Hey guys, appreciate the work you guys have done here. Am running stock rom on my galaxy mini, still new to android after ages spent as a wm6.5 lurky hence taking my time before trying to go gingerbread. I have tried mx player, mobo player, qq player rockplayer yet I still can't get •Mkv clips to play well. Video is always choppy though sound is fine, in wm apps had the option to reduce quality unlike in android. Any ideas on how I could improve playback?
yes, the only solution for your problem is buying an upgrade phone.
The Adreno 200 GPU and the 600MHZ CPU is not up to the task of playing any file with higher resolution than 480p. Maybe some MPEG4 files, but H.264 not possible.
MX Player is one of the best players in terms of hw acceleration. If this can't handle well, you are out of luck.

Hmmm bummer, guess I'll start eyeing the galaxy S soon, this happens to be my first crack at android already am suffering from the smartphone upgrade fever! That voice in my head that keeps telling me to upgrade just won't let up! With that said the galaxy mini is still quite cool, for a starter.
Well then whats the max recommended benchmark video resolution I should try to play? I remember having issues with an .mkv 480p big bang episode. whats the highest resolution any of you have played with reasonable results?
You can install tweaked chainfire drivers along with overclocked kernel to see if its working
i think if you oc it will work much more smoother
What is the resolution of the videos ur trying to play?
Convert them 240x320 and try.
This works best for me..though I don't remember how well.mkv plays but I tried various formats in this res a long time back and they all seemed to play well.
Try on both mobo and Qq...
Hmm I'll give Mx a try.
---edit----
Damn this thread is months old!
Haha dont worry about it being a month old, we still read it. Converting videos sounds tideous

ya but that is the best way to get most of the hdvideos to work, afaik.
i use total video converter.
cannot expect a 720 or a 1080p to play on mini without down converting it
btw ya i've had a lil trouble with .mkv, i prefer avi.
.avi always delivers in my mini, its my preferred format, had a chance to fiddle with a pals galaxy s and galaxy s2 and damn I was so freaking blown out of the water! Right now am thinking upgrade, just as soon as I rob a bank to afford one! just rooted galaxy mini, was considering overclock options but am not sure that would do much improvements. Oh and what about CHAINFIRE3D? Do you guys think it can enable smoother mkv play on mx video player or does it only work for games?
Sent from my GT-S5570 using XDA App
I think Cf3d works only with games.
Sent from my GT-S5570 using Tapatalk
Is that an expert opinion or an educated guess?
Sent from my GT-S5570 using XDA App
I'm not sure abt cf3d cuz it has lots of options..and if u use it properly(knowing what does wat),it mite have some effect.
head over to that thread.
I actually have chainfire installed, just freaked out by the warning it gave just before I install the openGL driver so am still growing a pair before activating it . Read the forum and pretty much still I can't tell heads or tails about what it really does. And also from the looks of things it seems to be complimented better by overclocking abilities on your phone. I have been using stock froyo for a while and now am feeling ready to graduate to the big boys league, just can't decide yet between going for a stock gingerbread rom or cyanogen rom. As time goes am sure more solutions will come out to tackle this problem coz .mkv is a pretty important format these days especially in phones coz of its small storage size requirements, wish android and samsung had taken more time to make it more compatible with their hardware and software respectively

i only bought the lg 2x for 3 weeks, and this is sad to watch.
However, i don't see the point of the gpu being such powerful, since android does not have any thing to push the gpu at all besides benchmark. This is a good way to make myself feel better.
I would like to know is there difference between Tegra 2 cpu vs Exynos cpu at all?? besides Exynos gpu being so much more powerful than Tegra 2?
Thanks

oh thats just terrible
Now my O2x are completely useless - it will just stop functioning im sure
No wait - thats not right - whats happening, it still works ? My games still play, I can still read the news, I can still do all the things I did yesterday.
It's just a benchmark - does it really matter that much ?
Those are just numbers in my opinion.
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App
I might have wrong, but that benchmark is made for mobile gpus and tegra 2 is not like normal mobile gpus it's more like a desktop gpu. A eight core gpu can't be beaten by a quad core or?
Tegra is our one, probably futile, hope of future proofing our phones.
Sent from my LG-P990 using Tapatalk
Don't expect Tegra to lead benchmarks for a while until mobile graphics are more geared towards immediate mode rendering (Stuff more like PC graphics.). Everyone else uses Tile-based rendering. I believe NVidia did this to avoid changing the rendering (which changes the drivers even more and etc) once they reach "console-level" graphics. The Tegra 2 will excel in a few things. Don't expect it to be the best performer for now. Expect it to be a capable one.
Don't forget. SGS II is capped to 60fps and we won't know what it's truly capable of
I've seen several gaming videos and the tegra walks all over the Orion. I do agree that push for tegras are the last hope for a unified gaming platform and I think it will work. Nvidia has this backed and will see it through.
i am really sick of the fact every android phone has its own different games on each platform. same game cant be run on different android phones. this is stupid.
its one of the reasons i like Nvidia. they are trying to do something good here for once. you see all those samsung galaxy S2 hardware. but where all the games ? those same games i can play on nexus S. with good frames too. however with nvidia and tegra 2, the users are getting exclusive games that can take advantage of the hardware. thats nice for a change.
let the galaxy S2 owners have fun with there powerful phone on paper. at the end of the day. the Tegra 2 owners are the people who are getting the best looking games.
i am not saying i hate S2. because i will buy it as soon as i can. i love super amoled and the techs for the phone. but if i want a pure gaming phone. tegra 2 wins hands down. not because its the most powerful. but because there are exclusive games that take advantage of that GPU.

No their not, they're taking games already under development which Android users were going to see anyway regardless of nvidia's involvement and paying the developers off to make them exclusive titles, this is a bad thing as most Android users will lose out because of it.

this video shows at how the flash player performance is on web browsing watching a video and at this point watching an anime on both phones
so you can see that samsung galaxy with exynos and with 1.2ghz against lg2x nvidia tegra2 with 1ghz and lg optimus 2x seems for me faster for playing videos at this ..!i wanna only know if lg use stock 2.2.2 at this video against samsung galaxy s2 2.3.3 stock
lets compare those two videos and see that there are no differences between samsung s 2 and lg2x
and again dont forget...lg 2x has stock 2.2.2 rom
samsung galaxy s 2 has gingerbread 2.3.3 wich supposed to be faster..
think that when lg 2x will get official ginger 2.3.4 at this summer

True, and Nvidia is causing fragmentation by using their own compression formats. Afaik Mali supports the one and only standard format, but that don't help much when Nvidia is paying off devs to use their proprietary stuff. Yeah not very techical i know, but check out the SGS2 thread for more info.

Hi everyone
atlast i bought a P1010 but i regret so bad
I use it for web surfing, chat, facebook and watching videos
all works great except videos
I know it's weak in that spot but i read in forum that some guys increased quadrant scores by using oneclicklagfix and setcpu apps
I want to know how effective are those methods?
can I watch full HD (1080p) videos if I oclf my tab?
what about overclocking? is there any way?
please help me
thanks in advance
Hi, answer no!
But you can watch with no issues 720 with no issues, and honestly this is a better format for the size hehe if the only reason is less file size. Now if you wanted it cause you can hook up to your tv to play then you are out of luck.
thank you so much for the answer
actualy i can play 720p but high bitrate mkv files are blury and pixelate
what does overclocking do exactly?
there is no lag in running apps out of the box and it doesn't improve video playbacks
why people overclock p1010?
what does oclf do?
I have used mobo and mvideo players for mkv files and had no issues with lag before and after rooting and over clocking.
The stock player would not play them for me but then i had a faulty device as well and sammy are replacing it for me.
Overclocking makes the device snapier for most apps but effects battery life.. So depending on what you use it for and how often you can get to a charger will depend.. When get new one next week will tell you if battery performance was solely due to Overclocking >:~}

yes I use mobo for all videos format, it's the best imo, but when playing mkv highbitrates sound and video are unsync
vplayer can play them but the quality sucks
I wish there was a way I could overclock GPU
Chainfire3D 1.9 (eu.chainfire.cf3d)
CPU Master Free 1.5.1
and make sure device is rooted, these help me, and am sure there are others out there >:¬}
thanks again
they say Chainfire isn't related to video playback

Hello,
I just got a "Player" called Samsung galaxy player 4.0 which is basically the Samsung galaxy s without the phone antenna.
It has android 2.3.5 and the browser is extremely SMOOTH, iphone like!
Plus skype video call is much better in quality.
Skype apart, why is the browser so much worse on the lg with a GPU like the tegra 2? Is this all because of LG non-optimization?
you got that player for optimus 2X?
Also i was wondering the same about LG and optimization... my previous phone was a samsung galaxy mini with ginger 2.3.4 and it was smoother at browsing and at menus than O2X ... even now that im using CM7..weird
Actually, LG did not make any browser tweaks to make browsing smoother. It's just normal android performance.
Samsung did some black magic on their phones that makes the browser extra smooth.
I would suggest you try opera mobile that does not use the default tweaks, and see how smooth that is, on both phones.
Afaik its because it has gpu accelerated browser.
Sent from my Optimus 2X using xda premium
Bingo.
Samsung built H/W acceleration into their browser.
The o2x has gpu flash acceleration so bleh!
Iv never owned a Samsung android phone so i cant compare but browsing is pretty dam fast on the o2x so maybe your have been spoiled.
If it's a different browser, one could use tile rendering (I think that's what it's called.). I don't know the geeky specifics but I believe it means the phone doesn't render the whole page, just blocks of it that you see at the current zoom level. It's also how the iPhone renders the web pages. Hence why it's so smooth. Hardware acceleration doesn't solve everything
Have you tried Opera Mobile?
it's much better then stock browser,
but still, not quite smooth as i9100.
And if you don't like opera then you could try dolphin browser hd.

I had only problems with firefox. It needs much more work. I use Opera and I dont have any problems with browsing. Everything is pretty smooth.
I meant the beta, they improved it and the desktop sync is unique, I want that feature. Aurora nightly has better GUI but no sync.

why is it ridiculous when i'm telling you that that's how it was for me?
on stock froyo/gingerbread.. 720p youtube playback on the LG browser is lagged.. frames skipped everywhere. and it was the same on opera/dolphin hd/ff with the latest adobe flash installed.. 480p was perfectly smooth though
my friend's SGS gingerbread (wasn't sure if it was custom or stock) played 720p with no lag at all in the browser
i am telling you exactly what happened.. this is on stock stock. no mods. just pure out of the box vanilla.
Is the flash player still gpu accelerated, when it's updated from market?

Hello all
I have a pretty big problem with my nook.
Im running latest Mirage cm7 Kang build, web browsing at 600-1000 mhz ondemand, and youtube videos (desktop website version) are very very very laggy. Sound is fine, but they show at 1-2 fps.
I've tried flash player 11, and flash player 10.3, 10.3 is a bit better but still very laggy. I even tried changing browser, but the problem persist in dolphin hd and even in dolphin mini. Is it supposed to be like this or is a flash player version specific for nook out there? Also could someone please link me a working HQ youtube apk?
im pretty disappointed by these performance, because my lg optimus one, which is arm v6, plays youtube videos be it on website or app very smootly, and it has a much slower cpu. Please someone help me

How can i have a daft nook color? if it turn on and work well for everything, it's something on the software side... by the way antutu is 27xx, seems pretty legit and normal for this device.. I dont think it's some hardware fault

I hope it's only a rom problem do you mind running an antutu benchmark and posting here your scores? Maybe i can see if i score low in video or cpu in respect to yours and find out if it's an hardware problem.. returning it it's not an option for me, i live in italy and i bought it refurbished from ebay, it would take forever and i dont know if im even in warranty..

I'm running the 7/30 CM7.2 MiRaGe build. My NC is overclocked to 1.2GHz using the Interactive governor. YouTube videos play well at non-HQ setting. My Quadrant score on 1st run is 2026. I haven't made any real attempts to optimize performance, as I'm more concerned about battery life.
You could try creating a bootable uSD card using a different firmware version, or a clean version of what you've got installed to see if it's something specific to your configuration. The NC is certainly up to playing YouTube videos with reasonable performance.
Ok, i did some more testing... I ran a quadrant and scored 2152 with conservative... However I noticed that the 3d fps are somewhat low in respect to some other devices with the same or lower specs. I think all nook are like this, everything else is ok.
Then i 've done some more testing with videos and YouTube. Turns out that the choppy performance was because some videos default at 480p. At 360p videos are watchable, even if they lag a little bit (in particular if I don't disable the adds banners). But I found and old YouTube apk in which hq work, and here playback is silk smooth and load times are fast.
So I'm happy to say that my nook seems perfectly fine , thanks to all for the time and for the resolution tip.. I completely forgot about that lol
Is the "old YouTube apk" available to the public???

Hi
I updated to to 4.0.3 from Gingerbread. I was initially very happy as it felt like a brand new phone.
But now I am facing 2 problems:
1. Video files are really really choppy and it goes out of sync and eventually hangs the phone.... I am using BS Video Player app for videos. In Gingerbread I was able to play even HD (720p) movies quite easily but now much smaller videos are not playing properly. I have tried other (including the default one) players also
Have you guys faced similar problem? Is there solution you could suggest?
2. Camera won’t start sometime. Sometimes it starts and then it works fine.
Is there any solution for this?
I can kind of answer your first question, for some reason some video codec supports are dropped when going to ICS+ (I had a 720p recording of a science experiment that played wonderfully on GB, but couldn't even play on ICS and above). So your solution is third-party video players (I personally like DicePlayer, but all work well).
As for the camera, that's probably a bug in the rom you're using.

I am using a 3rd party player (BS Player) only, Earlier it played everything fine. Now it's really choppy and tries SW mode after struggling in hardware mode for sometime, then it hangs.... And with default it's always saying that the video can't be played after few minutes.

Some ROMs/kernels use bigger part of the RAM for the apps, on costs of the video recording. As you didn't provide info about which rom and kernel do you use, it would be best to check the source threads of their developers and read what other people write about it

That should be a Kernel issue... Some Kernels use some of the available for use with apps removing some useability from the camera. You should check if your free Ram is bigger than 370 Mb. Usually most Kernels with bigger free memory has that problem...

Usually developers add some more free memory for general use, removing some from other parts of the Kernel used for example by the camera.
But if you only installed that Rom, usually the Stock Kernels don't have that problem. But depends on what Kernel that Rom uses... I don't know.

I have a Galaxy S+ (GT-i9001) and I use the K^Kernel that has great performance and awesome battery life. But for i9000 I don't know, sorry...
For i9001 there are 3 versions of this Kernel: 360 Mb; 370 Mb & 390 Mb of free memory.
In the 390 Mb version, 720p Video doesn't work also...
