[Q] Do I need the 3 button fix? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I press volume up and volume down simultaneously and then insert my usb cable, I eventually get into recovery mode. I am trying to get into download mode (the yellow icon telling me not to turn off target). Do I need to download a fix and if so, would the one I searched for below work? It's a brand new phone so I don't want to brick it and I'm wondering what steps I should take next. What is the latest method that works for the captivate to get into download mode? Thanks. I have an AT&T captivate on 2.2 firmware.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812434
(I have also tried Press and hold Volume-Down + Home + Power at the same time, but this just brings me into the phone regularly. I heard this was another way to do it)

That's odd, that should be the combo. Are you certain this is new phone that hadn't previously been on custom ROM? Is it kb1 or kb2 firmware?
Best option may be build, or buy a jig. Mobile Tech Videos has premade jigs for about $8, I think.
i897 running Mosaic VII

Do not flash the 3 button fix it will brick your device. Flash gingerbread bootloaders and it will fix it.

The answer to everything is Linux and Heimdall

Try this: turn off phone, pull out battery.. Plug in USB, hold both volume buttons, re-insert battery

yes, try this. And if you are on I9000 GB nitpickers then try [Volume Low pressed + Insert USB cable]

Help, choose wrong phone for ROM Manger and now stuck in Android Recovery Mode

Help guys.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate I897. Last night I installed the Clockworkmod ROM Manager in there and was messing around with it.
I choose my phone model to be the the I9000 and then I went into recovery mode to restore the previous ROM, but guess what? It went into recovery mode, the volume up and down buttons select the menu items and it asks me to hit the "OK key" to enter.
The Captivate doesn't have an OK key, it uses the power button. So the Android Recovery Mode here thinks the phone is a I9000 and I can't get it to do anything other than reboot into that mode.
I've tried using the ADB to try to get back into download mode but it's no longer reading the phone. The volume + power buttons to go into that mode has never worked for this phone either.
I'm at a loss at what to do. Is there anyway I can get out of recovery mode and into download mode or back to regular phone usage here? Would I need to take it to an android developer?
Thanks for your help.

Shut off the phone, open up odin(DG's flash to stock one) hold the power and the menu button. Once you see the ATT screen release the power while continuing to hold the volume buttons. Once odin recognizes your device flash to stock using the utility. Once this works donate to DG for saving your ass. Also, quit using ROM manager. Just use the update.zip method everyone else uses.
+1 for just using CWM update.zip It is sooo much easier/faster.
Thanks, but it didn't work. My Galaxy S is one of those where the volume + power buttons don't work to get it into download mode.
I did try power + menu as you suggest, but that doesn't work either.
try this
1. open odin.
2. With phone unplugged remove battery
3. with battery removed plug phone into pc via USB
4. with battery still removed simultaneously hold down Vol. + / - (forget about power button just hold down the two vol buttons)
5. While holding down the vol + / - insert the battery (keep the vol buttons down and hopefully DL screen comes up)

I cannot stress this enough.
Also, OP, if the above doesn't work, it might be USB jig time.
pwr isn't used to go into dload mode - that would turn your phone on.
Do this:
Open odin
Remove bat, sim, ext mem card
replace bat
hold vol -/+ and plug in data cable to computer
(should be download mode)
If that fails, then get yourself a jig... gotta search for the thread though - should cost a couple dollars. Then once you're back up... look up the thread to fix the 3 button combo.
You might try turning the phone off then hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER (not vol up/dwn/pwr) to get into download mode. Make sure to remove the sim and sd cards.
I bricked my phone over the weekend and had similar problem you did.the easiest way too get out in to download mode is a jig. Its easy and cheap to do.look on you tube under un brick captivate fort a tutorial.

Once you learn that trick you are on stock for like 2 minutes before you flash
Yeah I'm kind of a lurk but I've been around for about a month just flashing everything, and I had no idea it could be done like this till today. Going to make my next one even faster.

Nothing seems to work.
I'm going to try the jig method Wednesday morning. Wish me luck!
I tried the jig and it didn't work.
What happened was that it got me back into recovery mode, not download mode. Tried it several times. So unless I'm hitting the wrong points on the phone usb plugin (other than the last two), I'm hooped.
I tried the direct resistor wire to points in usb plugin method. I didn't try the one where I cut open a mini-usb cable and use the plug as a dongle, although I think it may get the same result.
What do you guys think?

Recovery with jig?

Since we can force dl mode with sa jig, is it possible for a differently configured jig to do the same with revovery mode?
What are you trying to do?
Think about it, if you need a jig that likely means your software on your phone is toast, so would be recovery
If the phone can boot you can use abd to force recovery

Thinking about folks that lose 3 button when flashing with odin. Not everyone is comfortable with adb (myself included). I was wondering IF it was possible.

you can unbrick you galaxy S without jtag or jig , here is the steps:
1- Start Odin
2- Attach the USB cable to the PC (DO NOT ATTACH IT TO THE PHONE)
3- Press and hold "Volume up" and "home" buttons
4- Attach the USB cable to the phone while holding both buttons
5- The phone will enter in download mode
Install a new firmware and everything is going to be OK

misinformation! Thanks for shutting it down. I'm soft bricked since Thurs. I do not need try what is incorrect..
While I ordered a jig Friday, I'm two hundred 3button + usb, + battery attempts later and only one DL mode, and that fruitless for other reasons..

Jig is amazing! Now Monday and I got the mail. One try, and into Odin 1.82 and I even completed the talon1.3 kernel load.. All in under 60 seconds, when I spent the whole weekend bruising my fingers trying to get into DL mode and worrying about whether I was more than soft bricked. I had gotten into DL mode twice in the 4 days with no progress in Odin.

Help...Cant get phone into download mode.

I used odin 1 click to get phone back to stock . Now my phone will not go into dl mode with any of the button combos. Also i can not get into recovery.Other than those 2 things the phone boots up and works.Any help please..
Which Odin one click ? And what were you running before you did the one click?
Use a jig for dl mode.
You tried Vol Down-Power and then after the splash screen releasing the power button and continuing to hold Vol Down.
Does your phone fully boot? If it does and you have adb on your computer. Turn on USB debugging, connect the phone to your computer via USB, and then use the command 'adb reboot download' without the '
Hope that works for you.
I used odin 1 click flashed phone back to eclair 2.1 I897UCJF6..The phone will boot into eclair and function properly but i cant get to dl mode or recovery.thanks for the responses
Its risky but IF YOU ARE ON 2.1 YOU CAN FLASH THE 3 BUTTON FIX, or flash i897 gingerbread bootloaders, but DO NOT FLASH THE 3 BUTTON FIX AFTER FLASHING THE GINGERBREAD BOOTLOADERS OR YOU WILL BE HARD BRICKED YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!!

I would recommend i897 GB bootloaders instead of the 3 button fix. It still fixes the button problem, but never, never, never flash the 3 button fix after flashing GB bootloaders. You have been warned again.

It should. Also, hold volume up + down, then plug in USB should also. Before you try that, restart your computer and pull the battery on the phone for a couple minutes before trying again. Have Odin open before you plug in the phone. Make sure you are using a pry on the back of the computer ( #1 on a laptop).
Followed ur directions still no go.You have any other ideas without a jig? Thanks

I had this a cpl of times, u'll have to reinstall drivers (uninstall first) ,or I use kies mini to reinstall drivers all the time when the pc won't recognize it (this usually happens after switching bootloaders), reboot ur pc and after that ur pc should pick it up (found new hardware). Once the drivers are loaded head back to odin and this time ur com port should light up.
Try this method for download mode... It's worked on every build captivate I've tried, even the fabled 1008 build.
1. Turn off phone, pull battery, sim card, sd card
2. Open ODIN (optional)
3. Plug in USB, then hold both volume buttons (NOT power button)
4. Re-insert battery while still holding volume buttons.
Phone should instantly boot into download mode

How to downgrade from ICS to Gingerbread?

ICS is good..but i feel that in GB ROMs i had a better control over my phone and so i want to down grade to GB....
I tried with Odin 1.7...sadly my phone is event recognised :'( in the Odin.
and i just tried flashing the ROM from recovery options ..the phone ended up cursing me....
looking for options and fyi key combos doesnt work in my cappy so i cant get in the dwd mode ......i tried from ROM manager also..its not going in dwd mode.....
any and all help and suggestions appreciated ....
You need ODIN or Heimdall. If it isn't recognize then you either have the wrong drivers or you set it up wrong.
i have tried on both ( i wanted to format the whole phone so that i can go back to the froyo) nothing worked.drivers installed , i can use the USB on / off also..but both dont recognise the phone.....and neither does adb......it just waits for the device o respond
Did you do a Nandroid backup with CWM before you flashed ICS? If you did then just do a restore. It worked for me. I had backed up CM7 before I flashed ICS. I had to go back to CM7 before I could flash a different ICS Rom.

Think you need to odin first. Since stock runs on different partition.

No...not nandroid ..i use Titanium ..so didnt do nandroid..
You will have to figure out how to get your phone in download mode before Odin or ham. Will work to recover your phone. If you have flashed a different boot loader to your phone the button combo may have changed.
Default combo is hold up+down+ power. Other ones I've come across is down+ power for download mode.
Otherwise I would suggest a USB jig to get download mode quickly.
Once you have that then using Odin PDA slot with a stock froyo image should work.

Isolate your fingers from the resistors, black tape or something. Make sure you are using the correct pins and be patient. All else fails you can have one shipped in for $15.

I can vouch for Captivate:
Hold Vol up and down. Press power and keep it on til white AT&T splash screen appears. Keep holding Vol Up and Down until CWM Recovery shows.
The same sequence for download but instead of Power On use USB cable insert into phone. Download appear much faster.
i can get in to the CWM options..but i cant get in to recovery..... even the AIO doesnt detect it..and so does the adb options....
You mean - you cannot get into download mode with Droid shoveling his own grave before fire squad?
yes.... even though i can give that options from other sources.i cannot get in to dwd mode..it alwasys boots in to recovery
your options are to either order a jig, send it out to josh, or
pull your battery
put it back in
do NOT turn on phone
hold volume up AND down at the same time
while holding both buttons insert the usb cable
continue to hold both volume buttons and wait for up to 10 seconds for download mode to activate
Guys,
I need some clarification. Im currently on GB but want to try ICS. I made a Nandroid backup of my phone. Now, if I wnat to downgrade from ICS to GB I can just restore the Nandroid? Or do I need first to go back to GB?
Can you guys give me the steps for this? OR will a simple Odin1click work to get me back to GB.
Thanks in advance and sorry if this was answered before, Im just a bit confused about the process.

Wrong kernel flashed with ROM

OK, so, I did something really stupid from not paying attention. On my captivate, I had slim bean(I9000) installed. I was flashing different kernels to find out which one suited me best. I accidentally flashed this corn kernel that I originally used to root with and now it refuses to fully boot through the kernel. It won't let me in to my recovery or download so that I can do another flash... black screen only. This happened just a few months ago and I have yet to get it fixed. Anyone ever do this before? My searches have lead me to dead ends, any ideas? Also, nothing happens when I attempt to power on while it's plugged in.

EDIT: Video is now viewable, sorry about that.

Well, if u cannot use the button combo to get in download mode, then u need a Jig.
See my signature link below for links on how to make a Jig and/or where to buy one.
Also, did ya take a look at this thread...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33227541
Do u remember what bootloaders u had flashed last ? i897 or i9000 ? Button combos are different for those, to get into download or recovery.

Yes, if you are on i9000 bootloaders:
Recovery = Volume Up + Power, continue holding for a few seconds after phone powers on then let go of power button
Download mode = power off and insert USB cable, hold Volume Down + Power while inserting battery
i897 bootloaders:
Recovery = Volume Up + Volume Down + Power, let go of power button shortly after phone powers on
Download mode: battery inserted, Volume Up + Volume Down while inserting USB cable
Other different methods for download mode
4-2ndtwin also has links to stock ROM/kernel in his sig. And the link in his post above has all the info you'll need about download/recovery modes anyway... thanks for being so thorough
