[Q] GB root needed without use of power button - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My experimental cappy has a broken power button. I was able to reassign it to the volume up button after flash it to stock froyo. I now want to jump to GB and ran into a problem. I was able to flash to GB kernel without any problems. I am unable to root because of the power button issue. I need root so I can reassign the power button. Is there a one button click, odin or heimdall possibly, that provides root at the same time as flashing GB kernel? When the phone reboots it can't go into recovery, but boot all the way.

Only way i've heard of to root a GB ROM is with the Fugu mod. It's a kernel swap method. With your power button problems, it makes it a little difficult.

Use a jig for download mode flash fugu kernel, pull battery, use jig for download mode, flash stock kernel (or whatever kernel you actually want to use) after.
Pretty simple. No power button needed.
Also with boog's gingerbread kernels you can use the capacitive buttons in cwm:
Menu = volume down
Home = volume up
Search = power

[Q] Power Button No Longer Works in Recovery

Okay so I was testing out the Molecule ROM along with SetiroN's i9000 Kernel. I installed the backlight notification app on the kernel's page and went to reboot. After the reboot I can no longer use the power button while in recovery mode and when I try to reflash back to stock with Odin I get a FAIL message while its checking the file system. Is it bricked or does someone know a way to fix this?
Are you able to get back into download mode successfully?
This happened to me with i9000 kernels. You should be able to flash back to stock no problem.
remove battery & sim and disconnect phone,
open odin,
put battery in and hold Vol down,
plug in USB,
Flash
Should work for you.

[Q] Flash FastyIII without cwm?

I am starting to experiment with GB ROMs, namely FastyIII, on my testing Captivate. This phone does not have a working power button, it's an eBay special. I was able to flash back to stock (Eclair) with no problems. I then found out how to reassign the power button to the volume up button. Worked fine. Problem is I lost that ability when I started flashing bootloaders and Boog Kernel. Is there a way to flash ROMs without using CWM? If not, I may have to get a second testing cappy and make one good one. This one has a good screen, just needs a power button. Thanks in advance for any replies.
On boogs kernel you can use the capacitive buttons in cwm.
Menu = up
Home = down
Search = select
Great to hear. Gave it a try, it works. Will proceed with flashing ROM tomorrow.

Recovery Mode (Samurai Kernel) whithout power button...

Hi... The power button in my Captivate doesn't work, so the problem is that i wanna flash Illuminance o Sparko ROM, both whith Samurai Kernel, but i don't know if i can use a software button (like, search or home) to use the recovery mode instead the power button......... Any ideas?
I'm using Apex 11 whith DarkCore and i can use the search button to select an option....
U can install the .tar version of the Samurai Kernel through Odin (u just need download mode of course) and then u can adb reboot recovery to get u into the CWM Recovery so u can install the Rom.
But u may want to Odin the i897 Gingerbread Bootloaders as well (recommended by IlluminatedOne per the Install instructions for his Rom), if u have the i9000 ones right now.
Once you get into recovery mode using 4-2ndtwin's method, you can use the soft keys to move around (at least you can in CWM 5). Menu is up, Home is down, Back is back, and Search is select.

[Q] Root method

Whats the best way to obtain root with out using ODIN??? Right now I cant get into ODIN because the power button is not functional. I tried to use the one click root but they didnt work. Kept getting stuck at step 7. I want root so I can use quick boot to reboot in to download mode. I tried to use the modifed 3e recovery but the batch kept giving me a fail. The thread said I didnt need to be rooted but when it looked for root it would just hang. So that didnt work either. Kind of stuck at this point of how to obtain root w/o odin. Its using offical ATT OTA 2.3.5 update. Never been rooted before. Thanks for the help.
To root gingerbread, you need to use the fugu kernel swap method. A simple search/looking through stickies will point you in the right direction. You will be using Odin, but you don't need to touch the power button. With the phone powered off,hold down both volume buttons and plug in a USB cable. You should be in download mode at that point

you dont need root to get into download mode... we dont use quick boot on captivate...
cant get into odin because no power button??? WTF... odin is on your computer. no power button required...
download mode.... no power button required...
so why do you THINK you need root?

Yes I read that the power button is not required but when I hold the volumes down it doesn't go into download mode. It goes in yo Android recovery (3e). Not sure what I'm doing wrong but I've been getting the same responses.. One click root don't work. Also when I pull battery ( to turn off phone) and pit it back in and hold the volumes up and down that's when I get in to the 3e recovery. Odin doesn't detect so I can't flash using Odin in this recovery. Thanks for the help but this phone was hard to root or get in download mode with the power button not working..he got an upgrade maybe I'll tell him to just get the galaxy note

Ppl keep saying that but hasn't worked for me. That combo just gets me into Android recovery 3e..i have read somewhrre that you should still beale to flash but Odin doesn't recognize so that's not an option...thanks for help anyway
Btw: the phone doesn't stay powered off. As soon as I put the battery in it turns on. With the cord in the phone and pressing the volume combo during that boot up it takes me recovery 3e

How about using "adb reboot download"?
Or maybe one of these other method:

recovery cannot be used as download mode. the soft brick screen can... PHONE /!\ PC screen.
when you updated your phone to gingerbread did you flash the captivate bootloaders or the i9000 bootloaders????
i9000 bootloaders could be your problem. download mode button combo uses power and vol dn

Not sure if you've tried this, but take out the battery, hold volume buttons, insert usb, then insert battery.
It would seem that the problem is in the broken power button...it's pressed all the time, so when using the correct button combo for download mode, it doesn't work because of the power button always being pressed.
Op, rooting your phone won't fix your power Button.
You could install Android sdk, and use adb to boot into download fwiw....
You should check out mobiletechvideos.com they offer a power button replacement service.

n7000 battery power button problem

I experienced power button problem, after flashing latest build (4.4.2 on note n7000) my phone rebooted and and once it got back in system I couldnt turn off screen from power button or shut down phone, so i tried to remove battery and start again. But it is the same. So i didnt know what to do, i installed reboot recovery app to try to flash earlier build and from philz kernel (touch based) flashed raw4 kernel and now in recovery my power button stilll dont work, I can not flash anything I cant reboot in sistem . What to do?
p.s. I tried removing a battery and as soon as i inserted it the phone boots in recovery automaticly (like the power buttton is pressed all the time ?), and still power button wont work
I can go into download mode with Volume up and home button (and again like power button is all the time presed but i am not pressing it) and i could go to download mode and i have odin 1.85 on my computer and i could flash raw5 kernel or asylum kernel just to boot in system and use OS, but RAW5 iz ZIP extension like ASYlum,( i guess i need tar file extensions for odin?) so i dont know what to do via odin? What do you think? And thank you so much.. for you time reading this.
