It is my understanding that THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE. Please correct me if i am wrong.
When I say cold booting I mean entering CWRecovery from the phone powered off.
Not possible

We need to unlock the bootloader before we can Boot into CWM, and lets not forget OC'ing.
Really don't need to unlock the bootloader. Its 2nt and it is being used by a couple devp. That haven't released it yet.

Hey guys I'm very new to all this, I just used the z4root (Permenent root) method on my g1 dream and I would like to try a new rom on it but for some reason rom manager will not flash clockwork mod recovery or amon on it, it keeps saying that an error has occured when trying to access special privileges or something like that. does is matter if I'm using the free version or not? and do I need to put a custome hboot or bootloader on the phone as well? I've been reading for the last two days through these forums and I'm really lost and confused on how to do this. I understand that I must flash the rom from the custom recovery but can I get to the recovery through the hboot/bootloader once the custom recovery is flashed? Please help anyone. I appreciate it.
Never used z4 so cant really help there but i do know that you need a custom recovery to flash anything. So the question is can you get a recovery flashed. Can you boot into the os and log in? if so maybe you can get a terminal from the market and flash amonra from there with the instructions in his op. Not sure but worth a try.
z4root dont work proplerly try unviersal androot
Cool, hey johnson8 I really appreciate your help...so you're saying that the z4root has something to do with my phone not being able to download three recovery?

It might. I rooted mine the one click method a long time ago. Before these apps came out. Never liked rom manager either to be honest. I would try the androot the other Guy suggested really. See how it goes

Go to ezterry thread on 14 MB hack and fastboot flash new amonra recovery the radio and spl. Follow all instructions in there and try again. That will get u a good recovery new radio/spl and more ram comes with it. The new roms need that combo.

This is the guide you need to set up adb on your computer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
If you have any questions i will try to help. After this is done you should be set up to run adb and fastboot commands from your pc.
Do everything in this guide except the recovery image. You will be doing that via ezterry's thread with amonra recovery. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck
Ok will do..I appreciate all your help and have a safe trip..
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
No problem. I check frequently so if u have any questions I'll try to answer promptly. Also u will see shadowch31 in ezterry's thread among others. He can help guide as well. Just follow instructions exactly and don't freak out and pull your battery during any of the process even if it looks hung. Good luck

You can only change the kernel and baseband on these phones with a OTA update from Motorola. Our bootloader is locked.
You can return the phone to stock software with one of the FXR apps that are available. But the baseband and kernel will remain unchanged. I used this one successfully last weekend: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/5484-r3l3as3droot-and-43v3r-root-for-the-bionic-v21/
Will the method mentioned on the RootWiki site also remove the bootstrap/CWM if installed?
Yes it will
So basically I can load bootstrap and cwm from koush and something like liberty and then go back to the way it was when unboxed with no sign of any changes? The reason I ask is I am still in my 14 day return window.

After installing CWM make a virgin backup before making ANY changes.

So I been trying to root my phone for about an hour now. I rooted, un-rooted then rooted again, and it seems to have work (obviously you can't tell when your phone is rooted, but oh well). I'm kind of a noob in the Droid 3 section, but then I went to the Market place and downloaded the "ROM Manager", downloaded the CM9 recovery, and had the app boot into recovery but to my surprise, it doesn't work for some reason. I don't under what else I can do, am I rooted? Do I need to manually install CM9 recovery? I just want ICS on my phone, and this is driving me crazy.

Do you have Super User app on your phone ?
Yup. I do, I have no idea where it came from though.
Sent from my DROID3 using xda premium
Does it open? Look up the thread for boot two roms at once in the genreal section. Follow that and you will have ICS. You should wait tho, as a new build will be up tonight for ics.
Sent from my XT862 using Tapatalk
Yup, it opens and shows the applications that I allow, does this mean that I'm rooted for sure? I'll definitely wait for the new ICS rom tonight, just want to make sure if I can boot into recovery. I tried using the "X" and power button but it just gives me the triangle with the "!" logo inside.
Sent from my DROID3 using xda premium
I believe in the droid 3...you hold the Power + M for recovery. Not the X.
Root checker is an app that will tell you if you are rooted. You need to either install the droid 3 bootstrap or safestrap to get cwm recovery.

Its kind of either or.
You can hold Power + M, and use the volume keys to select recovery, or you can hold Power + X and it will go to recovery as well.

It gave ya the right screen. But that takes you to the stock recovery. To install roms you will need Clockworkmod Recovery or Safestrap Recovery.

Go with safestrap. Especially if you're new to this.

Well for me from manager doesn't work.. the recovery it installs does not start from app... never tried other way . Uninstaled RM and installed only hashcode's safestrap so you don't need to start in recovery.: it will give you the option to open the cwm menu from boot by pressing menu button when prompted and if nothing done then start normally..
:in hashcode's blog are: instructions for flashing cm9 with safestrap
Good look

No not at all. For 1 our device isn't supported and for 2 we have already figured out a workaround to the locked bootloader
Sent from my XT860 using xda premium
It may not be supported yet but if they do add our phone to it, yes it will help. We may have a Kexec kernel but an unlocked bootloader will make things far easier.
Sent from my XT862 using xda premium
Will for one it says page not found so im saying they are not unlocking the bootloader but it it does not matter because of the fact that we have a workaround.

Apparently it got posted and pulled and I think reposted. Android police or droid had the supported device list
Sent from my XT860 using xda premium
If you look here (https://motorola-global-portal.cust...sion/L3RpbWUvMTM0NTI1NDk1NC9zaWQvU3VDYlRZM2w=) only the Photon, Xoom, and RAZR dev can be unlocked. And the RAZR dev should be unlocked anyways... it IS the dev edition. This means nothing, and with working Kexec, I don't see why we'd even change since everything now is being written for Kexec and development for this phone ins't exactly active, we essentially have 2 people developing new things for it. There are more GNex kernels than there are D3 devs.

At this point what difference can it make. Either way we can load a kernel, just need the kernel to be built
Sent from my XT860 using xda premium
Kexec makes this pointless. The reason development stopped initially was because making a ducati binary work with the Gingerbread stock kernel for ICS was impossible. Also doing a kernel module custom was too. Now even though we have ducati and it won't work for the camera we can do other things like Chrome. Also, Hash was going to modify his custom kernel for a camera driver for us as his next approach. This gives us options we didn't have before. The fact that we use Kexec is better because it is flashed on top of the kernel existing at first and it is just a ROM. If it is a bad flash all you have to do is just reflash from Safestrap. We couldn't do that before.

Is is possible at all? I want to get cynogenmod from here
Not yet... If we ever bypass the boot loader. Or are able to write to the boot loader it'd be out tomorrow.
But for now we can only flash signed files.

So If I cant stand touch wiz and I'm still with-in the 14 day period should I take back my phone for a ???(advice on a phone) or do you think this might happen with-in some time period? Sorry I haven't had an android since the hero lmfao
Go into development and look at safe strap specifically though the xnote ROM
I am betting sooner or later someone will find a way to create a second boot loader... But yeah no promises.
Sent from my XT907 using xda app-developers app
There's no say on how soon we will get things like CyanogenMod yet. It was hard to pick out when things like SafeStrap would come out to flash somewhat custom ROMs. You can get an unlocked Note 3 and them activate it with AT&T. That will support Cyanogen before the AT&T Note 3 will I believe.
Return your at&t note 3 and get the t mobile one. Unlocked boot loader. You can flash anything you want on that one and it works on at&t after you root it and use regionlock away by chainfire
