I just bought a Galaxy S from ebay and am facing this problem. Everything works fine on the phone and it doesnt look like there is any water damage. When I try to make a call the screen goes completely blank. I cannot disconnect the phone or do anything since the screen is blank. The only thing that I can do is remove the battery and install it again. Based on my research it seems like its a proximity sensor. I even went ahead downloaded Z-deviceTest and all hardware seems fine. I also upgraded to the official 2.3.3 from Samsung so I dont have a custom ROM, no root nothing! What can it be? Should I ask the seller for a refund or there are any tweaks for it. Any help is appreciated.

I'm not an expert, but seems related to a faulty proximity sensor indeed...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I am pretty positive that it is the proximity sensor as when I insert the headset calls can be made without the screen going blank. I dont have a screen protector and I tried to put some compressed air to see if that changes anything.
When making a call and the screen goes blank can you cover the proximity sensor for a while and see if its turning on the display? I kinda have the same issue sometimes and covering the sensor would normally do the job.
Sent from my SGS using XDA Premium
Same problem here, seems that plugging headset does the job. It is kind of lose or lose situation, even turning off (any idea how?) proximity sensor would not help as screen would be touched by ear Any other solution anyone? Or some kind of calibration? Check? Most applications from marked I have checked are crashing or showing 5cm from sensor regardless.

I have replaced the lcd/digitizer on my htc sensation xl and my proximity sensor has stopped working. Every time i make calls it goes to a black screen and sometimes the battery needs to be removed just to get it to turn back on. i was wondering if there was a way to disable the sensor through the software? or completely replace it?

i don't have any idea about the proximity sensor ,but the same thing happened to me ,when i make a call my screen shuttdown and it comes black ,i tried diffrent roms but nothing changed so i decieded to sale the phone .
i posed a post about that and dont receive any proposition or help ,with you ,we are tree presons suffuring from this bug .
i didn't sale the phone yet but before that i will taste one last possibility who is to flash my phone with Ruu ,until that time i wish you a good luck and if i found something which fix it i will post it here .
i once had the issue with screen protector on, but once i took it off, it worked fine.
definitely gotta be the screen's problem, it has nothing to do with softwares.
maybe you can try this app to disable the prox sensor http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/proximity-screen-off_pjwz_download.html
if the app works for u, rmb not to touch the screen when u are making a call.

ok ,i will try this app and i will see if the phone respond positively .
I have a HTC Sensation XL and have also found the same issue when replacing the screen, both the speaker and Proximity sensor stopped working. After looking around for a while i found the comments on this site from a guy that obviously has come across the issue often:
psytechrepairs.tumblr.com/page/6
It sounds like a common occurrence that they fail with a screen replacement. I've also found that the light sensor and proximity sensor seem to both be on the same removable replaceable board (some sell it as a light sensor & others sell as a proximity sensor but they are both together):
www parts4repair.com/htc-sensation-xl-sensor-light/
Hope this helps.
I know this is an old thread however I have found a solution which i would like to share.
When replacing the lcd the way to fix the proximity sensor is to cover BOTH parts of the proximity sensor with Scotch tape and color the Scotch tape with a black Sharpie felt-tip pen.
works 100%
Hi,
sorry for posting here after so much time, but I have a problem. I smashed my display and ordered myselve a new one. Once I have changed it, the phone looked like everything is working just fine. Than I noticed that my Google Play Store is crashing, and a few apps were on my phone that I have deleted months ago.
My phone is ROOTED!!!
I decided to flash it again, the problem with crashing Play Store was solved.
After I realized my phone is acting crazy, first when I call someone the display goes black, and I cannot hang up or something. It looks like the proximity sensor failure. And even worse, sometimes the phone acts just like someone was using it, it writes opens apps, just like when someone is using the phone.
Any ideas???
Hey guys so I'm having the following problem, during a call when I put the phone near my ear and the screen turns off, sometimes the phone stucks, what I mean is the after I remove the phone from my ear the screen remains turned Off and the buttons do not respond.. But the call is still working.. I had gueste rom then I changed to cyanogen but the problem is still there...
Unresponsive phone perhaps, because as far as I know, nothing of the sort happened to me ever.
Also, does the screen light up when you end the call...let's say by using power button?
Not likely, but I'll mention anyway, check if anything is blocking the proximity censor - holding habit, cellphone case etc.
Similar issue, any way to disable the proximity senzor?

I have pretty much the same problem, the screen remain turned off after i remove the phone from my ear and i can't activate the screen or press any buttons until the other person terminates the call.
I run a proximity test from the Hidden Menu and the sensor detects as NEAR all the time even though nothing is in front of it.
I reinstalled several roms and i still encounter the same issue therefore it must be a hardware problem.
I would like to specify that i don't use a screen protector therefore the senor is not blocked in any way.
Is there any way to disable the proximity sensor completely?is there a application or a setting for that?

I have had the same problem, with many roms. I think if you are on some of the ICS roms, you will have to expect some bugs, like this. I am now on Temaseks build 135.1 with his kernel and I dont have any of these bugs. It seems ICS for our P990 is to be expected soon, so try a ROM as close to stock as possible and wait for our ingenious developers to get the last drivers working and you will see a lot of bugs disappearing. I would not recommend you to disable additional hard/software.
One app that has helped me though, with some of the ICS issues, is AnTuTu CPUMaster. A free app in Play and it allows you to set your minimum clockspeed a little higher than standard, I set mine around 400Mhz and it took care of many of the little bugs related to phone not reacting according to expectations.
Good Luck
Have the same problem and man... its a huge pain...
I am on the official CM7 latest release. I used to be on temasek's one and did not encounter the problem. As I can;t change ROMs these days, any quick fix, calibration app that would do the trick? Thanks!
About a couple weeks ago I cracked the digitizer(touch screen) on my Lg Thrill and replaced it. Before doing this everything was fine with the phone...I upgraded to GB and it is also rooted but like I said everything was working just fine until I replaced the digitizer. Now every time I make or receive a phone call the phone goes black like it was close to my ear. This only happen if I answer the call and if I make a call it happens right away. The phone is still on and the calls go through but the phone goes black and is useless and I can't even hang it up until the other person hangs up. Not even pressing the power button on the top helps. I have checked and nothing is blocking the sensor on the front of the phone and the new digitizer I got from ebay but again it is a perfect fit and nothing is blocking the sensors...Any Ideas or suggestions? anything would be a great help thank you!

The sensor that the phone uses in order to register face proximity is just to the left of the forward facing camera. Ensure this is connected nice and solid (reseat the wire if necessary) and make sure there is no dust in it as this will likely cause it to behave as it has. Simply replacing the screen won't do this, but improper cleaning before replacing the screen could. You may have to tear the phone down again just to reseat the screen itself.

hmm i had the same issue BUT mine would do it when i cracked the digitizer, which is weird.. replacing my digitizer fixed the issue or it just cleared up itself, try resetting the phone.. Or like zombie said, Tear it down and clean the connectors and sensors

I have taken the phone completely apart and used a can of compressed air to clean it I double checked the sensor connector and made sure there was no dirt or dust in or around the connections. I put the phone back together and made a test call...still doing the same thing
But I did notice that when I made a second test in a dark room the phone did not go black and when I moved the phone close to a light the phone went black....needless to say I am so confused now more then ever. I did a third test and the same thing happened. So any other ideas as to what may be going on??? Seems like the sensor is working no? just in reverse??? Maybe the tint in the new digitizer is too dark? but this still makes no sense as to why the phone goes black when it gets exposed to light. Anyway any other help would be great right about now THANK YOU!
Hi,
I just got my XZ a few days ago and experience only one issue: When doing a call the display turns off immediately, but when I put the phone away it's still off and doesn't turn on again. Service menu says the proximity sensor is turned on.
Anyone else with this problem and maybe the solution?

Most of the time with proximity sensor not functioning is because some Screen Protector is blocking it.
Make sure your custom screen protector isn't blocking it first, then if it still doesn't work properly maybe it's a hardware failure, should contact SONY then....
If it's the sensor or the screen protector (which has cut outs for the sensor), then why does it turn off the screen correctly the moment it put the phone to my ear?
It was the screen protector. Strange, other people don't have any issues with it.
So sorry Sony, your are great
Might be a little bit late, but maybe for others
worked pretty well on my Samsung S4.
download the app "proximity fix" from the playstore and run it.
Job done.
Hope that helps you or anyone who stumbles upon this!
When I am in a call, putting the phone to my face turns the screen off using the proximity sensor. However, removing the phone from my face does not turn the screen back on. Nothing turns it back on even if I push all the buttons or hold them or do anything unless the other person hangs up. I cannot remember when it started....before or after the recent update.....but it did start very recently. Any ideas? If I turn off the proximity sensor during calls it works fine by locking and unlocking the screen with the buttons.

Is anything covering the front facing camera, or light sensor? Like a case, bad screen protector, etc....
Does your front facing camera work just fine as a camera?
How about air gestures? Do they work?
I'm asking these things because it seems your proximity sensors aren't working properly. Your phone thinks it's next to your head all the time, so it's not waking the screen until the other person ends call. We need to find out which one is acting up and why.
The front camera works, but in my office it seems VERY sensitive to light. The lights are glaring heavily. I never use the front camera so I don't know if that's normally how it was. Air gestures work when the screen is on (swiping left and right to view my photos), but the quick glance won't work when the phone is locked. The weird thing is that quick glance works when I do the "try it" tutorial only.

Ok now it seems quick glance DOES work when the phone is off....I just couldn't do it correctly.
Main problem still exists though.

I was thinking that, but I'm tempted on resetting my phone and seeing if that helps. The problem is that I would lose all my app data and I'd hate to deal with that.

Unfortunately this sounds like a bad proximity sensor. This can be verified by testing the sensor by dialing *#0*#
I had this happen to my last Note 3. The only difference was I could turn the screen back on with the home button.

I tried that *#0*# test and I can activate the proximity sensor, but it seems to stay on after that.
This is a known issue with our phone. I had this issue myself. Plenty of times. Just call ATT and ask for a replacement.
Yeah I just found this:

It's not a software issue use canned air and blow by the speaker and the headphone jack als o press on the back of the phone . This has happened to me

i stumbled upon this thread and took my phone apart and sure enough there was lint in it. in the dial pad using the *#0*# method, when i covered the sensor the screen would light green, vibrate, and stay that way after i moved my hand away. i cleaned it and everything is perfect!!!
