Video Review: Official Desktop Dock from Samsung - Nexus S Accessories

Hi guys,
Got my hands on the official samsung Desktop dock for the Nexus S, wanted to share my thoughts. The product itself is really simple, but it does exactly what it's supposed to. It's made from plastic but feels high quality, Nexus S fits perfectly and I definitely recommend it. Full review below:

on an unrelated note, how do you embed youtube videos? I always get the straight code when i post them

Keep it up mate loving the content

Agreed, thanks a lot!

The vibrant dock has a speaker line out and it has horizontal scrolling; this dock seems like a poor afterthought by Samsung.

I agree, there are better docks out there - this is a simple, but effective solution.

Official Samsung Car Dock / Desk Dock

Just came across these:
samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ECS-V1A3BEGSTA
samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ECR-D1A3BEGSTA
Anyone tried these? I'm also wondering if they will work with the Sprint Nexus S 4G - Samsung's page says they will, but the 4G phone is going to be 1mm thicker and they could have just screwed up.
I can't say anything about the car dock because I don't use any. But, as for the desktop dock, I recommend taking a look at the KiDiGi dekstop dock for Nexus S. It looks awesome, it holds it tight into place, and it's not that expensive; also, it has a version with a 2nd battery compartment.

I've got both.
Nothing fancy, no bells or whistles.
Desktop dock has a blue LED to indicate when the phone is plugged in. When it's docked, the phone automatically goes to clock mode. Press the clock app on your phone's desktop to see what it looks like.
Car dock is completely passive. Very sturdy though so the phone sits there without jiggling, even when you press the screen/keys. Cheaper models are sometimes not quite so sturdy.
But both seem very good build quality. I'm happy with both of them.

Mind if I ask where you purchased them from? Samsung's online store always says they're backordered. I've been looking everywhere online for another place that sells these docks ever since the phone came out, but I can't find them for purchase anywhere. Thanks in advance for any help.

I have been on the fence about the desktop dock, but may have to buy one! Does it slide in and connect pretty easily?
Yes it plugs in and connects very easily and smoothly.
Feels like a very nice fit between the phone and the desk dock.
With the car dock the fit is very tight, which is good because the phone is not moving from its place at all.

Great thanks! Gotta get one now! Guess ill order from Samsung and hope it doesn't take too long to ship!

Man, how I wish they delivered to the U.S. I've been dying for one of those desk docks...
I'm ordering from Samsung to US will keep everyone posted on shipping times. I know it says they are backordered.

Can the desktop dock be turned upright? Or does it have to lay on its side?

I found mine at best buy last night...they had both car and desk dock. I purchased the desk dock for work and love it. Just used it this morning for first time. Slides in easily and goes into landscape clock app automatically when plugged in displaying time and weather. Very cool!
does it come with a built in bluetooth? like the nexus one dock
I don't believe so...nothing mentioned on the box...just seems to charge phone and throw into landscape dock mode.

I just got a case from the sprint store yesterday. Do you think the phone will still fit in the car dock or will I have to remove the case?

I looked at them both at the local Best Buy. They don't look like they would work with a case so ill probably put just an invisible shield on to use the car dock.

i've got one of these. works fairly well, but can take a bit of getting used to.
I really like using my Microsoft Arc keyboard. It's pretty much full size, but I can't type anywhere near as fast on anything smaller. It's slick, light and has a carry pouch. Tiny dongle into USB OTG cable.
I also have a mini bluetooth keyboard that is about the size of my phone. It's ok, but not any great advantage over the on screen keyboard.
Out of all the bluetooth keyboards that I have seen, Logitech one is by far the best.

Like I posted in another tread, I found this keyboard on ebay significantly cheaper (open box)

I'm using my old Galaxy Tab keyboard/case. Had to shim the bottom to get it centered in the case, but it works reasonably well.

I still have the hp touchpad keyboard, it's pretty good to type on and light weight too, just not sure how to carry both together.

This keyboard is super cheap and at least one guy is claiming that it works great with his Nexus 7.
Has anyone else tried it?

I've got one too. Great to haul around for note taking. It fits well in a bag since it's ~1/4" thick up until the battery compartment. Just wedge your N7 under the thin part and let the back of the keyboard sit off to the side.

Just got another comment from the Amazon thread, and apparently it doesn't fit the Nexus 7 very well:
R. Brent says:
I also bought this keyboard to use with the Nexus 7. I'm a bit impressed with how usable it is, as long as I remember not to try and type quickly.
The Nexus 7 is not a good fit. The adjustable clip doesn't quite get tight enough, and the Nexus 7 will slide out from the sides. However, it does work to hold it upright.
For less than $10, I still think it was worth the price though.

You know what would kick ass? A Microsoft Surface-like case - with a kickstand in the back and a hard cover in the front that is also a keyboard.

I purchased 3 different ones just like that. they all work with NeXus 7 no issues. The top arm moves up and down and fits the NeXus 7 just fine. I even have it with the NeXus7 case on it. then it becomes a tight fit.
But it does work, and for 10-15 bucks depending on which one you purchase.

Naw, not quite:
If you turn the case sidewise, the Nexus slides out. Keeping the Nexus inside its case makes it a good fit though.

Thanks, not sure if it will sit the way I want it too from the side vertical pictures. I may need to buy it to see, which then if it doesn't I would have to send it back, ugh!
I may also need to wait for a review cause I bought one that was similar which worked fine in landscape but in portrait the stand was too flimsy to hold it up and it would just collapse

Interesting device

Mod this to hold Gnote 2 maybe?

that's kind of interesting. Although, kind of expensive. I believe the DiNovo Minis still go for around $150.
I happen to have one I use for HTPC. I'll see if I can sync it and if it'll work or not.

It's just a bluetooth keyboard. It has a flip cover when not in use, the Streak is just sitting on the cover. The streak is slightly bigger than the note I believe, so this would work as well.
I was able to sync the DiNovo Mini to the GN2 without issue. The GN just saw it as keyboard input device with a mouse input. I'm on the US Sprint variant, which is rooted, and running a deoxedized stock rom.
Here's a YouTube video showing it working and in the blue tooth synced device list.
Here are some pictures, with some being comparison shots (click on the image for larger image):
The issue I could see with the setup, especially in regards towards the OP's youtube link, the Galaxy Note does not have a landscape home screen mode. There are some apps that can do it; at least from what I found on a quick google search.
I still think it's a bit expensive for it's use. Plus, you would need to come up with a way to secure the GN to DiNovo, especially for environments such as train rides and so forth.
I use a case with kickstand and this rechargeable backlight Bluetooth keyboard with track pad I got for like $20-25.... works great.

I'm sure the Viimote, I think that's what it was called, works great. I've seen it referenced quite a bit for HTPCs. Unfortunately, doesn't seem like an altermative solution to what the original OP's link was to:
As once can see, the GN would be attached the DM's cover. This would be ideal for situations where you don't have surface to place either the GN or keyboard or when one is on the go. This is similar to what products like the Gameklip and trying to solve in regards to gamepad controllers.
that looks epic!! How securely does it attach?

Looks very tempting. Amazon has the keyboards for around $70, but that's still kinda steep. As for securing the device I was thinking thin tpu case and industrial velcro, but I would have to have hands on to figure it out. Thanks for your input!

I was thinking if you're going to secure it, one could try some kind of suction cup thing or maybe whatever something like the Rockfish Pivotpad uses. In the pictures, I just had it sitting on the DM cover. In the video, I just set in a PivotPad I have.
I had the same though about securing a second TPU case to it, but I would be concern about stretching the corners of TPU case(s) or damaging the phone from taking it on and off in cases where one is using it on their daily commutes. The biggest concern I would have, the weight distribution is not even by a long shot. I'm not sure if the weight, in the long term, will damage the hinge. It would be something to look into from the Dell Streak project.
I use my DiNovo for HTPC. So I just did to see if it worked the GN2. I figured size comparison shots between the GN2 and DM would be helpful for someone who wanted to take on the project. I think that is what the other person did, see if it works at all. $70 isn't bad for a blue tooth keyboard that is portable.
Like most things when using DM, you kind of have to figure out which functions work and how. I found escape (fnc + tab) was the back key. I didn't try any of the media keys. The mouse moved kind of slow for my liking; I have it set to max on the HTPC.

Keyboard/Case Recommendations for Nexus 10

I'm looking for recommendations from other users for their top 2 or 3 best keyboard/case combinations for the Nexus 10. I just returned a Minisuit combo to Amazon because the keyboard simply didn't turn out to be as described in the product information. Obviously I should have kept the Minisuit prior to returning it so time is of the essence in getting a replacement ASAP.
Thanks!

I hate to say it but the design of the Surface tablet's keyboard is slick, it provides a front cover and a keyboard all while connecting via its magnetic pogo. I have high hopes someone designs one for the Nexus. Why are we so far behind the ball on this?

Now that I've tested two cheap combos that turned out to be the same units but branded differently, I'm going the separate route. Actually Kensington & another manufacturer (can't remember the name at the moment) make what I think are very good keyboards akin to the Surface.

I think that the Poetic Keybook Removable Keyboard case is pretty decent. That is the one that I bought which i found here http://www.pctabletcases.com/nexus-1...ssories-guide/. They also have a couple other cases but the reviews on that aren't as good. The Poetic case isn't the greatest case but it does serve its purpose well.

+1 to this, but I bought the $35 "Poetic Keybook Removable Keyboard" on amazon for the time being.
It has some stupid strap and arbitrary sized keys imo. Also the bluetooth has lag sometimes. I really want them to go the route of the microsoft surface keyboard design. Mainly because of less lag when typing vigorously.
