Hi guys
i once had a HD7, i upgraded it with a 32GB Sandisk class 2 card. The card worked like a charm. Later i had to sell off the HD7 so i kept the card with me, safely in its own little box.
My big question is no card reader recognizes it, Blackberry bold 2 with OS 6 wont recognize it, Sony Ericsson Experia x10 with android 2.3 wont recognize it, even my cute little Motorola Defy with android 2.2.2 wont recognize it.
What am i doing wrong here? was i supposed to format it before pulling it out of HD7? Is there a way to bring it back to life?
please advise
Thanks in advance
partition
i am guessing you have a partition on their which is un-formatable, but you may be able to see and delete it in disk manager (in computer manager), not the same thing as right click / format. only a guess.
You are not doing anything wrong; Windows Phone 7 locks the microSD card with an encrypted passsword and there is nothing I know of that will break that encryption except for a Nokia phone with the Symbian operating system. Nothing else you put it in will even recognize the card, but the Symbian operating system is somehow able to reformat it and make it usable again.
You need to find a Nokia phone somewhere with the Symbian operationg system to reformat your card so you can use it again in other devices. I currently have two cards (16GB/32GB) that I need to have reformatted!
I've also heard that a digital camera can reformat them, but I don't know if that's true or not.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you stick a microSD card that was used in a WP7 handset in a PC, it doesn't even show in Windows Explorer, does it? I know if you put it in an Android phone, it says SD card not present.

HI guys
SWEET SUCCESS
the symbian trick worked like a charm
your a lifesaver @ Dennis
this card was taken out of a HD7 windows phone so the pc was not even recognizing it @ argentocruz
the best part is i used an old Nokia E90 to recognize and format the card, and now its running very smoothly in my Moto Defy

Hi guys, this happend today. My vario III suddenly can't find the memory card and my pc won't open it when I use card reader as well. All I can think of is I was using the card to transfer data between PCs yesterday several times and my PC won't read it at alst, but it worked ok with my Vario II(kaiser).
Help Please! How can I bring my card back??
Sorry, forget to mention that it a 8G Sandisk card.
I just posted the same problem and I also have a 8 GB from sandisk.
try to use the original SD card, see what happens..
My kaiser couldn't find it either..
I already contacted HTC customer service (an hour ago)
..
Edit:
I have a dutch T-Mobile MDA Vario with the original firmware.
Also a hard-reset doesnt help.
thanks a lot. I am waiting for your reply.
Hi
I had encountered similar problem before. My 8GB card was not detectable in my TytnII and shows empty in my laptop.
What I did is use the freeware program ""PC Inspector File Recovery" to recover all the loss files. What I believe is that the file table or something like that is corrupt but all files are still in card. DO NOT copy new files to the card if you intend to recover files from your card.
Thanks very much, I will give it a try now. keep finger crossed.
How does that happen? any ideas?
I have made a poll to see how many Kaisers have the same problem.

Cheap 8GB microSD cards usually are not true SDHC. They are a 4GB card reformatted to 8GB so the directory shows up that capacity but no data can be loaded to the extent of its capacity.
Buy another one, this time from a trusted seller and move on.
For the record, the card I got is original sandisk card.
Actually it happened once before for my 2GB sandisk card on hw6515. Am not sure if the corruption got anything to do with activesync as there there is no way to remove the sync other than directly unpluging the set from the laptop.
Unlike thumbdrive where we can select the option of removing thumbdrive.

How do you explain that my Kaiser also didn't read the original SD card? What do you advise as being a 'trusted seller'? The Sd card was cheap indeed..

Hi guys, I tried PC Inspector File Recovery and got the data I wanted back(there was 5~6 G on it but I only needed 2 M). My card come with N95 old version from O2 in UK, so I think it is a genuine branded sandisk card. After retrieving the data I tried to format my card and my PC allowed me to do that(it was impossible before I use PC Inspector), but after 5 mins it told me that windows can not format the card.
Anyway, I got the data back although the card is still dead.
Thanks a lot guys!
My 8G card would cost 50 pounds+ in the high street shops, don't understand why you guys say it's cheap....

Worst yet, you got a fake 8GB with the cost of a good one.
Why did you not try to get a replacement? High street shops will exchange it easily.

Have a card that is readable/writable/formattable on PC but does not even show up on the HTC. Any ideas?
bump
bumping thread because I am having the same issue. Few days ago my card slot died, tried many cards which all work on pc but dont come up on my tilt. I noticed theres a change in ram .03mb when I insert the card but if i go to storage memory in settings it will state not installed. Also inserting the card would bring the phone out of standby. I am guessing its a hardware issue and that theres a different switch or something that tells the phone that a card is in which is why it comes out of standby but the part that actually reads the card doesnt work, probably a loose wire or something. Can anyone post who has experience taking the kaiser apart, I am a hands on guy who wouldn't mind taking it apart to see what could be the problem.
p.s I also flashed roms/radios since this issue and that did not resolve it.
Wow. I'm also bumping because I have this same problem! Borys hit the nail on the head.
I've discovered the Kaiser is very intolerant of FAT filesystems with issues. I've had mine twice see the card, but no contents, even though it looked fine on my laptop.
I ran a filesystem check on it and both times it found some minor errors, and then it was fine.
No need for any special utilities, just run a disk check in Windows, fsck.vfat in Linux, etc..

Ah! Same here. I'm going to revive this thread since I'm having the same problem. I ran disk check, but it still wont work I'm trying to do a recovery for the files right now.
My 16gb sandisk card got corrupted yesterday and apparently it has something to do with this file EncFiltLog. I cannot copy anything to the card, cannot delete anything from the card and cannot format it. I found the solution in Blackstone forum...but as a kaiser owner I cannot benefit from it because we don't have DISK MODE on kaiser. Apparently it's been cooked in a few new roms for kaiser but Disk mode doesn't work. Has anyone successfully fixed this on kaiser? I,ve spend 60 pounds on the card and I don't feel like buying another one especialy if the problem might occur again.

PROBLEM:
Now, the problem all started when try to format the micro SDHC on the phone or on the PC with card reader.
Tried with differ format program also low level not worked.
DONT USE THESE!!! Waste of time!!!
SOLUTION:
So after doing some thinking about the situation, I figured that there was a problem with the card inserted and find the file EncFiltLog on it.
It is the WM 6.1 encription file. You can't delete, move files from or in to the SDHC.
The best way to solve this issue, as the hard-reset DOES NOTHING to fix this issue, would be to have windows hopefully find the connected device and format it. Here are the EASY steps which DO NOT involve using a dozen computers and has provided the same result EVERY time; which is a working on my 8gig memory in my HTC HD.
1. Connect the HD to the computer and select DISK DRIVE as the option on the on-screen popup on your phone. Don’t select ACTIVE SYNC. If you miss it, then go into your phone and press START>SETTINGS>CONNECTIONS TAB>USB to PC and select the bullet of DISK DRIVE and hit ok.
2. On your computer, (USING A WINDOWS XP MACHINE), go into your "My computer"
3. A window for will open with two columns.(If not, change the view to "Group") We are looking at the RIGHT side right now. In there is has three categories, and we are only focusing on ONE of them. LOOK for STORAGE which should be the center category.
4. Click with right to the desired "Storage device; A: ; D: E;", it will take a minute or two depending on your computer speed and environment to populate your hard drive and connected memory devices.
5. You will eventually see your PHONE internal storage listed. IT WILL TAKE SOME TIME BECAUSE YOUR PHONE INTERNAL STORAGE IS CORRUPTED!
***BE SURE WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT IS IN FACT YOUR PHONE AND NOTHING SOMETHING ELSE LIKE YOUR MAIN HARD DRIVE OR SOME OTHER STORAGE DEVICE WITH IMPORTANT FILES ON THERE***
****I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU FORMAT THE WRONG DEVICE***
6. Choose format and let it format the drive. This should also take a few minutes. Select FAT32 and name is whatever you want! Let this finish COMPLETLY!

I received a corruption error a few months back because windows media player decided to sync my media files to my storage card. what error did you receive when you attempted to format it? I do not want to sound arrogant but when you placed the card into the micro sd/sd adapter did you unlock the adapter?

Yes that was the first thing i did. I tried formatting it on my laptop with 2 different apps and also on my PPC without success. I'm able to copy about 90% of my files to my laptop's harddrive but cannot save anything to the card or format it. The problem occured yesterday when I was creating a new Word document on my PPC... it wouldn't save to storage card and some error window poped out. Since then the phone has been a mess. It was barely usable because I had a lot of programs on my memory card which were used all the time by the ppc, had to hard reset and it's fine now of course until I try to browse files on my card.
I'm guessing that you didn't have any problems formatting your card?
Windows native formatting program gave this error: Windows cannot complete formatting
SDFormatter: the memory card is write-protected. please release the write protect switch"(have tried formatting the card with the switch in both positions to no avail)
some ppc formatting app "told" me to check whether any programs placed on SDHC card are being used by the system at the moment
I had the same problem with my 8 GB SDHC card. I spend few days trying to find solution. Most likely you card is gone for good. There is only one thing that I didn’t try and that maybe could work is to format card on Linux. They said it helps in some of the cases. Good luck with your card but be ready for the worst.

Yes this doesn't look too good....I think the only thing I can do now is to look for a Kaiser rom with working DISK MODE and try to use HD users solution.

Perhaps this is different than I've experienced, but multiple times my SD card has become unreadable on my Tilt, and I just run a disk check on it, it finds weird/bad stuff, then it's fine again when it's done.
Not sure what's going on with that, as I've never made any sense of the chkdisk files that are created that are parts of the bad data.

Thanks all, I've tried that Panasonic formatting program hell I have tried at least 10 other programs for formatting, repairing and checking(chkdisk didn't help either) cards none of them have worked. And the most annoying thing is that I sent an email to sandisk on thursday last week and they haven't replied yet...I'm going to claim warranty replacement.
Do you have a digital camera? If so try and format with that as i had a simlar problem again a SanDisk to which the computer would not format, the phone would not format yet i used Fuji DSLR to format and it worked.

Thanks.
Ok looks like my dad has a SD camera one problem though it is some ancient device it's not SDHC capable. Will it work and if it will, won't I waste my card in some way?

Sounded like last ditch efforts to me
to bad ther is no followup on this matter, but i would advise a digital camera to. it always helped me out. lowlevel format on a nikkon dslr!
Have you tried this little baby.... http://www.cnetx.com/format/download.asp
The trial allows you to format without purchasing, but it's worth buying for the next time it happens - I was stuck with all other programs not working until this one.
Good luck.
Ps. Sorry if it doesn't work and I get your hopes up!!
Had a similar problem 2 days ago with my micro SD SanDisk Class 2 8Gb that I use on my HD. Became corrupted after trying to erase some movies while connected to my PS3.
Tried this: www[dot]sdcard[dot]org/consumers/formatter [didn't work: Micro SD write protected]
Tried GParted on Ubuntu, didn't work!
Tried MiniTool Partition Wizard and other XP formatting tools, didn't work!
Tried formatting with the SD inside the Blackstone and connected to PC, didn't work!
Got VERY frustrated and bought a new cheap micro SD 8Gb class 6+adaptor [1300Yen, about 15Eur]
Now I followed the Digital camera trick, and formatted the corrupted microSD in less than 5 sec!!!
I think it doesn't matter what phone you use the SD in, any relatively recent digital camera will do the trick for you.
THANK YOU
If this is in the wrong section I apologise
Hi, well my milestone started getting really slow and crashing,
the back touch button at the bottom panel then stopped working and then the SDHC card could not be read by the phone.
I sent the phone off to be repaired, however the microSD won't connect to the computer. Searching on google has brought me no help at all (just those rubbish 'tech-help sites' which copy and paste from each other...)
the computer will add a drive (unused drive letter of D) which is shaded out, and says
'please insert a disk into drive D'
So I think that it has broken. Is there any way of recovering data? there's photos and alot of stuff on it.
thanks very much,
Ross
What you probably need (unless your card is really damage), is to format it, anyway if you search on the net there are some free programs that may help you to recover data from an SD (I don't remember which ones, you have to search them by yourself..)
If you need to format it, sometimes is just enough connect the SDcard and disconnected again and let windows see it as a new drive, then it will ask you automatically to format it.
I recommend (to avoid problem like this in the future) to do the FULL format not the quick one.
If with windows won't work, you can use a software to partition hard drives, like this two (the best actually):
http://download.cnet.com/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html (support linux partitions for app2sd)
or:
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm
I recommend you to try first with Partition Wizard Home Edition, I had your same
problem a couple of times and this sofware always helped me, and, if in the future you are planning to flash new roms and modifiy your phone, just as a suggestion, is always better backup your SD, on your PC or on a pen drive.
Good luck, and let me know if you will succeed..
Thanks for that, I tried this out, but unfortunately none of it could help me
My SD card won't connect at all, the drive appears but it won't show a card at all, even in the partition tool, or the windows control panel, disk manager
thanks,
Ross
Is it a 16gb card?
On windows xp, you may have a problem seeing it.
You would need a card reader that can read 16gb sd cards if this is the case.
I know this because I've had a devil of a time making an ext2 partition on my 16gb card this week
I finally managed to do it but nothing I did made windows xp see the card through an older card reader. I had to keep the card in the phone and use the phone as a card reader
it's an 8gb card, and I use windows 7 sorry, I bought a 16gig one as a replacement, and it reads fine, I just want to get the data, I can't even re-format cause it won't recognise it :/

Hello, I can't seem to find anything related to this on google or your wonderfull website ( thanks to you folks i was able to root my htc desire and install cyanogenmod, as well as unlock it from the network), any way to the point, I switched network providers because ive had it with telus, long story short, i went to bell and had to get a new phone, so i tried this htc hd7, n i kick myself in the teeth, but im stuck with it now... n now that i can use my desire on any network, i popped my bell sim in and am using that, so, i want to use the 16 gb class 4 sandisk sd card out of the hd7 in my htc desire, windows doesnt recognize it, nor does kubuntu, and nor does the format utility windows comes with, the format fails... and of course the phone wont read it or format it through recovery or in OS, ive also tried a program called low level format tool, it sees it, but results in multiple errors when formatting, any thoughts?
you need a Nokia phone to format it. The SD card is locked.
Does it need to be a specific model? The only nokia device i have is an air card for my laptop and theres no memory card settings, i think i have a couple buddies that own nokia phones though, damn windows phail 7

You must have not looked on Google very hard:
"format WP7 SD card"
Actually, thats the first thing i searched, which is also how i discovered the low level format utility, you can have absolute faith i've searched anything i could think of and explored multiple options that i could think of, including a kodak easy share c183 (fairly new digital camera) and multiple sd card recovery applications designed for digital cameras, ive tried using linux and both windows/linux OS disks, im thinking, now that the bootloader has been exploited for the the hd7, if i can port either kubuntu mobile or some third party android build to it, i would gain access to the card, then mess around with that, but theres gotta be some way i can format this bugger. ive also come across the thread that includes using the nokia phone, but i dont have one. this is the only other thing i could find besides the llft, is there anyone else out there that has wanted to use there 16 gigger out of the hd7 for some other device after upgrading to a 32gb card? i have skimmed these forums as well and turned up nothing
well i just came across this post and aim on the same boat... i have 4 16g and going crazy i will hate to see this 4 16 sd go to trash... just cause mocosoft have play bad with us.....
ps just like guitarjunkie i have try all i can think-off
well im going to render this question unasnwerable i think for the time being, until we can find an application that works, if there wll ever be such a time, i will keep posted if i find one, thank you almostinsane for your time and input about the nokia phone, and to my boys from microsoft, blast you all, creators of wp7 to eternal damnation! @#$%&*(random curse words) power to the linux community!
Hmmm my friend formatted his memory, but no longer has the software that he did that with... =\
Try this:
http://www.pendriveapps.com/format-fat32-larger-than-32gb/
If it failed try:
http://tokiwa.qee.jp/EN/Fat32Formatter/
Try the whole re-initialization thing...
If both failed, try to find something else which can destroy the partition table for the memory, then rebuild it using Disk Manager.

I have several retired Windows Phone devices from family and friends, screen cracked, battery inflated, etc. Now most of their owners have moved on, and the parts don't even look useful anymore, except for one part: the internal storage. I want to harvest the SD cards from a mix of Windows Phone 7 / Windows Phone 8 / 8.1 devices.
I know that with Windows Phone 7, the file system was LOCKED in a way that not many card readers / devices even recognized. Taking an internal SD card out of a damaged Windows Phone 7 device gives a perfectly normal looking 16GB class 4 microSD card... that can not be accessed, erased, deleted, nuked, formatted, or used, by anything. I've tried countless friends phones, tablets, computers, readers, UBCD, DBAN, utilities, tools, you name it. I have also looked high and low, and have never seen one of the fabled Nokia devices in the wild that can gently format these locked-up microSD cards.
My question for this forum is does Windows Phone 8 also lock the internal SD card filesystem in the same way that WP7 did? Can I extract and harvest the internal 32GB SD cards of some Lumia 920s for use in other devices? I know that 32GB microSD cards are cheap, but that's not the point. I just don't like to see these 32 GB cards go to waste. I'm hoping that I can just take a hammer to my Lumia 920s and pry out the SD card, format it with a card reader, then drop it into my 1520, my tablet, my wife's Galaxy Note 2, etc for extra storage.
A random thought I had was: could it possibly help if I subscribe my company email to the Lumia 920 before smashing it? My company's policy enforces full-disk encryption. I'm curious if the full-disk encryption will help the card be "formattable" as I definitely won't care about the data that's contained on the card. I don't have any dev-unlocked windows phones, and have never sideloaded anything, but I would be open to it if I could get these SD cards to be useable. Some of the WP8 devices turn on and could possibly be manipulated, some can not.
Any help is appreciated!
P.S. - I also have a stash of 16GB SD cards from WP7 phones that I have almost given up on using, but if someone has knowledge about wiping those, I would love to hear it. I have no working WP7 phones, so the solution can't be from any app sideloading.
wp 7 cards can be formatted with a few old Nokias : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242071
wp8 cards aren't looked at all , you can just pull them out and use ( not even the need to format them.

Thanks for the help, ceesheim.
Just to provide an update on this, in case anyone else gets a similar idea. So far I've taken apart a Verizon HTC 8X, and a Nokia Lumia 920, and neither of them had internal MicroSD cards. Both had eMMC implementations, which mean they are not removable. My Nokia Lumia 920 had a Toshiba THGBM5G8A4JBAIM which is a 32GB eMMC chip.
The lesson here is that microSD cards are cheap, and harvesting them from old phones is not worth it!
