hey anyone know how to set an MP3 as a ringtone? i put a folder called "Ringtones" on my SD card, but it doesn't seem to pop up under phone ringtones in settings. is there some simple thing i'm missing?
Maybe your placing it wrong. Using Root Explorer, go to System > Media > Audio > Ringtones
and place your .mp3 in that folder, reboot your phone, and the .mp3 should now be an available ringtone.
Alternatively, you can also use an app called Ringdroid.
Hi,
Is there anyone know how to assign tone on the contact?

They made that really easy to find.
</sarcasm>
From the contact, press menu, more, options. Ringtone is in there.

Also, I could not set a mp3 as a ringtone, file size limit. I use mp3 ringtone on the market (first free app after searching "ringtone maker"). Don't know if ringdroid offers this, but with that app I can clip the song to pull out the part I want as the tone. It can set them as ringtone or notification tone.

I figured out how to do custom ringtones but not how to set custom alarms.
How do I put an mp3 file I have to be an alarm? (all the alarms that come on the phone suck and def do not wake me up in the morning).
You need 3rd party software to use MP3s as ringtones.
Im not trying to do ringtones and I already am using mp3s as ringtones without a 3rd party app. Just put the song in the windows/ring/ folder.
Im trying to set a custom alarm.
Try Chronos, PocketAlarm or alarmToday.
All of these allow you to use an MP3 for an alarm, in addition to a variety of other advanced features.

Anything that doesnt cost money?
My bad, I meant alarms like your post wanted. As for cost, I haven't found anything free myself.
Mort Player
You can use Mort Player as Alarm Tool.
I use it too. You can use Mort Player with mp3 and the best function is,
that mort Player can chance the System Loudness to any Volume that you want.
So you can turn Loudness off when you sleep and MortPlayer will turn it on to wake you up in the morning.
And MortPlayer ist free

anyone else on an alarm program I can use that will allow me to play my own tunes. Or at least a way to put my mp3 file in a specific file so that it will show up on the scroll down list.
Make it a WAV file and put it into your /Windows/ dir.
Then go to your alarm app and click the "bell" and you should see your file.
converted it to a wav file. Came out being huge for one song though(32mb). It came up on the list but every time I clicked on it, it went to default. Whats going on.
I suggest you look a bit around in this thread, you'll find a few free ones in here too

Hey, guys. I have a storage card with a folder called "Music" on it. There is all my music. How can I set a .mp3 as ring tone without any software? Kaiser has this option, but it always needs to copy the .mp3 file, that I want as ring tone in the main memory in "My Music". I think there's a registry tweak to do this... does somebody know how?
What I want: on the today screen in Sounds to be able to chose a .mp3 from my storage as ring tone without to copy it to the main memory.
I hope you understand me.. sorry for my terrible English.
Thanks.
I think I have seen this option change in SK Tools
Do it using Audio Manager
Audio Manager has this option to use any song as Ringtone.
It even has a function where you can Select the in-out points for the ringtone in a song.
My son has the captivate and I have the vibrant. One thing he noticed he doesn't have the option to set music as an individual ringtone or alarm like the vibrant has. Is there a setting or app that can fix that for him. I have searched but he doesn't want something like ring
droid to have to add music to his ringtone?

Ring droid is your best bet. I have a good 10 gigs of music on my external and with ring droid I can make any ringtone I want. If you don't want that, there's an app called zedge which you can dl premade ringtones and wallpapers.
Thanks, I will just have him suck it up and use ring droid

To be able to set MP3's as "system ringtones" make a folder on your sdcard and name it "media."
Inside that folder, make another one named "ringtones" and put your MP3's in there. Now when you go to Settings>Sounds>Phone Ringtone your MP3's will now be read as system ringtones.
As for downloading MP3's on your phone, why not use one of the apps in the market to download MP3's ?
Thx guys followed ur advise works ok now

you can use music player to set the mp3 as ringtone.. I don't know about the default music player, I use player pro and it has the option to set mp3 as ringtone
I use the Handcent sms app and you have an option named "ringtone picker ". It works awesome for me.
After installing the app you switch to the ringtone and the system will ask you which app you prefer.
Now you can choose your mp3. Working great for me.
