Just moved from CM6.2 to CM7.0.3 and had a few questions.
1. With CM6.2 I was able to display the signal strength next to the signal bars. Can't seem to do that in 7.0.3, but I'm probably just missing something.
2. Settings - Privacy - Back Up My Data. I can't remember if this was an option on CM6, and if it was, I never used it.
On CM7, if I check this, does that mean all my phone data (excluding sdcard data) is backed up to Google's servers under whichever google account I first signed into the phone with? Does it also back up my apps?
3. In CM6, there was an option to have lockscreen text, which was compatible with a pattern lockscreen (the text showed just above the pattern field). Can't seem to find that in CM7. Is this gone?
Thanks!

Hello
1.) The option to display signal stenghth as text (DB) was not available in CM 7.0.3. However, it has since been merged, and is available in the current nightly builds found here: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=heroc
2.) This has nothing to do with CM, it is a feature of Android that was introduced with 2.2. I don't know the full list of items that are backed up to the cloud, but I know it includes: WiFi keys, wallpaper settings, general settings such as volume & brightness. It backs up user apps, which allows them to auto-install from the market.
3.) CM7 does not have the option to display user-defined text on the lockscreen. But you can display a custom image on your lockscreen (more recent nightlies only?) so if it means that much to you, I suppose you could take a screenshot of your CM6 lockscreen setup, and use that

I'm surprised they got rid of this. It's the easiest way to make sure you get your phone back if you lose it. A good lock is a sufficient theft deterrent to the average person who finds a phone and with contact info on the lockscreen, it's easy for them to give you your phone back.
Looked around in CM7.0.3 and couldn't find an option to display a custom image or different wallpaper on the lockscreen, so it must be only available on the nightlies, as you suggest.
CM stable is up to 7.1 now

Im having trouble flashing 7.1 it gets to the htc screen then boots back into recovery. Ive wiped sysem, data, cache everything and I just cannot get it to boot.
What ROM ru coming from?
If anything other than cm then I recommend factory reset and wipe everything else to.
Then flash both ROM and gapps using recovery
Good luck

Thanks for the advice. I update my recovery to CMW Recovery 5.0.2.6 and it booted up fine.

Hi
Ive been trolling around for a while.
So far ive
-unlocked the bootloader, flashed the boot with epe54b himem from modaco
-put the file in place that enabled the color trackball notifications from chainsdd, which while there is no config and it simply enables the apps to be able to flash different colors is actually kind of nice
- tried to install the wifi tether from the code.google.com page but apparently the kernal i have doesnt work with the wifi drivers the android-wifi-tether app needs and the himem superboot that i flashed cause my wifi doesnt start when i use that. so i just went with barnacle app to use as wifi tether which works without having to modify the kernal and wifi driver.
i still have the stock recovery and stock rom, and sort of like it that way. dont want to start messing with roms untill i am confident i can easily restore all of the phone and game settings i have(the girlfriend was sort of sad when i told her i lost the progress she had made in abduction world attack, not to mention i forgot to unlink my warcraft authenticator before the initial wipe after the bootloader unlock...dreading calling blizzard and getting that sorted out)
couple of questions i have -
what does the userdata store specifically? does it store all of the shortcuts and widgets i have on the home screens? the google voice and phone settings and system settings?
i looked around a bit and still cant find a definitive answer to this, if i put nandroid or amon_ra recovery in as the recovery, then flash it back to the stock recovery from the modaco site, will i be able to get ota updates.
if i back up my system, userdata, and cache then start messing with roms and wiping everything on the phone, will i be able to restore the system, userdata and cache and be ready to go in the all of 3 or so minutes it takes to flash them.
The only reason im so concerned with being able to go back to what i had is i rely on the phone a bit for work and after hours calls and things of that nature and need to be able to be ready to go if need be. after unlocking the bootloader and that initial wipe the part that took the longest was getting the shortcuts and widgets, email and contact icons on my home screens back to where i wanted them and dont want to have to do that again.
basically i want to flash roms, and shop around for a good rom that i like while still being able to flash back to what i currently have set up, home screen shortcuts, k9email, phone and all.
Anyone have any input?
Just get Titanium backup for your apps, and also flash a recovery that lets you do Nandroid backups. Really, if you are unlocked, there is absolutely no downside to using Amon's recovery image, and having backups is excellent piece of mind.
I tried editing my post, and it erased what I wrote.
OK, again:
1. Nandroid backups save everything, including all of your user data, EXCEPT what is saved to the SD card by certain apps. All of that can of course just be copied off.
2. Why would you want OTA updates? All the OTA process does is download the update.zip file into /cache, and then launch recovery to install it from there. This means that, once the file is available, someone will post the update.zip minutes later and you can flash all you like.
3. Nandroid gives you a complete system backup, including user data and configuration. Titanium backup will add in being able to restore configured apps onto a different ROM (for example). Use both, be safe, wear protection.
ok, sounds like nandroid gives me what im looking for then
perhaps i'll try and imaging and restoring it to see how it goes when im sure work will not bother
and i'd like ota updates since im lazy lol
I apologise in advance if this is in the wrong section
My problem is the following:
I am currently using RC3 of Cyanogen's ROM. However, ROM Manager tells me there is an update, that being 6.0.0-N1
So I backed up the ROM using ROM Manager, installed the latest update, then restored the settings and applications from the backup I made. As far as I can tell, this reverts back to RC3, which is obviously not what I want
My question is, is there a way to backup the settings, applications and changes I made (UI, performance etc) so that, having installed 6.0.0-N1, I can restore and effectively use my phone the same as before (just with an updated ROM)?
Thanks
you're correct this is wrong section for your question hihi~
as far as I know, you might be able to use Titanium Backup to back up all applications, including few of system settings, it's available as free software in Market.
Every CM release introduces new features, so it might not be practical to back up all settings, since they may change in newer release.
I think I've heard of people who upgraded from CM 6 RC3 to CM6 Stable by flashing zip in recovery and had no problem... so you might like to try this way.
hmm.. dude.. you have no idea what you are doing..
Download the update via ROM Manager when it's downloaded a dialog appears. Click backup ROM and only that! no need to wipe. Click ok, wait for it to install... and that is it... no need to do anything else.
As for your backup restore.. ofcourse it goes back to RC3.. you restored te whole RC3 backup image.. that deletes the current system...
when you're upgrading from RC3 to final CM6 your settings apps all of it will stay if you don't wipe and it should work ok.
When I upgrade, the settings don't stay the same
For example, I set it to have 7 home screens and only 4 icons per row on the application drawer; when I upgrade, it goes back to whatever it would be normally

thats probably because you wiped.
If you restore to your RC3 backup you can go into settings > ADWLauncher > Backup and restore > backup ADW settings and Backup desktop configuration. Now upgrade to the stable release with no wipe. If your home screens don't survive, then first make sure all the same apps are installed and then restore the ADW backup the same way. The only things that won't make the trip are your widgets, which you'll have to re-add.
*Im coming from an Inspire and An Atrix and there are SO fewer options for those phones.
*I have searched both Google and XDA but I still have no idea whats best for my phone.
I have a stock N1 running 2.3.3 build GRI40
I have gotten as far as unlocking the bootloader. Now I need to know whats the best way to get what I want out of this phone.
My requests are simple, I want a rom/mod? that will enable different color trackball notifications thats fast and stable and will also install root. If I need to root first than please advise which is the cleanest way. I have read about a super one click available for the N1, but am a bit apprehensive as that method made a mess of my Atrix (busybox issues)
I'm just looking for some kind advice and a push (preferably a nudge ) in the right direction here. Im a fast learner, just slow to get going
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help.
As youve already unlocked your bootloader and are looking for a new rom then you dont need to root your current one. Simply boot to the bootloader, flash your recovery of choice, reboot into it and flash your rom of choice. You'll find plenty of guides/info in the dev forum or nexus one wiki.
As for the rom, I've tried the majority of roms out there but have ended up coming back to cm7. It has trackball alert/wake and inbuilt support for trackball notifications (And the Trackball alert app from the market). I did remove several apps using titanium backup but its still an excellent rom. It also has a great community following, receives regular updates (There are even nightlies for flash addicts) and has numerous add ons/themes for cm7 exclusively.
However you may be best at trying a few roms and seeing how they feel as every users needs differ. Should you end up going with cm7 make sure to go to Settings - Cyanogenmod settings, that's where all the fun is
I think unlocking the bootloader does not necessarily mean you get the root access right away, Right? Please correct me if I am wrong. In case you need to root your stock gingerbread, you can try gingerbreak v1.2. It is easy to use and works for me.
In my experience, cm7.0.2.1 is still the most functional mod for n1 so far. Regarding the trackball notification, I like the Light flow with stock gingerbread better because it allows me to use different colors even with different gmail accounts.
thank you both!!
regarding light flow, I installed it on the phone as is right now (bootloader unlocked) 2.3.3 and the notifications dont work. Is light flow functional only after root?
Again, thank you SO much, I really appreciate all the help! You guys are geniuses here!
Also, which recovery is best? I used clockwork mod on my other phones, but didnt know if that was optimal for the N1
Thank you!!!!
According to the light flow app, it should work in non-rooted stock (although my stock gingerbread has been rooted). Have you changed the accessibility setting?
I will recommend to use either RA 2.2.1 or clockwork 2.5.1.4 for recovery. I have tried clockwork 3.0.0.5 before. It messed up my SD card.
The best option for color track ball is installing cyanogen 7. It has full color track ball built right into the main phone settings menu. Stable, most options of all choices out there, and easiest.

Give the ROM thread and this one a good read before you post, you may find the answer is already available. Keep in mind that each device may behave slightly different, so YMMV
People have found different ways to successfully install, and it works for them, but their method may not work for everyone. So it is highly suggested to follow the method recommended by the developers.
This is copied directly from the dev OP:
"-First time flashing ICS to your Captivate (or coming from another ROM)?
1. Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery.
2. Reboot into Recovery using 3-button-combo
3. Do a Nandroid backup!
4. WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
5. Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
6. Optionally install the Google Addon
7. WIPE again or Calendar Sync will not work
-Upgrading from CM7?
1. Do a Nandroid Backup!
2. WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
3. Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
4. Optionally install the Google Addon
-Upgrading from another CM9 (or teamhacksung) Build?
1. Do a Nandroid Backup!
2. Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
3. Optionally install the Google Addon
Note: The upgrade process from CM7 to ICS is automatic, but downgrading from ICS to CM7 (or restoring Nandroid) requires flashing twice. Once from ICS and again from CM7's recovery."

Reporting Bugs
You are allowed to report bugs ONLY in the Development thread. Before reporting a bug, please make sure you are running as stock as possible. This means no custom kernel, no custom framework modification, etc. If you are using any of the above modifications, please flash the rom again to get rid of the modifications before reporting.
Grab a logcat right after the problem has occurred.
If it is a random reboot, grab /proc/last_kmsg. (Do not bother getting a logcat unless you can get it just before the reboot. A logcat after a reboot is useless)
Remember to provide as much info as possible. The more info you provide, the more likely that the bug will be solved. The following is a useful format to follow.
Thanks to the entire CyanogenMod Team for creating their magic for our aging Captivates!
I just registered so I can't post in the development thread... I hope this is the next best place...
I flashed build 3 of the ICS ROM and the DNS, at least for wifi, seems hardcoded to 8.8.8.8. I changed it to my local DNS ('su', 'setprop net.dns1 192.168.1.1'), checked that I could ping a local name, turned wifi off and on again, and it had gone back to 8.8.8.8. I'm new to Android so I don't know whether there's a way to set it harder, but I had expected that it would get the DNS servers from DHCP... that is definitely what stock Gingerbread and CM7 both did.
Hopefully some kind person will pass this message on to the developers... I am not sure whether this is the wifi DNS update issue listed in the Known Issues on the dev thread but if so maybe that should be marked confirmed
What should i do before flashing this rom? I'm currently with gal net miui. I assume that's cm7? So should i just flash after wipe? Or go back to stock first?
Sent from my I897 using XDA App
it states to wipe data and cache, then install from miui or CM7, no need to return to stock. Some run it better than others, mines running just fine with their release 3

Uninstall the app and reinstall from the market.
Glitch kernel let me OC to 1.4!
Thanks flashman that worked.
Dunno if anyone else has this issue but both mornings since flashing, I've woken up to an unresponsive touchscreen. clicking the hard button brings up the lock screen and everything looks right but it's just unresponsive to touch. I've had to fiddle with the hard buttons to be able to use the touchscreen again.
When finding things wrong with this build, you do have to realize that it's not even a beta yet, and things are gonna be slow/broken/or not integrated yet. I'm sure the devs will add all this stuff once the basic framework is solid. And like someone else stated, the best way is to go from CM7. It's very easy. I can even flash back and forth no hassle

FB sync doesn't work on ICS at all so I wouldn't expect a quick fix. I downloaded the friendcaster app and used that to sync with my contacts.

You don't need to flash a kernel for this. At least it's a very bad idea in this stage of development. But if you need it for some other purpose, it's in the OP of the ICS thread
This just started happening, when I flash new ROMs, I've noticed that my wallpaper from my prior ROM is showing up on the home screen right away on a clean flash of a new ROM. I used the restore apps option. Is Google also restoring my old wallpaper background ? As a result, the stock wallpaper of the ROM is not showing up on the first boot up.

Yes. It is well known that the google restore option cause lots of issues and should almost never be used.
For some reason this just started recently. I used to use Google's restore frequently in the past and never encountered this.

Just goes to show that it has not really been working. Also I would never use this on custom roms. The settings are vastly different and restoring stuff can cause major issues.
zelendel, do you mean that the restore is ropey on even stock, or only on custom ROMs? When I've installed a new stock ROM (e.g. Lollipop to Marshmallow, complete wipe) the Google auto-restore did what it said on the tin, though only for maybe half of my apps - I had to restore the rest manually. Is this what you mean? Apart from this I haven't noticed any problems.
I don't have titanium Backup pro but if I did presumably I can just back up all user apps then restore them. I'm guessing most likely Google is pulling my wallpaper from my theme that has been integrated via CMTE that has been automatically back up. In the past all new custom roms restored with no issue and in fact it still does. I have 100% of all my apps downloaded. For whatever reason my prior wallpaper is also included.

I mean that it acts funny on all roms. Like you said even with Stock it doesnt completely work. This happens more with custom roms then stock but even on stock it can be iffy.
I tend to disagree. I've been using googles backup and restore for quite a while, and it always works perfectly for me, stock or custom ROM.

And this is why it is so odd. I have never had it work right. Even on Stock. It would restore some things and not others. To the point that the rom devs have told people not to do it. Well it is never advised to use it on custom roms as it restores system settings as well and those settings get messed up due to changes in the system by Rom developers.
If it works for some then Im glad, Just wish they would figure out a way for it to completely work for everyone all the time but I can see why it would only work on Stock.
