I recently got a Incredible S and was considering rooting it. So I went through the topics here and people kept mentioning the option you see on the main menu to "install zip from SD Card".
Just to ensure that I knew everything before I went ahead and rooted, I went to the HBoot screen(volume down and power). My phone was locked(S-ON) and on the screen I could not see any option to "install zip from SD Card". Am I missing something? I am posting a picture of my Hboot screen.
Also something I noticed was that the screen would refresh and automatically run a check to see if any images were present on the sd card. Is this normal?
Sorry if this seems like a dumb question but I am confused and just wanted to be sure.
To be able to see that option you require to root, then flash clockwork mod recovery.
Then you will have the modified recovery with that option to flash roms.
1. Root with Revolutionary
2. Flash ClockwordMod Recovery (To find out how to do this go HERE)
Thanks neo, that helps a lot.

Only s-off is gained with revolutionary your going to need to flash SU to gain root
Yes my mistake. Its in the thread on how to flash anyway.

Yea, I just went to the Revolutionary IRC channel and they were quite helpful. The rooting was quick and easy

Hi Markj338,
You installed the ICS-4.0.3 (incredible S)?
What team?
This version you have installed, has any bug?
thanks.
No? What are you talking about?
I downgraded, s-offed, rooted, and installed recovery, then I flashed a few different roms, before flashing trinity sensation XL as my daily rom

Isnt the Su file in your signature for froyo? And isnt 2.3.3 gingerbread? or it works?
Thanks.

The file in the thread that you want is: su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip It works for Eclair, Froyo and Gingerbread.

Great, thanks alot for the help
im also rooting but grj22 build, what do i need to download to my sd before i unlock my boot loader?
To unlock your bootloader, you don't need anything on the sdcard. To continue with rooting, you would need to have a custom recovery on your computer and use fastboot to install it after you unlock it, then flash the zip that was mentioned above (which would need to be on the sdcard) to actually root your phone from the custom recovery.

ok col, now heres the kicker...i flashed recovery-RA-nexus-v2.1.1.img as my recovery , and im pretty sure i put cryogen 7 on the sd so i fudged it up pretty good.whats the best recovery to flash i, if had gingerbread 2.3.4 which came ota au natural? also im finding the su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip file either, anyone have a proper link to it?
If you're going to flash cm7 or ANY pre-rooted rom you do not need to bother with the su.zip. Just flash the rom from custom recovery.
i keep getting the no img wrong img message in fastboot when i try to hboot?
Fastboot is used to flash the custom recovery. The recovery flashes the rom.
I can't understand your post in the first place so I dont know what is your actual issue.
But read the wiki.

Just in case anyone is stuck on an locked unrooted N1 (2.3.6) and has the unfortunate luck of having a broke ass power button.
BTW, standard disclaimers apply. I take no responsibility blah blah blah
1. Root using Revolutionary's zergRush: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1296916
2. Install RomManager and flash CWM Recovery 5.0.2.0
----- Optional -----
3. Boot into CWM Recovery, mount /system and /data
4. Install BlackRose http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1270589 (if your bootloader is unlocked, choose the option for unlocked...this is why we boot into CWM Recovery)
5. Reboot phone, feel free to modify cache partition size, etc using steps on the XDA BlackRose thread
6. Flash CWM Recovery 5.0.2.0 again as it blown away by BlackRose
----- End optional steps -----
7. Follow steps for Methods via Rom Manager: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Nexus_One:_Full_Update_Guide#Method_via_ROM_Manager
Done.
I would recommend clockwork 2.x, and suggest you stay away from clockwork 3.x and higher...

Sorry about that! I had posted it on CM's forum then copied and pasted it over here and did not think to check the links. Post updated
You don't really need to do all those steps. You should be able to do just steps 1,2 and then 7. That's it.

Hmm, I was pretty sure you need to unlock the bootloader to install CM, kernel updates, etc. In this situation with a broke power button, I'd go ahead and flash BlackRose anyways as it may come in handy if they mess something up

Nope, no need to unlock the bootloader to install CM or kernels.
And by the way, Blackrose does not unlock the bootloader...

Oh that's good to know, I'll update the post. Thanks
So I just rooted and flashed cm7 using this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337105
Now, it installed rom manager on my phone and also, this method flashed Revolutionary clockwork mod on my phone. the version is: 4.0.1.4
Now in rom manager, I want to use the back up option etc and for that it says I need to flash clockwork mod.
My question is, would it do any damage if I were to flash clockwork mod from rom manager although I have it installed already?
Thanks in advance

If you update CWM using ROM Manager, it should overwrite the Revolutionary CWM version with the latest version.
Are you sure? I tried it, takes a really long while

I tried doing it. It just hangs. I mean the display doesn't turn on and that's it. I waited for about 5 minutes. Nothing happened. Although when I popped out the battery and put it back in, it worked okay but the version of CWM is the same. The one from Revolutionary as I mentioned above!

Ok then just flash the latest CWM recovery from FASTBOOT USB mode using the command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Also you can just boot into recovery and perform a backup without using ROM Manager.
Thanks a lot man! Really! Couldn't thank you enough. Got it done!
Hi,
I want to flash the Jelly-Bean-Rom of reider on my Nexus one. I am currently running on CM7.2 and have already installed 4ext-Recovery and Blackrose.
Afaikt are there problems with 4ext at the moment when you want to flash custom hboots on your NexusOne. So my question is, is it possible to just install CWM or RA-Recovery on my CM7.2 and flash the needed hboot afterwards? Do I need a special recovery?
I read many manuals how to flash a custom hboot etc. but I wasn't able to find a definitive answer, if I have to install Recovery again after upgrading hboot or not. _And_ if I need a special recovery.
Help is appreciated!

You don't need any special recovery if you flash the partition scheme via fastboot. How this works is explained in the Evervolv Jellybean Thread. Your recovery should be untouched by this procedure. Alternatively you can switch your recovery to use flashable zips from this thread, but it is not necessary.
Run or phone at normal mode. Connect USB to or phone open black rose there are options u can choose pick the one that resizes or hbot.

if you are flashing hboot via fastboot/blackrose then u dont need to change recovery.
if u want to change hboot via recovery(4ext) then follow this post and see if it helps. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30271020&postcount=124
and yes you can change to either cwm or amon n flash those hboots. cos it sometimes doesnt work wid 4ext...

Hello
I finally got bored with my phone and decided to try some custom roms. Im not new to flashing roms but this was my first attempt with the vivid.
I unlocked my bootloader and s-off my phone using the Juopunutbear trick. I updated the hboot and perm-rooted the device. I did this all following the superguide instructions.
This is where I think I messed up. I tried to use the rom manager to back up my phone and install cwm which im thinking i shouldnt have. I installed the app and hit flash clockworkmod recovery. I got confused on what to do after that.
I can boot into the phone fine with no issues but I can not hboot into recovery it just hangs on the htc white screen.
I dont know where to go from here. can i salvage this process or step back in someway? Also did I install cwm or not complete the process or was it already installed as part of the superguide perm root instructions? Im a little confused on the whole recovery part.
Thanks for the help
Either flashimagegui from the themes and apps thread...
Or manually fastboot flash recovery *image name*
I recommend twrp...
Easy way to get it..
Download goomanager from the market... Open... Grant root...
Hit the menu capacitive button... Choose install openrecovery script...
Download it... Trying to flash it with goomanager is broken... Use either method mentioned above

Thanks for the reply. I ended up re-rooting the phone(Step 4 superguide) and that gave me access to the recovery menu again.
Yeah, don't use rom manager it's old and outdated
