I don't think this question has been asked, so I'll ask it.
I have a Captivate that I dearly love, but has been replaced by my Infuse 4G. I have a young son who loves it as well, but I don't have a SIM card in the phone and I certainly don't want him making emergency calls by accident. He does like to play games and stuff like that on the phone, however.
I realize that I won't be able to use a normal data connection, but since it's on WiFi and never leaves the house anyway, that's irrelevant to me. My question is this -- is there anyway to not only disable, but remove completely the phone features on the Captivate, basically turning it into an Android-version iPod?
Thanks to anyone who knows (or will answer).
There was a dev who did it a while back, it was similar to the android version of the Samsung galaxy player. Check around in the dev section if its not there try making a post in Q&A thread someone will get back to you pretty fast (they always do for me).

I'm going to experiment with it now that I have a basic framework. I (and my son) are fans of MIUI, so I was hoping to stick with that if possible. Going to try it tonight and see how it goes.
Thanks for the reply.

You are the one who is interested in this. Make a Backup, install your theme, if it works great, if not, just restore to your back-up. There is no fear of bricking your device. Dont be expecting people to just install things to see if they work for you. This is a community everyone should contribute!
Thats awsome logic, however i have no knowledge of how to even make a backup, much less get a successful one. Ill be the first to admit, too, that im not very android savvy yet when it comes to the mod scene, and if something messes up, the forums would explode with me asking questions on how to fix my phone. Im also not going to loose my job because I have to explain to my boss that I bricked my phone because I wanted to make it look different. Im not a developer, im a user, and i cant afford to blindly walk in to something without knowing side effects.

You dont need to be a developer to do this. I recommend you check out the PMC (Pimp My Captivate) guide posted in the general sections for the captivate. Also, if your new to the mod world and xda in general, I will be the first to say welcome. We have a great community of moders, users, and developers here who are extremely helpful. Most questions probably have been asked, and answered already. Use the Forums search feature to see if it has been, or if you want to learn how to do something search it, there are a TON of guides on the forums about moding and developing!
For making a backup you can do this, by going to the Android Development Section, and Reading the ClockworkMod Custom Recovery
its simple and easy for making sure you never brick your phone!
got me curios ill do it. reply when i get home.....
ok it installs fine over TwLauncher but not launcherPro. now you just have to find some themes that are made for 2.1 eclair rom. most of what i found was for CyanogenMod. don't know anything about this mod but i hope this helps some one. i now think this is of intrust to me too. so if we could get a captivate tut for this thing (past instillation) like actual installing of themes that would be great thanks.
Yea metamorph works fine some times it bugged out with ADW when I first start up the phone but other than that metamorph works great. I'm using the evo blackbar mod.

I second that. I installed it over Touchwiz and LauncerPro and I didn't see one change that it made. The only metamorph change that has actually ever worked for me is the Evo black bar mod.
I heard of D'Odexing your phone......I know it's like a mirror file for lack of a better description needed to run things but I have heard combing the two makes for better perfrormance. If this is true.....how does it work and is there a "one click" way to do it......have had great success rooting and doing other things without using my PC. Thanks in advance.
Find a rom with de-odexed apks.
It's not really worth doing it yourself.

There's a deodexed rom in here somewhere.... I know a few of us were trying to port the Vibrant one over to the Captivate, but the creator of the Vibrant one did it for the Captivate. Just search in the Development section.

Google is a wonderful tool - it saves one from many misconceptions:
From Droid Forum
De-odex: Apk files have respective odexes that devs use to supposedly save space. Deodexing means you convert it back to a .dex file and put it back inside the apk. This allows you to easily replace files (not having to worry about odexes), but the main point was to deodex services.jar so that you can change all text to different colors (such as the clock color to white) and to deodex services.jar, you need to deodex everything.
In simple terms de-odexing lets you easily theme things - I have never seen it mentioned in discussions on performance.

It was difficult to get barcode scanner to read that.
EDIT: I don't know if you created that or not, but I totally just stole it and made it my profile picture on facebook (I didn't have one before). I'll have to look for an app that makes QR codes, that could be a lot of fun!
QuickMark from the Market makes QR codes.
Ok. So as of now I have put about 19 straight hours of work into porting this thing over.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836721&page=27
Of the necessary edits, I have all but one single smali completely finished. Im hoping to get this working before i pass out...literally
Thanks to JsiChiSurf for putting this together, the amount of work that went into was MASSIVE and you should all buy him a beer for it. Hes been extremely helpful as I waded though the (no exaggeration) thousands of lines of code he modified.
Also I wanna say thanks to Lou for browsing the thread when I visited his profile page or i wouldnt have noticed it last night.
As of now theres nothing to see, nothing to show you guys, but rest assured, its getting there. this is a HUGE mod, itll take some time. Look for it in my rom that ill be releasing in a week or so.

the issue wasnt actually apktool. looks like jsichisurf didnt have the extended battery mod (1-100%) on his base rom, so the ids from the new images needed for his mod conflict with the pre existing ones from the battery. im trying to find a way to set new ids for them all :/
got all three files to compile, just pushed them to my phone, rebooting now. hopefully i got this successfully ported to the inc framework!
well, if anyone interested in my progress, i almost have t successfully ported over. the framework-res and framework.jar files install without a hitch. the problem is the StatusBarService.smali in services.jar all the other ones ive been able to "port" over, but i havent been able to get it to work with that one, it gets JUST before the final boot and then starts to loop. you know the little vibrate your phone gives right before it goes from the boot animation to the homescreen? it gets that far. im close.
i figure once i get it working ill turn this int to official thread for the mod. wish me luck
Good luck! Looking forward to this. Thanks for all your hard work.

Ultimate Droid ROM has something similar to this. If you're having problems perhaps look at his code and see how he did it? I don't really know anything about this stuff so i apologize if that sounds dumb

Chances are its STOLEN...but no being serious, Ultimate Droid is based on the Cyanogenmod's main code base and is another AOSP (built from google's source) rom. As the OP stated, it took so long because he basically had to decompile the already built sense rom, then write what cyanogenmod already had done for the cyanogenmod toggle widgets into that new decompiled code.

Hello everybody ...
Cud someone please give me a stepwise breakdown on if/how I could get gtalk to have a black theme
(or give me a link to a black gtalk apk that I could use to replace the stock one ) ?
I did search before posting this thread.. and found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821214
but that OP's just stating tht the gtalk app inside another ROM is black in color.
I'm sure this has been asked / done before, and if it has, please don't hammer me...
It's just that I am new to android, and some of the google results i got for 'black gtalk app' said some scary sounding things like deodexed (?)
And - I haven't rooted my Nexus S yet (yes, i know.. i'm a bit scared still.. )
Help please?
All you had to do is go to the second page.
On the second page of that thread posted by Jack_R1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821214&page=2
(Unsure if it works on Gingerbread)
And you'll most likely need Root for this to work since google talk is a .apk within /system/app/
/system/app/ cannot be modified unless you're rooted.
Rooting is relatively simple on Nexus S, don't be scared

Haha okay. But if you don't want to wait for your "friend" to do it for you, here's a guide here to get you started towards rooting.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545
It's relatively simple
Yes- thanx again! I've read through those a few times and all the positive responses from 'first timers' have been tempting me a lot.
I'm actually waiting for the phone to launch officially in Dubai (rumored to happen in the week after next), and then I think I'll become a bit more brave to fiddle with it..
but if i muster enough courage before that, I'll definitely follow that guide ..
(psst: please be on standby with some emergency XDA paramedics, in case you hear me yelping, after a not so successful rooting attempt )

I'm inclined to think it'll be the Super Clear LCD one .. because the Dubai/UAE market seems to be like a Singapore-market follower .. and the SLCD version has just been announced there..
The SAMOLED is partly why I'm happy that I went through some bit of trouble (and a LOT of worrying) to get my NexS delivered safely from Austin..
But boy am I in love with it!
I dont think anyone's been able to pry it out of my hands since it landed (touchwood)
And, like you said... I'm sure the i9023 would get rooted soon enough by folks here
[maybe Google could just officially link to the XDA as their main 'user support forum' .. ]
I was able to push the gtalk and the google voice to the Nexus S. I have it installed on the nightly cm7 #26. The google voice is working but the gtalk is failing to connect to the server.
i was able to install but it hangs on a black screen where my contacts should be but nothing displays. theres also the refresh circle in the top right that keeps going. then if i selct anything via menu button push and go back it force closes on me.
Can someone tell me why is it marked as SOLVED when it does not work on the nexus S? I want this feature badly, if anyone has any idea pls share.

I have the at&t version, i537 and back in the 4.2.2 days some of us used the darkblue themed apps from the international version. I was wondering if someone with the international version would be willing to upload the SecPhone, SecContacts_OSup, and SecMms apk's, with appropriate odex files from priv-app? Yes .Im at work so didnt do that much but when i get home to my computer im going to see what i can do.I tried 2 things but mms kept crashing.Ill figure it out or just theme myself dark.I just need some time at my computer to do it.As soon as i do it ill post here. The only thing that im not sure of is if it will work on odex rom.You might have to deodex the stock rom first. It also will be if your on 4.4.2 also so hopefully your on that.
If you google how to deoxed kitkat rom there are alot of tutorials on it.It was very easy.A little long but easy.
So I found dark dialers and mms that work but you cant send pictures in text message. If I can figure out ill post where I got them. IF not I'll figure out how to theme myself.
Edit so ive been playing around with themeing mms myself for past 2 hours.I went to recompile and got a error. So its going to be trial and error.I have a busy weekend coming up so not sure how much time ill have.Ill keep you posted though.Im not giving up till its themed.
So ive been playing around all day and found some themed mms but everyone I put on wont let you send pictures. If I have some time tonight im going to try to theme myself again. If you dont mind it not sending pictures I can post the hyperdrive ones.If you do mind it I need some more time.

You only can leave stock one on if you change name. There both the same name.So I found a stock mms that you can theme yourself within the app.Give me a little while ill post screenshots of everything. Are you rooted and did you deoxed your rom? Are you using stock rom? If you didnt deoxed your apps I think youll keep getting force closings after changing phone, contacts, and mms.I tried to change those when I was odex and thats what happened.I just stepped on a giant nail and I cant walk so my plans arent happening now. I'm going to play around with some things and let me see if I can fix. I'll pay screenshots also. Please answer questions so I know what you have. Thanks
