Increase Font Without Root? - Motorola Droid Bionic

Title pretty much says it all. Is there a way to increase the font size without rooting the device? Spare parts doesn't seem to stick, font size reverts after a few minutes.
If I have to root the device and I change the density to 230 will it stick If I unroot the device?

It should stick, also I think you can use the developer tools and push the changes without root

For some reason its not sticking but I'm going to give developer tools a shot.

I think the issue with spare parts was due compatibility mode. Unchecked it and all seems OK now. Font sizes are sticking.

lrs421, how well did the procedure work?
lrs421,
I am a noop...just signed up and watched the video. I read your post and have the same issue. I am coming from Blackberry to Droid Bionic. Already called to return phone because of small fonts. CAn you explain the procedure to increase fonts? And, comment on how well the results were?
Thanks,
Brad

Hi and welcome to XDA. It didn't really work that well, it's a resolution thing. You can change the DPI by rooting the phone but it screws up the market. You kinda just get used to the fonts. Some apps allow you to increase the text size which helps dramatically. All the apps I frequent (Dolphin Browser, Text Messages, GMAIL and Tapatalk) allow you to increase font sizes in the menu so I just forgot about it. I love my Bionic otherwise. I'm leaving it stock with Launcher Pro Plus and enjoying it more and more everyday.

Increase in Texting app and Contacts would suffice
Thanks for the feedback. If I could get an Increase in Texting app and Contacts would suffice. What Text message app do you use? do you know of a contact app whereby I can increase font size?

I use the stock text app. Open a text message, press the menu button and select more. There you will have an option to resize.

"Paid" apps are supposed to verify you own them before they work right? I have seen before where if I remove my gmail account from my tablet then some apps break and won't run properly. With that said, I paid for sketchbook pro and can't re-download it to my Xoom because 3.2.2 changed the screen density. I'm looking for a way to get the app again without going through "unkown" sources. The screen density change has caused the market to drop it entirely off the list when browsing from my Xoom and from the web I can't push it back to the Xoom.
I did download a "copy" but when I run it it says cracked by so and so and I really don't trust cracked software so I uninstalled it.
Are you able to download it to your XOOM from the online browser market? If you have a VZW XOOM, it should still work. If not, you may have to download it to your phone and pull the APK and sideload it on your XOOM (your phone would have to be rooted to do that.)
Also, for future reference, Titanium Backup is your friend.

Trying to push it to the Xoom = your device is incompatible.
Autodesk has for some reason locked this app into only working on a certain screen density. It will not download to my Nexus One either.
And your tip is well noted, but who would have thought sending their Xoom off to get upgraded to 4G would come back a different screen density... and on top of that who knew it would make so many apps incompatible LOL.
Worst comes to worst... I can just wait. Autodesk will fix the issue on their own sooner or later but I thought I'd ask around.
I have a question to those with SB Pro too. How are your drawings on the Xoom? I can draw well with pencil and paper but the touch response on the xoom kills me. I can hardly get a line that's not all squiggly. This is making me consider a lenovo with a digitiser for my next tab.

I wonder why in the world they would change the screen density. Is the change obvious? Does it look better, or worse?
Another thing you can try, if you're XOOM is rooted, is to change the screen density manually (or use the screen density changer app in the market) to something that the app will recognize, then change it back to stock after downloading the app and see if it works.

This. I am curious to know what density they changed it to. Was it only from sending it in for the 4G upgrade? I have an unrooted Xoom WiFi I am pretty sure stock density is 180. What did the stock density change to?

Read Out of Text Messages

So I had my bionic in my car mount and received a text message. The phone then preceded to read it to me.
I haven't seen this anywhere but is there a way to gain this functionality when walking around?

I can imagine....
I went through the settings and there isn't anything there to configure when its available.
The Casio G-Zone Commando has a "read out" app that will read any unread messages when you press the app icon. I have looked for the app but can't find it. If I'm able to find a Commando ROM ans extract the apk, do you thing it would work? Hmm, I guess I know my evening.
I have never liked things like handsent or third party apps that do what I already have a core app to do. It just seems like bloat
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
I agree but they work well as a temp fix until you find the solution
I think this would be a pretty cool thing if I could get it to work.
It didn't take me long to find a commando system dump, but a couple of hours later I am no closer to finding the apk.
I would GREATLY appreciate any help. On the commando there is an app called "read out" and it has the same icon as the text messaging app. If you touch the icon it will read your unread messages to you.
I figure (total guess) that it is interfacing with the picotts.apk like the bionic does in car mode. The bionic has the picotts.apk already, so I want to try installing the read out thing to see of it works.
Does anyone know what the read out apk is named? Or if this would work?

Give me a link to what you are working with and I will take a look, but I am no dev so no promises
Also this seems to work well https://market.android.com/details?id=de.exesmobile.messagereader

I saw there were a couple of apps, what I liked about this was it's almost more of a widget. Nothing opens you touch it and it reads. The down side to an app is if I have to open an app to use it I might at well read the message myself.
I appreciate the help. I know I probably sound like an idiot
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
So I was able to check out a Commando and the "read out" is a 1x1 widget, not an app. The commando is the only phone I have seen this on.
Is there a chance that the pico apk is different on the commando and has that widget? If so can I install that version and have it work?
I like the widget because I don't want every message read out. I don't see the point in a seperate messaging app, because I could just open and read the message. But the widget I could find useful if I'm on Bluetooth or busy with something and don't want to stop and read. Just tap the screen and continue doing what I'm doing!

Sucks. Any devs got some free time, and want to work on something a little unique?

Check out VLingo in the Market. It has a setting that will read your SMS messages for you. There is even a handy widget to turn it on and off.
I like Car Dock Home v3 for full customizing and use Tasker for everything. It would be trivial to create a task that says to read an incoming text out loud based on docking status or location or time or whatever, and even automatically respond.

Liberty 3 Rc1 has been released for the Bionic.

This is not my work, and all credit goes to devs. Liberty RC1. Really awesome.
Remember I, your mom, your priest, or your dog are not responsible for what you do to your phone. Only you are. Happy flashing.

Use the app mybackup root. You can back up all apps and there data and restore them all at one time. Also backups SMS mms and so forth. Works much better than titanium. I use both in tandum. So backup your apps. Boot cwm. Then backup entire rom...flash liberty restore apps. Cake! Restore backup if you don't like current rom.

Liberty is so worth any trouble, although flashing it really is easy. It is super. It was always my favorite on my x, and I love on my bionic. The crazy thing is, it's just an RC. Great work to the devs. Be sure to show them some love.

Liberty 3 rc1 no landscape in gallery?
I might be overlooking something, but i cant seem to get my videos or pictures in the gallery to go landscape when i view them...anyone else have that problem?
Hmmm.
Yea, mine doesn't do it either. It is a release candidate, so could be something to get fixed in future. Still, wicked rom.

I agree with Tivo, you are special. Do you adjust something for that to work?

Which two apps would you miss most?

I'm always looking to find new, wonderful apps, so, out of all the apps on your Bionic (which you've added from the market, not stock), which would you miss the most if they were to suddenly disappear from the Android world, and why?
For me:
1) FBReader (as I love reading Ebooks, and the Bionic screen is good enough to make reading on it worthwhile)
2) JuiceDefender Ultimate (WiFi control and nearly 2x battery life improvement? Yes, please)
hmm
friendcaster cause the fb app sucks
and
xda cause i love reading up on the new gadgets n mods

They were kicked off the market cuz of some copywrite violation.

One app I miss is SNESOID. It was removed a while back and some other developers have been taking it's spot, and in some cases posting the exact same app. I still have the app, but it's a shame that the original SNES emulator for android is no longer up.

Notification toggle switch

I'm looking for a notification bar toggle switch to flash to stock like the custom roms have on them. I know there are some apps that do this but they aren't quite the same as many of them launch a popup. I mainly need to add wifi, GPS, and Bluetooth toggles to the notification bar for fast access (only turn GPS on when in car dock and need the toggle to turn it on once in car mode since I use an alternative car app and can't go into Android options)
Any help would be appreciated

Head over to my droid world. Look up bionic mods.
DroidJunk has 1 there the only requirement is deodexed. Even easier google DroidJunk
Thank you. I like the stock, but can't live.without the toggles (GPS and wifi). More specifically, I should say that I like Motorola's email and all in one messaging apps. Other than those and zumocast, I don't particularly care. Unfortunately 2 out of the 3 only work with stock from my previous experiences.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I have tryed all of the email apps pay and free. Have never found an better one than the Moto's email and all in one messaging apps. Also, it is the only one that allows custom fonts for signature. I also love zumocast and use it daily.
You should know, you can use any of the old droid th3ory blury roms. They let you keep the Moto email and aio messaging.
I use [k]in3tx as I don't particularly care the stock colors and theme.
The only other email app I like is the default Gmail app. Not all my email addresses are Gmail so I also need the Motorola email app.

I have 2 other questions (probably wouldn't even ask if the bionic community wasn't so disorganized) . Do you know where I can find a deodexed.zip that is for the 902 update? The one I found was for an earlier build. Also, do the roms you mentioned work with 902?

I found the 902 deodex so I don't need that answered. Apparently, I'm going to have to stop looking at xda as the first source for Android development (kind of strange for me since on my old phones, this was the main spot to go to find anything)
