[Q] Market 3.1.5 - app visibility - Nook Color General

Hi guys,
I know this has been covered, but the info is rather fragmented and hard to follow for me.
I have a pretty fresh 1.3 rooted with MN (properly and working great).
I have the limited app visibility in Market (version 3.1.5). I have installed LCD Resolution, Root Explorer and LCDDensity. I've tried to tinker with the density in the LCD apps, but it seems my NC is already at 160.
I have looked at my build.prop file and I have the following lines that reference density.
# ro.sf.lcd_density=240
ro.sf.lcd_density.xdpi-169.33333
ro.sf.lcd_density.ydpi-169.33333
I would really like to get my market back so I can use this as a tablet.
Who can help me out with the steps? I'm not a super novice at this, but I'm not an 'expert' by any stretch.
Thanks

I have read numerous posts but have yet to find anyone with a rooted, stock 1.3 with a fully populated Market. At this point, I know of no known fix.
I am hoping that one of the developer types will take this issue on and find the key. My thinking is that now that there is a CM7 fix and fully working market with rooted, stock 1.2, that the answer is out there some where for a stock rooted 1.3.

I don't have a rooted NC but with my CM7 (nb200 or later), it set to 160 dpi by default.
All you have to do is clear Market (v3.1.5) data (not the cache, not the Market Updater) then get back in (sign in and re-accept their term).
That's it.
You should get fully functioning Market (Apps, Books, Games, Movies)

I just finished rooting a coworkers v1.3 Nook and have this same issue. There is about 95% market visibility. I have tried most everything imaginable (build prop edits, lcd density hacks, uninstalling the market update) and can't access that final 5%. This includes things like facebook, twitter and opera or dolphin browser to name a few. For now I have side loaded a few of these but it would be nice to have them in the market. Movies, books etc all show up fine. Its just this handful of apps that are a problem. I do not have this issue on my CM7 or v1.2 setups. Very frustrating.

with the dpi at 160 my market 3.1.5 has been working fine. i can see all apps including facebook, twitter, opera and dolphin. have you try clearing market's data and cache? maybe this will help.

Are you running cm7 or 1.3? I tried clearing data / cache multiple times. I left the dpi at 160 for him. We will see if it populates appropriately over the weekend. I will check it again next week.

Google Reader App on NC (Nookie Froyo)

I recently succeeded in getting my NC to boot NF from emmc successfully. I am having some issues with certain apps. Now I know that NF isn't absolutely 100% perfect yet but any advice on these issues would be appreciated.
1.) Can't install New York Times or CHASE bank apps; I did the modifications to the build.prop file from NookDevs. I can see both but can't install either.
2.) Google Reader App installs and syncs fine but with a few exceptions. It scales the entire screen when I view the categories and the feeds within them but once I go into the article it looks like it goes into compatibility mode with the black borders. I have compatibility mode unchecked and have rebooted quite awhile ago. I cleared the data and uninstalled/reinstalled to no avail.
I'm almost certain that prior to NF while I was just on a Rooted NC everything worked, NYTimes, Reader and so on.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
I have the same google reader issue and I'm running 0.6.6 on emmc.

Did you ever figure out the Chase app on your NC. I get error -17 when I try to install it from the market.

What about for Chase Banking?
Google Reader installed fine.
Interesting, when I tried Google Reader on Autonooted stock, I did not get any black borders. I wonder why the difference.

Different version?
I would love to get an answer on Google Reader app. It is one of my most used because of the instant syncing (I used to use FeedR).
I got a new NC with 1.1 out of the box and rooted, then installed it from the market. Its version 0.9.3.
I'm having this issue with Google Reader as well! When I autonootered, Reader worked fine and scaled to the whole screen. Now that I'm on Nookie Froyo...the initial screens are scaled perfectly, but when I go to read an article, I get huge black borders with the viewable area looking about the size of a small smartphone.
It's driving me nuts, because I really utilize google reader quite a bit!!
I hope someone looks at this soon its driving me nuts also... LoL
I am having the same problem with Google Reader running Phiremod (2.3).
I came across this thread which claims to have fixed the issue on the Folio. I tried flashing the zip on my Nook but it failed every time. The source is included in the thread, so maybe someone who knows this stuff better than I can figure out how to make this work on our nooks.

I found that the issue with Google Reader has to do with LCD density. I have Phiremod 5.3 and the default LCD density setting is 161. Changing it to 160 fixed the problem for me.
I found that I had to modify the build.prop file in order of this to stick.
Search the forums as there are lots of references on how to do this.

Problem with changing the LCD density is that the Market Downloaded apps list often goes blank. Keep the density at 161 and use the free D7 Google Reader client. It is quite nice.
I can confirm that the Google Reader issue is a density setting problem. I changed lcd density from 161 to 160 and it works fine now. This also did not break anything else, not that I have noticed yet anyways. I will post again if I find anything broken.
I used LCDDensity, came preinstalled on Phiremod v5.
--MrAnt--
Just discovered that changing the lcd density setting does indeed break Market. The list of My Apps is blank and I am unable to restore the list, clearing cache and data, unless I revert the density setting to 161.
I guess I have to choose between a working full-screen Reader app or the ability to update my apps
Hopefully there will be a fix for this. I really enjoy reading my news feeds on the Nook, much more pleasant than my phone and more convenient than a computer.
--MrAnt--
Have you tired turning off Compatibility mode in spare parts? It worked for me without having to mess with the density.

I have compatability mode disabled in spare parts already.
Does D7 sync with google reader?

[Q] rooting nc 1.1 using monster root pack 7

i am new to nook color...so i did a lot of reading on this forum...i want to root nc 1.1..which is the best method for rooting nc 1.1
from whatever i have read there is two method one is auto nooter 3 and other is the pre rooted decadence rom..which one should i use..i m tilting more towards pre rooted decedence rom using monster pack .7 .
i also wanted to know if we can root 1.1 using monster pack .7 . it mentions that it is 1.1 compatible but it seems no one has tested it. i m noob to this forum and nc ..so i m sorry if i have offended some one with the above newbie questions..
I just went from ROM 1.1 stock to 1.1 rooted with Monster Pack .7. Works like a charm. Thanks IOMonster!
I just used it on a stock 1.1 Nook Color and it worked great, also installed Gapps just fine and logged into my google account fine. Everything is working on my Nook except the B&N 'Shop' from the main B&N home menu. It starts to load then goes black and nothing is there.
fpga_guy is also having the same problem...is the problem related to monster pack 7 or its a general problem???

I'm not sure, lotta stuff to read on this forum. But I ended up just putting it back to a stock 1.0.1 Nook like it was when I bought it. So it's all back to normal now. It might have something to do with B&N registration, although mine was registered before I rooted and flashed, which is how it's supposed be.
Your registration with B&N may have gotten stale. You can post in the Monster Root Pack thread in devl forum and see what folks are saying.

I rooted with MRP, and also had the broken shop issue. As an experiment, last night I rerooted with autonooter - directly over the already done root, no format, no wipe. (I have a backup in case doing this is dumb, natch.)
Now the shop works.
However, the original MRP device supported the Nook standalone app and the autonooted device (this one, and one which was only autonooted, never MRP'ed) do not support the Nook standalone app.
I strongly prefer the real app. The night mode is actually black, not grey, it more consistently remembers where I left off reading, and deleting a book from the bloody library actually works in the real app. It does not work in the stock library app, and the library app frequently forgets where I was reading when I get back into it.
I'll probably restore from backup this evening - there's too much very good stuff in the real nook app to give up. It is very difficult to get the shop to let you search in that app, but recalibrating the touchscreen makes it more likely that you'll be able to. Since search on the device is so weak in the shop, I'm ready to give it up for the better night mode, the better remembering where I left off, and the vastly better file curation.

I used MRP because I couldn't get autonooter to work, and so I'm in the no-shop state. I can download free apps (angry birds, of course), although I haven't tried to buy any.
Also, gmail has trouble with my email; I get lots of instances when it goes back to the index after displaying a message for a little while, and for some messages this happens before displaying anything. Is this a FC?
Softkeys also seems to be in a somewhat confused state; I don't quite understand what it's trying to do (well, I know it's creating onscreen buttons or remapping vol+- to replace the hard buttons on most phones, but that's my limit). I often get a popup saying that it couldn't do the task as su; is there some softkeys or su doc I haven't found yet?
However, I'm confused. The autonooter image only contains /boot; where does everything else come from? Does it download everything else from the PC, and that's why you have to plug into a PC?
Hmm.. I don't have SDK/ADK installed (and so no adb), is this why autonooter failed for me?
Please bear with me, I'm a long-time command-line unix/linux user, new to android. I've been using the MRP SD card to install zips, so if there's a flashable zip that fixes this, or an image that I can raid (sudo mount -o loop ...), I'm all set. If it's an adb hack, I'm out of luck for a while.
OK, I'll stop typing now...
Thanks!
Dennis

Softkeys is much better now; I like it a lot more. I managed to get it to pop up a root attempt and allowed it, so it works.
Still no joy on the shop front; the non-gmail email app might be better, at least for me, but I do wish that it had collapsible folders. My folder tree is > 20 years old and rather, umm, organic.
Cheers!

I realized last night that whenever I try to visit an https: website (gmail, google/contacts, www.401k.com) the browser FCs on me.
Oddly enough, accessing gmail works just fine, so security bits appear to be different and only one of them is broken.
Does this happen to others?
Dennis
Autonooter 3.0 is great. It produces a Nook Color with full B&N functionality (the stock reader, including magazines and read-to-me kids books, the in-store browsing) that you can also install apps from the Android Market (and Amazon app store) on.
For me, right now, this is "good enough." When B&N releases its update, I'm going to wait for a pre-rooted package here before upgrading.
The reason I probably won't do anything crazy (like go full CM7) is that I'll probably buy a purpose built Honeycomb tablet for that once the market matures and prices come down.

I was in the same state. Following a suggestion from another thread <http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005975>, I applied autonooter-3.0.0 to my MRP'd NC 1.1.0, and all is well! AFAICT, you can ignore the instructions for after the reboot, it didn't act like a fresh NC at all.
BTW, not only did the shop FC, the browser couldn't load any https: pages, either. Are you in this situation?
Good luck!

Rooted stock nook color 1.3 - can't install few apps from the market

Hi,
I have rooted a Nook Color 1.3 using Manual Rooter. Everything is working fine but I can't get some applications via the Android Market.
I have tried multiple things, from changing the LCD density settings to changing the fingerprint in the build.props (this actually has improved things, I can now access many more apps including some of my previously purchased apps).
Other apps such as facebook or opentable are still missing. Trying to install these from the web market I get the error message that the device is not compatible.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

It is likely you are having the same market issues that others are having on cm7. The workaround is to set LCD Density to 160 (either by modifying build.prop or using an LCD Density app from the Market) and then clearing the data for the market app. I'm not sure how to clear the market data in BN1.3 (usually this is done in Settings/Applications, but the B&N settings is truncated so I'm not sure that option will be available. YOu might try the Nook Tools/Tweaks settings app). Titanium or Astro may also allow you to clear market data.
For me on cm7, I have found that I need to clear market data regularly to keep market working well.

Uninstall the market updater app and then revert to the old market.
This sounds like the same limited market visibility problem encountered when first manually nootering v1.2. Try following the instructions in the Manual Nooter thread under "limited market visibility" in the first post.
Briefly, it requires you to force stop the market, clear the market cache and then clear data from the google framework services and stop it as well. You then try opening the market again which will lead to an error, this is supposed to happen, and then reboot. At least with v1.2, this allowed visibility of all of the apps.
To what should I change the fingerprint setting? I've tried everything on this page (except the fingerprint setting) and it still doesn't work. I even changed the model info in build.prop to HTC Vision...
What else can I try?

This worked for me on a Manualnooter 4.6.16 stock Nook Color 1.3. I tried both the LCD density and Market rollback before this fix and neither worked. I would be interested if this fix will work for the New Market that is contained in Manualnooter 4.6.16 as I applied the above noted fix to the old Market to get it to show everything.
Just recently I got automatically Market update and now it won't install some apps which I can see but cannot install due to "compatibility". Not sure why, but I believe density is set to 160 or 161 (CM7 7.0.2) and it still gives this... I am not bothered by this but it sucks they do not have sections where tablets can go and simply install, etc
Can't Install Apps
I was able to get the Market to work with these steps:
1.) Set your LCD Density to 240. Reboot Tablet.
2.) Go to Manage Applications.
3.) Find Market. Force Close Market.
4.) Clear all data.
5.) Uninstall Updates.
6.) Launch Market.
The market will not re-install the Update when your LCD Density is set to 240. However when the tablet is rebooted and the LCD Density resets, the Market app will update and you'll have to start over.
This work around isn't for someone who needs to be installing a new app each day, but helps for you to load up the first go around.

DERP, sorry wrong thread

Is there a fix for the new market yet?

I'm running CM7 nightlies on my Nook, just wondering what I need to do in order to get the market work the way it's supposed to. (Hidden download buttons, can't update apps, etc)
set lcd density to 160 in build.prop
force stop market, clear cache
brings back functionality for ~ 1 day, clearing the cache again get's you another day, etc.

I've failed at this multiple times
Using ES File Explorer and giving it permissions, I can edit but not save the build.prop file.
Don't know if this matters, but I have CM7 on the sd card (no eMMC install).
Also, I suspect the /system folder is read only?
I thought the solution is
a. Stop (rename or uninstall) the MarketUpdater
b. Clear cache / data on the Market then uninstall "Updates"
Step b. above is a roll-back (old) version of Market (2.6.x.x?)
Step a. above is stopping the Auto Update of the Market.
There's some report of modifying the density to 160 in the build.prop.
you can also use a LCD density changer app from the market. the biggest problem is that none of the fixes are long term. you can change the lcd to 160dpi and clear cache but in a day or two you're back to where you started. the only long term fix for now is to go back to the old market and freeze or delete the updater. or at least until the old market becomes incompatible.
I know this sucks. why are we being CENSORED by google
I uninstalled market update then cleared cache and data, then in root explorer I deleted market updater.apk and now I have old market working just as it should. Thanks for the tip boxcar!
What am I doing wrong? I have cm7 on sandisk sd. Installed the latest nightly and installed gapp file for cm7. Installed lcd density changer app and set to 160. Force stopped market and deleted cache, but still not working right.
I don't understand how to set the market back to the old style.

to get the old market back all you have to do is...
1) in settings / applications / manage applications / press all scroll down to market and uninstall updates.
2) with titanium you can freeze the market updater or with some kind of file manager app like astro or root explorer you can delete the updater. if you delete the updater and wish to get it back all you have to do is re-flash gapps
3) now you should have the old market back
4) enjoy
If I set my density to 160 or 240, then force stop & clear data in Market app (after reboot, before connecting to Market), the new market works fine for me. Works fine for many days at 240, seems to work for only a day or so at 160.
I change the density in build.prop using Root Explorer, so it stays that way every time I reboot. Running 177 from sd card.
If I also uninstall updates when I do the above, it reverts to the old market, and that works fine for a day or less.
If Google was really trying to prevent the Nook Colors from accessing the Market, they could probably figure out a more effective way to do it. I think this idea is paranoia, and the cause is just something weird in the rom's details. I could be wrong, though.

How do you set the density to 160 or 240 or whatever? I downloaded the ROM toolbox, but I cannot find under which menu this lcd setting is?
Everybody is talking about setting the LCD density as if it is already taught at the kindergarden.

Ha, that was my reaction too. I had to search a lot to find the procedure. The techies seem to assume that we all know this stuff, and have probably gotten tired of explaining it to every noob (understandable).
You can use the LCDDensity app, it's the easy way. You set the new density, it reboots into what you just set. However, reboots after that seem to go back to the default of 161.
I use the Root Explorer app, which allows you to go into build.prop and change the LCD density there.
Open Root Explorer.
Open 'system'.
At the top you need to change r/o, read only, to r/w, read/write, by pressing the box that says 'Mount R/W'. It'll change to 'Mount R/O'.
Long press 'build.prop'. Choose 'Open in Text Editor'
Scroll to line that says qemu.sf.lcd_density=161
Change 161 to 160 or 240, or whatever
Press menu>Save & Exit
Press 'Mount R/O' to change back to read only.
Voila.
I've had LCD Density at 240 for about 2 weeks now. No problems here with the market. =) Sometimes the apps dont show up in the list but you can still update them by manually searching, which subsequently adds the app to the list.
It's large, but surprisingly, I actually like the largeness.

It's large, but surprisingly, I actually like the largeness.

The market seems to differentiate between tablet offerings at 160 and phone offerings at 240. In fact, on a freshly refreshed market at 160, you can find a category titled "editors picks for tablets" at the top. No such heading exists when the market is refreshed at 240. But even then, all previously downloaded apps can still be updated.
This is probably why you can't find some apps, but can still update them.
This seemed to work for me in Terminal Emulator:

2 pm disable com.android.vending.updater
If by chance things go wrong, you can just enable updating.

This does work pretty well, thanks

Also the blade buddy app in the market has a tool to change LCD density and it holds after reboots.

Awesome! Doing that and then uninstalling the updates brought the old market back. Quick question, is this change persistant across reboots?

I'm running CM7 nightlies on my Nook, just wondering what I need to do in order to get the market work the way it's supposed to. (Hidden download buttons, can't update apps, etc)

I had my Nook Color with 1.2 and 1.3 manually nooted go into endless boot cycles after a while because of the Market automatic updates.
I found that the automatic updates in Market screw up the latest manual nooter. Here's how I fixed the problem.
*IMPORTANT* You have to do this before the Market first updates itself resulting in an endless boot cycle. This procedure will unfortunately also stop automatic updates to the Market. However, it also stops the Nook Color going into the endless boot cycle after the first Market update.
1. Wipe the device (8 failed boots) and clean the memory (press and hold n while booting and keeping the power key depressed).
2. Complete the B&N registration process.
3. Upgrade to the latest B&N firmware (I tried 1.2 manually)
4. Use CMW and manual nooter by following this http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...1054027&page=1 to root your Nook Color.
5. Use the Market to download Terminal Emulator (see https://market.android.com/details?i...roidterm&hl=en for details)

So you guys are telling me that you all will have to use the OLD MARKET for the rest of your life?
You guys not gonna tell me that you are waiting for the fix, aren't you?

Cannot install certain apps (Dolphin Browser) by hook or crook on Froyo Rooted Nook

Noob, and sorry for what must surely be a previously-resolved issue, but I cannot for the life of me get the Dolphin Browser installed in my v1.3 ROM-rooted color nook.
I am neither incompetent nor lazy, although I may be stupid. I was having a merry old time with auto-nooted eclair color nook, when I decided to update to Froyo, following the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054027
Following everything to the letter, I quickly had a shiny new Nook Color (after polishing with Windex) that had a prettier intro screen and most of the prior functionality.
Re-installing my favorite apps, I notice that Dolphin browser no longer appears in marketplace as an available app. This is not my only Android device, and from the Android marketplace website, I can see both the Dolphin Mini and HD browsers as available and "installed" on my Droid inc2, but not available for anything else (nook).
"No problem," I think, "I'll just download the apk and side-load it". Problem: cannot install non-marketplace apps error comes up... Okay... Install LCD Resolution and re-set to 160, clicking the default checkbox, retry, re-boot, retry... pull up NookColor Tools and make sure the "allow non-marketplace apps" checkbox is ticked, reboot, retry...Uninstall Market updater and wipe data and cache for Maket... No dice. Cannot see in Marketplace, cannot install apk. Re-boot, wipe data, un-install, re-install, and re-check and un-check and re-boot in every sequence I can think of.
Google the hell out of it (lots of re-boots and ticking/un-ticking checkboxes). Find tons of threads related to 1.2/eclair versions or problems of no working marketplace, and other unrelated stuff.
some facts:
- Android Marketplace is working but appears to be an older version(?) (the green-and-white list-format, not the gray and black graphical format I get on my phone). However, it's still the same version that got me Dolphin just fine on the same hardware when it was eclair, Dolphin just no longer shows up as an available app.....
- In NookColor Tools, the "allow non-market apps" checkbox is now unlabeled, there is just an unnamed checkbox that, in my old install, used to be labeled "Allow non-market apps" or some such. I'm assuming this is a formatting/display issue. No other menu option offers anything similar.
I'd really appreciate if anyone could even just verify the two above points: if you tell me that your Froyo rooted Nook shows the newer marketplace or some such, or shows Dolphin browser as an available app, then that confirms that I have done something wrong or that my nook is weird, or something.
Aggressive googling seems to turn up some people with similar problems, getting broken advice from people running eclair nooks. Lots of blind-leading-the-stupid, with people on different OS telling you to go "settings" (which on my rooted Froyo CN only opens the stock Barnes and Noble settings).
I'm not averse to re-rooting or to PC-based or command-line-type side-loading. I'm mostly just looking for someone to confirm that they are running Dolphin on a Froyo Nook, and ideally some indication of how you got it working.
Please don't tell me to try Opera or Firefox or that the stock browser is better or just as good... I have every available browser installed on multiple devices, and none but Dolphin work properly for certain things.
Thanks in advance for any help, and sorry again if I am missing something stupid.
