Whats the front facing camera for? - LG Thrill 4G

I have no idea why thrill has front camera Not compatible tango, No video calling supported by at&t and not compatible Skype
is it just to take front pictures lol

Have you used Qik?

Gingerbread brings platform support for the FFC. You have to wait for GB to use Skype/GTalk/Tango with the FFC... without hacking it, if possible.

no qik either

yes i used it with the front camera. It may be rom related. I used it on the stock rom and havent used it since switching to the Thriller rom (qik no longer installed). Ill give it a try with the thriller rom this evening and let you know if it still works.

Should be no reason not to work on thriller rom considering it is the Stock Rom for this phone and Not ported from an O3D. All he did was trim some stuff here and there to make it run a bit faster.

Qik works. Used it to video chat with my wife on her i4

[MOD] FFC for the Vibrant development

MODDING THE SAMSUNG VIBRANT TO HAVE A FRONT FACING CAMERA (FFC)
DISCLAIMER: It is NOT my fault if this Breaks your Device, or if you screw it up trying to do it. blah blah you know the drill. XDA is also not responsible. This WILL void your warranty. Luckily it is easy to do.
***THIS IS ONLY FOR THE VIBRANT***
Other phones are slightly different inside
Required:
-Compatible rom (Bionix fusion or eugene's froyo or any rom that the dev specifically says ffc compatiable)
-JAC's OC/UV Kernel. Stock kernel will not work, period. Voodoo should also work KK's kernel also does not work.
-An FFC, of course (see below for where to get it)
HOW TO DO IT:
1. Open your phone
2. Remove the 7 screws or so
3. Remove the internal battery cover.
4. Remove your Vibrant camera... it is snapped in under the cam chip.
5. Using Goof OFF! or denatured alcohol or something similar, dip a q-tip in the chemical, and slightly dab the whole where it is to go.
6. Let it sit for 10-20 minutes, and repeat (or if you are anxious, don't wait...)
7. Using something plastic for the safety of the digitizer glass, and scrape out the gunk.
8. Now, definitely let everything dry before putting your phone back together, and MOST definitely before you put the battery in and turn it on. Give it 20-30 minutes to be safe... depends on the chemical used.
I used a flat head screw driver, which is metal, but if you choose this USE EXTREME CAUTION!!
For more info, go to my thread in the General section as I may have missed something/got something wrong in this post. It has been a while since I first did this mod...
Useful tidbits:
If you get force closes when trying to use a the cam, then you did not read instructions. Use the proper kernel.
Banding is present in low light conditions. This looks to be a software issue. Popular belief is that the phone is powering both cameras at the same time when either is called, and is basically confusing itself. This is a work in progress.
Software that is known to work is Fring, various lame mirror apps, etc. Android video calling is only available in Froyo, but I have not tested it recently since Eugene's R3, so I cannot confirm that it working ATM. Tango may also work.
Attached the mach.aries file for those of you that wanna chip in and do some digging. Looks like most of the things we need are in there. Attached a .rar and a .zip file... for some reason I had both? It's been a loooong couple weeks.
Epic camera: thanks to KellyLewis3985 for the dl.
http://db.tt/0DEkw9X
How to Flash:
1. Download the ZIP and put it on the root of your INTERNAL SD Card.
2. Open ROM Manager and boot into ClockWorkMod (DO NOT use Stock Recovery) or boot into recovery the manual way.
3. Navigate down to "apply sdcard: select zip" and locate the .zip file in your internal SD card. Push the power button, navigate down to "YES" and push the power button once more.
4. Let it do its thing, and reboot. First boot *may* take an extra second... Play with new cam app.
To get a cam:
Just got some more cams ordered... should have them by the weekend, so any orders now will start shipping 11/8 in the order they are received.

UPDATES:
So, now my desktop is totally dead... makes noises it shouldnt right when i turn it on... have to replace... grrr

Got some donations recently, just wanted to say thanks, but the good people here on XDA do not need to pay for one kid's dooschery. I returned the donations back to you. Here is the response sent with the refunds:
Hey man, I appreciate the donation... but the overwhelming support I received the other day on xda was more than enough. This one guy got me down for a night, and you guys picked me up. No one else on xda should pay for his dooschery. Again THANKS

I feel that there are some things more valuable than money. I wasn't pissed about losing $30 as I was about the principle and that someone would have the audacity to rip someone off that is trying to help. Again thanks.

Well, due to over whelming support, i'm not done. Last batch has sold out, and some new options have presented themselves. Also, with the help of a few others, they are getting mad progress on diving through source code working on the banding issue... Keep following this thread for progress.
-----------------------------------------------------
So.... An ebay user who is also an xda member deliberately screwed me out of a camera and the money for it, so after this batch is gone, i'm done. He never updated his address with ebay or paypal, and of course i sent it to the address i had... and he got ebay to not only refund the full price but keep the fees for the sale and money transfer. Way to say thanks to the guy that got this started... asshole. oh! i get it. he is just out of high school and is a little slow to how the world works. probably because he "works on a farm with 70 dairy cows." <- quote from him.
-----------------------------------------------------
Next batch of ffc cams are coming in for those of you who do not have one yet. New listing, donating some of the process to breast cancer research/awareness...
eBay listing here SOLD OUT
Still settling in after the move and new job... Still w/o internet at my house too... So I am limited in what else I can do right now... Hopefully getting these out will help some of you.

Breaking news available via my twitter feed of #vibrantFFC. my original thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7941083
-----------------------------------------------------
This thread is for android/software development of the FFC for the Vibrant. Software and ROM support is insufficient atm, so let's get that fixed.
To see how to add the FFC, check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804142
To get a camera check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804122 or hit up my ebay listing here. buying cams from the wholesaler in large quantities to provide them to you individually... Wholesaler had minimum order requirements.
Currently, I have only tested the FFC in JP3 and Bionix. Mirror app works fine, but is useless.
Video calling is doable, but not available in Bionix. Is available in JP3, but is broken.
Have not had a chance to test Tango, but Fring looks to be coded to use the rear camera...
UPDATE: there has been a lot of progress recently. Halfway through reading all of the threads... Seriously have note had much time, but should be able to finish compiling all of the info into this post soon.

Ok, I am a little confused as to which thread I should be posting in. But here goes.
My FFC wont load in Mirror App using Bionix 1.8 Stock Kernel.
Here is the logcat. http://pastebin.com/biJmEhPr
----------- Edit -----------
Ok, so I finally got around to installing a Rom with a modified kernel. (Specifically Bionix 1.8 w/ Jacs)
The Mirror app now loads the FFC and the image is actually better than the rear cam at the moment.
So, it looks like whatever is going on in the kernel makes a huge difference. Perhaps someone can
take a look at the i9000 and Bell SGS Kernel's.
Posted this in the other thread and it was recommended that I post it here:
Just a thought to kick around some ideas, has anyone looked at this?
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/hardware/Camera.Parameters.html
Looks like there are a few options that could be tweaked, including 'antibanding' for 50 and 60hz

i believe the above it true, i am running bionix 1.8 with the kk kernel, and i cannot get the mirror app to work, will load in the jacs kernel and see the difference.
edit:
i reloaded Bionix 1.8 with Jacs oc/uv without voodoo, and can now confirm the front camera working with the mirror app, albeit grainy
Could not get FFC to work on Bionex 1.7 Stock kernel. Third the kernel info.

Grainy or blurry?
If blurry, you can rotate the focus ring on the actual camera. That's what Cobra did to fix his.
Received camera, installed and confirmed that mirror app works on Bionix 1.7 with JAC voodoo kernel(voodoo activated). Unfortunately, the rear camera problem still exists. Tweaking focus now via outer ring of FFC.
Just installed the new camera. Still on stock JI6 ROM. Banding happens. I recorded some video and can post it if people are interested. Might check if there is any logging that happens when the camera starts up.

ahh gotcha, i'll try that when i get home after work.
when using the rear camera in vignette, the area where the camera chip is gets very warm after not very much use.
maybe the stock vibrant camera data files don't place nice with the i9000 camera
Does any dev have a cam yet?

it doesn't work because it was not made for this phone. even if it did install, it wouldn't work with our camera because moto uses its own camera driver since froyo doesn't have one (gingerbread will). htc uses its own FFC driver as well.

Probably right. Here is Motorola's API:
http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/library/motorola-front-facing-camera-api/
It is so frustrating that using the same system (android) and also having a front camera but we cannot use the same app (skype with video).
yup but that was specifically develpoed for the thunderbolt, I assume if it does get officially launched with it, it will be a matter of time before that spreads to being on other devices (much like when they launched skype in the first place on android) the key question is will they fix the sound issues that moto's config gives these voip programs.

as I learned in the (otherwise useless) motorola atrix dev conference, the FFC driver for the atrix is written BY motorola. Android 2.2 does NOT have a standard FFC driver and so every phone that has an FFC and is running 2.1 or 2.2 is using their own FFC driver. That is why Tango and Qik did not work for the Atrix immediately when it was released, and Qik had to release an Atrix-only version of the app.
When gingerbread comes across all devices, it will have a standard FFC driver. But until then, every company running 2.2 uses their own and that is why these aren't compatible apps.

More than likely, it's because AT&T didn't want Skype to release it yet.. the carriers have a surprising amount of influence on app developers. Think of how the Inspire and Atrix still don't have HSUPA enabled whereas the iPhone 4 has had it since its release. My guess is they don't want to overload their already fragile network

Exactly! if i do want to use video, i use Tango Video Calls (from market)
a mirror is all you need if the application can use the camera on back, just a bit awkward
That'd be just plain stupid. If you want video calls on the go just buy a new phone with a front facing camera.
have you ever thought about using speaker phone and rear camera ? why is this stupid ? I might use video calling once a month, I dont need front camera

Working GTalk with Video

I noticed that the Atrix supports GTalk with video, so I've robbed a couple of files to test on my O2X.
IT WORKS
So I've put them in a handy CWM .zip for you.
Tested it fine by calling someone in a browser, although the little window on the phone that shows what they see is upside down (which was fixed in CM7 #98). Not a big deal at all.
http://www.mediafire.com/file/d0orhj0jucrhdzi/gtalkvid-signed.zip
Or as a modified Temasek GApps pack (for 2.3.5): http://www.mediafire.com/file/ptwkbhjtkqy1k61/gapps-gb-20110727-gtalkvid-signed.zip
Only for Gingerbread
Yessssss !
Thanks a lot Rusty
Nice finding, don't forget to share with Paul!
Also please add that this only works on gingerbread, before people brick there devices!!

Yes, and again please put in big red letters only for 2.3.4
There's also a market installer if you'd rather not flash a zip; it has a couple of features like version selection:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.brainwashstudio.talkinstaller
As far as I know, the Market one doesn't actually work on the O2X, hence this
It's to do with the Tegra's lack of NEON.
Quality work rusty !!
Any chance of this being bult into the next cm nightly?
Zero chance, CM doesn't include GApps remember
But once it's installed, it's persistent.
..almost there..
I tested it with the latest CM 89 / BB 218 / RIL 218 / Over wifi just now and it works much better..
..Except for my picture being upside down. The receiving picture is fine. Turning it upside down or sideways didn't help. :-/
Yeah it's odd that, you'd think if one was wrong, they both would be.

I'm using it fine, I think you're getting it confused with the Skype with video support which uses NEON instructions.
No, the original GTalk 1.3 wouldn't do video on the O2X which is what I was basing that on. If the one in the Market does then it's been modified, and if I'd known I wouldn't have fiddled around packing this up
Talk isn't on the market; the app I was referring too is a Talk 1.3 installer. I'm pretty sure it grabs the same modded apk.
Yeah that's the thing I was talking about (as you posted a link it's hard to get confused )
I tried it on my LG O2X and it works well but I have the video upside down but i hope they will fix this!
Once LG will release a 2.3.4 official then we will have all features working!
Stop thinking that, LG releasing 2.3.4 will be of no benefit to CM.
Also, commits overnight have fixed the upside-down-ness. I'm uploading a kang as we type...

[Q] Cyanogen on Droid 3?

I apologize in advance for asking a question that has no doubt been asked on here before and posted but I cant find my answer. I just recently came to Motorolla from HTC because I needed to switch to Verizon for work and the D3 was perfect. After looking around on here and on the CM site Im still very confused...Is there a CM download (preferably CM7.1) for the D3 or are people just trying to make something work on it. Im not even rooted yet because if I cant get CM Im not sure I even want to. If anyone can answer this for me and direct me to a download it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all and I apologize again for asking a dumb question.
Yes Hashcode has a cm7 download in the Droid 3 developers forum....it's still got a few minor bugs but overall it's awesome I've been running it for quite sometime now...I don't have a link but look in the dev forum...good luck.

That's fine with me, the camera isn't that great anyway but it would be nice to have. How about wifi and GPS? I had CM7 on my G2 and there were a lot of issues with that stuff. Bith are a big deal for me. What's the best bet as far as getting root? Is Psouda's one touch pretty fool proof? I would hate to brick my new baby!

I've read the external SD also doesn't work. Is that true?

Even if so, that's not really that big of a deal. The phones got 16 gb internal anyway, what more do you need? Lol

Both SD cards are working in both CM7 and CM9. It's their naming convention that throws people off:
/emmc is the internal emmc storage area (called "/sdcard" in the stock ROM)
/sdcard is the actual sdcard (it's called "/sdcard-ext" in the stock ROM)
And actually the camera will work. The hardware camera does not, but there are a couple software cameras from the market that will. I use camera zoom fx. With very little problems. If you're like me and the camera isn't that big of a deal, these soft cams will work good enough.

What do you mean the hardware camera doesn't work and software camera does?
For any camera soft to work the hardware has to be working...
Do you mean, you can't take pictures with the inbuilt camera app, and can take pics with camera zoom fx?
If so, then the camera works, just the default app does not...
Is this what you mean? If so, then great... If not, what're you sayin'?

Thanks for this information, very important.
What are CM9's shortcomings in usage on the Droid 3 in your opinion, based on experience? Drawbacks, when compared to the default ROM, any?

I like ProCapture. You can either buy it from the market or do some Google searching to "try it before you buy". (But I really suggest buying it if you like it.)

I also recommend ProCapture. The pictures come out very crisp.
