Contacts issue - Motorola Droid 3

Does anyone knows why this are happening? When I select a contact it gave me this messages:
Sorry!
The application Contacts Storage (process com.motorola.contacts) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

I've been having issues with this too, there are threads all over various android forums (sorry, new user, can't post links) for it, just try google. In order for anyone to be able to help you however, we need to know what you've done to your phone, just root, custom ROM, frozen apps/services, deleted system apps, etc. as any of those could be having an effect on your phone. Some people are able to fix it by putting back the yahoo! contacts authenticator, but that did not help with mine, and I only had success after SBFing it.

Tanx. I rooted my phone and I deleted only the veryzon apps. I think it's all.

I am one of them - but it was necessary to De-Frost both Yahoo apps.
BTW, is there somewhere a list of apps safe to freeze?

Do you recall which apps specifically you removed?

PLEASE Be sure to make backups while removing, or changing the stock apps with your phone in order to save yourself a lot of time, Ibuprofen and caffeine.
Yes, there are various ones, but I found this one to be most helpful; (please note this entire list was copied from Cory Streater over on androidcentral forums, and is actually a list & guide for removing bloat apps, though these same ones SHOULD be safe to freeze, should you choose to)
Please read carefully and proceed with caution
If you are only looking for the lists, feel free to scroll down to them. That said, there is some very important info before the lists I would strongly encourage you read.
This list has been created based on my prior experiences with a variety of devices. I am very confident that the Verizon Bloatware, Live Wallpapers, and Widgets listed below can be safely renamed/moved. That said, this is a new device with an updated version of Motoblur. If you do not want to be a test case, you should wait for others to confirm these apps are safe to remove. Do not throw stones at me if something goes wrong.
Before you begin:
Before you start making changes, I would strongly recommend backing up your device with a program like Titanium Backup (also in the market).
All of the files below are in /system/app.
The most popular file explorer for accessing and moving these files is called Root Explorer.
Do not delete files. Either:
Rename them from <filename.apk> to <filename.apk.old>
Read post #2 to learn how to move them. Historically, on other phones, OTA updates have failed if apps don't exist. The system folder had to be exactly the way it was when the phone shipped.
Before you rename or move an app in the /system/app folder, check the list below. If it is not listed, or you are unsure if it is safe to modify, please ask first. To be safe, I would only remove the apps listed below, until it is updated.
If an APK file also has an associated ODEX file, the ODEX can be renamed/moved also.
The following is a must read if you need to put an app back!
When you move an app (and ODEX if applicable) file, from /system/app to the SD card, the permissions change from rw-r--r-- (to) --rwxr-x. The owner/group changes from root/root to system/sdcard_rw. The app disappears from the app drawer and all is good.
Now, lets say you move them back for some reason:
When you move them back, the permissions remain what they were on the SD card.
The apps (e.g., VZ Nav) will not show up in the app drawer - even after a reboot.
You need to put the permissions back to rw-r--r-- and then reboot before they will show up in the app drawer again.
The owner/group of these files will remain system/sdcard_rw, but that doesn't seem to have any negative impact.
The best way to change the permissions - is to use Root Explorer.
Move your apps from the SD card to your /system/app folder.
If it isn't already, mount the folder as R/W
Press down on the file you want to change the permissions on then select permissions from the popup. If you get an error that it isn't read/write, then you didn't mount the folder.
Next, you should get a popup that allows you to change permissions. Change them as follows:
Required file permissions if you need to move something back:
Group Read Write Execute
User Checked Checked Not Checked
Group Checked Not Checked Not Checked
Others Checked Not Checked Not Checked

Notes:
If you install another web browser (e.g., Dolphin) you can also move Browser.apk.
There will be others, I'm sure, but I won't be the first to try.
If there are additional apps that you have successfully renamed or moved, please post them in this thread.
Suggested alternatives for removed apps:
Instead of the built in browser use Dolphin HD.
Use Google Maps with Navigation instead of VZ Navigator.
Buy apps through the Amazon MP3 store instead of the VCast music app.
Convert movies using DVD Catalyst 3, then transfer to your SD card instead of using the VCast video app.
For file browsing try using Root Explorer.
Search the market for a free caller ID - instead of the subscription based CityID app.
Instead of the Verizon IM client search the Market for an IM client app and/or stick to the built in Gtalk application.

And, sorry for the lack of formatting on the previous post. As I said, it was copied from another forum, and I would have posted a direct link, but I'm not actually allowed to yet. Hope it helps!

the same issue has already been solved here and here.
Personally, I succeeded - my XT860 is working as it should (see threads above).
What is really missing is a list of apps with descriptions of what they do to enable everybody to decide, whethet it is safe in terms of their needs to remove them.
Titanium Backup works good in terms of freezing apps, but failed me completely in terms of backup - I should have read their webpages more thoroughly... it seems TB cannot recover some system apps even if it tells you they are backed up. To have an image of systems apps saved and root explorer available is definitely safer way how to go back.

remove calllog limit - remove ringtones from music app - rotate in more directions

As the title, does anybody have a solution for these:
* store more than 500 record in calllog?
* I won't see the ringtones in music app library. There is something to do for exclude a specific folder. Or scan only a folder for music.
* It would be nice to rotate the screen in more than actual 2 directions
I use cyanogen on the G1, but I think these are limits for all other roms and phones.
tnx
500 calls in call log? Don't think that you can change it...
You would have to move the music into a folder called audio/ringtones I believe.
Doesn't rotate more than 2 directions as of yet

Do you run Apps2SD? I do, with the standard userinit.sh script (download from the swap link in my sig). If you place your ringtones in /system/sd/media then the userinit.sh will set the permissions, delete the stock /system/media folder, and symlink your folder over. This way your ringtones are segregated from your music, and also offloaded from internal memory.
Since you're linking into the system folder you need to follow the proper structure:
Code:
/system/sd/media/
/system/sd/media/alarms/
/system/sd/media/notifications/
/system/sd/media/ringtones/
thanks Saiboogu good soloution for music.
For me the calllog limit is a big problem
There are backup apps in the market that will store your SMS, call logs, etc in your gmail account. I only use the SMS ones, but you may check there and see if that's a suitable solution for you.. Should have infinite storage, it'll just archive calls 501+ into your gmail (technically all of them would be in gmail, but the first 500 would still be on your device as well).
Here's one: http://www.androlib.com/android.application.pl-polidea-gbackup_trial-zBx.aspx

Can you tell me what these .apks do?

Hello
I am looking at my /system/app and trying to figure out what these apks are responsible for and is it safe to nuke them
MediaProvider.apk
BugReport.apk
MediaUploader.apk
Clicker.apk
PackageInstaller.apk
Development.apk
DownloadProvider.apk
SettingsProvider.apk
DrmProvider.apk
SoundRecorder.apk
FilePicker.apk
Stk.apk
GooglePartnerSetup.apk
Term.apk
TmoImPlugin.apk
UserDictionaryProvider.apk
GoogleSubscribedFeedsProvider.apk
HTMLViewer.apk
ImProvider.apk
Now, I am pretty sure what some of them are (like ImProvider.apk) however I don't quite use those services so I'm wondering if they are stand-alon apps or integrated with something else (like IM and Gtalk may be?). Also, DRM provider, what's that? I don't believe that I have any DRM media, do I still need it? If someone could neat-pick thru those and let me know - that would be greatly appreciated. I decided to get rid of my a2sd set-up and going lean and mean. I already nuked all the stuff I could think of but I want to free up some more space in /system/app and stuff some of my apps from /data/app in there.
Thank you in advance.

I have an idea what most of them are but don't want to give a wrong answer.
package installer - what allows you to install .apk's
sound recorder - self explained, sound recording app
bug report - reports whats goin on
googlepartnersetup - googles first intial set up
settings - settings for your phone
media uploader - what allows your phone to upload video and pics to internet
development - for development purposes (assuming dev tools or something in it)
user dictionary - assuming its what stores all the words you use when you type
I'm not 100%. If I'm wrong on anything go ahead and flame me.

See that's where the problem is.... I use astro and that has built-in package installer... do I need 2? I know I need file browser lol
Initial set-up is handled by Checkin.apk and Set-upWizard.apk and I got both of those nuked successfully
Well....I guess nothing left to do
.....goes to nuke some stuff
Thank god for nandroid
My guess would be that package installer is used by Market so maybe you need it or maybe Market just downloads and doesn't install without package installer so then you can install with ASTRO. I wanna know what the stk.apk is for as it's never been in there before, I know it has something to do with the SIM card but what exactly?

You're right, I remember seeing it somewhere that stk has something to do with dual sim enviroment however I thought that android did not support dual sims... hmm interesting, well going to nuke it anyway.
You're probably going to want to keep PackageInstaller. Even though you can install apks through Astro it wouldn't have the right permissions to do so on its own. It would have to do so through a system level service which is likely what PackageInstaller is.

Good point. I'm taking them out one by one to see what happens.
Thanks!
FYI I wouldn't delete any of the *Provider.apk files. These appear to be basic system services that other apps would need to implement some of their functionality. MediaProvider for example would be the service apps would use for playing sound or video. I'm not sure but I think DRMProvider is for protected apps (this would also include free apps if the developer published it that way). Some of the others also look like they would be used for app functionality through intents as well. Like HTML Viewer which I believe provides HTML rendering for apps that need it (possibly including the browser as it wouldn't make sense for it to have it's own separate renderer). Term might be what provides the adb shell. I would really do more research before you start deleting files indiscriminately. I just keep recalling the old story about the guy who deleted all those useless DLL files to free up hard drive space...

By the way Term.apk is actually Terminal Emulator so you don't need it if you don't use it and plus you can download it from Market.

I have to say once more.. thank god for nandroid. I'll post my results here at some point. See, some stuff may only be useful to some people and be a complete waste of space and resources for others. In my case - IM is that waste of space. I do use Gtalk but it's a stand-alone app therefore I thought that I could delete IM.apk, IMprovider.apk and TmoIMPlugin.apk without any problems.... WRONG!!! Gtalk started giving me FC. I've deleted IM.apk previously without any problems so it's one of the other two. Nand for now... will play with it later.
Thank you for your thoughts, if anyone wants to contribute - please do so.

[Q] How can we discover what each of the apks actually are from the package files?

Hi All,
I haven't had much luck with the questions I've asked, it's a shame these forums aren't more active but I'll try my luck again (and thanks in advance to all those who read).
A lot of us newbies who want to debloat our phones are unsure what apks to delete and what needs to stay. I've found various lists of apks that others have deleted, but with no indication of what they are exactly are. Some are obvious but others are not.
I, for instance, can't figure out which apk produces Video Unlimited, Smart Connect or Xperia Care Support from looking in system/app with the root browser. Is this even the only place I'd need to delete each apk from to remove it? But I digress.
So there surely must be a way to read each package and view or extract the user-friendly name that appears to the user in the Apps list or in the home screen. Can anyone tell me what it is? I would be very happy to go through each apk and list it out for people to then use as a reference, and we'd have one more resource for newbies to draw on, instead of us just deleting them blindly and/or at random.
Cheers as always,
schnidex
Use ES File Explorer and check the "App" menu. You will be able to see the apps by its user-friendly name, and clicking on each one you will see its package name.
- Install ES File Explorer from the Play Store (it's free)
- Press the hamburger menu (located up-left -> Library -> App)
- You will see user apps, then you can click on the menu and check system apps or all apps installed.
If you are rooted, you may uninstall system apps from there (long press, uninstall located down-left).

¡MUCHISIMAS GRACIAS, MI AMIGO!
:good:
The problem is not in knowing which APK belongs to which app (and sometimes one APK is several apps at once - like Google+, and you need to know it, and sometimes you don't see an app at all for the APK, like for most system APKs). The problem is knowing what the app actually does, which parts of the system rely on it being present, and how well will these parts behave if the app is removed (vs disabled, which is a normal way to deal with unwanted apps). And this is where "debloating" can do more harm than good.

True in many ways, but my primary concern was removing the apps that appear in the app drawer. This seems to handle that perfectly.

My everyday NSTG has been updated to FW 1.2.2, running a kernel for 1.2.1 that enables multi-touch, no-refresh mode, and USB host/audio. I never found a kernel that would support BOTH no-refresh and fast mode AND USB, but for reading text no-refresh runs rings around fast mode, IMHO. So I took that kernel and substituted it for the one in the @pinguy1982 USB Host/Audio package so I would have the tweaked audio driver set he put together AND NoRefresh mode. Worked like a charm
I decided to ignore the QuickNav buttons entirely. I assigned the "n" button to "Home" (ADW Launcher) . I assigned the upper left button to "Back" and the upper right button to "Menu". Lower right is set to my "Set Cover" app.
I tried to create a really different look and feel (see images below) using a combination of Desktop VisualizeR and SiMi Folder, two amazing apps. A SiMi folder is essentially a miniature launcher which can be placed on the desktop and assigned an icon using Desktop VisualizeR. More information on the design of the home screen is here.
I also used Minimalistic Text to create the date/greeting and weather widgets (NST Weather Widget app). Any apps that didn't fit into my SiMi folder categories were typically seldom used tools of some sort (wallpaper picker, etc.), so they ended up only in the app drawer. ADW Launcher allows me to hide in the drawer "junk" apps or apps that are one-touch which have been assigned using NTMM.
I have two other NSTs I use for experiments. One runs the unofficial 1.2.2 UK ROM as described here and the other is set up just like the NSTG described above.
These three devices are registered and use the B&N Reader and Library apps.
I also have an NSTG which I have set up without B&N apps as described here. I have installed Mantano Reader and ColorDict (with the Merriam Webster Collegiate dictionary, just like B&N) to replace the missing B&N stuff. Otherwise, it is set up the same as the two NSTs. It is, however, running FW 1.2.1 which is helpful to me when developing Tasker-based apps since plugins do not work with FW 1.2.2 (that is, the Tasker routines do not call the plugins but apps made from the routines have no issues with the plugins).
All the devices also have dual-boot capability for CM 11.
My apps: those marked with * may be hard to find/are older versions and are included in a bundled zip here (note: Mediafire seems to have a problem with a zip full of apk files so each file has an added ".OLD" extension. Remove this before side-loading). Non-B&N apps with no links either came bundled with NookManager or are from the PlayStore (or places like it).

For homescreen setup screenshots, you can look at the NTG Homescreens 2 and NTG Homesceens 3 albums in my profile. I won't upload screenshots of my homescreen because I am a homescreen themer and change my setup about every other day. I can, however, add screenshots of other parts of my device, if you like.
The reason my uRamdisk is unreleased is that it is not stable enough or safe enough for widespread use. The main change that causes this is my seting it up to mount the /boot partition as read-write upon the device booting up. This is extremely dangerous for any average, non-developer user to have, because if even one file in that partition gets modified incorrectly or deleted, their Nook will become permanently unusable for anything except a paperweight.
Hopefully this explains things for you.
How do you guys have so much space to add apps to your NST? I've got the original NST and I keep getting warnings that the Nook is running out of space... Unless the NSTGL has a larger system ROM space than the NST? NOOK!E, I am currently using the 1337 ROM, and everything else seems to be working pretty great.

Um...I dunno? I have the original NST, too, with an 8 GB SD card (6 GB is still free). 90% of the internal storage is still free. I only have a few B&N books on internal storage, the bulk (many) are on the SD card along with music and audiobooks.
I have don't have any apps moved to the SD card.
So how come you're running out of memory? I get occasional nags from CleanMaster that RAM is scarce when I'm doing a lot of work, switching apps, etc., but I've never received any warnings about running out of storage space.

Interesting... I get the alerts like in screenshots below, including when I try to install apps from sdcard or market... How would I move stuff to /system/app from wherever it is? ES File Explorer seems to be finicky, at best, and I can't change the view to show full file names in list form.
Thanks,
DKaine

Use ADB tool or you can use Total commander with ADB plugin on windows machine http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2105707
Move apps from /data/app to system/app
And don't forget to set permissions to 644

Maybe, but I think the bigger question is "why is this happening in the first place?" Did you ever do any repartitioning? I'm running stock 1.21 and have never fiddled with anything like that. I've never moved apps to my SD card and have never actually even removed any stock apps, just disabled them by changing the extension to .OLD. I just let apps install wherever they have a mind to. The only thing I have avoided, as a matter of course, is storing media on the internal memory (except for the few B&N books). All my own stuff goes on the SD card.
So what's taking up so much space on your NST? Something's not right.

Hi, sorry for the delay in response... Work kind of got in the way...
I have never done any re-partitioning, and I've got a 16gb sdcard. This is the first time I'm trying to move apps around, and I don't have many B&N books on the internal memory. I've only had the basic apps that install when first installing the ROM (UCbrowser, abridged list of Google Apps, SuperSU, ES File Explorer, etc.)... I started getting the alerts mentioned before just randomly that the Nook storage space was getting close to full. I only started getting the new errors when trying to install apps from the GoogleMarket or side-loaded sources. I only started trying to get rid of stuff/clear space once I started getting these messages/errors.
I've followed all the steps in the first post here Nookie's 1337 ROM to update from an earlier version of that ROM.
Thanks for following up.
DKaine
Yep, and either yattaro or NOOKIE would be your best bet for help with that ROM and the issues you are seeing. I didn't notice any similar responses within that original thread. You might try a PM to NOOKIE. I know he's busy with school right now, but he'll get back to you.
Do you think that antivirus apps are 100% useless on NST (and android devices in general)?
edit: News Republic fails to connect, says: "not trusted certificate server", any clue? (or other similar application working?)

I think that the system is too limited to get into many dodgy situations in which you might need antivirus protection
Seriously, even if you could find an app that would work on 2.1, the chances of the database being current is very small. It would also probably slow the system down even more.
I am bummed about News Republic It was working fine the last time I checked it. The security certificate issue is new and I guess it's one that is not covered by the updated cacerts file used to resurrect the Kindle app and others. I'll try to take a look at the logcat and see if it identifies the certificate name.
In the meanwhile, the NewsHog app still works (just checked to be sure) except for the weather (which may be part of the paid version). It's a little cranky syncing so you may have to touch the sync symbol as you move from news category to category. Also, scrolling is an issue (as it is with nearly all of these apps except for News Republic!!!!!). A very quick flick with your thumb across the bottom right corner of the screen usually works best, but it is a skill. Also helps to keep the screen gutters clean.
Edit: I managed to scrape up older versions of News Republic that spanned 3.0 to 4.2. None of the 4.x would install so they are for higher Android versions. The final 3.x series (3.30) installed and opened OK but exhibited the same issue. A glance at the logcat revealed multiple server contact problems during the initial opening of the app. So it's not just one certificate, regardless of what the screen notification says. Looks like a recent change left the older versions in the dust. RIP.
Also, although it's not quite as streamlined as an app, you can bookmark news.Google.com in your browser--I use Opera Mobile--and if you take the time to customize your view when using a PC (and signed in) you can achieve a similar effect if signed in on your NST browser. No scrolling issues either.
Thanks for the info, unfortunately News Republic as you said continues to have issues. NewsHog isn't bad unless you live in Greece - there is no locale for my country Finally, bookmarking news.google.com/gr (or whatever) is a good idea, but manage the whole thing from desktop doesn't work as opera NST version is too old to sync with current desktop browser. I also use WordNews, seems reliable and has a lot of sources working.

It's not necessary to sync browsers. All you have to do is sign in with the same Google account you use on the NST and set up your news preferences. If you sign in with Opera on the NST then the same news preferences will be displayed. I finally put an Opera shortcut to Google News on my NST home screen and used the Google news app icon: -)
Thanks for the WorldNews tip. I'll check it out.

That was a hit! Done and enjoyed, thanks!
GenieWidget does not seem to work...when I try to add a location it tells me that it has no internet access, which is weird since everything else works with wifi on my rooted NST glowlight...?

GenieWidget has been dead for quite awhile. Even if you could set a location, the weather part was the first to die and then eventually you could not bring up the news either.
If you're interested in weather, WeatherAce is pretty nice, especially if you have a Wunderground API key (free). The only news apps I have that still work are BBC, NPR and NewsHog. All suffer to varying degrees with cranky vertical scrolling, but you can manage with some practice and very clean screen edges. Another alternative is to customize Google News (news.google.com) on your PC logged in to the same account that your NSTG is registered under. If you then sign in on the browser you use for your NSTG, you will get those same customizations. I did that and set a shortcut on my home screen, "borrowing" the current GoogleNews app icon. At least with that one (in Opera Mobile) there are no scrolling issues.
Working versions of the apps I mentioned above can be found in the zip package linked from my signature.

Storage problem

Yesterday I checked my available space to download something on the phone and realized that there is miscellaneous files that eats up my storage for no reason.
It was not there before and when I take total of them it does not reach 8.5gb, not a little bit.
What might be causing this? It is not bloat I believe. It was not that large on the first day of the phone.

hi,
If you tap on "miscellaneous files" it should open up another page with a brakedown of all you files thats make up the 8.5 Gb. In short if you look at the listed content you will see its overall your 3 rd party apps + some system apps, that you installed. etc etc
Lot of 3rd party apps keep various data etc for your relevant
apps to function properly.
eg.. a weather app might keep various themes in these files that enables you to tweak that app with various combo of themes. Also in my breakdown i see my S Note has data in it that i saved. Deleting this file would cause me to loose my S Note data..! (So be careful. )
I you check the listed breakdown you can decide if you want to delete it, but be careful.!
Deleting some files, might cause that app to force close or not function. or loose data that you saved ( Eg Games data)
Lastly, the longer you have and use your device, the more data is added or installing new apps for this "miscellaneous files" to increase in size. Also sometimes when uninstalling an app, the relevant app data of that app, is not deleted and bloats your device !
You have to manage your device properly.
good luck

Well when I add them up it barely hits 350 mb. The rest is unknown (not shown under the "miscellaneous files" section). The largest file is 247 mb for my dictionary files and the rest only 100 mb or so. Still that does not explain the 8.5 gb file You can check the screenshot to see what I am complaining about

That is bizarre! I find a much better way to do storage analysis is using one of the file manager tools. I use File Manager HD which has a storage analysis tool https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rhmsoft.fm.hd
I am using es file explorer. One thing I forgot to mention that I am using Spotify. When I search through es file app, I have ~14 gb of file lol but now the question is, if I do have 14 gb Spotify file, then my other applications don't use my storage or what? Because I have lots of apps installed, they supposed to consume some storege I am confused, a lot.
Edit: removed 2 downloaded play list through Spotify, did not effect any storage usage anyways. The files size are the same through es file explorer.

hi,
yes, i do now have a better understanding of what you mean.
Yes, i quickly checked an saw my
miscellaneous files.
Yes it does not add up at first glance. My my files add up to - + 400 mb. but it shows 1.6 gig.
I then checked disk space with es file
Eventually everything adds up (i think) i suspect part of miscellaneous files also includes your " Android" folder (Data + Obb folder) which is not shown but mine is 1.2 gig in size.
Adding that Android folder, to my other total from miscellaneous files adds correct total as listed total in miscellaneous. (hope you follow)
Just remember, the Android folder on your phone mostly contains you 3 rd party data apps and your games data etc etc. and a few o/s apps data
Bottom line,
i would say yes total is....
your listed miscellaneous files plus Android folder (data plus obb folder)?? (thats not listed but) but included in total of miscellaneous ?
Not sure, but yes thats my take.
good luck
My obb file is empty if there is no hidden files.
Android/data has spotify folder as I told and it's size is 6.55 gb which I use actually. Now everything is clearer except why it does not go down when I remove the downloaded musics
