I have put together some steps to take your fresh KA6 2.2 Official update and add Root and ClockworkMod Recovery. It may look hard, but should only take a couple minutes.
This is without ODIN or ROMS.
Steps:
0. Have yourself a T-Mobile Vibrant and PC Running Windows.
1. Use SuperOneClick (latest) to root phone. When you run the application, click the first button on the left and wait for the process to complete. Details will be scrolling in the middle window.(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682)
2. Use a file manager (ROOT EXPLORER) or adb with root access to mount /system/ and remove bloatware (SLACKERRADIO and AMAZONMP3 and such) from /system/app/
2a. TOTAL NOOBS: Get SUPER MANAGER from the market (FREE). Then grant it root by going into SUPER MANAGER and selecting File Manager > [Menu BUTTON] > Setup > Enable ROOT function. Then go up levels, the top button on the file manager which will take you up a directory, until you get to / and scroll to the bottom and select [system]. Then select [app]. Then click [Menu BUTTON] > Switch System to R/W and press R/W. Scroll down and long press the slackerradio.apk to delete. You can do this too amazon market to delete and other useless apps.
3. YOU NEED STEP 2 TO DO THIS STEP! Install Busybox from Market and run Busybox Installer to ensure its properly working and the latest is installed.
4. Run SuperOneClick again to place phone into shell root ADB (Second button from the left). Allow the process to run and then a pop up will say something about rebooting the phone. DO NOT DO THIS, continue on to the next step.
5. While in shell root from the previous step, run (3e) to (2e) modified recovery script. The instructions are simple. Download, unzip, and run the batch file found inside. This is ran from the COMPUTER NOT YOUR PHONE. Use the menu system to complete and then reboot as recommended. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423).
5a. NOT NOOBS: you can copy over the recovery yourself to /system/bin as mentioned by some commenters. If you do not know what this is, then ignore it.
6. Remove any update.zip files from /sdcard/ and also remove any ClockworkMod directories using your favorite file manager or by mounting to a computer with a wire and activating the drive for My Computer. This is the internal one, not external.
7. Use ROM MANAGER from market to install ClockworkMod Recovery and reboot. This is free to download. When you launch, select the top item to install the recovery and then a menu will pop up to choose the phone you have. Happily select Vibrant. Once that's done, select reboot into recover right below that.
8. Re-install packages and it should reboot. You can navigate the menu using VOL UP AND DOWN and power to select.
9. Re-install packages again and it should boot into Clockwork Recovery. It should change form BLUE TO GREEN
ALL DONE.
That should do it for ya! Let me know if it worked out. Please follow all steps and don't cut corners.
Should you need to get back to ClockworkMod Recovery, you can use "adb reboot recovery" and re-install packages, or reboot into recovery with ROM MANAGER.

Side note: I do step 4 because from my experience, I had trouble getting the modified 3e script to get root. Figured might as well just give it root to begin with.

Reinstalling packages does not seem to work for me. Every time I click it and it reboots it keeps going into the samsung recovery menu... Help?
Does it give an error for signing or just looks like its working then reboots?

Double check if there is a update.zip and clockworkmod folder with a zip in it on your internal memory. I think the external card changed directories with the 2.2 update.
EDIT: infact, remove any update.zip and clockwork folder from the internal memory and run ROM MANAGER again and fresh download the clockwork 2.5.1.2. then check and confirm its on the internal. should be /sdcard/
once its confirmed there, then try again to reboot into recovery with rom manager

Tried that, still can't get into clockwork recovery...

I would highly suggest doing that step. The system is full to begin with. Use Root Explorer and grant access, then mount system into r/w and remove the stupid stuff. You should do this to get Busybox on (AS IN BEFORE YOU INSTALL BUSYBOX)

4. Run SuperOneClick again to place phone into root shell ADB
For this step, run SuperOneClick from before, the same you used to root. The second button says "Shell Root". Click that Wait for it to say you have shell root until you reset.
5. Run (3e) to (2e) modified recovery script (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423)
Just download the attachment in the first post and follow instructions. Its fairly simple process. Keep in mind, this may not work unless your phone is shell root from step 4

If you are new to rooting your phone, there are simple ways to go about getting clockwork mod onto your LG thrill
You can root it easily with the 1 click root tool (I dont have the link on hand) after installing the LG Drivers from the LG Website.
Then, Download Rootexplorer, Rom manager (which i think is installed with 1 click root along with superuser)
First thing, download the recovery.img here after installing ADB guide is located here
After downloading recovery image, go to your pc's user folder C:\users\yourname and move it to there, that way there is no mistaking its location for adb
Now, on your phone you first need to go into root explorer, go to the /data folder, long click and go to permissions and select all available boxes and also make sure your device is in R/W mode not R/O mode.
Run CMD as administrator and do the following:
adb push recovery.img /data
then type:
SU
(this makes superuser active)
then:
dd if=/data/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p6 bs=4096
then after clockwork is flashed to finalize the settings type:
rm /data/recovery.img
reboot
Presto, Clockwork Mod is installed, remember you can access the clockwork menu via rom manager menu, or 3D+Volume Down +Power releasing the power button when the LG screen appears.
I will soon post onto this, how to update to gingerbread just making sure it works well on my own first. also, working on ICS as well.

i have install CWM by as your guide. but when i use Rom Manager to Back up , message pop up that install CWM first to complete this action. i am new to these things.

I tried installing a custom ROM on my 7310 and it had issues. I have tried installing the original ICS from the sammyfirmware site using ODIN. Now I have a boot loop. I think I need to repartition, but when I click the repartition checkbox in ODIN I get an error.
Do I need to repartition? If so, how do I do it? If not, how do I fix this error?

I used CWM to flash AOSP 4.1.2. It seemed to work fine for a day or two, but then it needed charging (as normal). I let it charge over night and in the morning it had less battery. I figured the charger or cable were flaky so I tried another set on another outlet and same thing. Then it finally ran out of battery. I let it charge again over night and when I tried to turn it on it was really slow. The boot animation was only 1 frame every couple seconds. It would eventually boot all the way up, but it was still REALLY slow. So I went into CWM and reflashed the same ROM. Then I got a boot loop of the boot animation. I couldn't get into CWM any more, so then I went into download mode and flashed the official firmware and flashed it with ODIN.

Now when I turn it on it just says, "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
I can flash again with ODIN and it will get to the Samsung boot animation and just pulse SAMSUNG.

If I hold power and volume down I can get into download mode or Samsung recovery, not CWM, and power with volume up doesn't do anything.

I don't know anything about adb and I'm not sure what I would be looking for. Is there a tutorial I can follow somewhere?

Sorry I'm not allowed to post links yet as I am also very fresh. But I've underlined the addresses so you should be able to find them
I just spent the best of 2 days trying to solve a similar issue - my 8.9 P7300 kept running in boot loop. It had been running ICS stable for several weeks, then suddenly started to loop boot for no good reason. Anyway - you need two programs installed on your computer as well as USB drivers for your tablet. The two programs are Odin and SDK developer package. Odin3 v 1,87 and 1.85 are found here: filecrop.com/Odin-1.87 - try some of the links, one of them should work without having to type a password. The SDK is found here: developer.android.com/sdk You can find more about how to use the developer package on that site as well, but I installed as support for Android 2.1 through to 4.1
Also install the USB driver files for your tablet on your PC. For example from here: xpdrivers.com/usb/_1_24.cfm?gclid=CL2iDs7MCFWF7cAodxFYANQ
You also need the following recovery files which you can find by searching the developer forum for galaxy tab 8.9:
ClockworkMod_Recovery_v5.5.0.4.tar
P73xx_Stock_Recovery.tar
Clockwork_Recovery_6.0.0.8_GT-P7300.zip
and finally a ROM of your choice, for example the ICS rom cm-9-20121028-NIGHTLY-p5.zip that I just used. You can find the latest official ICS ROM's here get.cm/?device=p5
Now - hold down the volume down button on one of the boot cycles. You should now get into a menu with two choices - Download and Recovery. Default is "Download" - if you press volume down you switch between the two choices. Press volume up to select the choice you want.
First you want to select the "Download" option. Then connect your tablet to your PC. The drivers should now install and your tablet should read that you are connected.
Now start Odin3. Click the PDA button and select your P73xx_Stock_Recovery.tar file. Then press Start.
Once finished the tablet will reboot, and you now need to once again get into the recovery menu. Now select the recovery option, not the download menu. You get into the stock recovery menu where you navigate with the volume buttons and select choices with the power button. Do a full factory reset and wipe the cache. WARNING - you will loose ALL your data, but it'either that or stick to a bricked tablet so.... You will also loose your root access,m which is why the next step is needed.
Now that everything is wiped clean you can use Odin again in "download mode" to install ClockworkMod_Recovery_v5.5.0.4.tar with the same procedure as before. You now have root access.
Reboot again and once again into the recovery mode (not download mode). Once you get into the CWM recovery menu you are ready for the final step, which is to install your new operating system.
Go to your SDK installation folder and find the folder named "platform-tools".
First you want to copy two files into this folder (provided you want to install Cynaogen Mod 9):
Clockwork_Recovery_6.0.0.8_GT-P7300.zip
and
Your ROM file of choice
Press shift and right-click in that folder and select "Open command window here". In the command prompt write
adb shell
Note - I had some problems here which was caused by lack of permissions. On your tablet in the CWM menu there should be a choice under the advanced menu for fixing permissions. Use that and you should be able to get into the terminal shell afterwards with the adb shell command
Now write the following command sequence:
• mount /data (don't worry if you get an error message - it means the folder is already mounted)
• cd /data
• mkdir media (if you get an error message saying the folder already exists, that's also OK!)
• exit
• adb push Clockwork_Recovery_6.0.0.8_GT-P7300.zip /data/media
Now you may have to wait a little while until your command prompt is back confirming that the file was uploaded.
Now on your tablet go to the menu point "install zip from sdcard" and find your CWM file that you just uploaded and run that.
Reboot once again into the "recovery mode" - we are now nearly finished.
Run the above push command again from the computer terminal window, this time to upload the ROM file you want to install. (the command is adb push [filename].zip /data/media)
Now on your CWM recovery menu once again run the zip file you just uploaded from the "install zip from sdcard" menu
When completed and you now reboot you should have a completely fresh android installation. Hope this helps.

Don't ever try to 'repartion unless you really know what you're doing. You're soft bricked. Repartion and you'll hard brick.
I'd go back and get hc from sammobile and flash that with Odin. Ics has had some problems.

Agreed - my procedure avoids manual repartitioning - I tried lots of other procedures but none worked. I think my data partition had become corrupt because I kept getting error messages. My first try was to recover with my cwm recovery file I made originally but I kept getting back to the boot loop .

After bootloop just go to recrovery mode then factory riset ... its 100% WORK

I followed the steps outlined by mobjunky and was able to get an official Honeycomb ROM installed, boot the official and copy my custom ROM and CWM 6.0.0.8 on it. Then install CWM 5.4.0.4 followed by 6.0.0.8.
Now my problem is that any custom ROM I put on there just does a boot screen loop. I tried CM10 and the latest AOSP. To install the ROMs I just booted into CWM, installed the ROM from zip, then installed the gapps. I've tried with and without formatting the cache, user data, and Dalkiv, same results.
What am I doing wrong? I have loaded tons of ROMs on this before without any issues, then all of a sudden I can't get anything except official loaded.

I just spent the best of 2 days trying to solve a similar issue - my 8.9 P7300 kept running in boot loop. It had been running ICS stable for several weeks, then suddenly started to loop boot for no good reason. Anyway - you need two programs installed on your computer as well as USB drivers for your tablet. The two programs are Odin and SDK developer package. Odin3 v 1,87 and 1.85 are found here: filecrop.com/Odin-1.87 - try some of the links, one of them should work without having to type a password. The SDK is found here: developer.android.com/sdk You can find more about how to use the developer package on that site as well, but I installed as support for Android 2.1 through to 4.1
Also install the USB driver files for your tablet on your PC. For example from here: xpdrivers.com/usb/_1_24.cfm?gclid=CL2iDs7MCFWF7cAodxFYANQ
You also need the following recovery files which you can find by searching the developer forum for galaxy tab 8.9:
ClockworkMod_Recovery_v5.5.0.4.tar
P73xx_Stock_Recovery.tar
Clockwork_Recovery_6.0.0.8_GT-P7300.zip
and finally a ROM of your choice, for example the ICS rom cm-9-20121028-NIGHTLY-p5.zip that I just used. You can find the latest official ICS ROM's here get.cm/?device=p5
Now - hold down the volume down button on one of the boot cycles. You should now get into a menu with two choices - Download and Recovery. Default is "Download" - if you press volume down you switch between the two choices. Press volume up to select the choice you want.
First you want to select the "Download" option. Then connect your tablet to your PC. The drivers should now install and your tablet should read that you are connected.
Now start Odin3. Click the PDA button and select your P73xx_Stock_Recovery.tar file. Then press Start.
Once finished the tablet will reboot, and you now need to once again get into the recovery menu. Now select the recovery option, not the download menu. You get into the stock recovery menu where you navigate with the volume buttons and select choices with the power button. Do a full factory reset and wipe the cache. WARNING - you will loose ALL your data, but it'either that or stick to a bricked tablet so.... You will also loose your root access,m which is why the next step is needed.
Now that everything is wiped clean you can use Odin again in "download mode" to install ClockworkMod_Recovery_v5.5.0.4.tar with the same procedure as before. You now have root access.
Reboot again and once again into the recovery mode (not download mode). Once you get into the CWM recovery menu you are ready for the final step, which is to install your new operating system.
Go to your SDK installation folder and find the folder named "platform-tools".
First you want to copy two files into this folder (provided you want to install Cynaogen Mod 9):
Clockwork_Recovery_6.0.0.8_GT-P7300.zip
and
Your ROM file of choice
Press shift and right-click in that folder and select "Open command window here". In the command prompt write
adb shell
Note - I had some problems here which was caused by lack of permissions. On your tablet in the CWM menu there should be a choice under the advanced menu for fixing permissions. Use that and you should be able to get into the terminal shell afterwards with the adb shell command
Now write the following command sequence:
• mount /data (don't worry if you get an error message - it means the folder is already mounted)
• cd /data
• mkdir media (if you get an error message saying the folder already exists, that's also OK!)
• exit
• adb push Clockwork_Recovery_6.0.0.8_GT-P7300.zip /data/media
Now you may have to wait a little while until your command prompt is back confirming that the file was uploaded.
Now on your tablet go to the menu point "install zip from sdcard" and find your CWM file that you just uploaded and run that.
Reboot once again into the "recovery mode" - we are now nearly finished.
Run the above push command again from the computer terminal window, this time to upload the ROM file you want to install. (the command is adb push [filename].zip /data/media)
Now on your CWM recovery menu once again run the zip file you just uploaded from the "install zip from sdcard" menu
When completed and you now reboot you should have a completely fresh android installation. Hope this helps.

Gee thanks. This saved my tab. I'd almost given up on it and then voila.
i just purchased an HTC ONE and was successful in unlocking and installing TWRP..whereas i flashed TWRP via fastboot...
when i rebooted into recovery everything was as good as expected but ran into a problem installing superuser via recovery..
when i start recovery and i come to the start screen,,,i click on install but cannot access the superuser.zip file..it does not find the superuser.zip file...and if i try to browse for that file it will not let me mount the storage,,,it will only let me mount the internal storage where the superuser file is not located...
when i click on "install zip from sdcard" it shows E:cant mount /cache/recovery/command as well as
E:can't mount /external_sd
i have tried to install different recoveries and they seem to work fine but i get the same thing when i try to install superuser.zip
it seems to me that i am not able to access that specific partition where the .zip files reside
hopefully i am just overlooking something simple but i've been round and round and cant seem to work it out..

Try using the toolkit to sideload a Sense-based ROM, they come already rooted.

there has to be someone with this same issue..

My thinking is that you wouldn't have to install superuser.zip - the ROM has it pre-installed already. Where /what folder have you saved the superuser.zip you're trying to install? Also, try clearing cache/davlik cache
All-In-One Toolkit try it again install cwm then permanent root i had your problem that worked for me had to do it 3 times to push super user

i have my device unlocked and TWRP successfully installed
i put this file (Android_Revolution_HD_Root_and_BusyBox.zip) on my thumb drive and tried to install it from OTG but with no success..when i do that i lose my recovery and have to reinstall that via fastboot
i just tried the AIO toolkit again to reinstall TWRP and to have it install the superuser files...
everything goes as planned but after the TWRP install it reboots onto fastboot where i am supposed to enter recovery,,,but when i do it says that i am entering recovery but never does,,,therefore it will not install the superuser files..
the only other way i can get a successful recovery install is if i flash one via fastboot,,,but then i cant find a way to install superuser ,,once i enter recovery when i click to install a superuser.zip file i cannot find the one i placed on my phone ...
in the video tutorials it shows that when i chose to install the superuser.zip file i navigate to the download folder,,,,but there is not such folder.
i placed the superuser.zip file on a thumb drive and navigated to it and clicked on it to install,,,it said that it installed but it didnt,,,i assume thats because it needs to be placed in a system folder

come to find out that the partitions needed are hidden and are set so where one cannot write to them...

I've been trying for sometime now to install a custom rom (CM11 or anything else for that matter) on my Atrix HD. I got as far a unlocking my boot loader so now every time I reboot, I get a scary warning message saying, my phone has been tampered with.
I've made several attempts to install CWM and even though it seems to install, if I try to boot my phone by holding the power and volume down buttons at the same time, it seems to do nothing, or it will just boot normally. I did try to hold down the power and volume up and volume down buttons and that leads to a menu. One of the options was recovery. I selected that, but then a display of android robot with a red triangle.
Can anyone give me some tips on what I'm doing wrong. I'm a programmer, but I have no experience with android, so you can stay technical but not too "android specific" technical.

Are you installing it via fastboot? Once you flash recovery, do not allow the phone the reboot. Try and boot into recovery.
If you still can boot into cwm, boot the phone, install Root Explorer, and rename recovery.sh to recovery.sh.bak, boot to fastboot, install cwm, and boot into cwm.

These are the commands I used.
adb devices
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot devices
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot
Where recovery.img was the CWM one.
Based on another thread, I attempted to rename ~/system/etc/install_recovery.sh, but even though I'm rooted, ES File Explorer not Root File Explore is able to rename that file.
Any help would be appreciated.

After renaming the file, stock recovery still comse up?
Sorry, there was a typo. I was NOT able to rename the file.
Use root explorer to do it. That's what I did.

I had tried that.
I had installed
ES File Explorer
Root File Explorer
Root File Manager Explorer
All seemed to either give an error or just not change the name. Is there a trick? I'm pretty sure my phone is rooted since I am prompted to ask permission to do these things. I think if I can get past this the renaming issue, I may actually be able to install a new rom. Can you help?

Can you be more specific about "root explorer" which app is it. I've used a couple of root file explorers and none of them can seem to rename /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.
I tried to use Root File Manager to change the permissions on that file to have write permissions. The problem is that it says it does, but then when I look again, it's unchecked.
I checked the /system/etc folder and it has write permissions for "owner". I tried to create a test folder in it. It said it was granted permission, but in the end, the test folder was not created.
Maybe my phone is not rooted properly?
I'm not sure at which point in the rooting process I got this, but I have an app named "#SuperSU". If I open it and check it's logs, I can now see an error message saying "SuperSU Pro is required for this feature". Did I screw up with rooting? Should I use something else. Any help to remedy this would be greatly appreciated.

I upgraded to SuperSU Pro. It was only $2.50. Now the log says, "Unable to chmod /system/etc/install-recovery.sh: Read-only file system"
This happened when trying to give write permissions to that file. Am I doing something wrong?
if your adb is setup and working try using this command in adb 'adb reboot recovery' and see if the phones boots to little android with its heart open given a excalmation mark there press all three buttons at the same time and recovery should open

I did that and when the screen you described displayed, pressed the power, and center of the volume up and down rocker switch so I can get but up and down. After a few seconds the screen went blank and I let go. The phone then just booted normally without going into recovery.

Thanks. I purchased that app and when I tried to set the permissions of the file it prompted to mount the volume with write permissions. Once it did that, everything else worked.
