Hi people!
On my Galaxy S i9000 I have on Juwe 5.3 (JVR) with Semaphore 1.6.0.
I have the following problem: my GPS works (good accuracy and locking speed) only when the screen is on. As soon as the screen goes off, I lose the fix and precision, while using tracking apps like Runkeeper or My Tracks and diagnostic ones like GPS Status.
I've tried to force the CPU on 1000 MHz with Voltage Control but the problem remains so I'm guessing it's not a performance issue.
Any ideas?
Everything else works fine.
Thanks!
The same happens on my phone (albeit w/ CM7), but I don't mind, since that would eat the battery. I can see how that would render certain apps useless, though. I've used a few ROMs in my day, and never noticed GPS staying locked while the screen was off. I'm interested in how you'd achieve this as well.
Hi.
Yes in fact when I was on stock the gps worked as expected but I was on froyo.
Than I updated to a beta GB and then to Juwe.
I'd prefer not to put a froyo rom just to test if possible. I'll wait for someone to come with some idea
Thanks!
Some updates:
- It seems not to be kernel releated (tried with both semaphore and CF-Root, will try also TalonDEV)
- Not rom releated also (from Juwe JVR to Simplicity JVT, passing thru stock JVT).
Any ideas?
Is there someone whose GPS stays locked even if the screen is off?
Thanks.
Interested as well. Anyone?
Hmm, my gps would always lose lock if i turned off screen (froyo too).. thought that was normal behaviour
i thought that depends on the app. navigon has a setting which says to keep gps on or off when minimised.

Probably this is right. Should be app-related.
I used to have a lot of GPS problems, but I solved them connecting GPS for the first time with WiFi on google maps, after that, GPs worked great without wifi being necessary anymore.

I will try that.
It seems that also other phones are affected by this problem/feature, after the update to Gingerbread.
Little update: the navigation app does not let the screen to turn off to not to lose gps fix.

To my knowledge, there is no thread dedicated to the new numerical releases of CM. Let us start with the newest, CM 6.0.2.
Please post your anecdotal data, including benchmarking scores, bugs, and glowing experiences. Perhaps this will serve as an unofficial repository for issues that prove consistent.
Note: After modifying my WiFi settings, specifically disabling sleep mode while the screen is off, I've encountered no related instability.
Mail FC Fix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=394316&d=1283500340
Systemic issues yet to be addressed:
-LEDs do not work save for charging
-Outgoing calls initially drop before reconnecting
-Lockups or reboots, likely stemming from SetCPU
-OS does not recognize internal storage
Does this version fix the wifi not staying on?
Did you change your settings to Never sleep for wifi and just left the wifi on? Thanks...I want to try different settings and see if I can eliminate reboots/shut downs.
are we waiting for the nightly for the newest fixes like LEDs or is there gonna be a new release like .3?
OP you are a month behind (it's 9/3 not 8/3)
After fixing the mail fc, this rom is very stable except for one lingering issue. I guess it might be wifi related. I went all day without any issues with wifi on constantly (and bt) but when I left work (and seemingly as soon as I got out of wifi range) the phone was locked up with nothing on the screen, unresponsive. I had to pull the battery. This has happened since RC3 for me. I am going to try it without wifi over the weekend. Otherwise, BT streaming adio now works perfect, and the internal memory gets scanned for pics/images. I'm going to keep running it though as this wifi bug should be fixed soon.
not to mention we're commenting on it in the more official thread posted up by the author of the rom .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755690&page=111
however just to say it.. so far its running quite well, I found a correlation between wifi and BT causing issues with each other... commented on it in the other main thread after some extensive testing today.

Yes, there definitely is still issues with wifi. The issue seems to be exacerbated when running SetCPU with a profile that underclocks when the screen is turned off. Since I've stopped using SetCPU I havent had a single freeze, although I might have just gotten lucky so far.
SetCPU will not run at startup for me, even with the option checked to start at boot. I had to set Tasker to run it at boot as a workaround.
When phone is in Airplane mode I still am able to recieve text messages.

I would have to second the issue with SetCPU. As soon as I overclocked it and began using the rom I noticed the phone would get hot abnormally fast and would reboot a few times within the first few hours. Not sure what is going on here as it worked fine on the RC.

I believe the thread referenced by you refers to RC3, whereas I am specifically looking for feedback on the newest numerical releases of CM 6 for the incredible.
Update: leaving battery percentage at 91 before bed with system panel running, will see whats eating up the most juice. So far stable n fast with no issues (except LCDs).
I get random reboots and freezes every thirty minutes if so on a fresh wipe of 6.0.3 I tried with setcpu and without but always with the built in hotspot running. Same issue since RC3
LED notifications dont work. LauncherPro Plus FCs on every reboot, other then those things im good with it, great wallpapers , great rom

he just hasn't updated the topic title.

Battery life was down to 81% 11 hours later, and the phone had been placed in Airplane mode while running Gentle Alarm and a few widgets (no auto task killer).
Breakdown:
System 0.6%
System Processes 0.3%
System Panel 0.3%
android.process.acore 0.1%
Plus several honorable mentions with 0.0%. I have yet to perform this experiment with Ruby or ID.
So there are people on here that get good (not fantastic) performance from there GPS with stock, while others like myself have terrible gps performance with stock. I can't lock on, only 2 satellites in view ext. ect, ect. I even tried all the lbstest changes people recommended and i had no change, while others say its fixed.
When I flashed JH7 from odin one click download I got really good results, locking on after a minute or less down to 10 M and with 9 statalites in view.
but I've read others didn't have the same result as me and nandroided back.
Are we sure we all have the same GPS hardware? why do all of our results vary so much with the same rom on the same hardware.

It could be that some people master clear, when others haven't. I use SRE and my performance is amazing with the GPS. DG does some tweaks still i believe, and my gps tracks amazingly.
Other than that, I have NO clue why. Maybe people have more trees in the area and get less lock? Only thing I can think of.
thanks for the reply, it turns out that after doing a master reset and reflashing jf6 my gps is running better. I dont know what changed but it is performing the same as jh7 was. I guess back to the drawing board
my gpa worked better stock, and with the overclock kernel and utb. I then used jf7 and sre and I'm thinking about going without sre, or maybe move ap only version.
I didn't try jf7 without sre though so I can't know what it will do. I actually have a feeling that my recent poor performance is nothing but a coincidence though. I'll give it a few days and a road test.

Mine works fine with JF6, utb, and lagfix ext4.
Wife's also works fine with JF6 and utb.
We used google navigation on hers yesterday and it worked just fine.
Part of the problem is not everyone is testing GPS the same way. The best test is using the NAV application - and not just on a simple route in the neighborhood. Combination highway and local driving - see if the NAV thinks you are on the street or keeps trying to reroute you. Does it tell you about turns or think you missed them?
Also Track your travels and view it on Google maps - really zoom in and see if you wander through buildings.
I think some of it may have to do with system blocking - more things running in the background may have to dow ith how often the GPS updates.
I am trying to get a solution for these 3 problems I am facing with Doc´s 7.6.2.
Maybe it is not a big deal to make it a perfect ROM but these 3 topics are annoying:
I wrote the same message already in Doc´s threat but no answer at all. in 5 min 10 new messages so nobody really takes care for a new question
Hi Guys,
Some problems I do have with the 7.6.2 and for sure I am not alone with these errors.
1 From time to time high energy consumption but sometimes not - this is crazy. One thing I realized when alarm is switched on for all weekdays then it sucks almost 20% in 5h - just in standby mode. Whats wrong here?
2 GPS signal is bad. When you using this tracking tools eg. cardio trainer it looses half time the GPS signal. Was definitely not with older ROMs.
Is that the modem version?
Is this part of the kernel?
3 Bluetooth works but whenever activating and deactivating getting a stupid message about an opp bla bla.
What is wrong?
Who can help?
Thanks
boris03
quite alot galaxy s users have reported issues with the gps reception i used to think its just a driver issue but upon reading into it would seem its related to the antenna. The wifi also suffers from this problem for me it does anyway. you can try out gps booster lite from market it does help outdoors to get a faster fix as for battery issues well im not so sure you would prob better asking in that thread if your still not heard try sending a pm that should work. good luck

1.) Turn off your lagfix, run stock RFS see if you still get the issue.
Do a fresh install dont add ANY apps other than stock, observe for 1-2 days of battery usage.
2.) GPS is a hit or miss, hardware is broken.
3.) Never had issues with BT, I use it on a day to day basis to pass around files at the office.
Are you using one of those OC kernels? Or any of the suggested kernels for the matter? I was using Super Optimized Kernel for a while and the battery drain was outstanding even on the non-OC versions. Switched to SpeedMod 300hz. Haven't monitored the battery though but it seems better with normal usage. Also, what lagfix are you using? For a time I was using the Ext-4 Overkill lagfix from the ULF and I noticed considerably less battery life.
As Earlz suggested, try disabling lagfixes and tweaks and monitor..then if it is better than before perhaps using a different lagfix would be a solution. Try switching up kernels (remembering to disable lagfixes prior). Try running different launchers too. I'm no expert on how these things work and affect battery life, but this is all based from personal experience.
My GPS never worked from the start no matter what firmware/ROM I'm on so it seems to really be a hardware issue as EarlZ mentioned. If the problem came about after flashing 7.6.2 then try reflashing to stock firmware with repartition and installing 7.6.2 again after clearing cache and factory reset. Somehow that (having a super clean install) usually fixes random problems I get with any ROM. I'm not certain if it will have any affect on GPS performance but it's worth a try.
Bluetooth is still working fine for me. Perhaps the aforementioned clean install advice I gave could remedy this.
Hi there, i rescently installed DJP5 v8.0.1 . And have some problems with it. When i'm making call i hear the other side perfect, but they dont hear me well. Is it some issue with the ROM or ? Have someone else experienced similar problems?

There is investigation on that one...
For now, it seems to be a modem issue from the stock modem of ADJP5
Flash another modem seems to fix this issue

As a heavy GPS user for driving navigation and sports tracking, using EndomondoPro, I can't afford to have a broken GPS. When my Exhibit II was unrooted and stock, I had occasional GPS troubles in which the GPS would not lock into a signal and whatever app I was using showed that it was still searching for GPS. This continued when I rooted the phone but kept the ROM otherwise stock. Same when I tried CM10, same with the first Slimbean 4.whatever and then with the latest Slimbean 4.2.2. Most of the time it would work, but sometimes not. I added the app PimpMyROM and tried the tweak that is supposed to improve the GPS, by indicating that I'm in North America and the United States. The app then supposedly downloads a GPS config file.
Upon loading the Nexus ROM, I was sorry to find out that GPS doesn't work at all. So I restored a nandroid of the latest Slimbean ROM. I rebooted, and found out that GPS was not working. The app GPSTest showed a handful of satellites in view and working, but no speed readout (I was walking). EndomondoPro app, which uses GPS to track sports mileage/speed showed the ?Locating message in the lower left of the screen, and would never lock onto the satellites. The GPS icon in the status bar -- the white bullseye -- kept blinking, indicating no lock on the satellites. I rebooted the phone, turned GPS on and off, rebooted again, and it still didn't work.
Then, I tried the tweak for GPS on PimpMyROM, and BOOM! The GPS worked.
Is this coincidence, or proof that there is some benefit to using that PimpMyROM tweak? Can any devloper explain what that tweak does, and why it is necessary and not already built into each of these custom ROMs?
And finally, since GPS is very important to me, does anybody know of a custom ROM that is optimized specifically to give all power and glory to the GPS function of the phone? If so, that might be the custom ROM for me.
I have also wondered about the pimp my rom tweaks. Like how does it give you better camera quality?

It installs bravia engine or something like that which has been debunked before. A lot of tweaks are placebo effects. Its kind of like having a quad core phone. Everyone says its faster but for everyday use not so much. All 4 cores will only kick on when the phone is under a heavy load like running a benchmark. This is why I'll prob get another s3 instead of getting an s4 don't see the point in a quad core phone

I've noticed lately that my G920T has a terrible time keeping GPS lock. Definitely a pain when I'm trying to use Waze or other GPS apps. It seems to be significantly worse in my car but overall, GPS Status reports that most satellite signal health is bad. I don't have a case on my phone, so I really have no idea what could be the issue. I've tried resetting AGPS to no effect.
I'm currently on XtreStoLite 3.3.1, running Arter's kernel, but I have experienced this issue on other kernels as well.
I've been noticing this too. Especially when driving. It seems to happen most when an app installs/updates in the background. Toggling GPS on and off in quick settings fixes it, but it's inexcusable and impossible to do while driving, when you need it most.

Are you running greenify? You'd have to toggle doze off... If not download the gps conf files from online and use the appropriate one for your geographic region.
I've experienced similar, as well as some other random stuff that I won't get into here, started about 5 weeks ago. Basically seems to come down to having power saving enabled and maybe screen off (I'm almost always running power save). Francis might be onto something with doze, but it shouldn't be disabling GPS while it's actively running in an app (navigation, fitness trackers, etc) whether PS enabled or screen on or not. I've had this phone since last October, done a few different ROMs, but I'm currently stock (EPF1) with just root, no other mods and have been in that state for several months (because I've been lazy), no updates or anything. Tried removing apps that might have been installed recently at the time, to no avail. No clue what the deal is, but I'm gonna flash some custom ROMs again, which hopefully solves whatever bug issue this is.
Don't think I provided any solution, but wanted to give some input as I had similar issues.
I discovered the problem. I was using Arter97's kernel. Re flashed the kernel that comes with the ROM; GPS works much better.
