[Q] remove "email" and "fmradio" from phone - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

can i remove the "email.apk" from an rom, without affecting the google mail apps ?
and do i need fmradio? (i dont listen to radio...)
i use simplicity 1.5, wanna update to 1.5.1 without this app

Offcourse.
Use sgs tools or nitrality.
It won't affect gmail app.

i will delete them from the rom before flashing it...

i would rather freeze them using titanium backup or mybackup, than remove them

Using nitrality to delete them frees up more system space - they can be added back with nitrality if desired.
Nitrality also removes associated lib files.
Imho it is the best option.

Restore Apps after a Wipe

Hi,
This is probably a n00b question but I am going to ask anyway.
I want to do the following:
First time I install new Custom Rom I register with a google account and download apps from market. So after downloading some 60 apps I want to unregister my google account and remove my default account. The only way I can remove my default account is by doing a wipe.
So Is there a way I can extract the APKs of all the 60 apps I have installed and then Do a wipe and then install the apks again to regain my 60 apps but no google default account ?
Thanks
Backup / Restore n00b
if youre rooted you can try titanium back up or else I would recommend mybackup pro (theres a trial version) it will back up apks and data (sms/contacts/email etc)
app Manager for the apk. can also select and simultanious Installations (there are also many others, see above).
sms backup & restore. awesome app for sms Backup to SD card or Your Mailacount without using gmail sync. everything is free. there is also a call log app and apn backup app from the same developer!
cheers

I like AndroidCommander
AppBrain will do this too.
You can pull the '.apk's using the "adb pull" command and then push them back afterwards.
Or if you're on a custom ROM you can use apps2sd to store the apps on your sdcard then they will be reimported after you install your new ROM after wipe. This may depend on which ROM your using though, not sure.

Titanium Backup and Restore?

How does this work? I have a full Titanium Backup and I remove a few Apps if I do Full backup again will my Removed Apps be totally gone in the Backup Folder or are they still there from Original Backup? If they are still in the Backup is there a way to get them out so if I need to restore the Removed Apps don't reappear on my phone?
Thanks
They will remain there.
To remove them you can either scroll to the bottom in Backup/Restore and select each one then hit "Delete" or Menu->Batch->"Delete backups for un-installed apps" then Menu->Refresh apps list
To batch restore apps without restoring specific ones Menu->Batch->"Restore all apps with data" then uncheck the apps you don't want to restore, and begin.

To MAKE SURE they are still there you need to HIT the menu button once you have opened up Titanium Backup, then HIT Preferences, scroll down to MAX BACKUP and change it from the default (1) to whatever hou want/need. I have mine set to three. This way it can save older versions of the appear. I have found that on occasion the newer version of apps sometimes have an issue so I go and use the previous version saved. This will also keep your uninstalled appear at the bottom with a line through them. You can usually just click on the lined through app and hit restore. Then choose either app or app+data. Also I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND the paid version. It will do the batch restore with one click of the restore appear+data. The free version will also batch restore them all but it goes through each app and you have to say okay each time for each app. Specially if you start trying out different rims every couple days like a lot of us do. Also the paid version (not sure.of the free version) let's you back it up to the external sd card. You just go to preferences, backup folder name, then type in external_sd/ in front of the TitaniumBackup that is already there and it will automatically change it to mnt/sdcard/external_sd/TitaniumBackup.
JUST MAKE SURE whenever you restore NEVER choose to restore system app and data. ONLY restore app+data or you will end up with force closes.

I do not have the paid version but I have a question about the free version. After I backup all the apps and system data, I removed a system application such as "My Files" which didn't cause any problems. If I try to click on the backed up (crossed off in TB) to restore it, I do not have the option to restore.
Is this normal or should I be able to restore a system application that I have backed up?
I've never restored a system app, and maybe that's a paid feature. If there isn't a simpler method, it's pretty easy to copy back in if you're running a custom rom.
Open the customrom.zip, copy system/apps/MyFiles.apk from it and put it in /system/app on the phone.
There are around 50 way to do that. Via USB copy the file to the phone and then use Root Explorer to copy it from /sdcard to /system/apps for example. If you don't see it again in the apps folder, reboot.
I never thought to open the custom rom zip file. thank you!
A tangential question
I've done the TiBu backup but don't see quickoffice in the backup file. Does anyone know why?

Backing up /data/app folder

Would backing up this folder enough to restore apps after wiping and flashing a new rom? I know this can be done via Titanium back up app, but all 3rd party apk apps are installed in this folder.

no parts of apps are installed elsewhere too such as custom folders or dbdata..
and some apps are installed to sd.
use titanium backup, mybackup pro, or appmgr to back up apps

Are there any reasons why we can't just back up a folder and then restore it which is a much easier step than working with Titanium etc...But I've the feeling that it's not that obvious and ta echnical whizzkid who would like to enlighten us about this would be greatly appreciated...
You can save your APKs in a folder you can copy them back but you have not installed them .

Some apk apps install just by tapping on them or is there a technical reason this should be avoided

Here is a DIY method to back up your apps manually. This should put this topic to rest. RIP!

[Q] Create a download list for Market?

Good day everyone, I have a small question which might sound odd to some of you, please note that I am aware of nandroid and titanium backup etc... as i have purchased titanium backup and find it extremely useful i know exactly what it does.
My question is pretty simple, is there an app that one can download and use, which makes a list of all apps installed and can backup that list either online or on the phone or in whatever way possible, and if one has to restore a phone or install a new rom etc.. can restore that list and the app would RE-DOWNLOAD all apps from market. I DON'T WANT TO RESTORE the apps from a backup, i just want an automated system to re-download and install the apps from the market directly. I know this might not make any sense to some/most of you, but the reason is quite simple, I've used titanium backup to make backups of my apps, but once restored some apps FC, and i can't be bothered to go through all apps one by one to check which are good and which need to be re-installed after every recovery I do. I know appbrain can show you what apps are installed, but i couldn't figure out a way to create a shopping list which i can use to re-install all the apps from the market after i do a rom isntall.
Thank you.
Rodi
erm..... as for apps i think there is only Titanium what can do batch restore.
re-downloading all your apps would really take a long time.
CM7 (ROM) does this, but do you really wanna swap ROMs for this reason, i doubt it.
can i just ask, when you use Titanium, are you restoring system data too ?? because this is the reason what causes FC's , i have suffered this before.
when using Titanium, its best to restore app + app data ONLY, system data is data kept from the previous ROM, therefor it causes issues (FC's) with the new ROM.
Yes, appbrain and the fast web installer does that.

For the time it takes, i don't mind, i'll set it on wifi and let it do it's thing, as for the question about app data and system data, well I don't backup system data, and when i restore i only restore apps only not even apps data, then on a 4-5 apps i restore app data.
markdj57: thx for the answer, can you give me a quick rundown on how to do it through appbrain? as i couldn't find a way to make it download the list of apps
Thank you fellas,
Rodi
AppBrain i download and frequently save the apps list .
Click on app and check install likewise on phone open AppBrain and install/Update .
Its not an automated process.
jje
Go to appbrain website and login using your google account.
Install appbrain and fast web installer from android market.
Sync with appbrain website using app.
On new firmware, do a sync. Appbrain detects new firmware so go to website and you will see 2 lists of apps. Copy all apps to new list and delete old list (optional) be careful you don't delete wrong list.
Enable fast web installer app.
Sync appbrain app. Hit the install button and all your apps will install. Sometimes takes a few times if all apps aren't available in market.
For a few days, some of my paid apps were not visible in the market but it sorted itself out eventually.
Hope this helps

[Q] Lost my Note FM Radio App

Dear All
I used Titanium Backup Pro to freeze both FM Radio app( the stock app) and the installed Accue weather app to stop them from keep them running in the background and eating memory , and I thought that when I need to run them I just hit the app to run, (this is what I thought and do not know if this is correct or no!!)
So I found that both apps are disappeared from my note, so I went to Titanium to defrost them. but after a success defrost I did not find them, so I made a restart and did find them, so I tried to make a restore but I did not find the FM Radio in the apps list since I did not made a backup for it, so how I can get it back
and also I made a restore for accue weather app but I did not find it after the restore
What is wrong

U on stock rom ? If you want i can put up the TiB files for you and you can put them in your sd card and restore using TiB. Also remember to push the app as a system app otherwise they wont work.
Cheers! Enjoy your Note.
Hit thanks if it helped!
It may be due to incompatibility of TB versions. If that is the case, do a power defrost of ALL frozen apps -> Go to batch, power defrost, reboot your device. After that you can manually freeze your unwanted apps one by one.

Idid the power defrost, and I found them back, thanks
Now , was what I did right but the results were wrong because of incompatibility of TB versions, how usually the freeze feature works?
Nothing wrong on your part. It is TB's issue between updates and that is how to tackle the problem. From now on you can normally freeze/defrost your apps.

thanks for your replay, I mean is it normal that when you freeze an app it will be disappears from the apps drawer? i tried now another app for a test and found that after freeze it disappeared, so how I can stop any app from working in the background but I can run it when I want only?
Yes, it is normal. As far as I know you can't stop any app from working in the background, unless you can find that option within the app itself.

so freeze is like delete the app without uninstall it, and when you want it back you just defrost it

Exactly. It will stop the app running in the background or even foreground. Always remember to check what you are freezing. If you freeze any system app which is required by system or some other app then the system or that app will start giving you force closes.
