I rooted my Nook about 2 1/2 weeks ago running CM7 encore nightly 146; had no issues with the battery whatsoever. All of a sudden no matter what USB cable I use whether its the B&N cable/charger or not, the battery is taking forever to charge. Like this morning at 800am, I used the B&N cable/charger for the Nook and the battery reading as of 12:04am (Thursday) is still only at 61%. I mean come 17 hours to charge a battery and it's still not a 100%!!!
I wiped the battery stats in recovery mode and rebooted it hoping that it would incease the charge but no such luck. FYI, everytime I charged my nook the screen would always stay on and I use it pretty frequently to watch movies, read books, and use the web browser.
As of now, I powered down my nook to see if it would charge without being in sleep mode to see if that was the prob.
I really would appreciate if anyone could help me with my problem! It's very frustrating!
It will charge much faster if you attach the charging cable and then power off the Nook (however mine sometimes will turn back on during this process).
That's a pretty old nightly!
It will only fast charge with the B&N Cable AND B&N Charger. Any other combo will not fast charge, and will charge only at 500mAh vs 1900mAh.
Unless your NC is very loaded, it will charge quite fast on the fast charger, so I suspect you're not charging it with the cable + charger or there is something wrong with one of the two.

Here's a weird one.
I plugged my NC in to charge this morning. It was just fine and then all of a sudden, the green light turned off and now the NC is no longer charging even though the battery is only at 59% .
What gives? Anyone else notice this?

Have not experienced anything like that. If I did though, I would reboot and see if that changes anything.
Good luck.
Try a reboot. I have noticed the last couple of days that my NC charges, but the status on the battery is not updated until a reboot. I have not figured out why this is happening yet. . .
I will try. The thing is, when i connect to the laptop via usb, it no longer recognizes my device as a drive. My macbook says it's drawing too much power and disbles the port. I'm wondering if they're related? I guess the NC charger requires more juice .......

I have two Win7 laptops and one of them no longer recognizes my NC as a drive either. The other one sees it as the Nook Color and as two drives. It's strange. I have not tried to find out why yet as there are only so many issues I can worry about at one time.
You know. . . I have noticed my problem just in thelast three days, and I have not tried it on a USB port in that time. Let us know if a full restart fixes your problem. It does sound a little different from mine.
I had the same problem till I started doing the following:
Make sure Nook is completely powered off.
Plug in USB cable, Nook boots up on it's on.
Turn off WIFI.
Unplug USB from Nook and then plug USB cable back in.
Now: Nook charges correctly in CHARGE mode:
It seems it takes unplugging 2X to get it into charge mode. You will see the light turn amber on the cable and the status of the Nook will be charging. The battery icon will show as well.
Well, that's annoying. Will i have to do that every time?

So rebooted the NC last night and plugged it in to charge. The light was orange and device showed it was charging when i went to bed. I just got up and the light is no longer on and battery only charged to 90% overnight. What gives? Is there somthing faulty?

And i just rebooted again and the NC still not recognizing the charger.

Yet another update --- I finally got the NC to start charging again. Now the light on the cable turned green and the battery is only at 97%. Isn't it supposed to stay orange until the battery is fully charged?
Never had any problem charging mine at all... I plug it in typically towards the end of the second day, or when it gets much below 40%.. I always (intentionally) charge it using the Nook Charger and Nook Cable, any other combo will only charge it slowly, probably around 10%/hr at most IF the NC is standby/screen off.
As for how far it charges until it says it's done... Some Android phones stop showing "charging" at 90% but continue to slowly charge to 100%, some it's higher... And when it hits full it TURNS OFF THE CHARGER until it drops below the threshold again. This is how charging LiIon is done. I personally haven't paid any attention to how the NC charges, as it "just works" for me.
I'm wondering if it's something wrong either with my cable or my actual NC. Ugh. I don't want to return for another unit.
Bump. Anyone else seeing these charging issues? Should I take this back?

Not sure how relevant it is, but "slow charging" will not charge device very quickly, buti does supplement battery life quite nicely. since open wifi is my only internet source atm, I use an fm tranmitter with a usb port to listen to pandora in my car without draining battery at all. actually slowly charges if screen is off.
I'm just trying to figure out if there is something wrong with my NC or it's charger.

Dunno, but I finally broke down and bought a NC yesterday morning.
Had a b!tch of a time inserting the mini-USB cable, which presumably should not be the case. Managed to get it charged. Mine came OOB w/a 98% charge!
Then stupidly I removed the cable, but wanted to sideload a book shortly afterwards via Calibre and again had a b!tch of a time getting the mini-USB cable inserted. (Only mini-USB device that I have, so no other cable to compare with.)
Can't even get it to insert this morning, so I'm giving up for now and back this one goes.
Not real impressed so far with the build quality of a $250 device. Arguably OOB both the Pandigital Novel and Augen Gentouch were better. To make matters worse it doesn't even come close to the gTab's build quality either, which I was expecting it to be closer to.
Funny note in the manual that I noticed while browsing through it(checking to see if they maybe had a sneaky trick/lock to insert/remove mini-USB), and found a line:
"do NOT turn off NC while charging"?!
I usually turn off my devices while charging as they'll charge a bit more quickly, typically...

I would suggest that rather than relying on the battery percentages, start looking at the actual mV readings of the Spare Parts/Battery Information. I say this because I've seen android have fits trying to give accurate battery percentage readings. I'll put mine on the wall charger now and post the max mV level I can reach. Perhaps others can as well?
Ok I just put my NC on charge and the battery was reading 13% and showing a 3601mV reading.
My replacement NC, whose USB/charge cable inserts MUCH more easily that #1's did, came OOB @ 98% too, but #2 took FOREVER to charge to green... touch screen on this one is supersensitive as well... now to check for dead pixels, hot pixels, and chipped screen...
Getting tired of going to B&N, and their CS wasn't exactly wonderful as they were going to try telling me that #1's cable/USB port were fine and dandy until I made him check that the LED wasn't coming on & that the demo unit inserted more readily and further into the socket, just like #2 did which I checked right at the register but didn't linger to check for dead pixels, etc. as I was holding up the checkout line(@ 9a?!).
I went to look at one a few weeks ago too at that same store, and the woman at the Nook kiosk wasn't very interested selling. (She'd rather continue reading her NC than trying to sell one.)
#2 also came upside down in the box, i.e. the tab on the protective plastic to pull out the NC was at the end that doesn't open...
B&N needs some serious QA/CS/sales training... esp. with their crap return policy... well 13d to shake down and see if anything else falls off...
Okay, so here is the story, I am without the OEM Nook charger (cable) and it seems that no other charger will charge it, I splurged on the Nook in the first place therefore not having the funds to buy another cable. So what I am asking, is, does anyone else know anyway to charge it?
I got a generic retractable microUSB cable. Charges fine from a computer (albeit more slowly than with the Nook charger). Interestingly, it charges super-fast when plugged into a powered USB hub.

You can charge from a computer? How? I have battery stats pulled up and I watch it as I plug it in, It mounts, but no charging

It is indeed charging when you have it connected to the computer although the amperage isn't great enough to trigger the Nook into a charging state. Keep it there for an hour or so and you'll notice a difference in the battery level.
I would turn off the auto mount of storage when charging from a computer. I charge my nook using USB every day at the office.

No it doesn't, that's a bug. At least if it's what I've seen.... My NC will sometimes to from say 70% to 100% nearly instantly when plugged into the computer. But it doesn't happen every time.. I haven't tried to figure out what makes it happen, but could be related to repeated plugs of the NC to the computer or something, as I was farking around with disabling/enablng automount when I last noticed it happen.
Later it'll start dropping like crazy and recover the "incorrect" charge status back to normal, like 5% drop in seconds several times in an hour is what I have seen it do in the past.
Okay, so if I leave it plugged into the computer, with auto mounting off, it will charge?

Mine does, I started the day @ 75% a few hours later it was fully charged.
I had same problem, bought nc used and got wrong cable
Used nook wall chager with wrong cable and got " not charging" but i left it overnight, next day it still showed same amount of battery it had night before so i thought it didny charge.
Went to buy nc charher $25!!! Ouch. Plugged it in and battery percentage went from 10% to 99% in 1 second
My theory is that a regular usb does charge it but the nook wont recognize it, but the battery is charged

Well, what you describe is not what I've seen.. What I have seen is that it will charge from ANY source, although it does NOT show it on the status bar or in the Settings, but if you watch the charge percentage (I use Battery Snap) you'll see it charging, assuming there isn't much of a load on the NC. As far as I know, it charges at 500mAh unless it has the NC Cable + Charger plugged in.
What I've also seen is that sometimes the charge jumps to 100% for seemingly no reason when plugged into my PC. Doesn't happen all of the time, but it's not charging fast, and it's not a "recognition" thing, it's completely false. If it jumps from 70% to 100%, it's still only 70% charged. It'll "discharge" really fast later, presumably as the system does whatever it does to determine battery charge (battery voltage etc).
I tried to find similar threads but the closest I found were people having battery charging issues with Phiremod rom and they were advised to clear the battery stats in recovery mode, which I did try but still the NC won't charge.
I haven't actually let it drain to 0(it's currently at 23%) to see if it really isn't charging or if it's a software thing that is not showing the correct battery level.
Has anyone had a similar experience and been able to fix it? Or do you think it's not a matter of the installed rom and rather maybe the NC itself is "bad" and I need to return it?
Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated. Especially since this is my wife's NC and I told her how "cool" this whole rooting, rom'ing thing was and that nothing bad should happen
Most likely it's the NC USB cable. It doesn't have a good design and fails often. I had problem with mine.
DOH!
Wow this is so embarrassing.
After your suggestion, I went to go check my wife's cable and noticed that she had the right cable with the "N" all nice and lit up...to bad she had it in her HTC Inspire plug!!^%$%^! And her Inspire in her NC plug adapter.
Hmmm...now to figure out how to delete this post...don't wanna give Nookie Froyo rom a bad name but insinuating it cause charging problems.
Actually I noticed this about nook. I plug in a general micro-usb cable, the battery % doesn't change at all.
The minute I switch back to the stock NC plug (with the led logo), the battery instantly shows it fully charged.
Does this mean I can only charge using the NC cable?

I believe the NC cable has extra pins that allow it to charge the NC faster. In addition, the NC charger is a 1.9 amp unit whereas most bricks are less.
A regular USB cable will charge your nook if you turn the nook off. It charges much slower though (overnight for a full charge).
I've read a few threads regarding battery life but none seem to address my problem. I have the Galaxy tab running stock honeycomb bone stock got it 3 days ago still got protective tape on it. But the problem I have is I charged it all night while off from 0% to 80% (8 hour period) shouldn't it charge more then that? Also while using it at work on its charging dock plugged in via wall charger (same as when its charging at night) it seems to charge SUPER slow or not at all, it actually drains some times while plugged in. Any ideas?
Try charging it using the charger you got with the tablet, not the charging dock. I don't know exactly about the charging dock, but I know that it takes longer for the tablet to charge on USB.
Hello, I've had my NC for a year this month and never had any major issues. I installed manualnooter 4.6.16a when nook was updated to 1.3.0 some time ago and all was great in the NC world. Recently I noticed that my battery is stuck @ 29% no matter what! I never charge via usb thru the computer always plugged in a wall socket. I dld batt solo widget, and many other battery widgets just to make sure, and of course they all say 29%.
Here's the thing, the n on the cord is green which usually mean its fully charged. I used it til it died, plugged it back in to recharge two days and the % is the same. I went ahead and wiped it, updated it back to 1.3.0 stock and you guessed it, it still says 29%. What do you think the problem is, please help.
The problem may be that your charge cable no longer works with an AC source. I know it sounds far fetched, but mine would not charge above 33% with the cable that came with it, but once I used my cable I use in my car it started charging fast again, and is now charging to 100%.
Download the battery monitor widget and it will tell you if your cable is charging AC or USB.USB charge is very weak vs AC. Try recalibrating your battery either with an app (I use nemas version) or do it under advanced in recovery. Assuming you are rooted.

Assuming he is having the same problem as I did, The nook just stops charging, and will not charge any higher than whatever percentage it stops at. The only thing that worked for me was using a new Nook Color Cable. Just an odd bit of wonkiness.

Also, boot into clockworkmod and clear your battery stats. You're battery should be right around 4200mv fully charged (Spare Parts on CM7 can tell you this). Sounds like you just have an issue where its not recognizing full charged as fully charged.
