I was trying to determine if there are any problems associated with backing up one Nook and restoring this backup to another Nook. My wife has a rooted, stock 1.3 and I have a rooted, stock 1.1. I would like to upgrade to rooted 1.3 without returning to stock, unrooting, rerooting, etc.
Basically, I was going to use CWM on an SD card to backup my wife's rooted, stock 1.3 and then restore this backup to my rooted, stock 1.1. I am assuming that serial numbers, MAC addresses, etc. are hard coded and unaffected. We share a B&N registration ID so that should not be an issue.
I would appreciated any thoughts and guidance from anyone that might have done this. Here are a few specific questions:
1. Would it be necessary to wipe /system, /data, and cache?
2. Is the /media partition affected or does this information remain intact.
Thanks, in advance, for any help on this.

I'm currently running a rooted nook color stock, and I also have another NC running froyo. I am selling the stock NC but am unsure how to go about it. If I do a factory reset, does that retain root and wipe out all my data? Is there a way to just remove my gmail so that all they have to do is use theirs when they get it? Or is there some other way of selling, retaining root but without my info on it? I guess my question is how do I sell a rooted NC?
Appreciate the help.
I'm not sure what the official consensus on this matter but I would imagine all you would need to do is de-register the device and factory reset. I doubt you would need to format /system via the 8 interrupted boot/adb method, if someone with more experience on this could inform US that would be killer!

Thanks for the reply. I'm still unsure about this. If anyone else would pipe in I'd be eternally grateful. Just want to make sure my personal info is gone, and that the NC will still be rooted if I erase and deregister
i would just wipe the emmc and flash the stock rom with a CWM sd card
As grasstrout said (great name btw), just wipe the system and flash the stock rom. This will make the device as if you'd never even turned it on.
I have a question, I was wondering if this is possible. OK, I have been on CM7 for a while now and now I'm looking into going back to stock now there is a way to run CM7 from an SD card, I would like to go that route from now on if possible. OK, little back ground first. I was on GMPower's Auto-Nooter 3.0 running 1.1 software version with CWR 3.0.0.5. When I made the choose to move to CM7, I made a full nanodroid backup first before I made any changes, I also did a test and did a restore to make sure it worked fine. Then I installed CM 7 with 3.0.1.0 and have been running fine (of course with the known issues that CM7 has). Now with the question, If I boot with my Monster RootPack Clockwork Recovery 3.0.0.5 SD since it's CMR 3.0.05, can I restore my nanodroid backup and it restore fine since it should restore all my emmc partitions? I know I would first wipe the cache and then format the /system and /data partitions then do the restore. With all that being said, or would I have to completely return my Nook back to stock and redo everything? If this has been answer please don't shot me and sorry for the bad grammar (I'm no English manger)...LOL
Thanks,
DG
It's possible - I just did the exact same thing myself. So, it can be accomplished. that being said - it took me a while to get it back. I consider myself fairly well versed in most things android (have a 1st gen droid phone for a while now - been through many custom roms), and on my Nook went from stock to rooted stock to cm7. I got to a point where I just wanted to start over fresh, so looked into getting back to a rooted stock version. From what I have found, a lot of what you will go through depends on how deeply you've delved into cm7 (mainly do you have clockwordmod installed on the internal memory, etc. My situation was running cm7 from internal, but was still using clockwork from an SD.
Long story short - my method went something like this (after many trials and errors):
- used the SD I installed CM7 with since it would boot into clockwork.
- formatted system and data
- applied stock 101 zip I had copied to the SD
- had some issues booting correctly (not sure if you will) but ended up holding power and 'n' for about 10 seconds to get to the factory restore and after that completed, my nook booted as it should into a fresh install
-re-rooted using autonooter.
I had attempted the "interrupt power 8x" trick but got nowhere with it since it was a huge pain in the butt to time it correctly. There are lots of great guides around, you just have to find the correct one for your particular situation and may have to use one to get to point A, then another to get to point B.
Hope my ramblings help - bottom line is yes, it's possible
Anyone that know a backup app/program that can backup all my data so that I can root my N1 2.3.4?
Not really up to the whole factory reset and do all customizing again... :/
I can backup my SD easy with USB cable but the internal memory is a different story.
Thanks
Maybe downgrade?
Hello XDA-Community!
I got the same problem as TheWierd - I am running stock 2.3.4 on N1 with no root and locked bootloader. I would like to change to a custom rom to have more fun (and mainly because i am running out of internal memory, so a forced move2SD would be cool). But i dont want to lose some app data like savegames, settings etc.
Is there a way to have a good backup before flashing the new rom? so getting root without unlocking the bootloader and therefore wiping the whole device? (e.g. is it possible to downgrade to 2.3.3 and use gingerbreak oder superoneclick?)
Thanks for any help!
PS: I don't want to hijack your thread, TheWierd, just wanted to state, that you're not the only one how's got that problem

No problem mate, would think that more got this problem but no real info about it.
Find Sh**loads of threads with the answer "Titan Backup" etc. replies...
Like they don't know that you need root to do that...
Hehe - ya, it's like an infinite loop - you want to root your phone, but in order to root it, you must unlock and therefore wipe it, before you can wipe it you want to backup the data, in order to backup you need to root your phone, ... etc.
I hope anyone can help here
MyBackup Pro is about as good as you are going to get. You can add a few SMS backup apps and stuff also, but you can't backup everything without root...
Hi again folks!
thanks for the info, danger-rat - I thought as much!
So i just did it yesterday. Flashed CM7 and I'm very happy with it! Ya, I lost some savegames (Stupid Zombies, Alchemy, etc.) but I also could backup some other data and settings.
It was really easy to flash it. Well, so I'm out here!
Kind regards and thanks
My GT-I9000 got stuck in a loop, where the screen wouldn't turn on, but I could tell it was doing something because the phone was getting warmer. I couldn't get it to turn off properly either. In desperation after leaving it for ages, I pulled the battery.
Upon next booting up the phone, it "welcomed" me to my new phone, and asked me which country I was from etc. I was also met with about 20 Force Close messages.
All my contacts are gone and other data is lost. Texts are still there.
I am assuming that my data partition is corrupted, does that sound correct?
If I try to make a change to an app's settings, they mostly aren't retained on the next visit. This is true even of new apps I've tried installing. Sadly the various backups I thought I had turned out weren't as complete as I thought either.
I'm assuming the lost items are completely gone (unless anyone knows methods of recovery on data partition?)
I think I need to run an fsck / chkdsk type utility for RFS on the data partition, and maybe the others too (I'm hoping it is just file system corruption, rather than hardware failing!). I'm also assuming I would then be best wiping the partitions completely and installing a new ROM. I'm currently still back on JPY anyway, so keen to move on to something newer anyway (probably JW4). The phone is not currently rooted and not sure if it is rootable in it's current state.
So my questions:
Anyone know a way to recover anything from Data partiton in this scenario?
Anyone know which utility I can use to repair the partition file system?
Then presumably I want to do a full wipe in some way (or maybe a full zero-ing?) and then repartition, before installing a new ROM.
Any help and suggestions welcome.
Thanks
Mike
I found that there is a "fsck_msdos" tweaked by Samsung, but there appears to be mixed opinions about whether it helps or makes things worse. Any views on this?
I'm assuming I would need to be rooted to be able to run fsck_msdos on my data partition, is this correct? If so, what is the best way to root JPY?
Also, which partition sounds like the culprit:- data? dbdata? other?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Can anyone help? Any suggestions?
Thanks
Mike
Firstly, what rom are you currently using?
Secondly, does it matter if you loose all existing data?
I'm still on JPY.
I don't want to lose anything else (having already lost contacts etc), but that is just making sure I have suitable backups before I do anything.
Hello,
I apologize that this is my first post, but I recently flashed cm-11-20140224-NIGHTLY-ovation onto my Nook HD+ and noticed that some of my apps didn't transfer over. I tried downloading them and seeing if Google would restore them to how I had them before, but Google isn't loading my apps like they were.
I wanted to restore to my point and root my Nook HD+ so that I can use TitaniumBackup and back up the ones that aren't transferring over properly then restore them once I flash back to CM11. Is there a single method to this? I know when I hit the reboot option in CWM (flash_recovery_ovation_CWM_6.0.4.5b_internal) it asks me if I want to root and I was wondering if I should just go with that or if that risks a brick (though I haven't seen much bricking in this forum). I also took a look at leapinlar's post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613) and saw that they have a root there that I can use.
Is one better than the other? Would I need to root again once I re-flash CM11? Is there an alternative which allows me to back up my things apps with their current data without rooting? I tried Helium but it didn't seem to work for me.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
CyanogenMod ROMs are already rooted. You do not need to root CyanogenMod. The rooting is only for the stock ROM I believe.
As for your backup, I'm not entirely sure. I've never attempted to use TitaniumBackup to restore after upgrading the Android version. Apologies.
You can't/shouldn't use Titanium backup to restore apps/settings when you update to Android 4.4+.
