[Q] Anyone using the Android Kindle app on the Touch? - Nook Touch Themes and Apps

I wanted to use the Kindle app on my Touch (heresy, I know), and it works well.... except for a single issue.
I can't search a book. Using the search utility on the Kindle app brings up nothing. No problems searching in Aldiko or the B&N native reader. Just wondering if I'm missing something blatantly obvious or if it's hosed to begin with.

I can confirm the issue, searching in a book doesn't return any results. :-(

cceerrtt:
I was sooooooooooooo hoping it was just me. Without the ability to search for passages, I can't use it.
No worries. Quite a few other readers.
Thanks again for the reply.

Here's a question for everyone, too: is it possible to run the native Kindle Fire application on the Nook?
There are a lot of free titles available on Kindle that are not available on Nook. Heresy is appreciated when it is practical

I am also having the search problem. I tried updating the Kindle app through Google Market, but it won't update. The latest version in the market is 3.3.2. When I uninstall the Kindle app and reinstall through the market, it seems to install version 3.2.0.35. Has anyone been able to install 3.3.2?

So apparently the latest version 3.3+ you need to have android 2.2 or higher. Since the nook is only 2.1 the latest version you can install is 3.2
I have not tried searching but it seems that scrolling through larger titles (newspapers etc) with articles does not work. It is hard to say exactly how it should work but turning pages using a right to left swipe works perfectly fine. Scrolling through a vertical list of articles using a up to down swipe does not work at all. This makes newpapers really difficult to read on the nook since you have to many skip through each article.
Dictionaries seem to work the same as anywhere else which for foreign language reading is fantastic

Similar questions came up recently in two other threads. Paraphrased answers from these threads: You could either modify the key mappings statically in /system/usr/keylayout/TWL4030_Keypad.kl and reboot. Or, for dynamic app-dependent button mappings, you could attempt porting Buttonmap over from the PRS-T1.

Has anyone tried installing Nook for Android?

I realize it is perhaps a strange question, but since the Nook Color doesn't work in Landscape mode and the Kindle software does- AND the Nook for Android software I installed on my cell phone also does, I would like to be able to swap the "broken" original Nook Color version and use Nook for Android.
I have tried a few things to make this work to no avail.
I recently appended ".bak" to all the applications with "BN" in the name in /system/app and restarted on the off chance that one of them was preventing it from working but no such luck.
I expect that if/when custom roms are available this issue will go away, but in the meantime has anyone else tried this or found a way to successfully get the nook ereader software to use landscape mode?
I installed it from the android market on my NC but it doesn't start regardless of orientation. No FC, just won't start.
Yep. Same here. Nook for Android won't start on the NC.
...Kindle for Android does. I believe this is called irony.
yeah kind of lame that it won't start. I'm curious as to wether it provides a better experience than the built in stuff. Ya never know.

Kindle for Android does? Hah! Any word on how it runs. Having one device with access to Nook AND Kindle content would be fantastic.
Kindle runs pretty well, really.
I like that it, unlike the stock Nook ereader software, will do landscape mode.
One bad thing that was pointed out to me is that the scroll bar to rapidly change pages is virtually impossible to use.

Nook android app on rooted Nook Color

Has anyone been able to run the Nook Android Application on a rooted Nook Color?
When I try to run it, it just exists immediately.
Why would you want to run the android app, when you already have the nook.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Nookie Froyo can and from what I've been told works fine, therefore the app works on the screen and such, but for some reason no it doesn't work properly in the B&N ROM.
I have the same experience, that is, immediate exit.
Why run it on the NookColor??
Because the Market app is just better.
Page turning is more like a page turn, the interface is better......
Tried killing native processes and it still won’t work..
No, ideas. I guess I’ll wait for Froyo.

I knew someone was going to ask that.
Easy - once you add about 2700 books, the library app on the nookColor shows 0 books. You can still search, but you can no longer browse. (That's using up 2.5GB of space - so just about half).
I have 0 faith that B&N will fix this, so I was thinking perhaps that the android app would not have this limitation.
Whoa....have you reported this bug?
If that's the case i have no doubt it WILL be fixed. Has anyone duplicated this issue with that many books?

I really hope you are right, but I wonder where you get your optimism.
E-mail technical support @ Barnes and Noble is non-existent. So far, the suggestions have ranged form hard resetting the device, to telling me how I can unarchive my books. So I gave up on that.
I called in a few times, and managed to get to the next level up of support, but can't seem to get them to file a bug report in their system. Previous companies I worked for, we would gladly file a bug report and give the customer the #. Not here.
As you can imagine, 2700 books might be considered an edge case - but not for long - especially given that the Nook reads PDFs, etc. 2700 is not all that much.
There's a post here: http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com...ks-in-Library/m-p/770718/highlight/true#M3277 which shows another user concurring. I have seen others with the same issue as well...
Two things.
First, another valid reason to utilize the android app is the ability to use multiple accounts. I personally use three accounts on B&N, and it is super annoying that I have to wipe my account just to read my other books.
Second, if this is a real bug present in the stock Barnes and Noble library, they will fix it. The original NOOK has had five updates to fix bugs and add features, and Barnes and Noble will continue this with the NOOKcolor. The main reason they chose the android OS as opposed to creating their own ( a la kindle or sony) was the easiness of OTA updates.

Also, the reason I am looking for it, is the ability to read holding the nook landscape, it is more confortable to me that way.
I prefer the Phone version of the UI in the Nook App and would like my CM7 NC to look the same as some of the button in the tablet version are hard to hit for some reason (especially 'go to shop', 'settings', etc).
I installed the APK that my phone downloaded but the app knows it's a tablet and converts to that. Anyone know how to make it look more like the phone version?

Hmm I guess this means i am going to be running by barnes and noble to buy one on the way home from work today. It is really too bad they saw this coming and didn't put 3g in it.
Is there no Nook Simple Touch forum yet?

If you (or anyone) do get a NookTouch and root it, I'd be most appreciative if you could share you experience regarding several points:
(1) pdf -- zooming and landscape (NookTouch does not have multitouch; can we at least use the "+/-" zoom buttons in the free acrobat pdf reader? -- assuming that we can sideload apps!)
(2) can we install an alternate launcher? (e.g. zeam)
(3) can we access (google) calendar/contact/gmail?
(4) connectbot? terminal emulator?
(5) kindle/aldiko/etc?
(6) battery life?
Thanks!

all except 6 can be possible, thought 6 is possible but if you are ready to give up performance then you can use setcpu which requires root.

I agree/believe that the first five bullet points I raised are possible; what I'm interested in is the *experience* -- e.g. is it realistic to use a rooted NookTouch to sideload the acrobat reader to read a 20 page science paper in pdf with equations *comfortably* (the latter would likely mean reading in the landscape mode).
As for item #6: this entire thread is about rooted device My question is whether using the rooted NookTouch to run regular (not flash) apps like acrobat reader/aldido/brower would kill the battery (e-ink uses energy only when it reflashes, but if you have to scroll your pdf file/webpage frequently then this might still be an issue...).
Is sideloading the only option for loading apps onto the rooted Touch, or is it possible to get apps on there via an app store?

If we can sideload Ammazon Market it should let you download app. I will try it tonight.
Once we have Adb working possibilities are endless.
I should get one, I'm pretty sure one can cook up a modified CM7 for this easily.
I was ready to run out and pick one up, but even if rooted, the screen refresh makes it seem frustrating for web browsing.
Video: liliputing.com/2011/06/139-nook-touch-has-a-web-browser-no-rooting-required.html
Having said that, apps that don't require fast screen updates (words with friends, chess, sudoku) will probably work well.
Hidden Web Browser
Without rooting you can get the Web Browser working

Looks like this is the nook touch developers forum for now.
That's fantastic that it was rooted so quickly.
It sounds like the next step is getting a launcher working. As of now, it seems the only way to run apps is via adb wifi.
It would be nice to keep the original interface and have the option to get to an apps screen via the top bar.
Anyone currently working on this?
The new kobo touch seems to pan very fast in a pdf without flickering. Is the nook touch capable of this? Does the kobo touch have a browser or a way of getting one on there?

I can't get the files to root Nook Touch
I clicked on the links in the NookDevs site to get the two files I needed to root my Nook Touch and I got caught up in some crazy website where it kept wanting me to load their software and not the files I wanted. What's up with that? How exactly do those links work? Is there an easier way to get those files downloaded?
Click the first blue "Direct Download" button on the top right.
I can see the hamster wheels spinning around this joint! EPIC WIN!

I installed it, however, I cannot get it to launch.
Maybe someone can spot my error. Im trying this in the shell
# am broadcast -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n com.amazon.kindle/com.amazon.kcp.application.ReddingApplication
Broadcasting: Intent { act=android.intent.action.MAIN cmp=com.amazon.kindle/com.amazon.kcp.application.ReddingApplication }
Broadcast completed: result=0
Which doesnt do anything. Is there some other magic needed?
I'm going to be following this closely. I really hope development progresses to the point of being able to use the kindle app and some other android productivity apps. As soon as it is confirmed, I'm off to go buy one.

[Q]New nook library

1. It is posible?
2. How?
3. What you can edit in library.apk?
Yes, I have my own Library.apk (that's in a thread here somewhere).
No, it's nowhere as flashy as your version but it serves my needs.
It just uses a basic list but it displays library expiration dates which are important to me.
You must change the whole library.apk? or configure someting in /data/data...
You have to write your own application, or coerce somebody into doing it.
Somebody do it !!!
I actually stopped by to see if there was anything out there like what the OP is asking for, either a custom ROM or launcher or even just a better library app. I'm honestly kind of shocked that there isn't something like this out there. I guess devices like this don't get a ton of home brew mods like phones do?

I finally dumped the stock B&N reader and library after losing shelves too many times and wanting to read PDFs. I've replaced both with Mantano Reader, which works well on the NST, and handles epubs and PDFs nicely. I've used Nook Touch Tools to remap my QuickLaunch Libary buttons to take me to the Mantano home screen and I never even see the B&N stuff anymore.
Mantano also has a for-fee cloud sync service that I'm using to keep reading positions and collections consistent between several devices.
I think now I've got a Mantano Simple Touch reader.

Sent you a PM on this, you've got me curious. Do the hardware buttons work with this reader? I take it you just launch Mantano whenever you reboot the device and stay in it? Any shortcomings?

Yes, the left buttons work. You can't customize them, but they do work. Lower is forward, upper is back.
I replaced the B&N Library option with Mantano on the QuickLaunch menu using Nook Touch Tools. It provides pretty much the same functionality. I also pointed the recent read button to Mantano. Now I don't see the B&N reader or library at all.
On 1st boot, I am in ADW until I launch an app. After that, I pick from my most used (Mantano, Maildroid, Calendar Pad, Astrid Tasks, Orientation) off the QuickLaunch menu.

Koreader

This app seems promising for viewing pdf djvu ... files. Zoom options. simple UI etc.
But I can't get it working on nook glowlight. Tried several versions, one let me choose file to open then crashed.
Anyone here heard of this app or know of a version that works?
Here's the github link:https://github.com/koreader/koreader

I'm surprised you got it to install. It states near the bottom of that referenced page that it's for Android 2.3+. There don't seem to be any older versions posted there, but I'd guess that it's original target was not Android 2.1
Edit: FWIW, there is a dedicated forum over at Mobileread
Sorry I should have been more precise. it's a nook glowlight plus. Just bought the machine didn't think plus version was different android version.
Update: version 1.1(2014.11-262) partially works. Tried EPUB, no luck. Djvu gives error about engine missing. Pdf works fine text reflow works but VERY slow.takes 5 sec. to change pages when reflow option is on.

OK, so now you're talking about KitKat, not Eclair. Obviously the app will install. As to its behaviors...........?
I still think your best bet is the MobileRead forum because people are there who have experience with that app. But remember, it was originally designed for Kindle so there may be hardware/driver assumptions that just aren't valid with the NG+

I tried that work around but it did not work for me. If it worked for you, can you clarify what the poster means by creating the koreader directory "under root"? I tried creating in as "/koreader" and "/root/koreader" but in both cases it got removed when I rebooted the NGP per the instructions. I also asked this question in the MobileRead thread.
For some reason, the patch didn't work with latest stable version. Latest nightly works fine with the patch. The patch goes to: /sdcard/koreader/patch.lua
You can add dictionary and custom font to this directory as well.
Dictionary, reflow, OCR all works fine. Unlike previous version reflow is working correctly.
Screen refresh doesn't work.
OCR slows down device(Even if it's disabled.Had to delete it from /sdcard/koreader )
Battery level isn't shown correctly
These are all the bugs I've found so far.
