Does the NOOK eat 32GB?
32GB is supported and is the max that can be added.
the class of the card really matters? If I use an 32GB class 10 on Nook it will be better than use a class 4? The nook really takes any advantage of a faster uSD card?
Class 4 and 6 Sandisk are best for use on Nook. It is the small block read and write performance that are important. That aspect doesn't factor into what Class rating a card gets which is more about large sequential access.
There are reports of stability issues when using Class 10 cards.

I have a general question about using crystaldiskmark for these tests. I used 3 different micro-sd cards that were varying brands, sizes, and classes when performing each test. The 2 write speeds that everyone seems to highlight ended up being .02 or .01 something for each card. Is that possible? I figure something was up with my computer. I'm new to testing cards like this, but these scores are so much lower than everyone else's, some even using the same cards as I am. I did the test with the internal micro-sd card reader on my PC. Am I doing something wrong? Even running the crystal test on my hard drive produced low scores in those areas.
First of all what brand and class of sd cards are you testing? Non-sandisk cards have almost all been shown not to have fast enough small block random write ratings to run CM7 satisfactorily.
Several people posting here had observed issues with sd card readers built in to their laptops/computers and used an external reader with better results.

yeah I went through that whole thread before I posted as a reference and to see how to test. One of the cards was an 8gb sandisk, class 2. Another was a 2gb sandisk, class 2. Third was a 16gb something (in my phone right now and don't want to pull) that is class 10 or 6..All gave me the same results, which I would think is strange. For what it's worth, cm7 runs fast and smooth booting from my 8gb class 2 sandisk. But seeing those test results would say otherwise I would think. The 2gb sandisk booted and ran cm7 fine as well.
One thing you might want to check is if crystaldiskmark is set at 2 test runs, 50mb test size. I did a 5 test run, 500mb test size and got a really bad small block random write score around .100.
If your CM7 is running fine, then I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm wondering if my 8gb class 6 Transcend SD card is slow, or my phone is.
When using J Benchmark I get like 1.4 Megabyte/s write and 2.6 Megabyte/s read.
This is slow for a class 6 card.
Could some of you run J Benchmark and write their results. Please also write which class card you have (and maybe which brand).

I got 1.75 and 2.06 on a Sandisk 16gb class 2.
I have a class 2 16GB Sandisk and I got 2.03mb write & 2.66mb read. Ive been looking to go up to a class 4 or 6 32GB but I'm wondering if my N1 would use the extra speed??
Edit: tested internal NAND and got 0.44mb for write and 2.43mb for read.. is that normal??

I thought I remember reading an article awhile back that many of these cards aren't what they claim to be for class and speed.
How do we really know? It is just a manfucturers claims, what law says they need to prove the actual class and throughput? And if there is a law, who is going to challenge them?
How do you change the buffer size for an SD card - or is this just a feature of whatever benchmark program you use?

If you test at 2kb then it's really slow. The internal nand is even slower. Test at least 4kb to get a better picture or before writing off your sd card

True, but for me I get the same results for copying files to my SD card from my PC, as I get using the 2kb buffer size setting.
What kind of speeds do you get when transfering a file to SD from PC?

I get the speed for 4kB (about 2MB/s) as opposed to the dismal score for 2kB. Wish I'd get the 8kB speeds (almost 6MB/s which is what my class 6 is supposed to do). One thing to note is supposedly Froyo broke something and made transferring over USB slower.
I've noticed that copying files over wifi is somewhat quicker than using the direct USB connection. A 223MB file takes about than 20 second more over USB.

as with everyone...i get slower speed with 2 kb buffer. 1.5 mb/s write and 2.5mb/s read.
I have noticed one thing though, usb transfer is slow with my nexus one. If I use a card reader then its pretty impressive. So I guess the problem is not with our sd cards but with froyo. I may be wrong.

I'm not sure if the class would make a real difference in a smartphone... In a DSLR camera sure but in a phone, not so much!
But obviously it greatly affects the time it takes to write data on the card itself (Class 4: 4MB/s Class 10: 10MB/s).
I am myself looking to buy a 32gb card and my choices are either Kingston or Patriot.

I personally use a SanDisk 32GB Class 4 MicroSDHC card(the same one that comes with the HTC Thunderbolt). With audio/video playback it's always smooth(never any audio/video glitches) and pictures/video recording start up right away.

i do remember once reading an article about a higher read/write speed means also a higher random access lag, which is bad if you are looking to run apps off of your mSD
I was having problems with a Patriot 16GB class 10 microsd in my Incredible S. Video recording would shut down after a couple seconds. Weird stuttering in the OS.
Patriot acknowledged a problem with their 32gb class 10 in Android and Windows 7 phones. Might've affected some of their 16gb.
Here's my CrystalDiskMark results for the Patriot:

Random Read 512KB : 18.107 MB/s

I switched to a Sandisk 32gb Class 2. No problems.

Sequential Read : 14.121 MB/s
Sequential Write : 5.964 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 13.305 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 5.582 MB/s
Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 1.097 MB/s [ 267.7 IOPS]
Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 0.484 MB/s [ 118.2 IOPS]
Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 0.873 MB/s [ 213.1 IOPS]
Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 0.161 MB/s [ 39.3 IOPS]
Based on other people's results, higher classes have really poor Random Write 4KB speeds. Not sure if that matters in Android.
I'd recommend getting a lower class Sandisk. Lower class Sandisk usually perform at a higher sequential write speed than their stated class, and still have good random write speed.

1) class 12 will not support for mobile phones
2) class 10 had made some devices to go weird
3) class 6 would b the best choice to select for its value for money and performance
4) i will not recommend u to buy a class 4
5) there will not be any huge difference in read/ write speed whn compared between class 6 nd class 10

Initial benchmarks show it is much quicker than all the other microSD's I have in larger writes, but is actually slower than a class 4 in the very small writes, so it remains to be seen if it speeds up day to day useage. Capacity is as advertised and comes with a nice compact USB adapter, overall, very pleased as I can now fit all of my music on it

At what class number on the G1 will I hit the bottleneck of the hardware?

it seems that a card will report it's class to the reader and it is then upto the application to decide if it meets it's requirements.
without pulling apart my G1 I have not been able to determine what the controller is to see find it's specs to see if there is a limit to what it can deal with in terms of through put.
I would like to think that the bottle neck is the card, and that a higher class card would be faster
a simple way of looking at it is that even if the G1 doesn't support 10MB/s
a card which does support 10MB/s is more likely to sustain 6MB/s better than a class 6

I would look at the relative cost of class 6/10
if they are not disproportionate then I would go class 10
but if class 10 is 2 or 3 times the price, I would go class 6 (unless I had cash to throw away)

I think I have a Kingston class 4 (possibly 6, i'm not sure) and my max was around 5.x mb write and 19.x mb read with SD Tools. That was with 2048kb sd cache.
that's not too much better than mine, the stat i posted above was 128, i got about the same as you with 2048.
It seems like you have to make the jump to class 10 in order to get decent speeds on an android phone.
if you take out the sd card and look at it, it will say the class inside a circle directly on the card.

i have a 16gb class 10 and it writes @ 5mb/s and reads 17mb/s between a class4 and a class6 but im using apps to ext and swap
I have a MT3G with a 4GB class 2 and i ran SD tool twice and saw a small speed diffrence, the first is with stock 128 cache and second i temporarily set to 1024 cache

run a few times and it will average out
on a few runs I get (approx)
write 6.5
read 18.5
this is a class 6
so
some class hedge bets and they are classX+
regardless of class read is the same
so for swap class matters, but you may get lucky
for apps2sd , it probably doesn't make much difference
BUT this is just one benchmark program, it could be flawed
maybe a simple script with time would be better, but then you have the memory caching etc to consider
still it is interesting so far, certainly the writes seem to fit(ish)

could be a hw limit
OR your card was just a re-badged china thing
try without swap running, and the app on internal
that could be getting in the way
the bm app writes to /mnt/sdcard/

I don't use no modified cache, no swap.
Using 2048kb cache:
Write speed = 6.3 MB/s
Read speed = 18.3 MB/s

whats the best micro sd card to use with the xperia z ?
I know this have probably been asked before
ive seen class 4 cards all the way up to class 10 cards
does the class even matter ???
I did seem to have an issue playing films with my 32GB Class 4 but since I've bought the SanDisk Ultra 64GB Class 10 it's been just fine.
If I am correct, 4.2.2 supports 64GB officialy.

The SD Association defines standard speed classes indicating minimum performance to record video. Both read and write speeds must exceed the specified value. These are defined in terms of suitability for different applications:[40]
Class 2 for SD video recording
Class 4 and 6 for high-definition video (HD) to Full HD video recording,
Class 10 for Full HD video recording and consecutive recording of HD stills
UHS Speed Class 1 for real-time broadcasts and large HD video files
The specification defines these classes in terms of performance curves that translate into the following minimum read-write performance levels on an empty card:[41]
Speed Classes 2, 4, and 6 assert that the card supports the respective number of megabytes per second as a minimum sustained write speed for a card in a fragmented state. Class 10 asserts that the card supports 10 MByte/s as a minimum non-fragmented sequential write speed.[41] By comparison, the older "×" rating measured maximum speed under ideal conditions, and was vague as to whether this was read speed or write speed.
The host device can read a card's speed class, unlike the earlier "×" speed ratings. A device can warn the user if the card reports a speed class that falls below an application's minimum need.[41]
The speed class rating does not totally characterize card performance. Different cards of the same class may vary considerably while meeting class specifications. In addition, speed may vary markedly between writing a large amount of data to a single file (sequential access, as when a digital camera records large photographs or videos) and writing a large number of small files (a random-access use common in smartphones). One study found that, in this random-access use, some Class 2 cards achieved a write speed of 1.38Mbit/s, while all cards tested of Class 6 or greater (and some of lower Classes; lower Class does not necessarily mean better small-file performance), including those from major manufacturers, were over 100 times slower.[42]

Not only, JB support 64GB any version, i'm using a Micro SDXC Classe 10 64Go UHS-1 Grade 1 70MB/s since i have my Xperia Z and it's works perfectly.

I was using a Sandisk 32gb class 10 ultra. But it suddenly yesterday stopped working. Was working fine. Now can't even get the pc to read it, how can that happen.
So, I just got the Z through T-Mobile and am (casually) looking into getting an SD car for it. Should I hold out until the device is upgraded to 4.2 before getting a 64gig card? I'm assuming it wouldn't be compatible beforehand.
I suppose I could look into rooting the Z as well... (I'm kinda hesitant about that, though)

Bad SD card?
I bought a generic 64gb class 10 microSD card from ebay, great seller, great reviews. but it seems that my Xperia corrupts it once in a while and wants to format it. I started it with exfat, but then learned that FAT32 is better, so did that.. but the same result, after a week , the SD card just crashed and corrupted and wanted a format, as the phone stopped reading it.
Is there anything that i'm missing, or shall i just chalk it up to bad sd card and get a sandisk or transend branded card?
It's not your card, it's a fault with the Xperia z, my class 10 SanDisk 32GB got corrupted two days ago as well, lots of folk reporting the same, seems class 4 is ok, any one confirm that?
