[Q] Having problems getting into recovery mode - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am having a very hard and frustrating time trying to get into recovery mode. Basically I installed a ROM today that was very unstable, and when I go to rom manager trying to flash a different ROM the screen just goes black any help would be greatly appreciated thankyou.

Unless u wanna flash AOSP roms (CM or MIUI) or maybe froyo roms stay away from that app. To get to recovery the easiest would be to flash a kernel with cwm backed in. Download this package http://www.mediafire.com/?tx56ypyw8wx4c8n. Open ODIN_Kernel_Flasher in 2 - Kernel folder, add Kernel.tar to PDA, uncheck auto reboot, Connect your phone in download mode to PC and hit start. Once complete pull the battery and reboot your phone in recovery mode. Wipe data (factory reset), cache and dalvik cache and then flash a rom of ur choise. In case u'd want a GB (gingerbread) rom coming from stock or froyo rom first u'll HAVE TO flash gb bootloaders before the rom. U'll find the gb bootloader flasher in the package u downloaded, check out the readme file as well.

Now something else is going on with the phone. It was fine and charging when I went to bed now the freaking thing is stuck in a boot loop =(, the odin version you told me to download will it also fix this issue? Or do I need a different one?

If u can get it into download mode ur all fine, as for which Odin, u'll find everithing ur looking for in that package I've linked. Once extracted go trough the readme file.
Edit: which rom did u come from and which one did u flash last?

I came from an obsession rom which was the unstable one, flashed to darkys rom. I still can not get it into recovery mode I will give the odin link you posted a try thanks for all of your help

Does ODIN not recognize that the captivate is hooked up?

[Q] Galaxy S hangs on bootscreen, no recovery mode after flashing

Hi,
I recently flashed a new rom (ultimate galaxy s v.7) from xda, and I flashed it via clockwork.
clockwork installed it and I rebooted, and it seemed to hang on the lockscreen for an abnormally long amount of time.
when i take the battery out and try to boot into recovery mode, it flashes to black then shows the galaxy s boot again.
previous to flashing this rom i have cleared the cache and all data on the phone. i have a nandroid backup so if i could get back to clockwork recovery this would be helpful.
also previous to flashing this rom i had a 3 UK rom which i installed by accident via kies, running 2.1...this rom seemed to be quite resistant to installing another rom from kies.
help would be MUCH appreciated...
thanks in advance
so recovery mode isnt an option then ?
What about Download mode ?
Hi,
Download mode worked before.
I have now managed by some miracle to get into recovery mode and now have gained options about a speedmod universal lagfix.
Is this associated with clockwork / ultimate 7.0 rom / a sign that the rom has installed in some form, and should i reboot, or should i now do a nandroid back to the rom i had before?
I believe speedmod uses CWM, so you can just do the rollback to your previous rom

however would it be safe to reboot, as i'm currently in recovery mode and considering to do a nandroid OR alternatively reboot and see if the new rom starts up..
well u cant leave it in recovery mode forever lol, reboot it, if it doesnt come on, try recovery mode again or just flash another ROM thru ODIN
ok. how long do you think is a reasonable time to wait before concluding that the rom doesn't work and I should nandroid back to my old rom...?
Half an hour gives plenty of time .
jje
what would be the reason that it hangs on the galaxy s bootscreen?
could be anything.... installing process not completed properly. best to just re flash .

do you mean recover via nandroid or reflash the same rom, then leave it?
choice is yours, ive never restored using nandroid so dunno what its like. but try it first, if no success re flash using odin. u will lose all your data

SGS only boots in to Recovery

I tried to upgrade to a new Mintberry MIUI ROM and my phone got stuck in a bootloop. After flashing a .pit and the EZ GB bootloaders via Odin, then a Galnet MIUI Chameleon ROM, my phone still will not start properly - it keeps booting into Recovery Mode only (I can get in to Download mode if necc), and that's it. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to resolve this? When trying to restore a previous backup I just get an error message about a bad checksum and this fails as well.
Starting to fear the worst!
I have a NEO kernel.zip and a couple of MIUI.zip ROMS on the sdcard, but whatever I try I can only get the phone to boot into Recovery.

Flash it with Odin. Something must have went wrong somewhere.

Remove the battery and keep it for few min and boot into download mode
then you can install any one of odin base ROMs
For stock rom

First of all, I just suggested that.
Second of all, why would you link to another site for guides on how to flash custom ROMs? This is XDA Developers. There are more than enough tutorials here. The OP just needs to utilize that new search feature they implemented just yesterday.

thanks a lot
Reply this
1. Where you find cwm.zip can you link me that page (not file)
2.Are you able to entre in download mode
3.You were on which ROM while doing this?
i downloaded cwm.zip with the busybox from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647148
yes i can enter the download mode
i am on the stock ics rom (which i upgraded the 2.3 to it)
please help me
and thanks for the fast reply
First you didn't know that zip is not available now, and you must have this which you downloaded earlier, that zip is abandonas it proved to use unsafe and can brick device.
Not only that, you souldn't have to wipe anything on stock ICS.
Anyway if you are able to enter download mode then flash any GB ROM you have already with you, otherwise download from my signature (pre rooted) and flash with Odin
ok i wasn't know that, anyway i downloaded odin, what did i need else? what you mean by "download from my signature (pre rooted) and flash with Odin"?
i didn't understand this sentence, did it mean that i need specific type of rom to flash it from odin?
thank you a lot
Yes download this
http://d-h.st/HJM
Extract it and flash with PC odin.

please reply thanks
with my respect
See everything is on your luck, I hope you get device working again with above said ROM.
But remember even after flashing ROM successfully, it may not boot up, dont worry. enter to recovery(vol up+hole+power) and wipe cache, delvik cache and data. then it should fine.
But if while flashing ROM, if it stuck then your luck is not with you and chances will be high you have bricked device.
Let report back, n Me or someone will guide you for next step.

if it is depends on my luck, so it is a problem anyway thank u a lot and wish me a good luck.
B'coz what you did was totally wrong and risky, and if any damage you had can only rule out once your device gets life again. So pray before flashing and GoodLuck from ourside.

yes it was been a wrong, and i didn't have the enough experience to do like this step,
i install the ore rooted rom (in your signature) and i flash it, before it finish flashing it stop and then give an error, and when i turn on the phone to the recovery mode it give a message "firmware upgrade encourtted an issue, please select recovery mode is kies and try again" what can i do please.
thanks
You should have noted down the error on that flash before you went to recovery mode. Every error is an essential part and you should take a note of it as this can lessen your upgrade issues.
So here's what your going to do. Turn the phone to Airplane Mode.
Try to reflash again the pre prooted GB room in download mode Once your successful doing it, download stock ICS firmware (in your region) from www.samfirmware.com. Don't use OTA updates as this will mostly fail. Just use PC KIES to update your phone back to 4.0.4 ICS.
Take it one step at a time and again next time, remember try not to be in a hurry doing it. It takes patience and a bit of luck in flashing and upgrading.
Yes as above said, reflash ROM by putting device in download mode
hello again
in the begining thank you for your help
i fixed my phone, in a shop specialized for these cases but i dont know how.
and my phone now returned to the stock ics rom.4.0.3
i would ask if i can flash a custom rom (jelly bean 4.1 for example) and what are the safety steps that can i follow to avoid any another brick to my phone? what do you advise?
thanks again.
if u on ics u need to flash a safe kernel like philz or hydracore. that's it. Now u r good to go
Is there any danger if i flash any of the kernels u mentioned? And does the phone remain working after i flash the kernel? And after i flash the kernel what is the next step? Flash the rom? Or there is any step required before?
Thanks a lot
yes the phone will work after flashing any of the mentioned kernels.
philz is the best for ics as it can be installed from stock recovery and it's safe and gives u root and cwm
then u can boot into cwm and do a factory reset format system, data, wipe cache and dalvik then install the new rom.

[Q] stuck in broken recovery mode

Hi everyone
First of all a little history:I used this [PhilZ-cwm6][n7000] v4.93.6 Safe Stock Kernel+CWM6+Root+exFAT+ext4-LT4 to root my n7000 on 4.0.4 (I bought it with 4.0.4).
Then after some time Android wanted an upgrade to 4.1.2 and after some time I just tried it and it failed after booting into recovery mode, because it didnt find a the expected kernel, I think. But I had the chance to boot up again.
OK I then did the update with Kies-Software and everything worked again. Then I rooted the phone again using the same method as mentioned in the post above.
Now today the phone wanted to update again, I thought, OK, if it didnt fail completely the first time, it will fail in recovery mode and let me boot up again.
But...
This time it went into recovery mode and didnt let me boot up again. It just shows the robot with the crystal and the progress bar seems to move a little but then the screen goes black for a second and the robot returns and the progress bar moves a little and the same again.... I dont get into the recovery menu.
I tried samsung kies emergency recovery, it doesnt find my n7000.
I tried to flash the kernel with a newer version from the post above. (I am not allowed to post there). No change it gets stuck in broken recovery mode.
I can push volumedown power and home to get into the download mode.
My question is what can I do?
Is there any other chance to avoid a complete stock recovery (is that the right term/way)?
What do I have to flash and how?
I am a little worried about the brick issues and I dont know which version I have to flash to set it back completely...
Please help & thanks
drz
No worries, since your download mode is still working you can flash a stock Samsung ROM via odin. Download one from here and flash it in odin while in download mode. Latest at this point of time is LT4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
This will give you the stock JB Bootloader, Recovery, and ROM. Its completely unrooted though, and the phone will not be wiped in the process, so remember to do so after you flashed it.

Thanks a lot, crownest!
I sweated a bucket of blood and seat, because I couldnt wipe cache and data first, but it worked!!!
Everything looks like before!´the update!
Some more questions (sorry):
do you think I should wipe cache and data now?
Is a stock rom like the rom on internal usbcard only?
What about the update? Can I update safely now?
Thanks again for helping...
greetz
drz
Yup you should be able to wipe cache and dalvik with no issues now.
I believe all ROMs be it stock or custom installs to the NAND memory (Someone correct me if im wrong) and never on your internal/external SDcard
As for OTA updates via Kies, I dont see why not, but if the same issue does reoccur again then my suspicions would point to a possible NAND corruption on the device. Not sure if there is a fix for that, but its a risk you gotta take. Or you can always root the phone and flash custom ROMs as new builds get released, this way you'll never have to use OTA updates again.

I think I bricked my phone...

Hey guys, this is my frist thread, and i need a help.
I was going to flash a stock rom, so I open the CWM to wipe data/cache and accidentally format the system directory.
But as I did not realize, and I asked to restart the phone and was told by the recovery that had no root. Not realizing still ****, I authorized him to do the root, and restarted the phone. When I put in so download the computer did not recognize more when turn on is in black screen, and I can not access the CWM. Help me please.:crying::crying::crying:

1. So your phone is rooted now and you've a custom recovery... mmm and which files did you use to do it?
2. Have you the Samsung drivers installed on your computer?
3. Are using the correct Odin's version?
Look... The issues still here...

Viper...
2- I have the drivers since 2013!! I instaled a newer version but , not works.
1- I have these( CWM and Root) because i get this phone with CM 8 and i upgrade it to CM 10.2, the same with CWM.
3- I download the version from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2609021
updates:
I miraculously managed to open the recovery mode and so I again installed CM 10.2.
But I was thinking of installing the stock ROM to see if I could make the system be lighter as a great fact that this phone is not have much larger interior space. Now the question is another: Will settle the stock and cleared with the root, it would be lighter? Or should I look for another rom? And I still can not make the computer recognize the phone.

Wooow! Great!
If you have access to recovery mode, you have all you need (download mode is NOT necessary at all if you can boot into recovery mode ) There's some light CUSTOM STOCK ROMS as Stock Lite, Adrenalin, Spacecaker's roms... they are based in stock firmwares and use custom kernels and mods. are light and smooth, have a great stablility and battery life
Do a back up from your current rom (just in case) and flash one of them
