I have a revo and love it. I do alot of tethering though and hate these crappy 4g speeds. I sat side by side with my friends the other day with their verizon phones. Wired tethering, newsgroup downloading. I maxed out around 14mbps...the samsung charge and the moto bionic both were in the mid 20's. We pulled the same files from the same servers. Then we all did speed tests, manually choosing the same servers and the same results came about. Why does the revo get much slower 4g speeds? Can something like this be resolved with a radio software update? I realize the different phones probably have different lte hardware but this is pissing me off. I may have to jump the revo ship soon cuz i got a 4g phone for 4g speed...not 3g plus a little. I do mucho tethering and pull some pretty big files...that's the main reason for me wanting full 4g. Maybe i'm just a jackass

There was a radio upgrade with the v6 update, but has not been implemented as of yet. I do have the radio.diff file that I can put into a zip that someone can flash and try, but I have not been brave enough and wouldn't ask anyone else to be either lol. I can't lose my radio and wait for a new replacement.

Not sure where you are located (could poss check your profile, lol), but here in Portland Oregon, I get anywhere from 14-20Mbps Down and 6.5-11 Up. This has been true with Stock V4, V6 Upgrade, and Revolt Rom. The only time I got higher was when I USB tethered via the ADB method hack. Then I got around 26Mbps Down and 12Mbps Up. Crazy speeds. I love when I can download a large file at 2MB/sec.
As with comparing to 3G speeds. Lucky if you can get 1.3Mpbs Down and .5Mbps Up. Not sure why you would complain about 14Mbps... But, I am also a speed junky, so if I was in your shoes, might be a little frustrated, but still happy with 14Mbps.
-Cybie
14 ain't bad but i'm spoiled by my 100mbit cable service i guess. It's just that i can't get a consistent speed above 13-14mbps/s. I'd like to try that radio update but i don't have the balls to possibly lose my radio....unless a cwm restore will bring it back. I dunno....it's a pointless gripe i guess.
Highest I have seen was 12mbps. I am constantly at about 7-10. Wish I could see higher. I would be happy with 14.
Hell, I was lucky to get 4mbps down in Denver. I noticed on Friday that speeds are up to ~7.5ish. I'm stoked!
Yeah, I'm Homeless.

ok i have been offered an upgrade tomorrow, as a lover of the g1, i want to get another android again(blackberry is back of my mind) haha. any recommendations as to what phone to get?
any help would be appreciated
rgds
steve
How about a Nexus? Or a Mytouch 3g 3.5mm? I played around with a new Cliq XT the other day and I kinda liked it as well.
I just moved from a Blackberry 9700 to the G1 again. I halfway regret it, but halfway never want to look back. My blackberry had phenominal battery life(up to 4 days with 3g on, wifi off while still using BBM a fair amount), great reception, great call quality, handled email fantasticly and did everything else I needed out of a phone perfectly. But that's where it stopped.
Apps and games were lame. It had close to zero "fun factor". It had "3G", though the internet and download speeds were generally as slow as edge. Android phones just seem to handle internet/web/data much better. I really only got rid of it because I couldn't justify paying for a 3G data plan on a phone that didn't really need anything more than edge, since it didn't handle 3G well.
I am a new user of a Samsung Captivate on AT&T, right now I'm not rooted and running the stock software, I generally love the phone, it's much better than my iPhone 3GS and I don't have many issues, except that my upload speed is slow.
I got tired of dropped calls on my iphone and my knowledge of other non-iphone AT&T users seems to indicate that the iphone is the problem with dropped call, the captivate holds on to a call, MUCH better than my old iphone and the download speeds are good, streaming music at High Quality via audiogalaxy is working great.
So I don't think their is anything wrong with my phone.
Testing the phone at work, which is generally has excellent reception for AT&T. I get 1.5 - 2mbps down, which is about what I used to get on my iPhone. But I only get around 150kbps up, my 3GS was even much faster than that in this location usually averaging 250kbps and this phone is supposed an upload speed closer to the iPhone 4 I believe.
Any captivate users on AT&T have a similar issue?
I'm in a terrible reception area at work - would need to test at home...
Currently 128k Down and 256k up
I'm kind of wondering if it's a problem left over from moving my sim from my iphone3GS to the samsung captivate, I had to call to get them to change a data plan and to reset my voicemail to the standard old school voicemail.
I've been using the phone for a week and I've never gone over 250kbps with this phone, but according to the specs I should be getting much better upload speeds.
In central NJ AT&T is actually pretty good and we have consistent 3G coverage, so I it's not like I'm out in the boonies somewhere and that's why my upload is slow.
Guess I should call AT&T.
Your upload speed is normally much lower than your download speed. If you were to do the same test on your broadband at home, you would get maybe if you are lucky 3 mega up for every 30 mega down.
Its how all isps are. The problem is not because of your sim. Also keep in mind that a heavily congested area (new York) will always have bad speeds. The more people with data hogging devices, the slower speeds you will see.
Try doing the bandwidth test again in the middle of.the night or early morning when most people are asleep. You might see some very nice speeds then.

I got my answer
I didn't realize that AT&T disabled HSUPA, I just knew the hardware supported it. and since I'm on the stock firmware that is what is keeping me at 150 - 250kbps.
Thanks for the help guys, it wasn't a big thing like I said but I wanted to know if the problem was my old sim card.
I've seen lots of complaints about the HD7's reception. With my DEFY I've gotten the best 3G reception ever on T-Mobile. HTC seems to have longstanding complaints about 3G reception and hearing about it with the HD2 and HD7 isn't encouraging.
So, Is the HD7 the best or worst you've had on T-Mobile?
Mine is not good, the signal is very weak. My other phone which is the Nokia N8 gets better signal on the same spot.
Overall I get pretty good reception as I did on any of my other phones, except in my living room. It is a total dead zone. Only that part of my house, out of anywhere I go, has a problem. Otherwise I get on average 4/5 bars. I am in Northern California if location is anything important to you.
As more Radio's become available to flash we should be able to get optimal signals hopefully. I personally haven't found it any different to my previous phone (TyTN II)
I've owned a mytouch 4g, g2 and hd7 all of which are htc made
It seems that these phones tend to have a bad reception in low signal area
however the hd7 tends to have the worse
wi-fi calling really works in handy for the mytouch 4g and g2 and i wish they would release this for Wp7
I also have a Defy as well as a HD7. The Defy was the forth phone I had with T-Mobile the others being a Moto Razr V3, T-Mobile Tab and Nokia Nuron. The Defy gets the best reception I've ever had and still does. Sitting in the same spot in my home the Defy gets full bars 3G while the HD7 only gets 2 bars 3G. Even the Nuron gets better reception.
Remember that the "bars" don't mean that much. A better test would be seeing which phone keeps a working signal (can make phone calls) the longest, as you drive away from a tower and into a dead zone. Then you can see which phone actually has the best and the truest reception.

I had one or two disconnections during my conversations but the reception has been OK.
Reception in North Texas is good. Went out to lunch with a friend on Saturday who couldn't connect to the internet on his fruit phone but we could on my hd7. Every place will be different.
Well it's kind of disappointing to hear the varying but mostly bad reports on the HD7's reception. I guess I'll have to wait for something from Samsung or Nokia, if I can't get my hands on one for cheap.
The reception is not that bad its only if you live in the middle of nowhere where I see even a remote issue

My reception has been just fine in places where T-Mobile has reception. That being said, after updating my phone's radios, reception and even data speeds have improved greatly.
Now that I have the No-Do update I'm sorry to say that reception on this phone is still really bad. I was hoping that T-Mobile or HTC would include some sort of radio update. Well, since they didn't is a way I can update my radio firmware without flashing a whole new rom?
I only know of two TMOUS (531) Radios...
1. RUU_Schubert_TMOUS_1.20.531.01_Radio_5.51.09.11a_22.31.50.09U
2. RUU_Schubert_TMOUS_1.54.531.02_Radio_5.51.09.29a_22.32.50.10U
I'm currently on the 2nd one... but I've also tried the newer European and Telestra ROM/Radios as well...
All of them have worse receptions than the HTC TP2 that I had... and it really sucks at my house where I loose data connections all the time.
My reception sucks! I came from Verizon where my reception at home was not the best but with this HD7 its awful. I did have TMO before with an MDA and the reception wasnt nearly this bad. I drop calls daily. However, in some of my clients homes where my old verizon sucked, this phone shines, go figure.
Reception is going to depend on where you use your device. Try it out for 30 and if it doesnt work for you take it back. This phone is amazing and worth the trial! Good luck!

Sure but making a call in a weak signal area with the right phone can be the difference between holding it or constantly dropping it.

But your DEFY performs better under the same conditions? Right?
I have found the opposite.
I had the Desire HD, Galaxy S, and my HD7.
The HD7 works in my gym while the Desire HD did not. I found the reception the same for the Galaxy and the HD7.
I'm using mine on Telus.

They seemed interesting and here in dallas im getting anywhere from .10 Mbps to 2.1 Mbps...
anyone might have a better setting for these?
That is just enabling HSUPA, which many ROMs do.
If you want it to work for data and not degrade call quality considerably, you must either be on a I9000 ROM or using CM7/MIUI
Oh... so since im using phoenix rom I shouldnt worry about it? =/
Bummer thought I could get faster speed than 1.5 MBPS in Dallas...
Thank you.

Upon further review... it looks like the OP of that thread got some positive results tweaking those settings in build.prop
However others got mixed results.
I tested it out quickly and got a slight improvement in download speed but slight decrease in upload speed. I will try it again in a different area this evening, though, because I am testing it in a building with a metal roof and spotty coverage...
I've played around with this the last few months. I've had mixed results. Sometimes it seemed like it got me an increase sometimes not so much. I'm in a rural area and as such I have never seen 5Mbps down. I have seen as high as 4.30 Mbps once in a blue moon mostly after midnight. Its certainly a plausible idea but I cannot say with definite certainty that this will give a speed increase.
I tried it out too but it seems like it is depended on the time and traffic of the server...
Ive seen from .5 to 2.9 on my cappy...
edit: any other results or test to see if there might be a better setting?
Also just updated mine to mosaic.
trickery
I tried putting them in my Nostalgia 1.4 build.prop. See if it makes difference.

I'm in frisco and just hit 3 mbs. Get that in both Denton and here. Have seen as much as 4.5 in both.
I'm on the border of Dallas/Richardson and I get terrible speeds on my Cap. At home I get around 200KBPS if I am lucky. On Monday I was in Frisco with a friend who has an HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon, his 3G speeds were 7000KBPS down while his 4G was 1.7MBPS down. In Frisco I did receive 400KBPS down - wonderful right?
I just tested again at work here in Richardson and out of three test I had network failures. The one test that worked was 67kbps down. This is using HSDPA and a signal strength of -75 dBm 19 asu.
I'm using the newest version of Cognition on my phone. Calls have good clarity and when I am using wifi I get 1.5MBPS down. I don't know why my data service is so bad.
Update: So after typing this post and tested again and got 643kbps down 76 up. I haven't moved from my desk.
That's wild. Metropcs speeds is what you got.
Worst area for me is Rockwall. But at&t is kinda non existent out there.
i'm also on andromeda but got same results on other roms as well.
This is my first smartphone on AT&T and because of where I work I was allowed to get a unlimited data package.
I might try another kernel and modem. Its pretty frustrating that my speeds are so slow.
I'm in Fort Worth and I usually average 4mb down 1.2mb up. I'm also running Phoenix Unleashed 8 with JK4
What is your settings at?
if you did the mod.
I am running stock 2.2 and don't use 3g a whole lot (usually attached to Wifi one way or another), but reading this post I figured I would try running a few tests. With 3 bars of signal strength I got a download speed varying between .86 mbps and 2.07 mbps down over six tests. Upload was never much more than about .40 mbps though. At home my Wifi runs around 9 mbps to just over about 17 mbps for download on the Captivate. The is in north GA, not near a major metropolis or anything.
Im curious about rpicaso's setting for this. Im gettin about the same speed as you bytheme.... i want to be faster!!! haha
Wish it worked.
Rockwall has pretty bad 3G coverage. I have better 2G coverage than 3G at home, so I usually stick to 2G+WiFi. 3G seemed to draining my battery.
I usually pickup towers from across the lake in Rowlett.

Maybe they'll build it up when bush gets finished. I don't get how they have no 3g in Rockwall. I'm in Krum (little po dunk town nw of Denton) right now and getting 3 mbs. Rockwall is a good size city with money.

I'm doing some initial research regarding buying a new phone. One of the things I've heard about all of the 4G Android phones is that 4G sucks the life out of the battery. However, reading the specs on the phone doesn't seem to indicate that, though I wouldn't expect it to either. Also, I'm really going back and forth as to whether or not I even really need 4G. I ran SpeedTest on a Revolution in a store, so I do know how much faster it is, but I'm not sure I'm willing to sacrifice halfway decent battery life for it.
What has your battery life been like in general? Is it as bad as the Verizon store people warned me? For comparison sake, I'm coming from a Touch Pro 2. It also has the extended life battery, so I realize that has spoiled me.
Also, I read in another thread that 4G can be disabled. I just wanted to be sure about what exactly that meant. Does that mean you can actually force a "downgrade" to 3G only data, or does that mean you can either have 4G data or no data (turn it off)?
Does disabling 4G (assuming it's possible) even help with the battery life?
Thanks in advance for any responses!
4G Greatly Reduced Battery Life!
It is true that 4G Data can suck the life out of your battery. 4G Speed Test have been extremely fast, especially in a 5 bar service area. I'm at the Colorado Springs Airport today and all ten speed tests resulted in speeds above 31 Mbps! The highest was 38 Mbps!
Before 4G came to my area I would get 12-16 hours of battery. Afterwards my phone gets 6-8 hours of battery life. I recently got the extended battery and am getting 14-16 hours of battery life.
You can choose 3G mode or 4G mode in settings. Your phone will reboot after changing the mode.
LG REVO, Stock non-rooted.
OMG those speeds are insane!!! When I said I knew how much faster it was, I apparently didn't! I was getting 6 mbps download speeds and I thought THAT was good! Wow, this does change things.
And on top of that, I just learned that the two existing dual core handsets are not yet rootable, and the devs have been running into issues in doing so.
I'm wondering if it's better to go with one of the 3 existing phones, overclock, and be done with it...
Thanks for the info!

If you are not in a 4g area, you can disable the settings, to cdma only. 4g is insane, and with some mods by developers here, its even slicker. I don't know anything about the other 4g phones offered, The Charge, and the Thunderbolt. But I know, LG was unlocked in 2 days, rooted in 5 and with in 2 weeks we had a rom. It's been getting better and better since. I told my friends when their contract came up to get the LG, but they thought the slide out qwerty Moto 3 would be better. Well, he has been having issues with his. She is happy, but that's cuz I slapped a better launcher on there. It's not as slick and fast as my phone, it's not as user friendly, it's a bit heavier, bulkier than mine.
I may be a bit biased, but I love my phone, and I love what has been done to improve it. And I know, there is more to come.
I am in a 4G area, so considering data plans cost the same regardless of what speed you're getting it at, I'm now leaning towards 4G to be able to take advantage of it.
Besides, if I can disable 4G, or go with the bigger battery, it sounds like the battery concerns all go away anyway.
My only original remaining concern was the dual core processor. However, I've been wavering on that topic now as well. I played with the X2 and all three 1GHz phones in the Verizon store. Granted the dual core phone was faster, but only slightly. Even the Quadrant benchmarks weren't that far apart. And, the Revolution's benchmark was the best out of all three 4G phones.
Plus, given the non-root status of the X2 and D3, I assume the Bionic (my original front-runner) won't be rootable, and $100 more expensive.
I just don't know if it will be worth it.
Don't forget Bing!
I personally like my REVO but it would be much better if Bing Search was not default. It would also be nice if the Car Home App didn't use Bing Maps and VZ Navigator as default. The only thing I haven't been able to make work the way I want it by installing other apps is the capacitive search button. If you are going to root then I'm pretty sure you could uninstall or freeze Bing Search and could set Google Search to open when the search button is pressed.
Also, at this time with the latest OTA, I don't believe the current rooting methods work.

With the Revolt Rom, you get root, you get alot of the updates, and a faster overall performance. Check it out in the development area. There are a couple snags and snaffoos, but Mtmichaelson is working diligently to fix them, or help people fix them. I have seen a couple fc's but nothing major.
If you get an extended battery you can easily get over twelve hours of use while leaving it on 4g and leaving the auto sync on
