Not all AVI files are compressed using the same video codecs, so some will work and some won't, all depends on the codecs.
Do a search for video codecs, it might help.
Although this is not the correct method to solve the issue, most of the newer ROMs support more video codecs, so try an update, if you haven't already. Or you can try converting the AVI to MP4, DivX, etc. There are even some apps that convert video files on the phone (no need for PC conversion).
so it's not a phone issue, thanks at all
Try using mobo player. It plays basically any file
What's a signature?

Hi!
I m trying to get my TTYN II to playback avi files but cant seem to make it happen... I've tried downloading the Core player but that gives an error saying it doest have the MPEG-4 codec? Where do I get the codec's from?
Thanks,
Neil
it shouldnt ask for mp4 codec if you are playing an avi file. different formats. did you download the latest version of core player? make sure you get the one for pocket pc and the latest version is 0.72RC1. avi works fine for me.
AVI is just a file format, it has nothing to do with the codec. So there can be MPEG4 AVIs. Actually most are (DivX and Xvid are MPEG4). MPEG4 videos don't necessarily have the .mp4 extension.
Don't know how to install the codec though, don't have a Kaiser yet lol.
If you installed the core player (http://www.coreplayer.com/) then you should be able to play avi files. What version are you using ?
Try to uninstall and reinstall it and try again.

I'll be watching for responses as I'm also wanting to play MPEG 4 files (with avi extensions - from ATI's Multimedia Centre Software on my desktop PC) on my TyTN II. I'd prefer just to use a codec to provide this functionality in the built in version of pocket media player (what I currently use for wmv files).

Try this then:

Many thanks!
Thank you for that format expansion cab link texarcana, and it's free too. Will try it out on Cristmas day if I have the time.
[Edit] Alas it didn't allow playing of my ATI Multimedia Centre produced mp4 AVI files - back to wmv for me.

So does this work any better than TCPMP at playing back mp4 files?
Better ? Prolly not.
But instead of installing another player, you just add some codecs with it instead.
Anyway, my personal favourite is the core mobile player (which isnt free)
While I still haven't published the "full" Multimedia Bible, the H.264 Bible at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=The H.264 (a.k.a. MPEG-4 Part 10 and AVC) Bible (in the Wiki) explains a LOT of these issues (what MP4 files are, what they can contain, what players and what codec packs are needed to play them etc)
Ive been using Pocket DivX Player 0.8 and it play7s avi files perfectly
http://www.pocketpcfreeware.mobi/download-pocket-divx-player-0-8.html
its not bad for freeware
Hi all,
I have downloaded some FLV files from youtube recently. normally i can open those files in my windows Mobile using TCPMP. nowadays i could not manage to open/play the files.
Just want to know if Youtube has done some codings so that the TCPMP are not able to read flv files or how.. looking forward for any reply..
Regards
I've noticed this as well. It seems some FLVs are now encoded with a new video codec. When you continue to play anyway you just get the audio, not the video.
"Player: Video codec (On2 VP6) not supported by the player!". This is with CorePlayer 1.3.2.
This was with a movie from justin.tv, couldn't find a youtube one this instant with the error. Pretty sure it's the same error though.
Anyone out there manage to play their FLV files using TCPMP? Wondering if there's any codecs to download for Windows Mobile to play FLV files from youtube.
Same thing, some youtube links just the sound is working, while the video is blank green color!
Even .3gp files extension plays the same, green video with sound only.

What app are you using to watch videos and what format are the videos in? I found using Handbrake to convert videos to mp4 or mv4, iPod Touch format, works wonderfully with the stock reader.

I Try to Watch vidéo in mpeg4 ( divx ) format or mkv, Why it doesnt work?
what program are you trying to view it with, The only programs that can watch mkv are rock player and 1 other i cant remember what its called. To watch an mkv you need to make sure it is 480p otherwise it will studder out on the device
If you are trying to use the default software it will not work because it doesnt know how to read the mkv package
which program i need to use for watch avi vidéo ?
RockPlayer will also play avi files, but some people have reported some problems with the quality, like audio-video out of sync or stuttering.
It may be worthwhile to simply convert to video to mp4 using handbrake (the latest beta build works) and playing it with the built in player (simply called Video, I believe)
yes i heard something about the ’OMAP3621 who can managing the encoding, but this function is locked
Hello everybody ! In first sorry for my english i'm french
I have a problem my 2x run cyannogen kang, it's all good except divx playback, the image pixelize And the Sound is horrible.
do you have an idea for my problem ?
Nobody for help me ?
Have you tried playing the video in a different player, such as mxplayer?

Maybe its just a bad video file, try a different divx file and see if mx can play it and use software decoding not hardware.
i'm sorry my problem is not what i can't divx only, today i see what every media i put in the phone with cable using mass storage option, don't working. every files are corrupted but when i transfer everything by using a card reader, it's ok. i don't why and i don't know what i'll doing for resolve this problem
I have 2 players for playback namely Mobo and Rockplayer. They can handle videos like MKV and DivX. Maybe the video you are trying to play is encoded differenly or 1080P (other formats) which regular players can't handle.
And try "Soft Decoding" if Rockplayer does not work
try mobo player...
Try MX Video Player. Has specific codec for Tegra 2. If it doesn't work, try Soul Video, another good option.
If your device has GB rom, try diceplayer trial version.
Several people have recommended MX Player as the best app for playing back MKV video files.
Which apps are Xperia Z users using with good results?
Is an additional app necessary, or does the Xperia Z playback MKV videos on its own?
On the other hand, if MKVs can't playback at all...what video format should I convert them to?
Many thanks for any advice/anecdotes.
Sony's stock app can play MKV files so you don't really need any 3rd party apps.
MX Player is the best app to play every possible format - honestly, i've never seen a file that MX cannot play. Think of it as of VLC.
MX Player is the best one, be sure to enable the HW+ decoder in settings. It allows you to play nearly any video with hardware acceleration (and Bravia Engine).

How are you managing to do this? The Sony go software recognises the mkv files but always trys to convert them during transfer. Sometimes showing as 3 or more hours to copy 1 file

Just copy without converting. It will work fine.
The stock player is quite good but isn't compatible with the audio CODECS in some MKV containers.
I find Dice player the best at the moment. It plays everything i give it.
