As you can tell by my post count, I'm wet behind the ears and have that new car smell.
My first time modding/flashing/romming a phone. I've had the Galaxy for over a year. Updated to Froyo using Kies, but it just won't work (Kies) to get me up to Gingerbread. Decided I'd try a mod rom instead. This phone has been nothing but a pain in the ass for any updates/fixes.

Anyway, I have rooted the phone and installed RomManager in hopes of a simple solution to get CyanogenMod on here. I'm in Canada, so I'm assuming I have a Galaxy S I9000M. My carrier is SaskTel. I've got all my apps backed up via Titanium Backup.
I selected "Flash ClockworkMod recovery" in RomManager(v4.4.0.7). This takes me to a menu to confirm the Phone Model. I choose "GalaxyS i9000(MTD)" I get a message about "... does not have an officially supported CMR yet..." I select "Yes" and choose CWM 2.x. It tells me "ROM Manager has been set up to use your existing recovery installation." [can't link images yet, see attachments]
I "Download ROM" in ROMManager. Choose "CyanogenMod 7.1.0-RC1". Also select the "Google apps". It finishes downloading, asks to backup current rom, wipe data, etc... I check off all the boxes. The phone reboots and goes into recovery mode... I think... and I see this:
E:Can't open /cache/update.zip (bad)
Installation aborted.
There is no update.zip anywhere on my internal or external sd.
Little help? Anyone?
Don't panic. Go back into ROM manager. Do all that again but this time choose the latest Clockwork Mod option it gives you. Not 2...either 3 or 4.
Then do the flash again.

Chose 3.x and still the same thing.
Check again, it should be in your /sdcard directory. If you find it, delete it and flash recovery from ROM manager.
If not, what kernel are you using?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
No update.zip on the phone in any directory. (images attached)
Kernel is 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #3 (image attached also).
Thanks for your help so far.
Edit: wrong screenshot for kernel.

Nah, fate is not so cruel.
Download the Speedmod kernel for froyo, and flash it via Odin.
Then do the recovery thing from ROM manager again.
If there is still no update there, search in XDA for update.zip, choose the right one for 2.2 and put it on your SD card manually....THEN FLASH CM7.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Ok, flashed the new kernel.... after a moment of panic when it just sat there and did nothing for about 10 minutes. I pulled the battery, went back into download mode, plugged it in and hit Start in Odin and it finished in a few seconds. Whew!
Still no love flashing CWM and trying to do CM7. No update.zip. Now on the hunt for the "latest" of that file. This could be fun.
Well, now the fun begins. I downloaded an update.zip and it still wouldn't work. I booted into recovery from ROMManager and eventually drilled down to install from sdcard and chose the CM7 I'd downloaded a while back. Held my breath, scrolled down to the "yes, do it", and clicked. And whaddia know! CM7 is installed!! Did the same thing for the Google Apps and it looks like that installed ok too since I'm ripping things outta the market. Now to get Titanium backup and try to restore some of my other apps! This is fun!
But now market is doing a Force Close when I look for Titanium. Should I boot back into recovery and wipe all data?
Edit: bah.... didn't want to wait. did a wipe/factory reset. more playing to follow....
simple extract it and make it zip again  if it not work download it again

First things first, if you flashed a previous version of Clockwork Recovery using Odin, FLASH BACK TO A STOCK KERNEL using this Odin package:
http://koush.tandtgaming.com//test/kernel-vibrant-stock.tar.md5
This recovery is *very* safe to use. It does NOT flash your kernel; it is a completely uninvasive recovery method.
How it works: The recovery is packaged as an update.zip that you run from STOCK recovery. The update.zip unpacks Clockwork Recovery onto the ramdisk and restarts recovery. When you reboot, it reverts back to the original, unmodified, stock recovery. So, you will need to keep the recovery on the root of your SD card as an update.zip, and apply the zip every time you want to start Clockwork.
HOWEVER, if you use ROM Manager, all of the recovery installation and management instructions are done for you!
Installation instructions:
Download ROM Manager from the Market.
Flash Recovery.
Choose Vibrant as your phone.
Accept the Superuser prompt.
On the very FIRST boot of Clockwork, you may need to manually select "reinstall packages" if Clockwork does not start. You should only ever have to do this once. It will be automatic from then on.
Watch the backup go!
That's it! This is completely painless and safe! There is no need for Odin anymore to replace the recovery or flash updates!
If you appreciate my work, please buy the Premium version of ROM Manager!
Failed the first time. Left me in the stock recovery menu and gave a recovery error when clockwork first started. Flashed again and tried to backup a second time. Looks like it worked perfect! Now we need some froyo!

Yes! That is expected! The very first boot WILL FAIL, the recovery needs a kick start to complete installation.
little tip
after I downloaded Rom Manager and had it download the recovery for my Vibrant.
After the success message I waited nothing happened so you may have to select to manually reboot into the recovery, then select "reinstall packages" to finish the installation.
I don't see Vibrant in ROM manager. Do I need to buy premium or am I doin somethin wrong

Vibrant is listed. "Galaxy S Vibrant". Make sure you are on wifi. Some carriers cache web pages.
Sweet I can't wait to have a real recovery

thanks Koush.. buying the prem version to show my support!
Bummer I guess ill have to wait until I can find a hotspot
I downloaded the clockwork Rom Manager premium and I press the pFlash Recovery button. But I don't see Vibrant in the list either.
Please make sure you guys are on wifi. T-Mobile is caching your webpages and serving you older versions.
when i flash the recovery.. and reboot it goes to the stock recovery i hit reinstall packages then it goes to clockwork.. but after that if i reboot it goes back to stock... hmm thats odd..

That's how it is supposed to work. Recovery is not replaced permanently. It's safer that way. Just reinstall packages to get into clockwork. Or use ROM Manager to have it handle everything automatically.

No, you don't have to. Just go into your browser, go to menu-->more-->settings-->clear chache and that will get you going

If flashing manually, yes. Just flash using ROM Manager though, and it will handle that all for you automatically.
I can't permanently replace the recovery until the kernel source and whatnot is released for the Vibrant.
Hells yeah!!! Will someone PLEASE put a shipped firmware out now? Like the T959UVJFD. I appreciate the life saving effort from MS_Guru, but t959uvje8 is not jiving with me and my 3g and/or wifi...
Amazing work! Excellent idea for a 100% safe recovery! Kudos!!

Got my Captivate a few weeks ago (best phone ive ever had) and i instantly Updated it to 2.2. The problem i have came across now is that i see terms such as "JK3" and "JPU" when i want to install a theme and i was wondering how do i know if i have that. I dont remember what i used to get 2.2. Also DL ROM manager, click install Clockworkmod Recovery but i dont know if i have it, how would i know. When i go into mass storage and all my folder show up it has a clockworkmod folder with a recovery-update.zip in it. Copied that .zip to main folder area and renamed it update, put phone in recovery mode and put reinstall packages but it says E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed when i rename it i dont put .zip......Baseband Version: I897UCJI6, Build Number: FROYO.UCJI6
stock 2.2 leaked ROM has 3e recovery. You need 2e recovery. Go back to stock 2.1 using ODIN.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
will it delete everything?
update:should of opened up link before replying haha will something like Lookout or Titanium backup pics etc.. so it wont be deleted?
It won't wipe your sd card. Your pics and media on the card/internal storage will be fine. You will lose your apps, you can use titanium to back those up.

I don't think there is a simple way at least. ODIN is as simple as it gets. Just backup your apps using Titanium then ODIN right away.
would this be the one? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 and would i have to undo my root and uninstall my Oneclicklagfix V2+?

if you use the ODIN one click, you dont have to remove anything. it will remove it all for you
just recently got a samsung captivate. rooted it. downloaded rom manager....put a custom rom into the sd card....pushed flash clockwork mod recoevery then pushed install rom from sd card but it says " you must have clockwork mod recoevery installed before continuing"....nothing seems to change this..
if i click reboot into recoevery..it gives me an option to restart now, reinstall packages and a third option..i click reinstall packages and it just restarts the phone...it doesnt go into the clockwork recovery. what can i do?
and when i clock flash clockwork it doesnt give me the option to choose what phone im using or anything...i checked superuser permissions and rom manager is one of the progs listed
Try installing busy box app from market and open, click install busy box.
Steps for clockwork are
Open rom manager
Click top option
Select captivate
Once it its completed go to my files. Look for a file on your sd that says update. If it is there then it worked.
Go into recovery, select reinstall packages, first time will boot back to same screen, click reinstall packages, second boot will bring you to clock work recovery, green letters.

I'm having this exact same problem. I followed those instructions and rebooted the phone after installing busybox but still nothing happens when I hit flash clockworkrecovery mod in Rom manager
Ok. Another solution is to just download the update.zip boot into recovery and reinstall packages. I am pretty sure on the first page of the axura thread in captivate development, if you scroll to the bottom of the faq, there is a download for this. Give that a shot

Do you have 3 button recovery?
If you do, dont bother installing, ROM Manager, you wont need it. Just copy the ROM and CWM's update.zip to your phone, 3 button into recovery select reinstall packages, you'll then "go back", reinstall packages again, then you reboot into recovery, and install your ROM
Where can i get that

Okay. So, you were running Paragon, you flashed Phoenix, and you want to go back to Paragon.
Hopefully you made a backup of your ROM before you flashed Phoenix. You then used Odin to flash to stock, rooted, and installed ROM manager.
If you flashed back to UCJF6 (Android 2.1) you won't be able to restore a backup based on Froyo 2.2.1, which is what Paragon is based on. That's why you're getting an error. You're going to need to do a fresh flash of Paragon. Place the base Paragon ROM on your SD card.
Use ROM Manager to flash the base Paragon ROM. Now, on the base Paragon ROM, use ROM Manager to restore your backup.
I'm hoping you did everything one should do prior to returning to stock with Odin, as in creating your backup, disabling your lagfix, etc, before using Odin to get back to stock. Also, take into account that you need to have the same kernel installed on the newly flashed ROM and the ROM you're attempting to reinstall. So, if you had a custom kernel installed when you made your backup of Paragon, make sure to flash that kernel on your newly installed base Paragon before you try to restore.
Good luck.
The sad thing is that i cant use rom manager i rooted my but it doesnt let me use clockword recovery

I'm having a problem with rom manager as well.i get the error downloading recovery. I may try to flash an older version I have on my laptop. I'm using the stock rom and rooted.

I too am having a similar problem, I'm on stock and trying to get ROM manager to work but it won't let me flash ClockworkMod Recovery or even an older version. As stated already I get the error message "An error occurred while downloading your recovery." However, it seems that if I select my phone as an i9000 Galaxy S, ClockworkMod will download, but it won't work.
And for the record, using the 3-button recovery I only get the options of:
reboot phone
reinstall packages (which says the update.zip is a bad file and won't open)
delete all user data
delete cache data
I should add that this is the first time I've seen this situation and usually I'm able to "install .zip from sd card" but in this case I can't.

My apologies. I should have read your original post a little closer.
You can try installing clockwork recovery manually via this method:
Take the attached zip file and rename it update.zip. Connect your phone via USB to your computer. You'll notice there's already an update.zip file on your phone. That's the update.zip which was used to give you root permission. Take the newly named update.zip file (clockworkmod) and replace the update.zip (root) on your phone's sd card.
Now, disconnect your phone from your computer, and power down your phone. Press the volume up AND volume down button at the same time, then hold down power. Keep holding all three buttons down. The ATT screen should pop up once, but keep holding down the buttons. The ATT screen will pop up again, and now, you can let go. This should get you to the stock recovery screen. Use your volume down button to scroll down "reinstall packages". Use the power button to select the option. This will install clockworkmod on your phone. Now, it'll come back to the same stock recovery screen. Tick down once again to "reinstall packages" until clockworkmod pops up.
I'm not sure if ROM manager will work with this version of clockworkmod, as I stopped using ROM manager a while ago. I just reboot into recovery manually and navigate clockworkmod with phone's physical buttons. I guess you can give it a go.
If this doesn't work, something might have happened with with the odin flash, or a lagfix wasn't disabled prior to going back to stock, or Dalvik cache wasn't wiped, or your cache partition wasn't wiped, etc, and you might be out of luck.
When I want to flash a ROM, I always make a backup, copy the backup onto my computer, backup my apps with Titanium Backup, copy that backup onto my computer, disable any lagfixes, flash to stock using ODIN, master clear, root, install clockworkmod, copy the new ROM zip file to my SD card, do a factory reset in clockworkmod, wipe cache partition in clockworkmod, and wipe Dalvik cache in clockworkmod, then install my new ROM.
I've never had any problems using those steps. Good luck.

Right now I think the best thing to do is to re-flash your phone with Odin to 2.1, then master reset with Odin. After that, root your phone following every step (of you've done it properly, you'll jave a 'Super User' icon on your menu/app screen) go to the market and download Rom Manager. Run it and select clockwork mod for galaxy s captivate. Put your cognition 4 zip file into your phone and then reboot into recovery mode (second option in Rom Manager). Click in install files from zip (I think this is it) and then choose your zip file. If you don't have this option then click on reinstall packages and the phone will restart with the 'install from zip file' option. That's pretty much it"
