[Q] Why does many installed apps increase lag?

Can't see why this is the case (but it obviously is) as long as I have lots of free disk space and not many apps running at the same time. Any logic in this?

There seems to be several things causing this, but the two key issues are:
The moviNAND (the internal flash drive/"SSD") firmware seems to have an issue with fsync() taking extremely long. E.g., it slows down whenever a file is written/updated on the internal storage.
RFS, the file system used by Samsung is buggy as hell and corrupts data after a while.
There are several topics on these issues in the Android Development forum. There are also several "lag fixes" trying their best to overcome these issues. Go check them out

We have no idea if that is ACTUALLY true.. Just because fsck picked some things up on 1 phone, doesn't mean it happens everywhere.. Furthermore, it doesn't mean the problems detected affect operations

that has no truth at all about more apps slowing down the phone, my phone is the prove

Before jpk i didn't noticed slowdowns with aprox 100 apps, now i do on jpk =/
Prolly that all pictures/links/info stays in his workmemory?

and that is what most people does not realize
they need to Optimize the phone, most people take it for granted
the phone is not a phone, the phone is a mini computer that fits in your hands
just like your big desktop PC it can go crazy if you don't take care of it

Can you tell me why with the same apps installed on the Nexus it doesn't lag like the SGS?
Can you stop blaming users when is the phone which doesn't work as expected?

just install autorunkiller and a good task manager then all the problems will be gone
stock ROM is very fast when you maintain the phone

With autokiller the phone is still laggy.
And please, stop thinking I'm stupid or I don't know a **** about smartphones, ROM's changing, firmware or knowing how a phone must run.

I have about 190 Apps installed and do not experience any diferene in overall speed of the phone. But only because i know that a lot of the programms start on boot and stay in background.
I have more than 15 apps turned off with the full version of autorun killer to prevent the auto restart of the apps. Otherwise the phone would definetaly slow down.
It´s really incredible what apps start on the boot!

Do you need to be rooted ti use all of the functions in autorun killer? I am not rooted.
Can you compile a breif list of the "biggest culprits" to stop with this utility to gain back the most speed and efficiency? I am a bit nervous that I will stop the wrong items and somehow damage my phone...

Autokiller and task killers are not the solution here! Quick lesson on Android, and why having even A SINGLE BAD APP is going to ruin your whole phone!
Android has something called an 'Intent'. In order to start an app, an intent is made by your launcher or a button you press, and the Android system reads this intent and works out what app it needs to start up.
There is a second type of intent though, called a 'Broadcast Intent'. This is an intent that is sent out to anything that is registered to listen to it. This means that an app can register to listen to all sorts of events, such as battery level changed, application start, or a tons of other things. Even if the application is closed, if it is registered as a listener, Android will start it right back up so it can deal with the intent. If the intent comes every 5 seconds, Android will run this app every 5 seconds even if you have a taskkiller killing the app.
The only real solution is to not install apps which are bad! Finding bad apps is a real mission, too. Hopefully in the future, utilities will be available to let us track down these terrible apps, but till then, you'll have to work it out yourself.

No need for Root to use all features of Autorun Killer. I would disable only the apps you know and which you do not need at startup and running in background, such as (in my case) Paypal, App Center from Androidpit, Daily Briefing, Photoshop Express, Word Press, TweetCaster, etc.
Every of these apps works normal, even when deactivatet on startup.
So unless you do not disable system apps (must be previously set enabled in settings) you are safe.

There is an app called Autostarts at 0.95$.
It shows what is launched au startup, when you enable/disable wifi etc.
It think it gives insight on how apps seems launching out of nowhere.
I also reccomend Watchdog Task Manager Lite, the free version.
It does not kill anything, but notifies and logs the bad apps that consumes over a certain CPU percentage.

How to make your Atrix HD(or Any Android Phone) more efficient!!!

I have recently upgraded from my 3yr old beloved HD2, the most amazing device ever to play with to Motorola Atrix HD which is THE ONLY Motorola device that is compatible with Tmobile 3G and of course 4G since it support 1700 bandwidth along with 1800 and 2100. Anyways...as I was playing with this phone like rooting, installing apps and removing ATT bloatware....I wanted to share some of the things with you all. I hope you find it useful......
-If you want your phone to be rooted....My first advice is not to upgrade this phone to Jelly Bean as it is harder to root it with JB than it is with ICS. I have used every single Android version in my good old HD2 and I can tell you this there is not any striking difference between these to versions as I have used both and using ICS was better to play with for me...what really made me mad was that my purchased Copilot live 8 app does not recognize my purchased Svox US Grace tts anymore...it did in ICS ...Again, I am not a developer, and developers may argue otherwise
-If you willfully or accidentally upgraded to JB please follow this thread(courtesy of DAN ) for rooting instructions...

It make may not be a very simple for some of you but be patient, read all the posts and keep trying and you will succeed. This is the only option to root Atrix HD with JB and unfortunately there is no way you can rollback to ICS to get the easy root. For instructions on rooting Atrix HD ICS see here(Also THANKS to DAN )

Without rooting you can't really do much to make your device more efficient....since all utility apps require root access!!!
Now, if you are rooted......AND you have stock ICS or JellyBean....follow my tips if you will, you will see more efficiency in terms app fluidity and power saving....
-Install System App Remover or Titanium Backup Pro to uninstall all the bloatware that are useless and just sitting on your device and memory for no apparent reason....here is hint: if you have not used an app in last 4-6 weeks, chances are you will never use it/them. You will better success with Titanium backup pro in removing them than System app remover....but be very careful what you delete if are not sure just leave it alone!!! HINT: freeze app first see the effect, be sure then uninstall
-Install Startup manager or any app that does this, to block unnecessary process or app to load up...again if you are not sure leave it alone!!!
-Install any task manager/killer and set it auto kill every 30/15mins or when device is off...closes running apps, frees memory and saves battery.
-Optional: install Rom manager or Rom tool box and fix permission if you have a lots of apps installed in your device. As the claim, this should make the apps run smoother.....No offense to the developers, I personally have not seen and practical effect of this step(it may be just in theory), not in my HD2 and not in Atrix HD...but I like to be on the safe side..it does not hurt!!!
-If you are not a heavy gamer then, install SetCpu or Antutu or something of your choice to scale down the CPU a bit...you don't really need that much speed for normal stuff and you will save a lot of battery this way.
-More battery will be saved if you configure built-in app called SmartActions to a profile that suits you. You can also install auto on/off 2G/3G/4G. I personally don't use it...as it takes long time to switch back to 3G/4G when you wake up your device and you need to use internet right away...not after 10mins..lolll
-If you are in ICS install Widgetlocker app and set it up to Easywake mode to wake your device by pressing volume key....it will save the torture on your power button any time you want to wake up device...NOTE: This App option does not work on JB....so your only substitute is to install WakeUp Screen app to wake up device by shaking instead....TIP: set up threshold to as low as possible so that you don't destroy the inner structure of your Atrix or let it slip out of your hand or smash it on the ground by shaking it too hard....you should not sacrifice your phone over the power button, right???
-Install Lux auto brightness app and adjust/lower your brightness to your choice...I personally think it is too bright in stock mode...saves battery.
WELL........I guess that's all the utility apps you need as far as I can think of and your device will be more efficient......all of these can be installed from the infamous google play....
If you use custom rom via safestrap method...many/some of these features are/may be built in or customizable within the rom...you won't need third party apps...I myself have not installed custom rom although I am flashaholic and I still have my HD2 for that...but I like to wait the custom roms to mature a bit more since I see complaints of buggy camera or sound or bluetooth etc......And since I have customized and cleaned up the stock rom via above stated apps....I don't think I will ever try or need to flash my Atrix HD since it run perfectly up to my expectation....for flashing rom matter I have my HD2 lolllll
NOTE FOR THOSE WHO WILL SCREW UP REGARDLESS: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE AND IF YOU ARE NOT SURE. DON'T DO IT...SIMPLE!

Our CPU is of 1.5 ghz, how much shud we set it at?

I set it up up at 1024...fast enough for me...see for itself you can always change it also make sure to check set at reboot option...I use antutu CPU control. You can also also use diff profile option like...at screen screen set it up around 600 or so...will save even more juice...

Yea the good old underclocking when the screen is off i have been doing since i had my HTC Incredible saves so much battery nice tips btw.

[Q] Ram issues, often less than 256 MB free

The title is the real starting place of my issue. Out of the devices 2 GB, 1.5 GB is the average amount that is used and its really starting to impact the performance of the phone. The few things that I have tried never seem to be a more permanent solution. My Moto X is Rooted with a Sunshine Unlocked Bootloader.
Normally on my phone I have the following running in background:
tasker & Related plug ins
Xposed framework
Some widgets( Evernote, weather & Calendar)
Here is what I've tried so far:
Greenify, to help manage what apps are operating in the background.
Uninstalled a large number of my tasker plug ins
Reduced the number of Xposed plugins that I have running
Reduced the number of widgets that I have my launcher running
Here are my ideas that I have left but I don't know what it will fix.
Find an app launcher with lower RAM requirement that still meets my needs. Currently using an old version of GO Launcher I like.
Wipe the phone and start over with the stock AT&T 4.4.4 ROM.
Another possibly related issues is that I've been having apps crash often, like Touchless controls and Contacts, but when I try and send the bug report it has my own address listed instead of Motorolla's.

have you tried flashing a stock firmware through RSD LITE? have you tried doing a hard reset? from stock recovery? your problem sounds like that a 3rd party app has screwed up your phone... And please dont use 3rd party launchers... They cause alot of problems.

When you say hard reset do you mean a reboot? Factory Reset? I'm not 100% sure what your talking about.

If you asking to me stick with stock launcher I don't think I can do that. There are a lot of features the stock launcher is missing like Folders that sync to folders within the App Draw, just the way they display an open folder, the ways you can organize the app folder, how you hide apps you don't use, ie keyboards and the visuals associated with the uninstall process. But if you have suggestions on how to resolve some of the feature differences I'd be interested to hear.

You should check the running apps in the settings also check the cached background processes.
You'll find the culprit there.
Post screenshot if possible.
It's probably Facebook or something like that

What would you say is a good threshold to use to consider if an app is a problem? Would you say more than 25MB? 50MB?
A screen shot isn't going to be possible until after 7 pm

Apps like chrome consistently use 100mb..
Otherwise 50mb

Take that last hope..Rsd lite your stock firmware and all your problems will be vanished.. Im sure..
A hard reset is a reset which you do thorough the Bootloader of your phone without booting to actual android home screen... Like you open your Boot loader by pressing appropriate keys and select recovery and Erase Cache and Factory reset from there... Google Hard reset and learn about it. Its really important to learn about hard reset if you own an android device..
As far as your launcher is concerned i can understand... And i dont really think that the launcher might be causing the problem... You just need an RSD LITE flash to completely wipe your phone and bring it to the factory state and make it completely fresh... I bet rsd lite flash will fix your problem because it erases the whole device and reflashes everything like boot,modem,system,kernal etc... GO FOR RSD LITE FLASH... and please take extra precautions before Flashing through RSD LITE.. because its risky if you do it in the wrong way.... Make sure to find the exact firmware of your phone which matches the carrier.. and also check the bootloader version of the firmware.. DOWNGRADING THE FIRMWARE WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE PERMANENTLY.. so always upgrade or flash the same firmware as you have now.. Take extra precautions.. Good luck..

It is Linux based, free RAM is wasted RAM. The system will put stuff into memory as needed, and remove it as needed. The system tries to keep as much stuff in memory as possible to improve performance so it doesn't have to put it back into memory if you launch it again. It is how the Android memory killer works, and the kernel is what controls the free memory.

if this is true why do i have more performance issue when the ram is full? I have to wait for the phone to respond to the touches on the screen.

If that is the case, then your device is likely not freeing memory properly. Either an app is not closing properly, or you have a lot of background apps running that can't be freed from memory, or you have a rogue app killing your phone.

As he said, "free memory" will always be very low.
This is part of why people freaked out over vista... As modern kernels do, it was using most available ram for tasks that might happen because this memory can be cleared instantly. But vista actually reported this memory usage, and people freaked out, not being used to the concept. I believe they adjusted how memory was reported in 7...

If you have a terminal emulator the command "top" will show you memory usage by category so you can see not only how much is free, but how much COULD be free at a moments notice if needed. This is what you want to know.
"atop" is another version of top, it reports slightly different statistics and can be a little more readable...(it may be htop not atop, if one doesnt work try the other. They both exist but only one is prepackaged and... I forget.)
You should also be able to look at processes to see what is using up significant amounts of memory....

Hey all. Long time Blackberry user here. I have a couple questions about my note 5 I just picked up.
- Can I root the device (I'm on verizon)? I've done a bunch of googling and so far it seems like verizon has done a good job at making it impossible?
- The main reason I want to root is to just to rid my phone of all the JUNK apps I don't want. If rooting my phone isn't possible, what's the best way to prevent the apps from taking up space and using up data? With no sdcard slot, space will be a premium, and I'd like to free up as much as possible.

Right now without root access on our Verizon Galaxy Note 5s there's no way to get rid of the apps to free up space. However there is a way to disable the apps by using Package Disabler but you have to make sure that you don't disable anything if you don't know what it does because you can end up causing the phone not to work or not boot in which case you'll have to do a restore and lose everything. I actually made the mistake and disabled some things that I shouldn't have and it caused the phone to get stuck at the Verizon logo so just be careful what you do with it! Also if you disable certain things that the system needs it can actually become detrimental to the battery life and make it run out faster. Personally I'd say to just leave it alone unless it's actually doing something because on mine I noticed that if I don't use them or tap into them they won't run anyway.

Here's a few pointers, what i do (managing free space)
Firstly, i am also on a branded version. No root, stock Rom.
I found that i could uninstall most of my carriers bloatware,
( see... Device /Settings /App Manager)
Other system bloat apps, i just disabled in App Manager.
Check system apps like...
Eg S Voice.. Briefing.. S HEALTH ?, (if you can disable.)
Secondly your stock Smart Manager, /App Powersaving, the apps i hardly use, i set to always... optimizing.
I used to store movies on my ext Sd card, (but as
we have no Ext Sd card) , i keep my movies on
a mini OTG SanDisk. If i want to watch,i plug /attach, OTG and watch.( Saves a lot of space)
Eventually, you just "adapt" to the limited space.

yeah , dont root it. It voids your warranty, and also few features will not work. Like private mode, Samsung Pay etc

RAM always at 70% on MI5

Hello fellow MI5 users,
I received my phone one week ago and I start having some issues with the RAM. In fact, at the start of the phone, it's already at 70% filled up which is too much for me. Indeed I use a lot of RAM and I'm that type of guy who let the apps running in background everytime because I keep opening them everytime. I was wondering if it was possible to have a link to a better ROM because I guess it's the problem and also a link for a tutorial on how to flash it I'm a newbie in this type of manipulation but I'm very interested so I hope you will help me guys. By the way, my MIUI version is the MIUI 8 Global 6.8.18. I honestly don't know what can i give as information but I'll answer ASAP at any questions

This is working as design - Android keeps apps in RAM to reduce I/O on resuming from background - faster & more energy efficient.
You can change the number of background processes via the development settings or you can kill apps on closing.

I've seen that indeed but it was set at standard so I'll probably put it at 3 I guess. How should I set the memory optimization? I've read it should be set off, altough I tried middle and I feel comfortable like that?
Is it normal to start at 70% without anything started ?

For the 3GB version? Pretty much. MIUI is horrible.
After booting I typically had 1.3GB / 3.0GB free but after a while this averaged to around 650MB free.

free ram is useless ram , which cant accelerate anything

I know that but I need more because I use multi-task a lot. Is there a way to change the ROM so I have more space to work with? Even if the ROM itself is beautiful.
Indeed it's the 3gb version 32gb. It have lags sometimes and I think it's due to the full RAM. Can I have a link to a custom ROM which works fine on this device?

I'm a little confused, you want as much RAM available but you want as many processes in the background as well? That sounds contradicting to me. Memory optimization maps to ZRAM, if you set it off there will be no memory compression and thus even less processes will be kept in the background. If you set it high, you can have as many processes as possible, but there could be lag due to (de)compression time overhead.

Try different Rom
Try to use a different Rom. On the Stock Rom is a lot of bloatware which is using your RAM too.
First you need to get an Bootloader unlock permission and have to unlock the BL.
It could take up to 10 Days to get the permission from Xiaomi

After that you have to flash a recovery like trwp via ADB. Google it for videos or threads how to do it.

After that you can flash a developer Rom.
I use the Resurrection Remix and it works fine. The CM 13 stucks in Bootloop. Maybe because I made a full wipe and had to sideload my rom.
Because you don't have a SD card option you have to have the room installed on your hard drive. But just follow the description below

It took me just 1 day to get the unlock permit but don't try do do it without it. You brick your phone.
The RR Rom works really fine. Fingerprint and everything. It has no bloatware and you have to get the gaps like in the description. Arm64 nano seems enough.

Normally the android system kills the unused apps even in background. But i also experienced lack in multitasking.

I think you misunderstood the OP question, he wanted more free RAM at start in order to have as many as possible apps in the background.

In fact, I'm just doing some research before asking because I'm very new. I have found some videos but they are pretty old and not on this phone but I guess it works more or less the same way

OK, in that case, just open Security->Permissions->Autostart and disable those which aren't immediately needed upon start. I have 18 autostart items (mostly system monitoring & social media apps) and I usually start with 1.5 GB free RAM.
