I just got myself a Captivate for $120 from cowboom.com. Great phone, just a smaller version of Infuse, which I also happen to have. I really like the fact that charger port is at the top.
Anyways, when making calls, I hear mild but noticeable static which bothers me a bit. When I plug in an earpiece, I only hear it from left ear piece and sound through right ear piece is just fine. Can we tell if this is because previous owner flashed incompatible ROMs/Kernels/Modems, or just a bad hardware? I don't want to return this phone because it has a perfect GPS, but I will have to if the static problem is hardware related.
On a different note, I never knew that GPS on Captivate could be this good. It is a lot better than my Infuse. I had a Captivate about a year ago and GPS on that was a colossal mess. I feel like I need a PhD to understand the inconsistency of GPS chips in Captivates and Infuses.
Thanks in advance.
Here's some more info:
Baseband Version: I897UCKB1
Kernel: 2.6.32.9
Build: FROYO.UCKB1
Modem - I don't know how to find out....
I just rooted it and tried some sound mono conversion apps from the market which didn't help. Thought process was that if I can just mute 'left' and get all my sound through 'right' - that would solve the problem, but none of the apps allow me to change the left-right balance discussed above.
Baseband version IS the modem. Everything running is compatible.
You might want to try flashing a different modem. Top of the development section is a sticky.
Make sure its a I897 modem and not I9000.
If you're rooted then you might want to try flashing a voodoo kernel- that will get you nice sound boost and some clarity.
you can try flashing a different rom/kernel/modem...but if that doesn't fix it then i'm pretty sure that's a hardware problem...

I have a samsung gt i7500 but I'm sure the problem is android related.
After playing around with some roms and one time when I called someone he did not hear me and I didn't hear him, it worked only with the microphone and the headphones it came with. From there on reinstalled all possible roms versions and default versions and I always have the same problem.
Also I noticed that if I try to play music on the speakers I can't hear it.
Today I installed a new rom and saw the music DID work before making a call. But after the call with no voice/sound the speakers music didnt work any more either.
At one samsung shop a guy told me that he can't fix it but the internal drivers/software components are of different versions.
I think it might be the phone.tar file with an amss file inside that is ****ed up.
Any ideas? hoping someone can help
I don't know why are you making assumptions out of nowhere ("Android related"?), why you're blaming the OS for your messing with ROMs (everything worked before, didn't it?), and why are you posting on Nexus forum, when someone from Samsung forums would have much higher chances of knowing something about this problem.
Other than that - supposing that i7500 is like other current high end phones and has separate baseband CPU and apps CPU, I suppose you're running a corrupted / wrong radio build.
How can I check the radio built?
Settings => About
Look at the baseband version.

lots of custom roms and even a asop android 2.1 beta
Hi, i'm using the latest firmware for the TPH product code (PDA:JP5,MODEM JPY).
When i turn on the wireless and listen to music i notice there's some background noise, with the wireless off the sound quality is great.
This didn't happend with my stock firmware from my operator.
Is there a bug with JP5 Firmware or JPY modem?
Thanks in advance!
I had this problem using the 2.2.1 JPY modem. So I imagine that to be the cause. I never ran JP5 Rom.
Do you get pops and clicks?
Yup that's exactly the problem i face BUT only when the wireless is on.
Yup, I found that out by luck.
My theory is they made the wireless radio stronger in JPY, and as a side effect, caused a bit of interference.
Some people love the JPY modem, but I listen to lots of music so the modem had to go. Problem cleared up after a modem change.
ZSJPG is a pretty solid modem if you're looking for alternatives.
It seems we're in the same field, i listen to a lot of music on my phone.
Mixing modem's and pda's doesn't cause any stability problems?
I haven't noticed any.
For instance, I'm running JVB 2.3.3 rom, paired with a 2.2.1 ZSJPG modem.
Things are stable. I'm not dropping any calls or anything like that. The phone is still running normally in all other areas.
Here's a ZSJPG modem you can flash with Odin if you are interested.

Thank you very much!I'll try it out.
My buddies Captivate, which is still running a 2.2 I9000 rom, kernel, and modem is getting engine interference from our work truck when he makes or receives a call and it makes him sound a lot like a robot. I have flashed multiple modems on the phone without any success. The interference gets worse as the engine revs up and goes away completely when idling. My Captivate never did this, nor does my Atrix. Is this a hardware problem or something I maybe able to fix with another modem?
Hello,
I have a huge problem with my new LG 2x. I installed CM7 and everything went fine and I was quite happy about my new phone. Then I called someone and he complained about my terrible voice quality. Acutally it's not the voice qualitity, he can hear me clear but there's this static "signal checking" noise in the background - like when a phone is getting a call and lying next to your speakers. (I don't know if there is an English word for?).
I testet all basebands with it's corresponding RILs, the problem occured with all of them. Then I noticed that he can hear me perfectly when I put my speaker on while calling.
Now I went back to Stock with NVFlash on 10b - and updated via the LG update software to 10c (it game together with baseband 0405) - still there was this noise. I tried all basebands again - it seems to be better on 0503 ONLY. Still no great audio quality but at least not this noise.
Do you have any idea what I can do now? Is my device broken? It's really unuseable this way.. and I heard that most people are able to use CM7 with the newer basebands (0503, 0622) - am I the only one who is not?
I'm on O2 Germany on 2G (can't get more than EDGE here) if that matters.
I really hope you can help me
I love this device but I need to make calls with a goddamn phone...
Thanks in advance,
tony
Edit: I didn't test the "0622 Gingerbread only" Baseband because I read somewhere that this shouldn't be used.
noone here at xda? oO
Your phone probably have a defect microphone. You should get it repaired.
i have exactly the same problem (eplus-base)
but the microphone can't be defect, cause i have the problem only at home
everywhere else it's fine..
i think it's the low signal strength..
(cm7 standard ril and baseband 1802)
I live in Finland, operator is Saunalahti. I have exact same, problem. Only baseband is 502, which won't give "electronic noise" to people who i am calling...
I don't have any idea, why it is so. I have tried, basebands 622, 614, 606. Always same "electronic noice".
I also have the same problem and I think that there is allot more people with the same problem. In my case it gets really bad with any Gingerbread based rom.

annoying noise - help please
It's not a hardware fault as it sounds perfect in froyo ROMs
I have the same problem after installing cyanogen mod. Did you find a solution ?
Hi
I got this problem with my SGS microphone, I've read some other users have similar issues but no one seems to get to the point of it.
you will see,
first problem:
I cant record voice on the device (voice recorder/camera). the output sound is full of background noise and this also affect calls, I sooo anoyed by the complains from people that cant hear me during calls because if the noise and i have to almost scream to make me hear (i really hate that).
second problem: when i plug a headset I cant get it to record, i thought first it was hardware and changed the earpiece to try and it was the same and im sure the headset is working. but the phone dont seem to recognize the microphone jag( as i said i tried a different ear jack).
I have tried different roms for I9000 and I9000T (btw this is a GT-I9000T from panama C&W).
currently im on Gingerbread 2.3.6 GINGERBREAD.XXJVU
KERNEL :2.6.35.7-I9000XXJVU-CL851880
BASEBAND : I9000UGJK4
I know it looks all messed up (you can see its a I9000T on a I9000 firmware)
but im using it in the UK and this version is not supposed to be used there (I used to think quad band phones were functional worldwide, harsh lesson )
Hope to get some help guys
thanks in advance ....:good:
