Anyone got anything working for this ?
I've tried wifi tether for root users
and lots of others.
Nothing allows for infrastructure. Even tried 3GHotspot.zip and Black Hat zip .
Any help ? Anyone got this working ?
Check themes and apps threads.. if you want to tether to Windows or Linux or another android device only way is wifi tether v3 beta 4 or higher enable mss clamping in settings and you can tether using ad-hoc but that is about it. Is this what you are trying to do??

I'm trying to connect my tablet to share my 4G.
Tablet only connects in infrastructure, not adhoc.
If I can fix on my phone ie add infrastructure, then I'll be ok. Otherwise I'll need to root and mess with the files on my tablet

You might have better luck finding a thread for your tablet and finding out how to change the wpa_supplicant so the tablet will detect an ad-hoc network. I used to have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" and had to find a patch and replace the wpa_supplicant (after rooting) so it could detect and connect to my android phone. What kind of tablet?
Only other thing I can think of is install the Verizon Hotspot app and pay for tethering.. that is infrastructure as far as I know.

I was wondering if anyone had tested the new update (1.2) with Wifi in the Ad Hoc Mode as is commonly used with WiFi Tethering apps? Version 1.1 could not see a ad hoc WiFi network without some file modifications.
answer from a newb
No it still does not see adhoc networks, what modifications do you speak of, for that is what i would like my nook to do, see and connect to adhoc networks. i assume i will have to root it, and if so is there a clear easy way to root the 1.2 update? or even better have the stock system and rooted system side by side (i think i read that you can use the sd card to hold the root info on. i a newb to all this rooting stuff, but want to expand and learn.

I am rooted on the stock 1.1. I use the ad hoc switcher (search these forums) when I need ad hoc to connect to my rooted Moto Droid with WiFi teather. If ad hoc is still not working with 1.2 then I will probably continue to use the switcher for the few times when I need it.
Still waiting on an auto-neuter for 1.2. When it is available, I will flash back to stock, upgrade to 1.2 and then auto-neuter 1.2. I used it for 1.1 and it was flawless.
If you are on stock, unrooted 1.2 then you might want to wait for the auto-neuter as well.
Ad Hoc is still broken. I had trouble also trying to use connectify (win 7 wi-fi sharing app)...my NC couldn't pick up the WPA2-PSK network. So no luck there either.
Ad-Hoc works for me without any modifications under 1.2 and sleep works without having to turn on and off the nook to get wifi to work again. I am in love!
Ad hoc now works fine with 1.2 -- just tried with with Wireless Tether and my Droid X.
Has anyone tried with the myWi from any iphone version?
Yes that's how I tether...it's working wonderfully with 1.2 no hack needed

Are you sure it is stock 1.2 and you are on a ad hoc network? It is still an android system that will not see ad hoc. I tested it today with windows wifi router on ad hoc and the nook would not see it.
My personal experience ... the ad hoc patched wpa_supplicant file on nookdevs.com and some xda forums works on all versions of nook color, stock mods or even honeycomb preview. But does not work on stock or rooted update 1.2. Apparently this is because the working os versions are using version 5 of wpa_supplicant and the patched verson is also version 5 ... nook color update1.2 however uses supplicant version 6 and no one has recompiled an ad hoc patched version 6 wpa_supplicant yet for the nook color as has been done for other phones and tablets on xda forums. While some people think they are connecting with phones via ad hoc, using version 1.2 of the nook, there phones are most likely generating aps in infrastructure modes and not ad hoc mode.
New, rooted 1.2 needs WPA supplicant fix for adhoc
At least in my experience. I bought my nc with the 1.2 already pre-installed. It would only recognize the infrastructure wifi. I have the droid 1. It does not have the option to become a WiFi hotspot as newer phones do (30$ through Verizon). With wireless tether/barnacle I've been able to connect through the droid as an adhoc network, but only after the wpa_supplicant fix. I use it every day this way, as there's no WiFi at my office.
BTW, it does go between my home wifi and my droid adhoc without having to make any additional hacks beyond the most basic one. It seems to recognize both easily, back & forth every day.
Rsptexas, just wanted to (respectfully!) be clear that the droid 1 is definitely adhoc, no question whatsoever. Though I'm aware people are getting confused about what their phone puts out. I can't recall which version of the supplicant fix finally worked, as I tried several. Don't give up on it folks, you can really get adhoc to work on 1.2
Final thing then I'll shut up: 'toolbelt' says the wpa supplicant fix in post 872521 on this forum has the version of the fix that works for the rooted 1.2 ( junior member, can't do links yet, sorry).
Just type the number of the post in the search box at the top of the page
I can verify that http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872521 does work for Manual nootered 1.2. I did not even need to apply the change back to infrastructure.
There is a lot of false info. out there. Many people think their phones are running AdHoc when in fact they are running infrastructure. Many modern modern phones can do infrastructure, and some roots provide it for free.
My lil old Eris, definitely does not support it.
Now my Nook can connect through AdHoc.

I'm tring to run WiFi tethering software so I can get internet access on my Toshiba Thrive Tablet. I have an original Motorola Droid phone. I rooted the phone and when I run any WiFi tethering software it's broadcasting in Ad-Hoc mode. For some reason my Tablet can't see any Ad-Hoc networks. So, this is a big problem for me.
My friend has a Droid Incredible and he has a custom ROM installed on his phone and his phone doesn't broadcast in Ad-Hoc mode, his phone broadcasts with a regular WiFi connection. Why does his work that way and mine only works in Ad-Hoc? Do I have to install a custom ROM to get mine to work in regular WiFi mode? If so, which ROM is recommended?
Another solution is to get my Tablet to recognize Ad-Hoc networks. Is there some way to do that also?
Thanks so much for all your help and time!
Which tethering app are you using?
Both Wireless Tether and the 2.2 default 3G Hotspot app are broadcasting in infrastructure mode.
I remember my Wii not being able to connect to a hotspot created via Wireless Tether - did'nt try 3G Hotspot yet...
Well, I've tried different Hot Spot Apps and they are all the same. I used the same app on both my Droid phone and my friends Incredible phone. His phone worked in Infrustructure and mine worked as Ad-Hoc. I don't know what default 3G Hostspot app you are talking about. My phone didn't come with any. From what I was reading it has to do with the hardware of the phone. Since my phone is so old it only supports Ad-Hoc and the newer phones support Infrustructure. I think that's what people are saying.
I've been reading there is a way to make Tablets see Ad-Hoc but I can't find any information on how to do it with the Toshiba Thrive Tablet. I guess there are different patches and you need to find the right version that's compatible with your Tablet.
So, the only solutions I can see is get a newer phone that supports Infrustructure or to find the patch that works with my Tablet and lets it see Ad-Hoc.
Thanks!

Hi Forum,
I cannot get my Sprint tab to see my phone after installing Gingerbread. My computer can see the phone and connect it, but the tab won't. Before Gingerbread, I was able to scan and connect to my phone and tether just fine. I tried diff. wifi tethering app. Currently use Barnacle. My tab is not rooted, but that should not be a problem.

which version of GB do you have installed? Is it the stock sprint update? Have you tried the WPA supplicant fix for it yet?
I using Sprint OTA Gingerbread, 2.3.4. Build number EF17. I have not tried the WPA supplicant fix. I did not have problem with this issue on Froyo. I will research on this. I would like some tips if you got them. Thank you !
I found a link on the issue, but require root. I am reluctant to take this step. It is not that I don't know how to use Odin, but removing root is a pain.
Here is the link to WPA supplicant if any interested.

from everything i've read, you won't be able to connect to ad-hoc mode wireless (most wifi tether apps) without the wpa supplicant patch. you might look into a wifi tether app that will do infrastructure mode to get that working again.
@ pvtjoker42,
Thank you for the tip. I did some further research and the Wifi Tether app works in infrastructure mode too. If any one interested, here is how you do it. Choose device profile- I chose Samsung Galaxy S. I also tested Samsung Galaxy Indulge. Under Setup-Method, choose Softap ( master). Now your Samsung Tab will see the phone. This app drains battery like no tomorrow, much more than Barnacle.
how to use adhoc wifi?how to use adhoc wifi?
As I know adhoc NOT supported

There is something called "wifi Direct" which might be another name for the same thing. Read about it in the user manual, which can be downloaded from Samsung in a pdf. Sorry no link.
If your trying to use the Adhoc to tether other devices to your Note to use it's data connection, then you go into your Settings -> Wireless and network -> Tethering and portable hotspot, enable this, set up a password if you wish, then you can connect to it via wifi now.
Does the phone see wifi adhoc?
Sorry to bring up this thread, didn't want to start a new one.
Now that many people own the nexus. Can someone tell me if the phone can connect to a wifi adhoc? To avoid misunderstanding, this is not the same as tethering phone's internet to other devices (that what's Wifi Direct is about, I think). This is the phone using internet from pc via adhoc wifi (for example using the program Connectify).
Thanks
There is a guide for galaxy s2, just google it (cannot post link), you need to change wpa_supplicant file
Worked for me
sorry for bringing it up again.
changed wpa_supplicant to the one from galaxy s2 and changed permissions. But didnt work for me!
Anyone got files for me so i can use adhoc wifi?
i really need it! thanks a lot guys

If you used this guide "Connect to adhoc Wireless Networks on your Galaxy S2 (SC-02C)" the is should work, maybe it depends on firmware, I have N7000XXKK5
well with this wpa_supplicant i can see the ad-hoc but i cant connect.
And although my note freezes if i use this one. isnt there one especially build for the SGN?
i have kernel N7000XXKK9
I don't understand, if you want to connect to a PC via wifi to use the PC's internet, then isn't it then down to setting the PC as the adhoc and connecting you phone via wifi as if it was connecting to an wireless router? Or Wi-Fi Direct (which is the phone connecting to other devices, not other devices connecting to the phone i.e. tethering)? Can anyone clarify what the issue is?

The issue is that, by default, the Nexus can't see adhoc wifi and therefore can't connect to it. You need to somehow modify wpa-supplicant to be able to see adhoc wifi.

Hi,
I'd like to share my 3G access on Nokia E71 to my Galaxy Note.
On the E71, there is a software to share the network over ad-hoc wifi connection. (Joikuspot)
But as far as I know , wpa_supplicant on Galaxy Note does not support ad-hoc.
Is there a modified wpa_supplicant which supports ad-hoc for Galaxy Note ?
p.s: this method is working on my previous phone Dell Streak
Thanks.
hi,
I've found one wpa_supplicant on another forum. but that doesn't work. (wifi can't go enabled)
is there no wpa_supplicant suitable for Galaxy Note ?
any interest in this ?
Have u try barnacle wifi tether?
I exactly dont remember but it was barnacle or wireless tether that i hav used on sgs, that i think support ad hoc
I'd like to use default system settings, not a 3rd party app.
So a wpa_supplicant would be lovely.
where can we find one ?
maybe something for SGS II would do...
ok; I got it from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115610
works fine...
attaching here if anyone needs.
just have to manually configure DNS (or put a /etc/resolv.conf with nameservers)
but I already did that to support VPN connections.
I tried this method and copied the file you gave but did not work. The wifi is still working fine but not ad hoc. Do u have any idea why?
disregard that, it worked perfectly. Thanks

hey.. with your file i was able to detect my wifi hotspot (connectify) that i made on my laptop (win 7). but its is not connecting. it just shows searching for ip address. i dont know the configuration for ip settings (in wifi settings/advanced in phone). i dont think i have static ip either for my internet. im trying to share a wireless data card connection (mts mblaze). what should i do? what settings should i put in ip settings in the Note (ip address, dns1,dns2 etc..)
I found the application Wifi Ad Hoc enabler on the market and it worked grate for me, now i can see any ad hoc and connect normally
I'd like to know about this as well.
it seems I can see my adhoc connections but I CAN'T Connect to them. Any help would be nice.

No, above solution is for GB ROM only, on newer ROMs (ICS&JB) it's not working. I know in Windows 7 there is a solution with virtual (or soft) AP, but in Windows XP it's not a solution, because XP has no support for softAP, only ad-hoc networks (so programs like Connectify or mhotspot, VirtualRouter, etc. NOT works.) At my office i have only Windows XP & ad-hoc network, and this is why i need working ad-hoc mode on my Note.
So, up to now, i tried at least 10 modded wpa_supplicant file on my Note, and none of them worked. Some of them had blocked WIFI on Note, others had worked, but don't seen the ad-hoc networks (like the original wpa_supplicant), so i think maybe the problem it's not only wpa_supplicant related. I found an ICS ROM (ICS_Stunner) which claims that has support for ad-hoc connections, but i didn't tried out, because its outdated (i only extracted the wpa_supplicant file from ROM and tried on my current JB rom, but didn't works).
So i think we need a good developer who can resolve this...
now there is a cream & cookies JB rom from the sam developer of ICS Stunner. If stunner had it.. it should be in this rom as well. worth a try i would say.
