Hey there guys,
I've had my Galaxy S for about a month now and thinking that its about time to get rid of 2.1 and go for the big 2.2.1 jump.
I just want a stable, fast and reliable version that I can get a speed fix installed on and I want battery percentage.
With so many ROMs out there can someone reccomend a good basic stable ROM to update to? And as a newbie is there a easy walk through that I can follow.
I've that there is a couple of gingerbread releases out there. Are any of them official stable versions for the Galaxy S?

Js8 + rom (most people go for darky 9.5)

From my own experience I can recommend Criskelo Rom - stable, reliable, fast.
But really, you should choose on your own because there are some differences
People would call me boring, but I like stock JS8 + Voodoo Kernel
I like Doc's JS8 because of the kitchen and they always work flawless and are super fast. This way i get what i want the CSC/Modem for my region and only the apps i want. I used only two ROM's Darky and Doc and i prefer Doc due to customization and actually find it much faster then DArky even though Darky's has a higher Quadrant score. Main reason for me not to use Darky is im in Canada and the ROM is more or less geared for europe.
I have never had slowness/lag problems, everything is quick and snappy and this is with lagfix off. Using Speedmod K13c with recommend tweaks on and no lagfix.
When official 2.3 comes out from samsung that is the only time i will update as its PREFECT right now.
+1 for Doc's ROM.
I like that you can customize it the way you want it, choosing the modem, csc, kernel, apps, etc. So you can just install the ROM from CWM and that's it, all working in one go.
I have Doc's JS8 with Damian's Kernel with all ext2, and it works great, IMO, smooth, no lags ever, great battery life. All I ever wanted.
HOW? You'll need CWM to install it (You'll need to flash a kernel with it using Odin if your phone doesn't have it yet.). Just go to romkitchen.org and customize your own ROM with all you want/need, download the generated zip file into your SD Card and install it. Simple as that.
Using
Rom: - Doc V11.1 - ZSJPK,
CSC: - XEU
Kernel: - Damian v1.3 beta 3 (EXT 2)
Modem: - ZSJPG
Undervolt: - 25mv (not stable for anything higher......my phone issue)
Overclock: - 1.280 Ghz
Stable, fast and smooth. Battery life is good as well.
Are you already rooted? If not SuperOneClick works well with stock 2.2.
Next, the easiest kernel to flash as a firsttimer using Odin is definetly Speedmod. Hardcore's instructions are clear and exact. This will give you Clockwork Mod.
Finally, build yourself a ROM in Doc's Kitchen. You can control exactly what elements are installed and the walk throughs linked to the main Kitchen thread make it dead simple.
After you have used one of Doc's ROMs for awhile, if you wish to you can try one of the more baroque custom ROMs like Darky's.

Another + for the Rom Kitchen and big selling point is that the forum is not littered with posts saying this rom broke my phone .

I for one really like Serendipity 6.3! It´s stable, fast and goodlooking! Its GB themed btw.
hi guys... im new here... i just installed the xwjvb firmware of gingerbread on my galaxy i9000, and i wonder wich kernel will be the best with this version, and with criskelorom, because i really like this rom...

You can try the kernel from "hardcore"!

You need to explain "best kernel". Regarding stability? Speed? Security? Features?
There is no kernel to which you can say "best kernel". Every kernel has it's positive sides and negative sides.
For example: A kernel is fast and has a good stability but the battery lifetime isn't so good. Another kerenl isn't fast and not hast not so a good stability but there is a good battery liftime.
You have to test which kernel is the best for YOU!
i think you need to try a FUGU mod kernel, it have Voodoo Sound etc. Speedmod dont have it
CF root 3.1
Tweaks app rocks
Iam tired of looking for fixes , every rom has very bad bugs, miui was the best for smoothnes , but i can't use it with that strong power hog , i can barley make 5 hours screen time with Automatic brightness and no Apps running in background , also the sound quality of speakers are very low
Can you please recommend me the fastest / snappiest , smoothest ROM and kernel for Galaxy S ??? iam now on Miui 1.9.9 , glitch kernel V11 , iam not satisfied at all
i miss tons of calls and i can't hear it ring in my pocket lol ! very very power hungry rom

I'm afraid that you could not find an answer for that question , cause i also tried asking the same question and ended up at Jetpack ROM+Sempahore, but you yourself have to try !!
Human's are weird beings, so go ahead an try the rom's,kernels that meet your prerequisites !!
Hope that was helpful!
Yeah, just try several differnet roms and kernels and decide which you like best. I suggest using something based on stock Samsung rom like JVR. IMHO right now roms based on 2.3.4 JVR are smoother and more stable than MIUI and CM7. I for one haven't had any issues with the battery for quite some time
Want something simple , Fast, Bug free, ?
Romkitchen.org Got my misses SGS running GB 2.3.4 JVR.. rooted, de-odexed, with Speedmod kernel.
its great.
Im also a MIUI User, some things BUG me, but i cant tear myself from it, I love the customisation.
Got final hybrid rom with latest talon kernel and acid tweaks getting 3200 in qaudrant !
i am just wondering is it worth going to jvs from jvr ?

Which ROM?
I suggest you to get a ODEXed ROM, as it runs smoother. Most deodexed ROMs I tried get slower from time to time. Deodexing is only good for theming, but I recommend you stock theme as it is the most clean. So to have less problems (RAM scripts and tweaks often cause instability) I recommend you to get Stock JVR, semaphore Kernel and if you need some extras from custom ROMS get "Stock +" Mod from $omator. JVS seems to have problems with Wifi and DHCP, so JVR is the better choice for the moment.
If stock ROM is looking to boring for you, you can also get Simplicity which is also very performant and has a great addon creator for theming and additional system apps.
I am now running on Tornado, stability, speed and battery are good, but some apps like calculator and calendar have been stripped, Kernel is running peaks up to 1440 Mhz and it is also not supported here.
So the conclusion for your questions answer would be:
1. Stock JVR ROM with Semaphore and Stock+ 1.5 odexed
2. Simplicity 0.40

Thanks for the reply and the effort , i think STOCK rom alone is just too boring for me and not even enough , i will try Tronado rom as alot of people been using it , and iam not a fan of over clocking as i have too much problems already lol
also i have scripts and they are not reallying doing anything harmfull like Supercharger script
I have now moved to jetpack jvs

Hi to all,
I want to try a custom gingerbread ROM on my new OB. My current stock ROM is Froyo v10d.
Any recommendations?
Zeus v1 by Huexxx or Redy2006 or Novav11 or other mods?
Thanks.
U can try Zeus or redy's rom. These are more stable than cm as of now. Nova 11 is a kernal for cm7 not mod.

I'm proud of you, you don't come here and ask for a time...
Yess there are different custom ROMs like Zeus ROM by huexxx, which mainly is a rooted stock rom, with some tweaks applied. Then there is Redy's repack of rooted stock v20n and some deodexed (google it, but not important for a beginner) versions of rooted, stock GingerBreak (GB), then there is CM7 in different versions (some cherry picks and customizations), then we got Nova ROM, which is a HIGHLY tweaked and optimized Froyo based OS, and stock GB and Froyo ROMs.
You can find em all by using the search (upper corner on the right side), or by going here and scroll down (use mouse) sarcasm btw
Zeus: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1454274
Redy's repack: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441901
Nova: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161015
Choose WHATEVER U like best! Everyone will suggest something else, since he/she prefers something else (speed, stability, battery performance, ...) Just flash em, try em and if you dont like it, try another one, noone can tell ya, what YOU like best...
Hope I could help you, if so there is a thnx button down there
Thanks for your reply.
I prefer battery on a ROM. I will give GB ROMs a try because GB they say has battery enhancement features the froyo.

Update: I updated my OB to Zeus v1 and this rocks. Very good battery compared to froyo.
Thanks guys.
i'm using xanadu rom based on redy's rom and i'm very happy. No bugs, no FC, good battery usage. I'm using it because I was searching for an original not touched LG rom, with root, but without LG stuff. Is refined lite version from 2º post.

I use Zeus V1 and its faster and clean (little lite) i recommend this one!!
Hello, i want to ask you which Touch Wiz ICS ROM is best For Note as im deciding between Rocket ROM and Cosmo ROM...
Im looking for Battery life and tweaks mainly......
Thank you
Battery life is great on stock ics latest.
Tweaks and mods can always be done by yourself without including any unwanted.
Well since i dont know how to do those tweaks im sticking to custom and no battery life on latest ICS wasnt so good for me
hmm. may be this will be a little help
