Hi guys,
Pretty new at this. I was trying to switch over from firefly to Sensation just now on my captivate. I used odin toflash back to stock, and then used clockwork to install the Rom.
So the Rom installs fine, but the menu stays open with no option to reboot. For some reason I selected Apply update.zip. Then the phone reboots, at&t logo pops up. Instead of the phone booting up after that, the screen goes black and a blue stripe runs across the screen. I know the phone still has power because the buttons still light up, but no signs of life other than that.
How bad does it sound, and what is my next step?
weird, thats a new one...
yank the battery, then try the button combos to get onto download mode and flash back to stock.
And once after stock u still wanna go for Sensation then DO NOT forget to flash gb bootloaders prior the rom Follow the instructions in the op !!
Ok, thanks for the help so far. Finally got it into download mode and after a bit of fighting I was able to wipe it again. Used Odin one click to go back to stock.
The bootloader thing was the problem, I didn't even see that in the post. Must have passed it by when I was trying to skip to the end of the pictures.
Reading the instructions now, I'm kind of strugging. To flash to the I9000 Gingerbread, does it matter than my phone is I897?
Read, read and read and follow the instructions and u'll be fine. Now that you're back on 2.1 follow the steps from 2nd post from -B onwards.
There are 3 types of roms for our cappys : i897 base , i9000 base and AOSP base ROMs. The SensatioN rom is i9000 based (JVQ) ,reoriendted for cappy.

So i've been searching for a few hours while trying to flash my cappy with speedmod kernel for 5 hours...
I don't know whats wrong but I can never get passed the galaxy s screen right after the opening at&t world phone screen. I am able to go into recovery mode and go through features but every time I reboot or turn my phone on it never gets passed the galaxy s screen. it seems like the kernel is running fine but then it stops right after the opening at&t screen. what am i doing wrong???? I have been at this for too long.
Can someone please help me with my problem... I can't seem to find anything about this and a lot of people aren't having much problem flashing this kernel. why can't I be one of those people... please! if you can push me into the right direction, that would be great!
btw... it seems like its frozen on this screen but I don't think it really is.
how long does the first boot of a new kernel take? any adjustments in recovery mode that I need to make? I've also tried the older speedmod kernels and and I get the same problem. Am I using odin right, because I followed the speedmod tutorials word for word...
did you feel any vibration during your booting? like one vibration or three vibrations?
I don't think there was any vibrations upon booting. if there was I believe it was only one. I could be wrong though. at this point I don't even want to put a custom kernal on my phone. I've been at this for a long time and it seems like I haven't gotten anywhere.
which rom are you on?
im running stock everything but superuser permission root. stock kernal and what not also. I ended up using odin one-click downloader to flash back to stock. now my phone is back to stock and working.
the thing is that I want to flash speedmod on my phone but now I cant get into download mode or recovery mode. my phone is glitchy now too.
can you provide some suggestion on how to flash right? I would ask in the speedmod thread but Im a new to the threads and it wont let me yet.
If you have more than 10 posts its a better idea to ask ur questions in ROM thread, else this thread is for you.
Safe Flashing from Gingerbread
Thank you for starting this thread
I am currently running Apex 6.3 and want to flash to a newer rom, Apex 7.
I have a Rogers phone I896 and so I no longer have my volume buttons working to put it in to recovery or download mode, I have read not to load any kinda fix for that(something about two boot loaders being a bad idea).
My understanding is that I have to go back to stock before flashing a new rom(I have seen you have roms that can be upgraded rather then re-flashed) but I want to wipe my internal sd card and flash like new.
Do I just use ODIN 1 click and go back to stock and use it to clean my sd card, is that a safe option or am I missing something?
If I remember correctly I had to do like 2 or 3 steps to flash Gingerbread from from stock rom, load boot loaders, load kernel, load rom. So I am wondering if it is 1 step to go back to stock ?
I know I have seen a post on a thread on this but to find it when needed is not so easy, XDA-Developers has grown big time since I started with WM5(Android is all new to me)
Hi I had a question concerning running new boot animations for APEX 7 with Update-1 package.
I found this boot animation http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1121014 that I would like to install but it seems as though it isn't working. Is it possible with this ROM to get new boot animations?
Thank You
So you can't put the phone into download mode?
Odin 1 click is pretty straight forward from what I remember. First I boot up the phone normally and hit "master clear". Second I put the phone into download mode and hit the "Start" button which goes and installs the stock firmware. Obviously you need to be in debug mode to do all this so make sure you're good with that.
I don't know if you already have it but here is a link for the Odin 1 click I use.

Will have to wait for boot animations to work buddy, as of now kernels dont support it
If you are already on ApeX 6.x you can flash 7 using CWM.. No need to ODIN back to JF6.
In worst case if u have to ODIN back that should be to stock GB.
But as i said just flash 7 on top of 6.3 by going into recovery mode

First off I want to say thank you for making an awesome ROM. Loving it thus far and has been running flawlessly except for one minor issue I ran into tonight. For the MIUI lockscreen the phone freezes then goes to the android boot animation screen and right back to the MIUI lock screen whenever I try to unlock with SMS unlock. Is this a known issue with the screen unlock concerning MIUI?

U have not set custom app for lockscreens. clicking on message icon takes u to custom app u select and since u have not selected it reboots.
See ROM OP on how to do it.
Thanks for ur feedback buddy

hey! amazing job on this one looks really promising! I have GR-12 on my cappy with the latest talon kernel and GB bootloader. my question is, if i want to install this do i need to flash back to stock 2.1 and do the entire process (reinstall talon and bootloader then install your rom)? OR can i just enter recovery mode with my phone currently using gr-12 and use CWM to install APEX 7 rom? either way i have to first install apex 7 then use cwm to install update 1 directly after correct?

PLEASE HELP ME PLEASE BEEN UP 48hr researching
Installed Apex_7 on my phone and i used a kernal swap to bypass the froyo file verification instead of going back to eclair first. after i got all working and installed Apex i rebooted my phone the at&t logo came up then the screen went all crazy and then kept replaying the galaxy s animation so then i used odin to go back to stock after odin said success i rebooted the phone and now im stuck at the at&t logo. cant get into download mode
AND i have made a usb jig but it does not work i tried 3 100k resistors and 3 100k and 1 1k and still nothing. Also if i take a ohm meter it will only read up to 2 resistors at a time once i add the 3rd one i get a split second reading then nothing but ive tested them all by there self and they read 0.10 and 2 reads 0.20 then 3 reads 0.30 for a split second then reads nothing.
Thanks anyhelp greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!
I dont wanna make this my new paper weight.
Watsaa, first off I have to say this is an awesome rom. I have tried other GB roms and this one just rocks. I am running Apex 7 update 1 and the only issue I had was everytime I returned to the launcher it seem to reload all the icons and widgets. Then i flashed Talon 2.2 and wow!! It runs much better and no more reloading of the launcher. Smooth as butter.

Hi all,
Tried to flash ICS 4.0.3. Had flashed CM7 and it was working fine but the flash was purely so I could put ICS on, installed the zip through CWM but now it is bootlooping. I see the Galaxy S original bootscreen then what I am presuming is the custom ICS bootscreen then alot of CWM text with the android robot then the android robot dead with a phone through his chest
I have tried removing the battery a couple of times.
I am a bit of a newbie so any help is much appreciated
What shouls I do?
BTW I can get to download mode so flashing through odin is always a last resort but if ICS is redeemable then thats much preferred!
Josh, you didn't listen to my advice on your last post did you?????
I'm too drunk now, hopefully someone will be able to help you.
However if I were you, I'd pull the battery, get back into recovery, flash ics again and then it should boot fine. This has happened every time I have flashed ics and is well documented in the threads.
And next time read up some more before flashing.

Could not figure out how to get back into recovery mode and I needed a quick fix so I reflashed Darky via Odin as I had the files handy, I may try ICS again another time.
Thanks anyway.

When your phone is Boot looping like that, just press and hold Vol up + Home + power for about 10 seconds. The phone will then restart into Recovery. From there reflash the ICS build again.
Have been told on another forum that it is fine to go straight from any GB rom to ICS simply by flashing the kernel then the rom then again the kernel. So I could therefore go straight from 10.2 RE to ICS?
Is this true as it seems to contradict the guide in OneCosmic's post?
Whatever Rom I flash, I always follow that particular Dev's instructions. That way you avoid Boot Loops or Force Close errors!
How long should the initial boot of ICS take? Successfully flashed it (I think) but it seems to be on the fancy moving panel bootscreen thing for quite a long time. Is this normal?
Edit: Up and running, thanks to everyone who helped
Could not download from the market so I read around and noticed it was a common problem and that you neede to wipe data/factory reset now I am stuck in a bootloop and cannot get into recovery mode is there an exact way to press and release the buttons or is it a case of: take out battery, vol up home and power and just hold?
so today i upgraded to gingerbread 2.3.5 on my samsung captivate or i-897. it was all fine until i started to try the teamhacksung build 16 for ICS. i was trying to install it and somehow my phone locked up on me. everytime i try to boot up my phone it goes to galaxy s and just sits. i can get it into recovery and download but then odin will not pick it up? help?
that rom has a Q and A page. go there to ask questions about it. NOT the DEV PAGE. Q&A.try searching the thread. and reading it.
100% chance your problem has been asked at least 10 times.
i went there and searched im sorry it hasnt been thats why i posted a thing. so stop being so rude and help someone out really.

You need to be in download mode for odin to pick it up. Start odin first then with your phone off, hold in your up/down volume keys and plug in your usb cable.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
telling you the proper place to post a question is not being rude. Im trying to help you find other people that have the same rom setup as you. they dont always look at other threads like this. they only care about THEIR ROM. so posting there, they would find your question... here they wont.
and the answer to your very first problem... if the rom install locks up (which it RARELY does) flash again.
**normally it "looks" like it locks up but the user is actually impatient, or the install script doenst program the status bar very well and it looks like its not doing anything although it is.
and first boot after flashing can take upto 10 mintues at boot animation.
ive done all of this plenty of times, ive even read how to create them. and i know you do as well. ive done all the odin i can but it got stuck at the galaxy s boot screen like the black one with white lettering and the i897 tag too. but it wont go past, and now wen i plugged it in it bricked so i have no idea wat to do now and i love this phone to death.

Can't you just flash something from recovery? You probably put some ROM on your sd at some point. And if not, you can do that with USB from recovery
Sent from my CM9 ICS i897 Captivate
Once you didn't get past the boot screen you should have three buttoned to recovery and flashed the from again. It happens quite often when you go to THS ICS or CM7. So if your not truly bricked which you shouldn't be unless you used a Odin with boot loaders then just used Odin and flash speed mod kernel or another kernel that will give you the correct cwm recovery. Then BEFORE trying to reboot flash the ICS ROM, then when it finishes flash it a second time BEFORE REBOOTING, then flash gapps, then reboot.
What happens is that the first time you try to go to cm7 or cm9 it basically flashes the kernel and cwm recovery from I can tell, then the second flash will be able to get you through all the boot up. Plus wait a while without touching it and it will come up. It takes a while on the first ever flash to it.

how can i put it on through recovery? and my usb debugging isnt on my fone just spazzed when i was loading up ics nd now its softbricked.
i actually just unbricked but i am still stuck at the galaxy s sgh-i897 screen thats black and white.
So basically I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate (i896) and it was running 2.1, so I decided to try and upgrade to the newest stock available for the captivate (which is 2.3.5). I had to use heimdall because I bought the phone used and it was rooted and possibly running a custom ROM so kies is not an option. When I put the phone in download mode the computer wouldn't recognize it (I'm on a Mac). I did alot of reading online and I couldn't find a solution. So I decided to flash a new ROM hoping that this would solve the problem.
So I flashed a random ICS ROM. But with this ROM I couldn't even access download mode. I tried a 3 button fix, I tried to use terminal to boot into download mode, and I tried to use ADB from my computer; nothing worked. So I figured I would flash another ROM (this time I used Hellybean) but when I tried to install it, a bunch of code ran on the screen and it said "installation aborted". Before attempting to flash this ROM I completely wiped the phone (i formatted the system from the mounts menu in CWM) and now the phone is showing the at&t logo, then going to black, then some code runs on the screen, then it goes black and starts the whole thing again.
I cant get to recovery or download mode.
Is it bricked? How do I fix this?
I don't know what I did wrong! any help would be appreciated.
P.s. I would really like to avoid building a jig because I feel like Im not too good at that kind of stuff....but if that's what it comes to...
Thanx in advance

I've tried all of those methods except for using a jig. Is it possible that while flashing a ROM my phone somehow lost download mode?
Also if all of those combos didn't work is it likely that a jig will work?
Looks like you started reading after you messed up the phone. Update instructions say clearly that you need GB bootloaders before you proceed to ICS or JB. You provide no information what exactly ROM you started from, what GB ROM you attempted to flash (with or without bootloaders), what exactly ICS you flashed after, what "some code" runs on the screen now, etc. It's a lot of guessing here. If bootloaders are messed up, than you won't be able to fix your phone at home. I have never seen a problem you describe, so wait for someone with more experience to stop by.
I got it going! All it needed was a jig and then I was able to flash stock GB with bootloaders.
Thanks for the help.
Good news! :good:
I have a Cappy and gingerbread boot loaders come in three flavours i897, i896 and i9000 and they're backwards compatible with froyo and éclair roms. Don't mix froyo and gb boot loaders though you will hard brick your device. I have i896(Canadian) boot loaders and when I flash kk4 [email protected] Odin gingerbread my "i896" boot screen is garbled image of pixels until I flash the proper param.lfs file to match. Hope this helps. BTW I have a jig as well and for all galaxy devices it's a must.
