delay when using sound and vibration. Something the default keyboard can't do, not even the htc one.
I use the numbered 1-9 keyboard using T9 since its so fast. But I never had a problem with the stock android keyboard. Some say its not good and auto correct doesn't work but I found it works perfectly.
Just fly thru your words, don't even have to hit exact keys, and it gets close to all correct.

what he said.
honestly, i almost NEVER use stock anymore after using swype. in fact, i don't even use landscape anymore. all one handed, all fast, all the time.
swype is one of the first things i put onto a fresh flash.
and, when i do want a landscape keyboard, i use htc_ime.

I used swype for a while and it's pretty awesome. The best part about it is the fact that you can type quickly one-handed. Unfortunately I like to use voice input sometimes and there is no button for that on swype.
Better keyboard looks promising, but I actually haven't tried it. Maybe I will.
I still think that I can type as fast on the stock keyboard as I can with swipe. I find that I seem to spell out words as I type them, and swype forces me to think about the full spelling much earlier and it slows me down from time to time.
Tried stock, didn't like it. Then, SwiftKey, that was pretty awesome but not as good as Swype!
i really like smart keyboard pro. i really dislike having to do extra presses to get symbols :\ why cant the stock keyboard just let you hold and get a symbol?

Disagree. Was just talking about Swype over here
I really like Swype, but there is just one thing that really spoils it for me. Entering words and text is just great. Love the way it works and I find it satisfyingly easy to enter text.
BUT when I have to enter logins into dialog boxes or URLs in an address bar on my N1, everything turns to Sh1t for me. I know you can still peck keys, but I keep finding it adds the wrong characters and symbols. It becomes such a PITA that I have temporarily stopped using Skype and have gone back to stock.
What I would like is a simple gesture like 3 taps of the Swype button to toggle swyping on/off. Then I could temporarily have regular keyboard behaviour for these short periods when I am not entering words.
So for now, I am with the OP. I reckon Stock is best.

[Q] Vibrant without Android Keyboard...

So I have a Samsung Vibrant GT-i9000m from Bell Canada with the FFC. Some how I no long have the Android Keyboard in my list of input method's (long pres on text input field) or in settings -> Locale and Text -> Select Input Method -> Swype or Samsung Keypad (only). My phone is unlocked (i bought the unlock code form Bell directly) and I used the one click lag fix for rooting the phone. I'm unsure when I lost the Android keyboard but I know for a fact I never deleted or uninstalled it. I can only assume that the bell unlock code or the one click lag fix rooting app are the cause of the missing input method.
Does anyone know where I can download the Android Keyboard? I've searched a bit but Android Keyboard give a vast variety of results even on the app brain and market.
Many thanks in advance for any answers!
Swype or Samsung Keypad
that is correct
those are the default input methods, you can always install more if you want
like the HTC keyboard or the Moto Droid keyboard, or many other available out there
but of them all i prefer the swype keyboard better
I recall having a 3rd option "Android Keyboard". It has a mic icon in the bottom left corner i assume for speech to text. Kinda like the Iphones voice search that's what I'm looking for. Yes I strongly agree Swype is better but when I'm driving I wouldn't mind some speech to text or voice search.
I did find on forum.xda-developers .com under thread 709519 but its 114mb kinda big for a keyboard. (cant post URL)
I might be wrong and never seen the Android Keyboard option but I know I have seen screen shots of other peoples Vibrants with this 3rd option that I assumed was stock to android 2.1.
Even my google search widget doesn't have the mic icon for voice search.
vLingo it comes as part of the phone
you need to install it in Samsung Apps
it's free
it does voice control and voice dictation
needs some minor training, it can handle accents
OMG I had it all along and never tried the vLingo keyboard. Thanks so much! YOU DA MAN.

[Q] Disable Shift + Space = Lang on Keyboard dock?

I just bought my Galaxy Tab yesterday, and it's pretty awesome. I also bought the keyboard dock, and it's excellent except for one super annoying problem: If you hit space while holding shift, it changes the language. In my case, it doesn't do anything (Just says ENGLISH on the screen), but it's really annoying to have that pop up every time I type a sentence with caps or punctuation in it.
For example: Typing "WOW! THIS IS AWESOME!" would be easy. You just hold shift while typing the whole sentence. On the tab, at every space it acts as though I have pressed the Lang key on the keyboard. This only happens with the hardware keyboard.
I did some mucking around in system files (/system/usr/keylayout/), and noticed p1_keyboard.kl, but only the actual Lang key is mapped to LANG. When I commented that line out, my Lang key was disabled, but the Space+Shift still "worked" and popped "English" up on my screen. The Freedom Pro drivers have an option to disable shift+space, but the regular samsung keyboard does not. Any idea how to get rid of this incredibly annoying behavior?
Edit: I just noticed that this "feature" is documented in the manual. No way to disable it is mentioned.
Just a quick update: I've contacted Samsung Support via twitter, but they didn't have a galaxy tab available with a keyboard dock. Seriously. Samsung Support didn't have a galaxy tab with external keyboard to even test the issue. I'm trying e-mail next. Frankly, having shift+space change the language when there is a language button RIGHT NEXT TO THE SPACEBAR is insane.
I think I have to make my own solution to this one. Of course, I can't post in the developers section yet, so I can't really ask for help there either. I'm fairly certain that the solution isn't /system/usr/keylayout/p1_keyboard.kl because, while there is a LANG button mapped, disabling it merely disables the actual LANG button on the keyboard. Shift + Space continues to switch the language.
This is literally making me not use the keyboard, because if I type "I", and hold shift a bit too long, ENGLISH shows up on my screen. If I'm typing a sentence with lots of caps or acronyms, ENGLISH is on the screen pretty much the entire time because I'm holding shift. Any help at all would be appreciated.

Did you by chance get any answers to this issue? I am having the same issue and it's driving me nuts. Almost every sentence that I write I have to backspace and start over.
Hey everyone, I came across this post while searching for a way to disable the SHIFT+SPACE keyboard shortcut (Stupid!).
So, while it's default in Samsung Keyboard, other keyboards allow other options. I installed "Google keyboard", and now everything works great, and I don't have the annoying popup everytime I hold shift too long before a space!
Hello, I'm resurrecting this thread because shift space is still an issue in Samsung Keyboard. Gboard (what Google Keyboard is called now) solved this problem for me, too. -- Ronald Althenn, former Samsung call center analyst
I've installed GBoard, but Samsung Keyboard shortcuts still work. When I look at keyboard setting for my physical keyboard, I can see that both keyboard layouts (GBoard & Samsung) are present. I can't seem to find a way to force my device (Note 8) to only use GBoard layout.
Thoughts?
Sorry for the late reply. I dropped my phone recently and started having that same issue. Even with gboard installed, I am never going to need to change my language using shift space, ever, and yet even when I'm using sidesync just so I can see my screen, English pops up all the time and eats up my space. I am trying to find other ways of fixing this. I will post again soon.
---------- Post added at 02:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:27 PM ----------
Okay, I think I've got it. When there is an external keyboard attached in sidesync, you must use the Select Keyboard notification and choose Gboard. This is where the proper command hooks get installed. Shift space comes out as a space when I type using gboard. If you have a "Select External Keyboard" notification, don't change it there, because shift space still popped up English for me until I used the first notification.
This is insanely complicated, I know. I wish I was a Samsung dev; I'd submit a change to fix that. I'll have a job soon, I hope.

This issue is now more annoying than ever thanks to DeX forcing you to use the Samsung Keyboard.
You can manually disable the Samsung Keyboard via ADB, but doing so results in either:
* phone screen waking/blurring whenever clicking into a type field in DeX
* DeX hard crashing and requiring a wipe of app data via ADB if you try to force the on-screen keyboard in DeX from "phone" to "monitor" while Samsung Keyboard is disabled
Keep reporting this crap to Samsung until they at the very least add a simple toggle to disable the shift-space "feature."
OMG I HATE this stupid thing!!!!!!!!!! so much, I don't understand, if ctrl+space is switching lang already, wtf do you put something like shift (very common)! I HATE this so much to the degree I might retrun the whole thing
Finally they've changed that stupid thing. Now you can go Settings->General Management->Language and Input->Physical keyboard->Change language shortcut
Using a bluetooth keyboard with my S10+. I disabled the toggle you mention here, but shift+space still does nothing (literally nothing too, it doesn't say "English" or anything like that on screen when I push it).
My primary touch keyboard is G-Board as well.

[Q] A Perm Swype Prediction Bar?

Does anyone know how to make the Swype keyboard prediction bar a persistent/permanent item?
At the moment is likes to vanish when I've finished a word, which means it then needs to adjust how much screen space the app takes up.
This is quite frustrating because for instance it means the Google talk app "send" button moves down the screen a bit.
It makes me rage every day, drives me nuts.
Is there some way to force it to stay there all the time?
I'm on the Stock ICS with root.
****Solved, upgraded from German ROM to Singtel ROM.
I would love for it to remain persistent as well, even empty.
that is exactly what I want. :-/
thts annoying :X

Ok since You are a Note User, I will give you some alternative options to use with. These were the ones which I tried to use when I was in STOCK ICS with root.
1. Swype (which ofcourse you are using)
2. SwiftKey
3. SlideIT
4. Better Keyboard
Non keyboard Input Options:
1. Voice Actions
2. WritePad
So far I chose WritePad but after I ended up in LPF Based ROM, my built-in keyboard is good enough for me
If any of my posts help you, please press THANKS. The Best part is "Its free!". Peace xD
I'm confused by your reply.
None of it seems to address the option of locking the predictive bar in place at all times the swype keyboard is up.
I have bought and tried SlideIT and Swiftkey and neither keyboards are as good / Accurate as Swype in my view. (no idea if they have a locked in predictive bar)
lol
On a whim I upgraded the ROM from the German one to the Singtel one and now it does exactly what i want!
