Through xda tv i came to know about this very great application for android and i think it needed to be talked about
as the Description for iRis at Market says
iris. makes your phone talk on topics ranging from Einstein to Mozart.
Yeah, Iris is siri in reverse. Inspired from the iPhone feature Siri, iris interacts with you in voice.
Gone are the days when you "Google searched" for information.
Just "ask" iris. She will talk to you on any topic. Ranging from Philosophy, Culture, History, science to general conversation.
Note: You need to have "Voice Search" and "TTS library" installed in your phone for iris. to work. Most of the phones have these pre-installed, if not please install them from Android market before you try iris.
so the problem i should let u note that ... MI410's Voice Search Is very bad and most of the time on the stock rom of mi410 TTS Liabrary jst dont get installed no matter how many times u install it .. and daa in the settings also it does not give option to install ... dumb phone
I saw it when i was googling ICS , tried it but right now people are sleeping here so it cant hear me properly
works fine on my MI 410 spice stock rom. I tried iris and Assistant.
Assistant seems to be better as it has persistent conversations like Siri.

Is there such an app for Android? I want to scan text with the camera and be able to email it. Didn't find anything on the market with those search terms (text scanner).
Look for DocScanner, for example.
The feature you're looking is called OCR - Optical Character Recognition. I suggest searching the net instead of the market.
Thanks for your input. Never knew or heard that term before. I learn something new everyday!

It doesn't work on 2.2 unfortunately but does have Nexus one support so most likely works just fine on 2.1
I love ICS. There are too many things that make it easier to use than GB, but the one thing that is making me want to change back is the lack of a reliable voice control app.
My favorite for GB was Choice Dialer Plus, especially because it was mostly accurate and did not need a data connection. If there was an ICS app like this I haven't found it.
Vlingo and it's offshoot, voice talk, are pretty good, but still not as reliable or usable as CDP was on GB.
What's your choice of app for this need?
Basic needs I consider valuable for voice control:
-dial like choicedialerplus, without using data connection
-bluetooth initiated
-dial numbers
-voice confirm
- no screen touch needed to select
-send texts
-open apps
-find local places
-start navigate
TRIED:
Vlingo-****
good-recognition,confirm in car mode
bad-complex
VoicetoGo-****
good-recognition,confirm in car mode
bad-have to choose from list
AIVC-****
good-siri like, BT mic,nicevoice,
bad-touch select for choices, end up having to use button on BT bad timing.
VoiceControl-
good-recognition, great support from developer
bad-takes too long to look up contact, 'initializatin in progress" everytime both being addressed
Evi-
good-siri like
bad-no bt, no dial
VoiceSearch(google)-**
good-dials#s,
bad-cant initiate from button or bt,no settings, selects any name matching one spoken
AVX-*
good-
bad-lots of text, have to push buttons
SpeaktoIt Assistant
good-customizable, recognition
bad-no BT
Trying:
Dragon Go
Eva
iris
Andy
Skyvi
Cyberon

Yes, that one's pretty good. I couldn't get it to work with my BT, though and when I asked the developer was told it was coming in the future. I'd also like to see one of these apps that doesn't take up the screen when activated so I could read info while speaking or waiting for a result.
I really am surprised that ICS doesn't have more compatible alternatives for this as it is definitely the way forward and ios has gotten a great head start.
SpeaktoIt! I love my Sam! Made him look just like someone I know and he is very amusing, I think that is the only voice assistant app that actually has potential. What it needs is BT and more direct controls with less involvement, for example, I want it to send texts messages just by saying the name of the recipient, the text and that's it, otherwise it defeats the purpose of voice control. Other than that I found it to be very accurate, even with my accent. I also prefer the avatar interface to just generic exchange.
Some of Sam's sayings:
- Sam, I think you are hot
- You are not so bad yourself, boss
- How about we have sex?
- Lets keep it professional, boss
Aww, bless his little electronic heart. My mom got offended on his behalf when I got frustrated and told him to shut the hell up. She thought I am being rude!!!! Hahahaha.
not sure why they don't have BT avaialbility on such a good piece of work.
I'm testing a new voice control for the developer and hopefully that will shape up as it's excellent now with some annoying delays.

Had done that, but it did not show up

Possible solutions:
- Uninstall all other voice control apps and install again
- Sometimes apps icon doesn't appear but are installed in the system, so check that in settings>apps
-Re-download the file and install again
- It may be ROM related, I have used it in PARANOIDANDROID HD2 [v1.0] [TABLET/HYBRID] ROM
Hacked Galaxy SIII SVoice (Voice Talk)

Hi,
So I'm having a lot of trouble trying to configure a solution to this problem! When I text my girlfriend who is French, her iPhone can't receive accented characters, it instead replaces them with other characters. I presume this is a problem with the Unicode settings on my phone but can't find much information on this topic anywhere! I have a Samsung galaxy s i9000 international triband, baseband I900XXJVT running cm10.1.3 (android 4.2.2). I live in.new Zealand and I'm with 2degrees as my provider, have recently switched from skinny due to band issues. Any help would be much apprecjated ! Thanks!!
Hi There,
dont know if i can really help.
i'm also on 2degrees, were the messages working correctly on skinny?
have you tried texting the same message to another Iphone? or another phone?
and/or texed from another phone to her Iphone?

Yes, I have tried many different phones. I'm sure its not the network now, so more looking at trying to see how i can change the settings on my phone, but there seems to be nothing? Can it be that the version of ROM i'm running is the problem and I need to change ROM's?

If you have tried different phones i'd say the likelihood of it being a ROM issue drops through the floor.
Unless by complete coincidence all the other phones you used were running the same ROM (or had the exactly the same settings).
Also if everything worked on skinny that would make me lean toward it being a carrier issue.
I did a quick Google and came up with this article from Apple, sounds very similar to what you have.
*** I cant post a link yet
uummm ... go to apple, then support that search "SMS messages may display incorrectly on other devices"
the article should come up at the top of the list.
hope that helps.

Thanks for your help on this! I think you may be correct with the ROM theory, I will just have to change my rom and find out!

no problem,
its the small things that are the biggest the bum.
*oh (light bulb moment) have you tried sending a MMS instead of a text? or using whatsapp or similar?
could be a short term work around.
best of luck.
@nippynz it will work with Hangouts or Gmail, Yahoo etc.
It is BTW Apple's speciality to break purposely the compatibility between their products and Android or PC. Not even JPEG or MP3 file data transfer with Bluetooth will work between Android and iPhone. Apple sucks!
tetakpatalked from Nexus 7 flo
Came from a Nexus4 to Z3C, and my only and biggest dissapointment is the missing google dialer - I was not aware it is not available to non-nexus(play edition) phones. The KitKat dialer with quick local business-search is very handy, and I desperately want it back. I see that it can be done with root, but I also see rooting Z3 causes some issues with DRMs and such.
Does anyone know a way to get the google dialer working without root, or will we soon get a root method without compromising?
Use a third party dialer like dialer+ or ex dialer?

As far as I know this will not give the functionality I'm after?
The google dialer gives me ALL businesses that's not in my contacts(and has caller ID built-in):

The best replacement I've found is TrueDialler, its fairly similar in functionality in that it can tell you who is calling and it looks fairly stock like. You can use google search to get the same phone numbers you saw in the phone app.
any idea why this feature hasn't been rolled out more widely across non Nexus devices? Seems strange that Google would keep this to itself, and if they aren't keeping it to themselves I don't understand why other companies wouldn't integrate it.

No idea, but i also find it odd that a company like Sony would implement such a crummy dialer app when the stock Google version is so good. The Xperia dialer is THE worst of the altogether pretty bad basic apps Sony gives us (calendar, messaging, contacts etc.).

The exact part i miss is the auto search for businesses direct from dialer, does that function in truedialler? Incoming caller ID I already have through another domestic app.
The truedialer does search..! I love you, arj154! Just noe thing; do you know how to get special characters, æøå?

lol no problem, im not sure how to do special characters in truedialler and it looks like you cant do it for now but it might be something to ask the developers about, they could possibly add it in a future update. The only other way around it is possbily to search for those in google now.
Hi all.
I just loaded Repulsa's v5.1 ROM and I'm not getting the voice to text that I'd prefer. Typically when I use, say, google voice, the text is typed as I speak, directly into the text box. Right now I'm getting the below picture, where it then gives you choices regarding what you said (for accuracy). It's very slow this way.
All texting programs are having the same problem.
This is difficult to describe, but does anyone have a solution?
I did install the Google App, since VTT does not work at all without it.
Thank you!
you should ask that question in that Rom thread, not here
Thank goodness Android is mature and feature rich enough I don't have to flash ROM's anymore! I'm glad those days are over for me lol. I spent a lot of time on it.

Of course, and I have. But this could lead to answers that could help others as well. But thank you.
I found the solution, for anyone looking for it in the future:
Firstly; the Google app is required (Play Store), then you must turn on Google Voice Typing: Language and Input/ On-Screen Keyboard/ Manage Keyboards/ Google Voice Typing, turn ON.
Voilà.
