As Google doesn't support Navigation in my Country, I need other ways to access it.
As I searched in many forums, I got two solutions; One is Brutmod and another is googlemaps 5.10.1 ownhere.apk.
1. Brut mod can serve you offline navigation but it doesn't have the ability to precache map area. (you need to manually precache the area by zooming in and zooming out in many zoom levels)
2. Googlemaps_ownhere.apk (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007132) has the ability to precache maps but it cannot navigate in offline mode, I mean it cant navigate without Data connection.
Can anyone guide me how to use offline navigation in SGM?

I have a Kaiser running WM6.1.
I have a separate GPS that can access satellites or whatever and give me directions to places without any subscription fees or anything...
The Kaiser has GPS capabilities built in.
I have Google Maps, which I love, as long as I'm on wireless.
My question is, is there any program I can put on my phone that will make it behave like my other GPS, accessing satellites instead of data connection to give me maps, or even just GPS-based directions? Better yet, can I download maps from Google somehow and have Google Maps use GPS instead of data connection?
Thanks!
TomTom Navigator, Garmin Moble XT, iGo, etc... um, SEARCH?
I have found TerraCrosser to be a very good GPS app from my Tilt. It has a companion desktop app that you can download map files from Goggle/Yahoo map. The can get very large depending on how much detail you desire. So have an SD card ready.

You're misunderstanding - Google maps like any other GPS programs do use the Kaiser's internal GPS to get your position/speed/heading. However, as it has no local map storage (except the cache of already visited places) it needs data connection to download the map tiles as you move. Google map is also a "dumb" interface, when you ask for directions it will submit that to the google server and just display the response to you.
What you need is one of the aforementioned programs - that have their local map on the memory card, and do all the work themselves without requiring some server on the net to do it for them.
does the app clear its cache while it exits if we dont choose to save for offline use ? if so, where does it store this temporary data ? is it in the same folder(on sd card) where the maps are saved when we choose to ?
WTF is Bigplanet? I could just look it up, but I've been drinking...sooo....just tell me.
Bigplanet is an advanced map application:
supports different map sources: Google Maps, OpenStreet, Yandex Maps
cache of loaded maps - map tile is loaded only once and than saves in local file cache(so you can use app even without any network connection!). This feature allows you to save a lot of money(app don’t use expensive gprs connection).
bookmarks - just add you favourite places to bookmarks if you don’t want to find it each time when you use app
zoom in by double tap(like in iphone): You don’t need to use zoom controls from zooming - you can just double tap place you need.
save map in given radius. Allows to save map around selected place. For example, you can save map around your home using cheap wifi connection and then use map offline.
checkout the developers' website ....http://bigplanetmaps.wordpress.com/
I never had any luck with Bigplanet. It errored out when downloading maps to sd card. The maps I did get downloaded were not consistant on the zooming. Also when I tried to get my location the GPS would come on for a few seconds and then go off. I wanted it to track me.
Will the app do those things now?
nah....same here
I dont have a data plan for my phone, i use my wifi, but it seems i need a data connection to use google navigation so it can download the maps, is there a way to pre-load or have saved maps in the sd card to point the nav to if no data connection is not present and all i have available is the gps signal
not with google maps
is there a way to do this with another app?

Maps mod Bruts, but don't drive any other way!
Better take copilot or sygic.

Better take copilot or sygic (I find them the best, most options).
I recently bought a Nexus One and have been in love with it from day one - Its been 3 weeks and am still exploring the android and the phone.... I had couple of questions on the maps...
1) Is there a way to cache maps of particular region so that we don't need a data connection while using navigation?
2) Is there any way to make the maps app act like the regular GPS devices - i mean the arrow to always remain straight and the maps to turn instead of the arrow moving and map staying put..... I hope all understand what I mean...

1. Google maps supposedly caches the route you set. True offline navigation support is apparently in the works.
2. Use the Car Home app/Navigation app (Maps 4.2) to start navigation.
Alternatively, you could try true offline navigation apps like Copilot (paid) or AndNav2 (free)...
Hi all.
I'm looking for a compass app with the option of being able to choose my destination from google maps and then have the full-screen compass point me to my destination. If memory serves, such a compass was standard with WinMo 6.5 on our HD2s but since I refuse to go back I'm looking for an android equivalent.
I've looked at a few compass apps that show me my position on the map, or allow me to store my current location but none that do what I want (I don't think).
Any ideas?
