I think the capacitive search button on android is pretty worthless, it doesnt work in all apps, some apps already have a search icon, i think it's redundant, i REALLY hope google gets rid of it in the wave of ice cream sandwich devices
I like the search button. Saves me time to go and search for something. You can also root your phone and install CM7 and have the search issue to do something else. Or if you are on CM7 then push hold the search button and it can be to compose a text or whatever

I never use that or the Search/Voice Search widgets personally. I notice too that Samsung ditched it on the Galaxy S2.
Let's see how it's implemented in ICS when that comes out, with it's 'virtual buttons'. I'm guessing by virtual they just mean context sensitive?
I use it for voice search. Mostly for navigation. I just say "Navigate to Davenport hotel in Spokane, WA" or something and it just pulls the map up and starts telling me where to go. Other than that I don't use it much. I could honestly make a shortcut for it on my home screen though, so getting rid of it wouldn't hurt me much.

Sent From My Fingers To Your Face.....
I trained myself to use it, adding all the apps I needed to it, especially the IMDB app. Now I don't have a search button, cos I use MIUI and it's in the menu instead. (I have a SGS2, so no button - it used to be long-press on the menu button).
I think it's cool, useful for market, music,... I could live without it though

I tried doing a search but I honestly don't know what to enter--tried button layout, android controls, etc--no dice.
On the Touch, it used to be that if you held the camera button down, it took you straight to home. That does not seem to be the case anymore. Can anyone tell me if the Touch has a way to do that now--and if not, how in the world are you getting out of the browser without losing all of your progress? Task Switcher doesn't seem to allow me to choose my home screen, and if I switch to something else and then exit out of that, my browser is waiting for me, like the sneaky bastard it is.

if you aare using an nbh that has the task switcher built into it, then you need to only hold the camera button for a second for home.
tap - back
hold for a sec - home
long hold - task switcher
Awesome! It's going to take some getting used to, but this is a huge help.

Anyone come across any fixes for the fact that (a) there is no LED indicator telling you that you have a message; and (b) there is no pointer/curser/trackball?
I tried NOLED app from the market, but thought it was useless.
NOLED is probably the only "fix" you are going to find for notifications. Android is a touch screen OS, why on earth would you need a pointer?
The trackball on the N1, for instance, is super helpful when typing.

ON topic, mate a lot of keyboard apps for android include a d-pad option which will let you accurately simulate a cursor/trackball.
No LED notifications is a bummer. Strange how people with iphones are not annoyed by that! Something like sms popup can be set to periodically vibrate to remind you etc. No real solution there Im afraid!
There was some dev work on getting the backlight touch buttons to blink but work seems to have hit a dead end.

Heh, its the ideal solution, except theres not really a solution at the moment. Drivers have now been made public (or so Im led to believe). so Im hoping to see it come along side Cyanogen Mod.
Theres an online petiotion that can be signed regarding some dev work for this. At the moment, theres like 350+ signatories....now if everyone chipped in $5 ......
for the D-pad just slide from the "S" sybmbol in the lowwer left of the keyboard to the "sym" key directly next to it (using swype, not the samsung keyboard). a directional pad pops up and it has backspace, backspace by full word, delete, cut, copy, paste, select all, page up, page down, home and end, and a "tab" key, though i don't know if it works like tab of if it is just a large space for starting paragraphs.
samsungs keyboard also has something similar if you hold the key to the numbers/symbols for three seconds.

Wow. Thanks! Dolphin HD, LiveJournal, and text entry don't get along so well for some reason; it never puts the cursor where I tap when I want to go back and edit text. So I'm extremely happy to hear there are arrows on the Swype keyboard! The trackpad and GPS were the only two things I was still missing from my Aria, and you just remedied the former.
Though now I feel silly for not figuring it out myself!
Too be honest I only knew about it from a review I read but they didn't explain how to do it, after a few days of messing with it I found it in the swype tutorials

So I was looking through the HTC One user guide and I happen to stumble across a 'missing your menu button' section. It details how to set your back button as a menu button. Screenshot attached!
Now I tried doing what they said, but there is no option under the menu (as you all are aware).
So I'm thinking HTC had this feature before, but removed it? Or they were thinking ahead while writing the user guide and so will add this functionality in a future update?
I hate the black bar as many of you do, but it didn't stop me from buying this beast of a phone. I've seen stories where people decided not to buy the One because it had a black menu bar (bit over the top in my opinion).
So what do you think guys? Hope for those that don't want to unlock their bootloader? Hope for those that were still undecided?
(If you want the user guide you can find it on the HTC website)

I'm not sure why it isn't an option (yet) for the One. The One X used to have the same black bar, then they added the above option. Maybe they think it would be too much for two buttons to control so much? Shouldn't have removed the third button, HTC!
In complete agreement. The black bar is pathetic in my opinion, but phone was still too cool to resist buying it.
Love the phone but black bar is silly. Hope htc get it sorted for next update.

And if they don't then just pop into the developer threads and choose a Rom that you like. Long-back menu reenabled and the ugly black bar is gone.

That stupid black bar even appears in games. Quite often, there's no menu options in the bar, either.

The option WAS meant to be there, sadly a bug in retail release meant it doesn't appear. They have managed to enable it by renaming the device and it appears back in the menu, so it's clear that it was a bug / oversight that made its way into retail software.
Sadly.... How long it takes HTC to release an update to remedy it is the big question.

I read that too, and I don't get it.
Samsung on their devices, with an actual menu button is non-compliant, yet that goes through.... Official spec calls for the recently used button and it's no where to be found on the ONE...that's non-compliant...
So, they have to remove a feature that buried within the options and off by default due to "compliance"?
I'm going to lean my hopes on HTC just needing to fix it and bring it back... The feature was even in the phone during the announcement events, so it did exist.

Google Standard Compliance is not compulsory, it's just a recommended guideline. Google wouldn't force HTC to stick to it if every other manufacturer isn't.
The code is still there in the Rom. What the retail versions lack is the option in settings (an option that is reenabled in most roms)

From the 4.1 Compliance Definition Document (CDD). Either way of HTC implementing settings is fine with Google. The fact that no other manufacturer with soft or hard navigation keys has ever had to implement an on-screen settings panel should have been a clue. The only thing that would cause a device to fail Google certification would be violating something labled a "MUST" in the CDD. I take it that Google was OK with HTC killing a dedicated home button and replacing it with a double-tap of another key even though the CDD says "MUST make these functions [home, menu, back] available to users at all times" along with "using dedicated keys." It would seem that the death of the home button would be more signifcant to Google than how settings were accessed.

That is obviously very old, as they do NOT want you to have a menu button now.
EDIT: I stand corrected. Very strange they would include talk of a Menu in 4.2 when, as I understand it, they encourage phone mfg's not to have a physical menu button.
The black bar is not HTC's fault, it's the application developers fault, who don't adhere to Google's guidelines.

If a menu button is coded correctly into an app then you won't see the black bar. If the coders can't be arsed adding the button and code to do the job then you get the black bar. HTC adhered to Google guidelines, coders didn't.

Absolutely correct. But when can you do? Some developers don't keep up, some don't even update their apps at all and have moved on to other things. Who can you blame most? Probably Google. Went with one idea, then drastically changed it.
Personally, when I heard they were dropping a button, I was excited thinking that it'd be the end of the pesky "recently used" button. Totally useless to me unless I'm copying from one app to another... otherwise, it's a bad button since it's behavior is not always *known* to me...
I can't recall what I recently used beyond an app or two, and it goes down to about ZERO if I've had the phone asleep for a while. Furthermore, most implementations take longer to *FIND* the app, IF it's in there than it would to just launch it again from a known location.... this is because the position will vary in the screen shown based on HOW recently used it was.
I blame Google. I get wanting to make it "simpler", but I would have kept menu, and dropped recently used.
We have so many confusing things that occur now with Samsung and LG bucking the trend and keeping a menu button, Motorola adding the [ . . . ] to the side of their on-screen controls when not implemented by an app developer... and HTC getting black-barred when an APP is old or hasn't been done correctly.
Seems like a greater mess for the sake of "simplifying" button count.

Okay, so I want to be able to do a couple of things. The first is nagging me, as I'm sure there's a way to do it, the second I'm not so sure about.
1) I want to be able to access the multi-tasking/Recent Apps list from anywhere. My idea is to push and hold Menu to get it to pop up, since Home uses Google Now when it's pushed and held. I know there was a way to do that with the search key back when we had 4 keys using LaunchKey, but I can't find anything to let me assign push/hold functionality to Menu. I'm rooted, so I'm sure there's a way to do this...
2) This I'm not so sure of. Because of the charging port being on the side of the phone, it works best in my car when it's held in a landscape orientation in my windshield-mounted dock. This is great for everything except one thing: the dialer. I know in most AOSP custom ROMs I've used on other phones, the dialer rotates with the phone. Since I've rarely stuck to stock on a phone before, and we're kind of forced to here, is there a way to get the dialer to rotate?
