[Q] Bricked - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone that says you can't brick a Galaxy Tablet short of dropping the thing...
...is mistaken.
related- anyone know where I can get a 7" cdma galaxytab mobo cheap? don't care if ESN is clean, just using with wifi.
thanks.

probably cheaper/easier to send it to someone with jtag stuff to unbrick it.. unless you actually fried the mobo, shouldn't be that hard to unbrick with the right tools..

it doesn't even turn on anymore. gonna try to find one that someone cracked the screen on and see if I can get a mobo out of it.
I hadn't heard the term jtagged, in association with a CDMA tablet. Did I miss something?

[Q] Anyone has exp. with RIFF JTAG to unbrick captivate

Today I bricked my captivate and tried various methods to try to unbrick it.
But looks like it is really bricked and was wondering if RIFF JTAG would help
http://www.jtagbox.com/?s=captivate
They seem to have added support for captivate today itself. So not sure how many folks would have used it to unbrick captivate, but in general has anyone used the RIFF jtag to unbrick any phone?
Or has any one used the JTAG to unbrick captivate?
Interesting find. I have very little experience with JTAG so can't really help but I am curious to know what you find out. Keep us posted.
I too have truely bricked my captivate. Quite upsetting but I have been wondering about these options as well
Me too, Me too, Mines bricked from bad bootloader, I can't get anything to show up, not even the (phone --- ! --- PC) thing.
Found a forum that people have successfully unbricked with the JTAG, but I have yet to get in touch with any of them to see if I can get them to unbrick mine for me.
If anyone is willing to do this, I'd be willing to pay some $ for it, I don't trust my soldering skills, or I'd buy the JTAG and attempt it myself.
Thanks!
- Greg C.
I was skeptical at first, but when I saw the device itself and its specifications I can believe it does what it says for sure. Would be interested to know how much it costs though. Has anybody inquired as to its cost yet, by chance?
It costs $150 US including delivery. Tempting...
No JIG no JTAG

You guys don't need JTAG.. If you don't wanna mess around with soldering and Jig, try the method in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=889128
Takes a little time but cheap and no soldering or breaking a usb cord required..
Tried that resistor trick, didn't work on my bricked phone, but it did work on my replacement.
I'd love to get my brick working again so my fiancee can have it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
And it does work, there is a JTAG forum that one particular person has unbricked over 20 phones, a few of which were Captivates

Ricky, you think I'd spend $150 if it only fixed Captivates when I can easily fix it with a jig on a soft brick? It advertises that it can unbrick most modern phones including Androids and Iphone. That is tempting, imo.

If a Jig doesn't fix it, i'd sell my Captivate for parts rather than a JTag
Hey, I'm in Belgium and can unbrick model you want...
Most of cases you do not need a JTAG. You may want to try a jig first.

[Q] Is my Captivate bricked? Guys, I need your help !

Hello everyone,
One day, I upgraded a ROM firmware (I don't remember which ROM exactly..) on my Captivate..
I formated everything before update (data, cache, AND system !).
During update I was making a coffee, and when I came back on the phone,
it was absolutely dead.. Only a full black screen.. Not detected on USB, just nothing.
After that, I tried everything that was possible (a lot of combo's, Odin3..)
Then, I bought a JIG, but still nothing, I tried with some different combo's (I can't remember which ones..)
Now, I would like to recover my Captivate! But.. how ?
If someone find the final good solution, I would like to donate via Paypal
Thanks, in advance!
Need more info. Which rom? Did you use 3 button fix? Have you tried adb? What about holding volume down while plugging in usb? Are you sure battery isn't just dead (dont laugh, its happened)?
If you did all that, its most likely a hard brick. There are developers here that offer JTAG service.
As I said, I don't remember the ROM. I was trying every new ROM, so, I really can't remember.. Sorry
About 3 button fix.. I don't know what it is exactly !? If it is vol down+up+Power, yes I did !
Nope, I did not try ADB.. I tried to find informations about this, but I cannot find! If you can help me about this, u'r' welcome !
Vol down does nothing..
I think my battery is still alive. Because when I plug my charger on it, it becomes a little warm after some hours, so I guess it's still alive..
I saw some JTAG infos, but I don't know what to do.. Do I need to send my Captivate to a JTAG's owner in USA !? It's like 40$ to send a secured shipping to USA..
Thanks for trying to help me!
If a jig will not turn it back on you may need the jtag. There are threads about it.

I made some searchs on eBay but I found nothing.
Thanks for helping
EDIT : I installed ADB on my computer, now I would like to connect it to my phone, but.. Don't know how!? What combo do I need to do, for my captivate be recognized by ADB ?
Thanks.

JTAG is not something you can buy on ebay. As mrhaley said, you need to send your phone to one of the developers who offer JTAG service. They will fix it and send it back to you.
Download AIO toolbox, go to advanced and clock reboot into download mode with your phone on and it will go to download mode, no jig needed. it worked for me just now.

Thank you guys for these answers.
* The problem is that I cannot send my Captivate to a JTAG's owner in USA,
because it's approximately 40$ fees to send it ! Then, with a return, it makes a total of 80$..
* Another problem is that I bought my captivate on eBay, and it's not under warranty..
* Maybe it remains the "ADB" solution (I never tried this), but I don't know how to connect my phone? because it stays turned off, then if I connect, I just get nothing..
Adb doesn't work unless you can get into the OS. You have a brick, jtag is your ONLY option of getting a working phone.

Ok, I understand, but .. How could i use a JTAG if I cannot send my Captivate to USA ? (too much expensive!). Thanks
It's either bricked forever or you pay for jtag. Those are your only options.

Is that possible to make one myself ? I will never buy a Samsung anymore
How are you at soldering? The captivate is one of the hardest phones to jtag, the solder points are smaller than the width of a dime, it would be really easy to fry the circuit board trying to jtag it yourself.

Do you think I can still sell my Captivate, for those who want to repair/fix or use parts? If I can, what kind of price? (my captivate is in perfect state, like new)
There's a user from XDA forums,Mcguyver1980. In one of his posts says he's in Belgium and can fix bricked phones. I don't know anything about this guy personally, but since you're about to scrap your phone I figured it wouldn't hurt for you to check if this guy is legit. Just make sure he understand it's a hard brick.

[Q] Bricked Captivate, at a loss here

A work friend of mine had his Captivate bricked mid update by his child.
I offered to fix it, brought it back by Heimdall (2.2). Charged it for about an hour and a half, then decided to try to upgrade it to gingerbread through Kies mini on my wife's laptop. It got stuck at 4%, and after a while I figured I could use Heimdall again, then flash 2.3 through other means.
Problem is now I can't get into download mode, nor powered on to the phone ! PC screen.
I owned a captivate before switching to Sprint, soft bricked it numerous times (Odin was my best friend) haven't ran into this problem before.
What next?

So...it does nothing at all? Just sits there like a bag o'marbles?
If so, Sounds like it failed while updating bootloaders, and if that's the case it's bricked, like brick bricked. Only unbrickable mod can bring it back.
On a side note FU kies for flashing the bootloaders FIRST, that's just dumb....they should be at the end so if it does disconnect or fail it would most likely be before it got to the dangerous part, making it a safer flash. Wtf were they thinking?
Kind of what I feared, thought it was odd that it crashed the phone that hard after only 4%.
Luckily he's already got a new phone, I was just curious if I could bring the old one back to life.
Was kind of hoping it might be a battery thing.

That is incorrect. You could have Mobile Tech Videos JTAG it and resurrect it. Although the unbrickable mod is the prefered solution (Hence unbrickable) JTAG is for the people who have never held a soldering iron in their hands before. They are reliable and can have your phone running stock within 5 days of mailing it off.
Off topic: why would it be so hard for samsung to solder those couple wires that make up the unbrickable mod in factory during production. Theres another defficiency in over seas companies, they try to get off doing as little work as possible. When you make a phone running an open source OS, 99% some kid in his basement is going to mod it to perform better than stock OS. which is the case of most androids. Cmon' samsung! get your act together!
Yes....jtag can bring it back, but once and then it.can be bricked again, why do that when you can send it to mobiletechvideos and get unbrickable mod applied? he offers that service too.
a solution and then A chance to brick and have to send it off again, versus a solution that is done once and then after that is fixable by the user themself...i am aware of jtag but on phones that have unbrickable mod it's really just too antiquated to be a viable option, which is why i didn't mention it.

Was not aware of that haha. Definately if deciding between JTAG for 40$ and Unbrickable mod for 45$, the 5$ will save you whole lot of time, money, and headaches.

FYI...mobile tech videos will also do the unbrickable mod for you... either option is available from them. AdamOutler will also do it for you last i heard 30 bucks after shipping.
are you friggin kidding me?? its not just regular soldering... or a regular soldering iron. And JTag is a method of using open pads on the mainboard, used by almost all cell companies to program the phones and allows direct input/output control. And until AdamOutler's research into the processor was the only way to de-brick. oh.. and on some phones JTag requires soldering..
WIKIPEDIA Jtag.

Questions about hard brick

I'd like to apologize in advance for most likely posting this in the wrong section.
Anyway, I recently rooted my Galaxy Ace and immediately proceeded to convert it into a moderately expensive paperweight (hard bricked). I already know nothing is going to work, and my only option is turning it in to Samsung for repairs and service.
I would like to know, if the phone (being hard bricked) still contains any evidence to it being rooted that my void my warranty or is the storage completely wiped? If not, what is the best lie to cover up this accident? If so, is it best to tell the truth.
Also, apparently I can fix it with a jtag kit (whatever that is). Is this complicated and how do I get a hold of such a kit
I thank you in advance.
mKoo_08
If you search here or on Google you can find info about jtag. I do remember seeing a few threads in the Q&A section of the Ace forums about bricked phones, you may find something there. If you do take it in for repair, play stupid about rooting and custom roms etc. You know nothing about what they are, if you catch my drift.

I doubt I'd actually do the effort to do the jtag thing since it's only temporary phone. And thanks for the advice on playing dumb. I suspect that's what I'll do. I know worse case scenario is my motherboard is shot. Do you have any idea how much a replacement might cost?

[Q] Connections for Jtag Samung Galaxy 8.9 Tablet

I have got a Riff Jtag Box from ebay, I have recently bricked my Samsung galaxy tablet 8.9 by installing a bad rom, although I found a youtube video about jtag and how to jtag. I received the jtag box and now I need the correct connections to solder the wires on to my tablets mother board. All I need to know is where can I find the correct connection for the jtag box to connect to the mother board , Thank you
My Device Is A: Samsung galaxy tab 8.9
Bricked
Idk, but it probably makes a difference if your tab is a p73xx or an i957.

Check out mobiletechvideos.com They can jtag it for you cheaper than samsung.
Ok
I have heard of them, Only problem is that I am in Australia. I think there service is located in America.
Not many people offer jtag repair services here I dont think unless you take it to samsung.
Another problem is its on contract with A carrier.
Alirght Found A tech that might help paying $50 to reinstall the internal firmware see how it goes to tommrow will reply here then.
I donr know what anyone is on about but I took my device into the technicians and they could not retrieve the tablet no matter what. Even with jtag. This just goes to show JTag does NOT save all devices that get bricked during firmware installations.
Anyway I have bought A new tablet Samsung Galaxy 7.0 This time I am never rooting again.
I got a smaller screen since I now I have A computer and it would still do the same job.
Thanks anyway
