Dev Questions? - LG Thrill 4G

I just got the LG Thrill today and I love the phone so far, my question is. Should I return it and go back to my Inspire or wait? Because it looks like the Dev section here is dead and I don't know whether soon there will be any changes or updates. Any advice? 0_o

No one wants to dev on 2.2 when 2.3 is only weeks away. When Gingerbread is released, it should pick up.
I want to thank the Devs that have been so kind to give us the mods so far with 2.2. Can't wait for 2.3 and of course CM7 (which is in process as we speak)

So when 2.3 is released what do I do? Do I have to update my device? Can I update it if it's rooted?

no your going to need to go back to stock rom and remove CWM if you have it on and unroot... or you will not be able to get the OTA... but when it comes out GTG said he would grab the update and make a rom right away for it.. so im not worried about it...

So I won't need to go back? I can just like wait for the new rom to come out and flash it? Or what? And do you think MIUI will be ported anytime soon?

Personally I'm just gonna wait for gtg to make the new gb rom when it comes out... I'm not gonna wanna go all the way back to stock to get gingerbread which will have all the bloat and stupid waste stuff and limited data speeds...

My thoughts exactly. Not worth the effort to go back to stock just to get an OTA when our devs will make it better soon there after.

Sounds good I'm looking forward to the release of CM7, Leedroid, or MIUI. I'm hoping more towards MIUI, because I believe that it would be beautifully ported on this phone. And with CM7 and Leedroid this thing would just fly.

You can flash Optimus 3D Roms with no problems besides loss of "4G". They have more Roms, the 2D to 3D converter, and CM7.

which gingerbread rom is this?

first off this a tech demo and not a stable day to day use rom. You will not be able to use this normally on the phone (reagular reboots and instability) it was simply a taste of gingerbread for some devs here. I would highly recommend not flashing especially since you aren't really experienced yet. You should flash one of the many stable roms in the dev section, but if you insist on it, here is the thread for it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887037
i tried dling this rom and installing from clockwork recovery as a zip and it says it installed and takes me right back to the original rom i started with. also is there a kernel i should flash to make things more stable. thanks

I'm pretty sure you have to flash the 2.3 kernel for it to boot into gb. But as joeshmoe said, it isn't a good idea if you aren't experienced (I bricked a capivate trying to get this to work, seriously, it isn't a good idea). There's plenty of great froyo roms out and some nice gb themes, I'd recommend just taking that route.

It *is* being developed for the Captivate, but not on a native Captivate kernel. The reorient, headphone, button fixes are native to the i9000 port when it detects the hardware as a Captivate.

Don't flash it. Seriously. Codeworkx/Coolya were digging through the source, and the nexus s kernel source has differing voltages than the galaxy s. ie, it can actually destroy parts of your hardware. Wait a couple of weeks, the rc for CM7 should be out by then.

well i dont plan to use the rom long term just wanted to flash to it and mess with it then probably switch back to a froyo rom shortly after. but having an issue getting it to run. if i download a kernel with voodoo and run the lagfix to ext4 then flash the rom should that get it up and running?
edit: went ahead and flashed perception and then the rom, reboots constantly, so looks like ill go back to perception and tough it out with a gingerbread theme. Gonna miss that lock animation.... ok now anyknow know how i get back to recovery mode, or do i have to flash back to stock? and reroot?
edit2: dont flash this rom, waste of time, just play with your friends nexus S, back to serendipity

Gingerbread for optimus 2x was released in uk?

My Dutch O2x IMEI actually still points me to a 20110226 rom release, amazingly! I bought it from a store directly without any contract. No sign of any updates here.
If you will follow sources of this post it will lead you to site talking about G2x.

Why don't LG just stop messing around
Remove all of the LG bloat from the O2x, Give it Vanilla Android like the G2x and give us the Update
What's the betting most of the hold up is them customising it with all of the rubbush most people remove again after rooting the handset

I don't believe so.
There are still some real bugs for LG to sort out in the hardware interface. That is obvious from the leaked gingerbread for O2X that is now available from Paul O'Brien at Modaco. I am running that ROM right now and can say that Paul has done a great job to get it to a stage where we can use it as our everyday ROM, and a fast one at that. Some minor bugs remain that he can't fix just yet. For example, zooming while video recording with the camera will result in a FC or reboot. Apart from this, all other major functionality is working. Most impressive is its speed and stability which is absolutely rock solid.
If you are impatient for official gingerbread to arrive, why not give Paul's GR1 ROM a try. He has just put up a free pre-bake here.
try pauls GB
been running for a few days now its nice a pre bake also out now battery life as good as b4 but reporting is out mkv play fine also

What's the best ROM that may allow me to still have 3D & will remove potential Bloatware from the phone?
This is my first ROOT, any help or suggestions?
I just need some good ROM suggestions, maybe something that will change the Dock Bar(Bottom of Screen). Or give me a feel like Motoblur.
Just suggest some.
close to stock but without bloatware
definatelly thriller rom
but a slim down rom then you should go with doom slim
i tried both and for now i'm going back to thriller
follow the steps on thriller and you won't go wrong, i didn't!
I am currently on thriller and am using the lunar ui theme, its nice. I haven't had time yet but I was planning on trying doomed froyo slim Becquerel it is the roms with current and up to date devs support, where as gtg is now working with the galaxy s2 so I don't see thriller rom getting much support in the future.
It was a little tough getting the cwm recovery on, but I followed the guide on here and everything is working fine.
I also like the ics theme, I think I'm gonna go back to that theme, but ill probably switch back and forth

Follow the steps. With you saying that I'm lost, and thanks for the recommendation.
Is there steps? If so how 'WOULD' I find them? Sorry, first time ROOTER here.
And where would I place these ROMs? I know there's supposed to be a ROM folder or do I have to make it? I'm just trying to get as much info as possible, please work with me despite my troubles.
Where would I place ROMs? And do any of these ROMs change the Dock at the bottom?

How do I change my UI?
Please don't be frustrated with my questions.
Ok, so I've Backed Up my ROM. But how do I change my UI and what are the choices I've got of ROMs?
This should be moved to the general section as it doesn't have any development involved in it.
Please post questions in the "general" section unless you are actively developing something.

[Q] Newbie questions

I am new to LG Revolution (trying to install custom ROM on sister's phone). I am coming from 2 different Samsung devices.
I have VZ6, 2.2.2, rooted. Windows 7 64
Here are my questions:
1) Thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1121952
CWM download link gave me a "recovery-cwm-pr1.tar.gz", so I extracted it with 7-zip and get a "recovery-cwm-pr1.tar". How do I get the .img file??
2) What exactly is ADB shell? Where do I find instruction on that?
I assumed installation of Revolt 1.5 is straight forward after I get CWM on the phone. I am just having a hard time to follow those instructions on CWM tho.
Heya,
I'm no professional at all of this, but I'd recommend downloading the revotoolkit. i;ve not used it on vz6, but that is how most of us went about getting cwm. believe there is a thread about it in development (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1144951).
hope that helps you
I would get the GB update. Then root with using the post in development by mtmichealson. Then flash Gingervolt.
is the Gingervolt mature?? this is my sister's phone, so I am not going to flash it every week when there is a patch or update... I highly doubt my sister (technologically challenged) will appreciate Gingerbread anyways.
Gingervolt was just released so there will be more releases soon.
If she wouldn't appreciate it just get stock gingerbread on and leave it at that
Edit: not to take anything away from any the developers here don't take it that way please.

Thankfully we have dedicated people here, who get excited about the little breakthroughs on this phone. The phone is great, the hardware is fast and responsive, the programming (from what I hear) is a disaster. All the Roms I have tested have been stableish on this phone, a couple force closes here and there, but nothing too intrusive. Gingerbread is perfect, and the Gingervolt from Mtmichaelson is stellar, no hangups, no force closes yet. I would expect themes to roll out soon, and some more stable Roms. I would assume the dream of CM7 is on the horizon now.
In agreement with Haro's comment, you will find that we will not simply give up on this phone, we have been through too much.
No worries, glad I could help. Props to thecubed for that one of course

I just want a more stable and less problematic os. My gf's Xperia arc with a single core runs better... lol
Many folks have different setups they have reached via trial and error. As per my findings most stable setup is Miui + Owains Tweak Pack.
Miui on its own is a little slow and laggy, with owains tweak pack it gets upto speed and then adds cool things like voodoo sound and google talk video. Currently I am on miui 1.10.28 and I will be upgrading to new miui with new tweak pack next week.
The only issue you will face is the phone will say that you have to turn on data roaming. It shows up as rogers wireless and I have been running it like this for a month and have not incurred any extra charges. So its fine as far as I'm concerned.
This same issue is also in Cyanogenmod (miui uses cyanogenmod code). Cm7 is very good but takes A LOT of tinkering to get to a decent state and also I got horrible battery life with it. Thats why I moved to miui and then discovered this wonderful forum with people like fajarep and higsy and owain94 who are doing custom things for my phone.
Fido has release the GB update through the LG Support Tool.
The only bad thing for me was that the Support Tool can't detect my firmware version after the update. Oh well, I'll deal with that if the roll out the ICS update for us

Not fair. The LG Update tool is not working for me it says I'm at the latest firmware. Im on 2.2.2. I'm on Fido aswell and I can't get it to work. I'm calling Fido on monday I'm so upset. The 2.2.2 is so buggy and has screen unresponsiveness issues. (many froyo roms do)
Same thing here
I am having the same issue. What's the deal here. It says phone is already latest , no need to update. But my firmware is still listed as being 2.2.2 Althugh few months ago when I checked using the tool it said there was an update required and it actually did flash my phone . Afterwards I noticed my " version #" had changed to v21b . However to my dismay, the firmware version remained unchanged at 2.2.2. What's up . Is this what people mean when I read references to " fake gingerbread" In relation to Optimus x2 updates??
Sigh, the crazy part is I recently heard a statement from LG saying that the x2 was one of the phones that has been slated for an ICS 4.0 update! huh? One empty promise at a time please ,LG
Thanks to anyone who can clarify .

I was in the same sinking boat as you are now. I have the O2X while i ot my gf the Xperia. I haven't rooted her phone, but mine was done a day or two after i got it.
I tried using the LG tool to update, and gave up. Way too so for my taste.
So i turned to CM7 and followed it religiously, till i turned pagan to my new lord(till ICS comes out officially), Temasek.
Im currently running Temasek's nightly Kang, 66 i believe. I had tried CM7's #218 nightly, but wasn't crazy about it. Didn't seem as stream lined as Tamasek's.
Just tried the ported version of ICS from Ricardo Cerqueira, very nice introduction. But i myself had too many issues with it, maybe should have done a full wipe, swipe and dump before installing it.
But all in all L1qu1d, don't be scared to root.... you won't regret it.
And good old nightly or kang can work wonders...
I think the only thing that concerns people about rooting is that they may not be able to get the official ICS update WHEN they finally decide to release it. Obviously you can revert/deroot etc and then you should be fine.. but still... lol. nerves.
LOL
i even forgot that there is such thing as lg tool.
