yeah i am VERY disappointed in the camera quality. I do like the video though. The snaps are meh.
i thought the pictures i took so far with the camera came out great. if youtr holding the camera every time you move your hand, it will try to refocus the image. with your skates, id think that with the flashing lights the sensor sees that as movement and tries to refocus.

I thought the reviews were just being harsh, but after playing with the HD at the store, the camera is really disappointing. Especially compared to the other options out there (HTC One X). Any chance these short comings can be fixed with a OTA update? Or does the camera suffer for a cheaper price point?

The Camera Quality looks good to me. It's a lot better than the Atrix 2's 8MP Camera.
Image quality has been better than I expected from the reviews - I think it's usable and I'm into photography (of course, for nice pics I'll use a real camera).

Its the lighting in AT&T stores. It looks bright because of the stores themes bright orange and Blue death star. You'll really come to notice that the lights are dimmed a little just so the screens look nice and it's harder to see all the scratches left by people who played with the demo model.
The Camera is really effected by lighting, but it can be fixed with some of the camera's built in pre-settings.
Besides, the trend is instagram these days. Blurry out of focus over saturated pictures are the popular thing now. *shakes head and shrugs*

I do have a dslr, but I wont be carrying that with me 24/7. So sometimes you have to use your phone to freeze that perfect moment.
I was not trying to convince anybody to not get the phone. I was simply trying to get the fact out in case it does bother anyone.

You should at least try it. If you just rely on review every time, you won't but anything. I was afraid that this phone wouldn't be a real upgrade (i had a galaxy nexus). But the hardware is really good and the reactivity of the device is just amazing.

Your kidding me right? The camera is amazing, its not even comparable :what:
The quality is outstanding and the colors are just so vibrant. Completely wrecks my S3.
Well think about how would flash work with the modes that take multiple shots and/or combine them? Obviously those special settings wouldn't be optimal in low light settings where flash is necessary.

The number one reason I upgraded over my HTC Evo 4G LTE was for the better camera in the S4, specifically outdoor/daylight. And I've been testing the heck out of it. Takes spectacular pictures! I'm very happy with the camera. Sport mode works great for non-blurry images of fast moving objects, too. Flash only works in a couple of modes, but that makes sense given most of the modes it's not available in.

You're close. The pixels are actually twice the size and the sensor itself is the same size as most 8mp and even some 13mp sensors - it only has a maximum 4mp resolution output though which makes it a 4 megapixel camera.

Sense takes photos at 8 frames a second if you hold down the button, that's 125ms between shots. Human reaction time is on average 150-300ms. You literally couldn't hit the button faster if you wanted to, the Sense camera's so fast.

This would be great but I fear, much as it is with the AOSP GS4 that such an HTC beast will be GSM only. That is the thing starting to tee me off is being chained to a CDMA network.
Quick edit, not really chained to a CDMA network. Just being a Kansas City person, and having many friends and family that work for Sprint I like to support them as much as I can. Further having said friends and family help me get a better deal than I could get anywhere else.

This is one of the main reasons why I left Sprint couple months ago. I love the ability to flash International base ROM's and US ROM's. It also seems overall development for GMS phones is a lot more popular than CDMA base phone. I also love the ability to be able to try out different carriers while still keeping my phone.
The days of the original Evo has long come and went. I can pretty much guarantee you'll never see a CDMA Base phone get as much development support is that one.

Can CM 10.1 for the One take a photo faster than 125ms after pressing the button? If so, how is it a "heck of a lot faster" taking pics when a couple weeks ago they couldn't figure out how to take full resolution pictures? You're approaching the threshold of your reaction time hitting the shutter button taking longer than the picture being captured and saved.

I was willing to sacrifice MP to get Noise free pics and better low light. Days are just as noisy as any other camera, and low light is, well...
Honami, anyone?
Seems that every company has its own gimmick: Apple the new colors and Touch ID, Samsung the Smart stay and barometer and whatnot, HTC its pseudophilosophical approach and flashy colors.
Really, it seems that Sony is the only one NOT focused more on marketing than the actual product. Unfortunately, their phones aren't very good. Maybe the z1 will be better?

Probably not, but I can't agree. I compared this camera to an iPhone (gasp), and while the One's better with backlights and HDR, the colors are still kinda unrealistic and blown up. Not to mention the noise. And the inability to zoom. And the inability to focus.
