Big problem. Suddenly my phone will not turn on. Sits at the white Galaxy S GT-I9000 screen and does not boot. When I put it into download mode and plug it into computer, its suddenly saying "USB Device Not Recognized".
What do I do? PC won't recognize it, it wont boot. can't flash it.....I'm freaking out here...
Did you flash anything to it or root it?

Hi Rick. Try to re-install samsung usb drivers. during this time, take out the battery from the phone. once finished installing the drivers, put back the battery into the phone. Go into downloading mode. Fire up odin, put in the necessary firmwares + pit files. Once done, then CONNECT your phone to the usb port of your computer.
Hope it's okay.
Edit: Let's hope that it is the computer usb drivers are corrupted. Alterntively, if you still can't do it, try it on another pc.
Nope. I was rebooting it to flash XXJPC to it, but couldnt do so because it was saying that USB message and wouldnt detect it. So I went into recovery, did a factory reset, and now it wont boot.
Another computer does the same thing *tears*
*BUMP*
Lets try a different route. I will pay a generous sum of money to anyone who offers to and does manage to fix this for me?
rick, looking at this, if your usb is not recognised, it is either the pc or the phone usb port might be damaged.
if it is a hardware issue, then use the bounty to get it fix.
I was at that same point with my vibrant. After failed attempts of getting into download mode using buttons, here's what I did.
Download and install samsung usb drivers and android sdk.
Plug into the computer and use adb to get into download mode (adb reboot download).
Then flash with odin.
Doing that worked for me when nothing else would. Try it ?

I can get into download mode just fine.....my pc just doesnt recognize the usb device. tried 3 differente pc's, 2 running win7 and one running xp.
Did you install usb drivers on each of the machines?

I installed the samsung USB driver executable. and I also tried to use those drivers that it installs to manually update the "unknown USB device" in device manager, but they won't take.
Try uninstalling all drivers, then stick a MicroSD in your phone before plugging it into the usb.
Assuming you have Samsung Kies in your PC, try to upgrade it at 1.5.1.10074_45.
How long do you wait the boot?? The first boot after flash is very long, wait at least 5 minutes with flashing "S".
I did not just flash anything. My phone got really hot and laggy (as I was using it while charging it via USB port) and so I rebooted phone in an attempt to resolve the lag. when I did, it would not go past the WHITE Samsung Galaxy S I9000 screen, does not get to the flashing S screen.

if i understood you correctly, you have two separate problems:
a) your phone does not boot up
b) your phone is not recognized by any computer when plugged in
could be a coincidence, but probably is not. i'm guessing your bootloader got screwed up somehow. if it is a coincidence, it could be that your usb port on the phone is effed, or your usb cable is dead. try first using a different cable and see if your phone can be recognized by any computer. perhaps then you can go into download mode and reflash.
also, have a look at this post, might help you (although, if your usb is effed, there's not much point in trying any solution that involves your phone being connected to a computer): http://androidforums.com/780720-post3.html
EDIT: also, have your tried the obvious stuff, like pulling battery?
I ve seen many threads with the white screen problem ... it has in most cases been the drivers ... you desinstall all drivers from pc using Kies option for resinstall the drivers ... then you pull the battery off few sec (give it a min or two) then you get to download mode and you flash the beast ... dont connect your phone before launching odin or else it will not be recognized ...
for the few other people who didn't manage to fix it ... it was a hardware failure
That post you linked, is worth a try. But its for a motorola.....Where do I get my SGS bootloader to use instead?
ohh you were implying to try to use the motorola usb drivers?

I never said anything about a white screen. and I am not uneducated on flashing SGS, or using Odin. Far from it. My phone was first showing USB symbol when it wasnt plugged into USB port, then phone started running really hot while charging and got really bloated like it was overheating. So I rebooted and its now force closing at the first boot animation. I can get into download mode and recovery, but will not recognize in any of the 3 computers all running different versions of windows on them, with either of my USB cables that I tried.
My phone will go into download mode but it is not recognized by my PC. When I look under device manager is shows "other devices" with Gadget serial as the submenu. I have installed the drivers for the phone and every time I plug the phone in it says it needs to install drivers. It then does not find them. So I do it manually and it still says the drivers are not installed. Like I said my phone will go into download mode. If I just let it boot up it goes to recovery screen and it will not let me do anything from there. It says hit the power button to proceed but it doesn't click on it. Any ideas????
Try the drivers from here
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SGH-I897ZKAATT
If it still gives you a message saying no drivers click on it it should give you an option to choose the drivers. Navigate to c drive, program files, samsung, usb drivers. This worked for me

Did you open odin prior to connecting the phone

So, I think I broke my captivate. No, scratch that, I KNOW I broke my captivate. I think it's just software bricked but I'm not sure. Here's what's going on:
I rooted my captivate, and installed CWM. I flashed Serendipity 2.0 and that was fine. It booted, and I downloaded ROM Manager and went to partition the SD card. It rebooted, showed the AT&T screen, and froze on a black screen with white letters that says:
"GALAXY S
GT-I9000
SAMSUNG"
Holding down any combination of the volume buttons and turning on the phone does not go into recovery. It goes to the same screen as above.
The only way (via buttons) that i can get into download mode is to pull the battery and cable, put the battery back, hold down both volume buttons, and plug in the USB. However, when in download mode, windows says: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."
On the other hand, if I plug USB in while it's frozen at the "GALAXY S GT-I9000" screen, windows and Odin DO recognize it. When I click start in odin, it gets stuck at "File Analysis..." though.
I would really appreciate any help getting this captivate running again. What can I do here?
Desk top or lap top, have you tried different ports, different drivers. You can recovery from where you are. Where did you get the drivers from? What ports are you using

I got the drivers from the 32-bit link here. I've tried both on a windows desktop and a macbook pro using VMWare Fusion for virtualization. I've tried all the USB ports, including the ones on the back of the tower

I am able to open Odin. Odin (and Windows, for that matter) only recognizes my device when it's frozen at that black screen. I attached a picture of it. It does not recognize my device when it's in download mode

Do not install save files to desktop. When your phone is in dl mode and plugged into the rear port of your pc click on the error message. Direct the computer to the driver files you just downloaded. This has worked for some

OK, got the new drivers and saved them to my desktop.
It's windows XP, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to point XP at those drivers. It pulls up the "Hardware Update Wizard" but it won't use the files. There are 3 .inf files, which is what the wizard wants. If I try to use any of them, it says: "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware"

Ok, I don't remember if Serendipity installs with debugging enabled, but when the phone is in the state above and recognized by Windows can you send adb commands to the phone? Particulary 'adb reboot recovery'.

I don't have the android SDK installed on that computer. Give me a minute and I'll find out
So, the phone does not respond to adb. "adb devices" returns a blank line. "adb reboot recovery" returns "error: device not found." I get the same result whether it's in download mode or frozen on the GALAXY S splash screen
Device manager shows the phone as "SAMSUNG Android USB Composite Device" when it's frozen at that screen, but as "Unknown Device" when it's in download mode.
How can I force XP to use specific drivers?
Edit: I just uninstalled the drivers and let windows find them on its own. It found and installed:
Driver Provider: SAMSUNG Electronics Co., Ltd.
Driver Date: 5/12/2010
Driver Version: 5.2.0.4
Is that the right driver version?

No, odin needs to see your phone.
What cord are you using, is it oem
it's the cable that came with the phone.
I don't think the cable's the problem though, because both odin and windows DO recognize the phone in its frozen state... i guess i could be wrong about that
Just a shot in the dark, but if inserting the battery with USB+vol-up-down gets into download mode, how about inserting the battery while the volume buttons + power are pressed.
Do you know what bulks you are on? Located under battery, I am 1008

yeah, that also gets it into download mode. It doesn't change how windows reacts to it though... "Unknown Device"

Do you have access to any other windows pc? My first experience with odin I could bout get my phone recognized. Switched to another cpu, bam. I believe you have a mac as will but I an not sure that will work even with the vm
I asked about your build because 1010 has issues with the odin one click. Did not want to see you work for hours only to find port you need another program
Hello
I have a captivate running continuum v4 (ecliar/froyo) bootloaders
I have tried Odin 1.3 with the secure.zip to not flash the boot loaders, my phone is recognized in normal mode on both my desktop running window 7 and my laptop running ubuntu 11.04, I can not get either to recognize my cappy in download mode trying odin and windows 7 I get unrecognized usb device I plugged my usb cable directly into the mother board no hubs changed ports no good same error
Tried on my laptop with heimdall and get failed to detect compatible device, I have flashed with odin before to return to stock to change roms with no issues i can not get these computers to see it in download mode I know I am in download mode it says download mode and has the yellow digger guy
any help would be great
Thanks
Holy punctuation, batman!
This may seem like a silly question to ask, but do you have your device in download mode and already plugged in before you open ODIN? If so, it won't detect that way and you need to have ODIN open first before you plug it in. If that doesn't solve anything then try the regular ODIN that does flash bootloaders.
Thanks I did start Odin and heimdall first then I go to download mode ans plug the cable in. I also tried Odin one click and nothing windows does not recognize the USB device
Error happens
I have 4 motherboard USB and tried them all

Huh. I'd reinstall the phone drivers along with ODIN and try it again, maybe you got a bad download. If that doesn't do anything, then I can't figure out what's wrong.
I will try that funny thing is that is the same machine I have used before to flash and the same Odin one click I've used before my only windows machine all others are Ubuntu Linux also in Linux if you type lsusb it shows the USB devices connected but in download mode it does not show anything Samsung
thanks for your help

*Be sure you plugged your tablet to your PC with USB and you're seeing "Phone->/!\->Computer" screen.
*if you re running windows be sure you installed usb drivers
*install heimdall command-line tool
*type "heimdall close-pc-screen" into the terminal
*watch the magic happens.
