Streak 7 "read only" problem - Dell Streak 7

Ok I'm trying to compile a list of people that are effected by this problem. Please post in here if your streak has fallen victim to this and you still have it. After we get a decent amount a people I'll try and find a commonality between us and hopefully find the root of the problem.

Sorry, I just missed out. I had to send my Streak 7 to Dell for repair... just got it back last Friday. It has been working great so far.

so all the reading on how many people have had this issue nobody else has one on hand?

Im one of the poor shmuck with read only issue. But I was able to send it to dell, got it replaced. Funny because, I had rooted the crap out of it and installed custom ROMs, and still got it replaced.

Had the same issue, tablet was rooted, couldn't restore to factory settings, called dell and got it fixed,
Sent from my Dell Streak 7 using XDA App

I was going to start a thread too. I also got a new one back from Dell, but am still intrigued as to what causes the read only thing. Only thing I suspect in my case, was maybe plugging the streak into the dock, while the dock was connected to my already running computer. Maybe the slight "make-break" connections from wiggling the thing around on the connector, caused some kind of malfunction? I also still suspect some kind of virus from who knows where. Or maybe it is just a faulty bunch of memory chips that just went wacko. But I am very curious as to the cause.

That's the greatest part about completely bricking a device ... they can't tell the difference when they "fix" it they overwrite everything.

I'm not sure it may not even be this "read only" problem that we are calling it. I found another thread in another Tablet's area that he was getting this problem due to the wrong bootloader. Maybe there is a certain batch which is slightly different in design.
I have a corporate test device so sending it in to be serviced is not an option. Though I have a full electronics lab with a JTAG machine so if I have to I can crack this thing open but the machine is no good without software. We do have 2 working streak 7's I'd be willing to read the software from but don't want to open them up yet.

add mine to your list.
dell refuse to repair mine because I bought it from ebay and the machine wasnt registered under my name and the person I bought it from does not reply to any of my emails.

That is odd. I thought I had a problem with the screen, and the Dell rep offered to have the device repaired. I'm the second owner. However this was a rep in the US. I also spoke with a rep (I presume in India), who would not give me the time of day unless I could provide the original owner details and transfer ownership. I got the details, but haven't had a chance to call back.
I gave dell a piece of my mind when they sent the satisfaction survey! If a device has not been reported stolen, then they should support it during the warranty period. Plus, I told them that I won't buy, or recommend to buy through my consulting, any Dell product ever again, because the S7 4G is a DELL product, not T-Mobile, and they were not updating it to HC.

For anyone stuck on a read only device, if you try to fac reset, are you using the stock recovery for the installed rom? (This only applies to devices stuck in read only mode with stock roms, it does not apply to Honeystreak R2-R6)

I heard that this issue could be caused by a bad SU app. Any of you get a force close when you open SU?

On HC apparently fac resetting depends on the recovery to do the actual work, unlike the s5 where it does it on it's own.
Wondering for anyone that tried to fac reset on stock HC with CWM it would fail since CWM cant fac reset properly, much less accept the commands from the bootloader in that manner.

What happens if you try and go into fastboot mode?
Does nothing happen/it goes into APX mode anyway?

everytime I try to restore from nandroid or do anything it keep coming back
error formating system partition and same thing as data.
Tried NVFLASH and same thing nothing happen.
Dell just refuse to repair the device and the seller from ebay does not want to give me the info that Dell needed/ transfer ownership.

What rom was installed? Have you tried installing the stock recovery and fac resetting and seeing what happens?

its Stock rom Froyo and both system and sdcard partition becomes read only

The something happened to mine when I let the battery run down to 0%(of course I didn't noticed it happened until it was too late) it got really hot then it shut off, after charging it for a little while, I turned it back on and I had a notification about my internal sd card being damaged, that was the only time I ever saw that notification, I couldn't restore it, I tried everyway possible and no luck

New Nexus Not Working

Hello,
I bought a Nexus one and as I don't live in a country that sells it my cousin brought it to me.
The device doesn't work and self Reboots giving me 20 seconds of use.
Tryed working with/without a sim,
Did a Factory Reset,
Formated the Sd-Card on my Pc,
and still in the same spot.
any ideas on what else to try before giving up?
anyone had this problem and fixed it?
My phone is not ROOTed and is on Version 1 of 2.1
didn't have enough time to get other info like Baseband and stuff.
I'm not willing to root the phone.
** If i send it back it will make the phone very expensive as i will have to pay costums fee when they mail it back to me
Thanks in advance!
Sounds like a DOA. Really bad luck.
If you send it back you should not pay duty to get it back usually, unless you live in a very tax hungry country! Between US and CAN you would not get duty.
Beside try speaking with cust support, DOA are usually well handled by company and so far HTC seem to be handling repair quite well as per the few post about broken screen I have seen.
Did you try running the phone WITHOUT an SD card ? good luck!

If the boots, has never been rooted (boot unlock), no immediate physical damage, and has no signs of liquid damage or tampering (check void sticker).... it's likely just a software issue. Reload original firmware, or load a new firmware... Don't give up, sounds like the phone is still okay.

So it seems.
Where are you from, Krypton1984 ?
Looks like some rogue app is loading at boot, causing reset. Possibly corrupt ROM image - but not sure. Might be software, might be hardware. But here's one thing to try:
If you're on a T-Mobile-compatible phone (900/1700/2100), do yourself a favor and flash stock Froyo. No need to root for that. The guide is in the sticky thread. In case of corrupted ROM image it'll do the trick.
I think you should factory reset it. Maybe even download the official 2.1 rom and install it. See if it fixes it.
Try a battery trade in first. Believe it or not, my first N1 seemed dead, and support gave me a swap for a new unit. When the new unit came in, it was still "dead" with the battery that originally shipped with the device. A new battery is what caused my N1 to finally come to life. The batteries that ship with N1's have QC issues, because I was one of many to report a DOA battery in the Google support forums.
its brand new,
I didn't pay customs on the way in because my cousin brought it to me, so if i send it back i will and it makes the phone very expensive.
what if when i try to change firmware the phone reboots again without finishing?
i dont want to brick the phone.

Well booting to the bootloader will answer the hardware software question.
1. Turn off the phone.
2. Now press (and hold) the Trackball and turn on the phone.
Once you're in the loader let it sit for a while. If it stays up it's a software problem and a new ROM should sort it out. If it reboots while in the bootloader it sounds like a DOA phone.
Good luck.
You can also try a full factory reset through the bootloader. Search for the instructions as i do not know them off the top of my head

i am having a similar issue. The phone reboots randomly and gets stuck at the static X logo screen. i have to remove the battery and let it be aside for at least 10 minutes before i am able to get the phone up and running again.
i tried updating to froyo. it installed but then froze up again on reboot. i did the battery thing and then started it up, went on fine..froyo had been successfully installed, but my random reboot problem STILL DID NOT GO AWAY..
can this be sorted by installing the original rom image?? or do i have to go in for a swap?!?
i don't want to swap coz they send out refurbished devices,,but its the last option...

You'll probably need to swap based on what you're saying. I, though, actually think Refurbished devices are just as good or even better than new. Think about it, if you keep getting dust under the screen maybe a refurbished phone will already have the fix? For that scenario it works out.

I really think this is a bad RAM issue.
I had this happen to my Nexus (ATT). It was prior to flashing froyo. I tried everything, flashing back to stock (including radio), cyan's latest, Paul's (stock) Froyo (with and without radio). Same result. Seemingly random reboots.
I thought initially that it was a software issue - It would not reboot while in fastboot/Amon's Recovery. But having tried every software combination, I've concluded that it MUST be hardware, unless I'm missing something big.
The phone, for the most part, would be fine as long as I DON'T TOUCH IT. It would stay idle for a long period of time (24hrs+), then I would use it Everything from web browsing to downloading apps to making calls, and it would reboot. It's frustrating because it seems that it's rebooting for no reason except that I'm touching it.
Sent in for a replacement, it arrives today. Hopefully it will not suffer this problem.
After talking with HTC they told me i need to swap the phone.
Because i'm out of america i need to send it to someone in the US amd then they send him the new divice after he sends my old one,
I am not satisfide with google's (first guy I talked with) and HTC because none of whome understand the severity and the hard feeling of getting a BRAND NEW IN BOX paper-weight. nothing about we'll compensate you or nada.
For me it tells me the brand is not strong enough to manage an outer state service and i wouldn't recomend them for countries that they don't cell it for.
If you where born in a HTC GOOGLE compatible country enjoy!
As i'm am probably less lucky and still in 2010 nationality counts

Returning a bricked phone

So, I have successfully bricked my phone (not by choice). I am a long time WinMo user and I have never even come close to bricking a phone. Today was exactly one week from when I bought my first android phone and I bricked it.(not blaming android, I love android)
I have tried EVERYTHING, to no avail.
My phone is on the phone++!++computer screen.
So, first thing tomorrow morning, I am headed to the AT&T store for replacement (I will act dumb and get the phone).
My questions are -
1.Will my information (contacts, emails, etc.) on the phone be checked or in any way violated?
2.If they do find out that I had rooted the phone, after I have already walked out of the store, can they do anything about it?
1: Yes, the contacts and all other data on the phone itself is still there, and will all still be there when Samsung / AT&T *un-bricks* the phone.
2: They "could", but I am not knowledgable enough to know if they "will".
Or, save yourself the hassle, and the negative moral karma, and read here:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
I've intentionally (with much failure), tried to "break" the phone so that I'd know how to fix it.
The above linked post will not only recover you from your "phone++!++computer" issue, but actually works so far as the dreaded "orange hex dump".

I have tried everything. I don't want to return this phone, but there is no option left.
None of the methods work and I am pretty experienced in this stuff. So, its not that I am messing up on the methods, its just that there was a batch of phones that had the key combos disabled.
Once you get the new phone there is nothing they can do because they have already agreed to replace it. All they do with it is send it off to be refurbished and it is completely wiped clean. I agree with the others that you have not tried *everything* because I have yet to read a post on any forum about a legitimate bricking of this phone.

I can tell you that by flashing ONLY the pit file in odin another user and myself were able to succesfully make the phone unresponsive to all buttons, all methods and all pulls of the battery. it literally turned into a brick...then again i would call this an illegitimate method after realized how simple it is now. as long as i can get power to the phone thou i have to agree ive been able to save it every time now

Seriously?
I was up for six hours last night trying to fix the damn thing. I don't want to replace the phone just because I want to beat the system. I have never ran into problems when I am modding. I always figure it out, but when the phone is absolutely unresponsive to all keys, what am I going to do?
Anyways, this thread can be closed now.
That same screen (http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/8420/hum1e0.jpg) happened to me yesterday. I thought I had tried all of the key combos but I missed one.

I hope if you have not tried that yet, that it will work for you and save you the hassle of going to ATT.

I tried that too, nothing. I got it exchanged. No hassle.
AT&T store rep just said the phone will be factory reset and there is nothing to it.
Anyway thanks for the help folks, really appreciate it.
Lets hope, I don't bust this one because the phone I just got is also impervious to key combos. I tried getting into recovery (just for the heck of it), it didnt work with the keys, had to do it with "adb reboot recovery".

Stuck at "Samsung Galaxy" boot screen, cant get into bootloader, computer wont detect
Hey everyone this has been a huge hassle for me for the last few days and was hoping someone could help me. I have had to resort to using my HTC Legend...which I love but it doesnt have what I need.
I was in recovery the other day trying to load a custom rom through the CWM and I went through and accidentally hit "format system". I couldn't cancel the process so I knew something bad was going to happen....I reboot the phone and for the last 3 days I have had it plugged into the Usb charger with no luck of booting, it has been stuck at the "Samsung Galaxy S 19000M" boot screen and no further. I took the battery out and tried rebooting it after a few minutes. No luck with this either, still stuck at the Samsung screen. I CAN get into "DOWNLOAD MODE" but I CAN NOT get into recovery/bootloader (hold volume up/home button/power button).
I have put it into download mode and and plugged it into the computer (I am running Windows 7 64-bit) and it will not detect it. I have all of the correct drivers, I know this as I have a friend who owns the exact same phone and my computer detects it just fine. Odin nor ADB will detect that there is anything AT ALL plugged into the computer. It does not even come up as, "android device", or "storage", there is nothing, nota, it is as if the phone isn't even plugged in. It will not detect in "download mode" nor while its stuck at the "Samsung Galaxy S" screen, and yes I have tried a different USB cable, and still nothing..
I am quite capable with electronics but I cannot find anything on the internet as of what to do. Is there anything that I could load on an external SD card that would force the phone to flash a ROM with new kernal and modem? I think the phone is empty that is why it is not booting, as if there is nothing to load on the phone. Is there anything at all that anyone can think of??? I am completely stuck. I wanted this phone to last until the Samsung Galaxy S 2 was released here lol.
I'm with Virgin Mobile Canada. Thanks!

How can I flash any firmware if my PC will not detect the phone? When I plug the phone in there is nothing. Odin doesn't detect the phone, Keis doesn't detect the phone, ADB does not detect the phone, and I just tried Heindall, and it does not detect the phone..... Maybe the actual hardware for the USB plug in is faulty in its self, in which case I am screwed.

I have tried, uninstall-re install of kies, run odin as admin, alternate usb port, anddd I tried plugging it into my laptop...no luck...this absolutely driving me nuts because I know the phone cant be bricked, if I can get into download mode I SHOULD be fine but for some strange reason the phone seems to be undetectable...ahhhhhhhhhhhh if only there was just some way to access the internal storage or a program that would force a flash through an external SD....
I am going to try loading Ubuntu on my computer on one of my HDD and see if it will detect the phone. I am assuming this is my last option and I have high hopes as Ubuntu detects almost anything...I will update...if it doesnt work I might be looking into taking apart the phone its self and intalling a new USB plug in on the phone motherboard...
im not sure of any other steps
last resort.... have you tried another USB cable ? like your friends cable that he uses for his phone ?
EDIT: if i was you i WOULD NOT take the phone apart.... if you do and it does not work, your warranty will be void,
at least if you cant get it working you can send it off for repair and blame kies, you will have a good chance of getting it fixed by samsung than you would yourself

I dont know if it has been opened already by someone else. I bought the phone for $180 CAD from a sort of "2nd turn" site. As in it was being sold as is. The phone problem reported by them was that the USB connectivity was not working. When I originally got the phone from them everything was working correctly, except the USB connectivity like it stated. It came ROOTED and loaded with the leaked version of Froyo before it was out so I automatically assumed that was causing the USB problems. I got around to changing the ROM with a reported working USB using CWM. But, still no luck with USB connectivity. I just dealt with the problem and flashed everything through CWM. Which led me to this...ugh
Is there supposed to be a warranty seal behind the battery cover? Over the screws like there usually is? Cause I see nothing..
thats not good news.
there is no warranty sticker, but samsung could find out if the phone has been opened.
It depends on the actual repair guy, to be honest, samsung will have 100's of phones to repair daily, the majority just get passed on - flashed - wiped - boxed and sent back to the owner.
however if some (P)Rick is having a bad day and wants to find out why the phone is in for repair, and he finds out its been opened up, or its had custom firmware, then he can refuse to fix the phone or send it back to you with a bill included lol.
so you have to have a good excuse incase the worst happens.
if you dont fancy your chances and you feel capable of replacing the USB yourself then hey go for it !!

Well thank you for all the help. I am going to try installing Ubuntu first and see what happens, I have never had any driver issues with that OS EVER so if its detectable, Ubuntu will be the one to detect it. If that doesn't work I might take my chances and send it in. And if like you said that one person decides to screw me over, they at least have to send it back to me, in which case I will just open it myself and change the USB plug in like I said. (which might not even be the problem...)
Is there anyway to tell on the out side without opening it if it has indeed been opened before???
erm..... i dont think so, but i dont know what measures samsung have took to find this out.
if it was me the obvious things i would look for is, damaged screw heads and scratches down the sides - where the casing has been prised open. other than that i would not know what to look for
either way, i hope u get it fixed

Well I sent my phone in to Samsung last week and I just got it back today! I opened it up and I guess the problem with the phone was pretty bad lol they just gave me a new phone, I was thinking it was refurbed but it said right on the repair receipt "condition=NEW" I am extremely happy.
That aside, do you know if you can use the SGS II if it is unlocked in Canada?

HELP!!! Confused!!

So a few days ago I posted this thread
Hi all! I bought a Streak 7 almost a month ago now and about 2 weeks ago it stopped charging so I had to send it to Dell to get repaired and yesterday I got my device back and there was a note in the box saying it had been repaired. When I turned the Streak 7 on it had about 67% battery left so I figured that I would go ahead and plug it in so that it would be charged all of the way and guess what... The device would not charge again. I called Dell back to see what I could do now. The guy stated he would send me a different charger and USB cable and I told him I had already been sent a new charger and he than says he needs to talk to his supervisor and puts me on hold. He comes back and says he has been told to send me a new Streak 7 and it should fix the problem. Let's hope that it does or I will not buy another Dell Tablet..
Well now I have an update on the case... I was sent a brand new device, still in the original Streak box and I pulled it out of the box and let it charge all the way just like it said, turned the device on and there was loaded it with a few apps and at this point it was working just fine like a new device should. Turned it off and went somewhere and got back and guess what... It started acting up on me.
I wet and tried listening to some music I had on the SD Card and there was no sound so I thought the volume may be turned down or something so I tried turning it up and got no beeping from the tab indicating the volume was changing so I backed out of the music app and tried something else with sound and still had no luck. I did a factory reset of the device thinking that may fix the issue! Nope! Still had the same issue plus a few more! The device came on and would stay on for at least 5 minutes and reboot. I than gave up and called Dell once again and I was told that they needed to send my device for repair once again!
The last time they took it in for repair it came back to me UNREPAIRED!
Any Ideas of what to do now?
Thanks
Tanner
Well if you wanna tinker with it yourself to see if there is something wrong with programming, you can go to the DELL Wiki and download the update.pkg that matches your baseband that shows up in ABOUT in the settings menu. Place it on the root of your SD card and in recovery choose update and let it do it's magic. It will perform a factory reset on its own and anything that may be out of sync it will rewrite and replace. If after that you still have issues, then your problem is hardware related and you have no choice but to send it in to DELL

Help ds7 stopped woring

everthing stock.
2.2.2, wifi version
i cant delete any apps. i tired deleting apps & nothing. I also tried moving them to sd and den formatting SD and same thing. nothing gets deleted. Also formated internal storage and nothing gets deleted. After turning on & off tablet i am able to use it a couple mins then i get "sorry....something something...please try again" and the have to tap on "force quit"
When i select to turn on wifi it just stays light green doesnt turn bright. when i go to settings for wifi. i get "error" on it.
1) did a hard reset. vol + & power button, then selected (1), everthing still the same. notin gets deleted
2) soft reset privacy >> factory reset
3) also tried going into safe mode. power on and waited for 2nd dell logo and press & hold 'settings button'' til safe mode show up. but only for about 1-2 secs and then it jus it virbates and goes back to the 1st logo keeps doing this til i let go. which then im able to see 'safe mode'' words. but then screen turns off and turns on without safe words on it.
what can i do?

I had to send mine to Dell for repairs because it was in read-only mode. Does anybody know how it goes into this mode? Is it just a random event, or does it go into this mode after certain events take place? It sure seems like this happens to the Streak 7 far to often.
what i would like to no dose this just happen to peoples sk7 with clockwork recovery installed or without

if its in read-only mode i have to send it dell to get it to work again or is it possible to fix it myself? Well recently i didnt do anything to it. the most recent thing i did was download some apps but that was about 2 weeks ago (maybe a lil less). those apps were from pocketlengends, where u get free platinum in the game if you download those apps. but tablet worked fine after i installed them.
Could someone with a bricked dell try to run this fsck_msdos -y /dev/block/mmcblk3p3 with adb

Once you tried the factory reset from within Android (in the settings menu) you went into Read Only... its a known issue....
The ONLY thing you can do is send it to DELL for repair

As it happens, I used the power on sequence to reset the next time. Anyway it is a mysterious thing.
since the tablet works for a lil it what if the notification for the honeycomb updates shows up? will upgrading get it out of read only mode?
It would be hard for me to believe that the update to Honeycomb would fix that. BUT I would not rule it out, it's a very interesting theory, but I wouldn't get my hopes up seeing as not even the NVFlash method will bring the Streak out of Read Only mode, nor the NVFlash method to put Honeycomb on it will revive it, but there is always the chance the Honeycomb update would address the issue, I mean it would actually benefit DELL so they wouldn't have so many being sent back, but big companies don't always do what's best for them, much less the consumer. BUT keep your fingers crossed, although sending it off to DELL you would have it back in 14 days, I understand the Honeycomb package rolls out the 7th of October but that remains to be seen
