Please help. I have a few questions.
I have recently installed Titanium Backup on my Captivate and i accidentally converted the system messaging app (SMS/MMS) to a user app. It was not backed up. It no longer appears as an app in titanium backup. Can not find it anywhere. The messaging icon has disappeared from my home screen. I opened my contacts and selected a person to send a text and hit "send message" button and got an error message saying " the process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. I had to force close. I then performed a Factory Data Reset in hopes that my phone would return to the "out of the box" state. No luck.
My phone is rooted of course. Froyo 2.2
Through some investigating i learned that my phone can be booted into recovery mode, which i did. No luck. No update.zip file exist. What do i do? Thanks in advance for your help.
This really should be in the q&a but can't you use titanium to convert it back to a system app? If not just download a 2.2 rom and pull the mms.apk from it and use root explorer or similar app to move it to system/app

After dealing with frustration after frustration with apps and HC, I decided to switch over to CM7. I backed everything up with Titanium Backup Pro then did a nandroid, then installed CM7 release 29. Everything went great with the install but I can not restore any of my backed up apps.
When I go to my backup/restore list, then select an app to restore, I get the dialog for app only or app + data. If I hit app only, it comes back and says that "App restore complete" but when I look at my drawer, the app is not there and in TB Pro, it still has the line through the listed app. If I hit restore app + data, I get the message App + Data restore failed. I've tried downloading the apps from the Market, then trying to just restore the data but that doesn't work either. I get the message that says it's complete but when I load the app the first time, no settings have been changed.
I also tried going into root explorer, changing the /system/app directory to R/W but that doesn't seem to make a difference. I've updated su and busybox from within TB and using the stand alone apps. I've tried unmounting and remounting the sd card. I've tried rebooting. Nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?
I have the nandroid so I can go back to HC and try an alternate backup method but I'd love to get this just to work.
The version of Titanium Backup that I am using is 3.7.4.1.
Thanks.

There are three options in the Problems? menu.
Check Wiki
Update Busybox
Update Superuser
I looked at the wiki and it didn't provide an answer to this problem. I updated Busybox again and Superuser was already updated.
I have TB set to keep 3 backups. I went and did another backup then verified all backup files. Over 100 files, including some that I just backed up under CM7, came up corrupt.
Any ideas why the majority of files backed up are corrupt? Clearly depending on TB to backup apps on the Nook was a bad idea.

I'm having this problem as well. TB has never worked on any of my roms. I usually try to do a lot of searching before I post, I'm usually not the first to have problems. But I can't seem to find a solution anywhere.
I think you have to go into settings and into application settings then tick the box to allow unknown sources.

If i unroot the device and then do a data factory reset will that work?
If you have a 2.2 rom in your computer you can look for the .apk and just run it from the phone.
Get a file explorer that has root access (root explorer for example) You will have to mount system r/w which if you're using root explorer is a button on the top right.
navigate to /data/app and see if mms.apk is there. If so long press it select move, navigate to /system/app and paste it in then reboot.

Android Version 2.3.7
Flashed Cyanogen 7.1.0
Kernel Version 2.6.35.12

After flashing ROM and installing google apps, I get "Server error, Retry" message when trying to connect to Android Market. Doesn't matter if I try connecting using 3g or wifi. When I connect to the Market using my computer, I see all my apps listed as "installed". When I choose to install a new app from the Market using my computer, it shows that it's being sent to my phone, but my phone never gets it. Anybody know what's going on?
Nothing Google is working. Typing a search in the google search box forces web browser to close. Reset phone and entered info for google account, but I get the same error message.
Try this:
Go to Settings>Application>Manage Apps>All
Then scroll down and look for the Market app. Press the app, force stop, then clear data. Do a normal reboot just to make sure. Then see if that fixed it.

Yeah, tried that a couple times. Did it again, just for fun, with same result. Am I using the wrong google apps pack? I'll try a couple different ones. Really want google to recognize my phone again. Currently, no syncing of gmail, calendar, contacts, app updates, etc.
ok. Quick update. Found info on Cyanogen forum that recommended Re-flashing Cyanogen 7.1.0 and re-installing google apps pak. After I did this, my phone asked me to sign in to google accounts, and immediately started downloading all my Market apps. I was excited until, my status bar said "error downloading xxxx" for each and every app it tried to restore. After the 47th app, it finally stopped and gave the error message: "The application Market (process com.android.vending) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again".
As it turns out, about 1/3 of my apps were restored properly. Not sure what to do about the rest.
Ah I'm sorry about that. I had the same problem before and all I did was clear data to fix it.
(For future reference, use titanium backup, downloadable from the market, to backup&restore your apps before flashing a new ROM. Make a copy of the Titanium Backup folder from your SD card and store it on your PC. That way, if you accidentally formatted your SD card, you'll always have a copy of the folder to restore your apps.)

Thanks. I did make a Titanium backup, but needed to install Titanium from the market in order to restore it. As it turns out, after rebooting the phone, the market app is working now, so I just decided to restore the apps I want manually. Currently, I am using my computer to look at my library of apps on the market, and clicking install to restore only the ones I really want. It's nice to see that all the ATT bloatware is available if needed, but it's not being forced on me.
Glad things worked out for you, eventually. Yes, that's a nice feature from AT&T. I don't like their apps it just takes up space. But if I need to sell my phone as stock its nice to have the AT&T apps back

Hello people!
I need some help restoring my SMS chat with all my friends. I came from the stock LG rom (bought the phone in Denmark, so it's probably some danish/nordic version).
I backed up all my system files + apps using Titanium Backup pro, which included something like "Phone/Messaging Storage (version 4.0.4-eng.tonyp.20120904.052245(SMS/MMS/APN)". After doing so I flashed ParanoidAndroid Build 11 + Hybrid Gapps v2, by first doing factory reset, cache/dalvik cache wipe & battery stats.
I rebooted the phone twice & installed Titanium Backup pro, then went into "Backup/Restore" went down to "Phone/Messaging Storage (version 4.0.4-eng.tonyp.20120904.052245(SMS/MMS/APN)" pressed it and chose restore. It asked what I would like to restore, but I could only choose 'only data'. When that was done, it told me to restart so I did. However, after doing the restart, I keep getting this message:
"Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped."
The error window started appearing when I went into the SMS app thing, and is still showing even after shutting it down.
I have now done a clean install of ParanoidAndroid again, and I do not have this error anymore.
However when ever I try to restore my Messaging it keeps giving me the same problem.
Help me! What should I do in order to restore my beloved chat log? I got some valuable information there.
There are several ways.
TB automatically creates an SMS/MMS backup, but it's labeled "Messages". Look for a TB-icon (Yellow star) labeled "Messages" or possibly a translated string. Restore data for that one. Threads with MMSes in them will not show the correct title, however, this will auto-repair itself after you receive an SMS.
Anther way is to go back to your original ROM, and choose "More/Backup data to XML", and store the file on your SD-card or on a cloud-server TB supports, then "Restore data from XML" on your new ROM.
Use 'super backup' to restore ur contacts
Thanks for the answer! I got it fixed.

This is exactly what I did, but I'm getting a failure to restore error. any ideas?
Hey guys! I rooted my SGS i9000 and installed the latest stable Cyanogenmod to it (9.1.0) + the GoogleApps. Before flashing, I made a Titanium Backup for the SMS messages (among others). After flashing, I chose to restore the SMS data (not app) and ignored the message that there is a ROM incompatibility between my former 2.3.3 and the current 4.0.4. Of course, now my messaging app doesn't work (i.e. when I open it and try to see a message thread, it closes with "Unfortunately, Messaging has stopped working").
I tried to clear the app's cache and force-close it, then to clear the app's data (not only cache) and reboot phone. Also I tried to delete the app's data from Titanium Backup's menu. None of these actions solved the problem.
I am not sure what could I do to make it work again. Should I flash CM again using CWM?

I had the same incompatibility with TB when upgrading to CM9.
Go Backup is very good for restoring Call logs/SMS/MMS.
I was on 2.3.6 (JW4) and after flashing CM9 I restored them using Go Backup, and I re-installed all the apps from the market.
I guess you can go back to Gingerbread using Odin, restore SMS data with TB, backup again with Go Backup and then upgrade to CM9.
And by the way you can install latest nightly (0916) as it contains 9.1.0 and some additional fixes.
Yes, that could be the way to go, but I am not that interested in restoring my old messages. In fact, I just want to be able to see/write messages from now on.
OK, a follow-up with what I did in order to fix my issue:
Titanium Backup -> wipe messaging data, wipe phone/messaging data, literally try wiping and force-closing the apps multiple times until it I got bored
fix permissions via Titanium Backup
reboot do CWM, fix permissions from there, too
When I rebooted the phone, the messaging app was doing fine (and no more messages where of course in the list). I tried to send an SMS and I could finally see the thread. I hope that the issue is fixed, although I am not completely sure which of my actions actually fixed it. If someone still has an answer to why did this happen, or a solution, please post it!
PS: paraphrasing another thread: "if you need to restore SMS data, use a dedicated app which stores them online, if you need call-logs or other system settings stored you shouldn't probably mess around with your ROM in the first place"
Good Info.. i also used titanium backup to restore, worked right away. But i couldnt send messages out.
So i installed GO SMS Pro and changed the SMSC Number to the Number my Provider Uses for SMS Messaging.
Would be interesting if sending SMS is working for you with standard Messager ?
for some people *#*#4636#*#* should work.. In the Telephone Information there is a Tab for SMSC Number that can be edited (didnt work for me though)

Well, the app was behaving quite strange. I tried to send an SMS message while it was having problems, and the message got through (i.e. the recipient received it), but the app was reporting an error. I tried sending the message for a couple of other times, but apparently it did not work.
After "fixing" the app, I sent a dummy message to one of my old numbers (the SIM card is somewhere around the house, so I did not check if the message really got delivered), and the app says everything is OK.
Oh, and "the app" is actually the default Messaging app of CM9.
This is really interesting.. well every phone has its own bugs i guess.
My messages didnt come through, so i had to change the SMSC Number with another app (Go SMS PRO) from the Store.
Good to hear everything worked out for you.
Best Regards

GOD!!! i was dealing with very same issue for like more than 5 hours! same place, damn, my sofa is dying! i tried every way of restoring it, but it hanged! actually no of sms in backup were many, somewhere around 18k! so the app was not able to handle them. anyway if anyone in future face the same issue, here is what i did,
1, open messaging app, the default cm9 one, and remove sms limit for a thread!
2, restore backup
3, app will still give errors of not responding, so now comes the most tricky part, till now you have successfully restored the backup and phone has accommodated it in, but app is still not able to handle sudden load of messages. open titanium backup tap on backp\restore tab, scroll to messaging 4.0.4 app, tap on it, tap on run app and verify that messaging app is opening, if yes then it will again hang, exit it, if in hurry everything shuts, open the same place in titanium again, now instead of run app, tap on wipe data!
thats it, check it straight away now, should b working! if still facing issues, you are welcomed to PM me
