Ext3 and Verizon gb leak. - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I looked all over for an answer to this. I'm running the stock leaked Verizon GB update and I was wondering if the ext3 format would apply or even be possible with the stock kernel. I'm extremely happy with the gb update and I'm completely dumbfounded as to why this isn't out yet? Skype works great and is the main reason I updated. Anyhow, thoughts about the ext3?
Cheers,
Rob

The stock kernels, unless it's a custom modded stock kernel, will not support the ext4 filesystem.

Cool, thanks for the answer!

I agree. I did it yesterday and I have gone from 1004 to 1750+ on quadrant. You can actually see and notice the difference with normal use.

Stock kk4 kernel w/voodoo sound??

I dont know if its me but I cant seem to get the quality search results on the app, that I can get online. I dont have a readily available computer, thats why I cant always search on one. Anyway......
I just flashed kk4. Am I overlooking an available kernel with voodoo sound/lagfix supported?

Samurai kernel will get you lagfix.
To get voodoo sound you'll have to buy the paid version.

Thank you very much. I was worried samuri was ext4, then I found an article saying GB is ext4, I was unaware. Also I couldn't remember if kernel version had to match build, but samuri is kk4 anyway.

Captivate Gingerbread runs on RFS. We convert to ext2 or ext4 with Voodoo/kernel.
Oh ok. Well maybe I missed something in the article then. It had said Gingerbread forward would be ext4. Either way, flashed samuri, things run great.

SGS II run on ext4. Maybe the official release it will run ext4, but I doubt it all the leaks are on RFS

That doesn't answer his freaking question. I have a p1000 also which I bought already rooted and I have no idea what it is on. Knowing how to determine what you are on would be very helpful. You see every ROM thread talk about both but you never see anything on how to figure out which one you are on.

type 'mount' in terminal emulator
if you have MTD, your /system is mounted from /dev/block/mtdblockX
'cat /proc/mtd' give you details for the mounts.

Are you serious? He said he was on overcome and asking does he have mtd or not.
My answer clearly indicate that since he wasn't on cm9 , he has no mtd.
Of course by now there is aokp mtd too.
But still, no overcome with mtd.
If you have question, just post a new thread, no need to bash me for something I answered in good faith LAST MONTH.

Like another post has been said, For OP if you dont mind try type mount in your terminal or you can look into /proc directory, have mtd file or not?

No. Overcome never has mtd.
Only bml but uses ext4 fs.
Need to say this so no newbies confused.
If you are on overcome, you are on bml.

Ah i see, because i follow stimpz0r guide for flashing aokp rom and he say to flashing with overcome first if you come from non mtd so i think overcome using mtd and after that we can flash aokp rom based on mtd....

you need to restock and install Overcome before attempting to install the MTD based rom. restocking and installing Overcome (or at the very least the Overcome Kernel) is necessary to ensure that there are no problems with the conversion to MTD (restock ensures a clean system and partitions, flashing overcome's kernel gives us an updated CWM recovery which is needed to flash an MTD rom
It is clear that overcome is bml not mtd, and at least you need overcome kernel to have updated CWM recovery for conversion to mtd

Where is the OP?

So if I am not on ICS roms, that would mean I have a non-mtd. But what are the non-mtd's that I may have on my ROM? if I am on a 2.3.6 based ROM.. what do I have?
is MTD a file system like window's fat32 and NTFS, or is it something else?
1) No. MTD is not a file system. it is a partition scheme.
Just like MBR for most windows system and old linuxes and the new GUID partition table in OS X and newer linuxes.
The MBR is the one that let you have up to 4 primary partitions (due to a 2-bit room for definition, I think) and the rest have to be in extended/logical partition.
So, BML is proprietary Samsung, and MTD is open source one.
Filesystems is fat, fat32, ntfs, ext2, ext3, ext4, yaffs2, HPFS, you get the idea.
2) yes, before ICS I doubt there is a custom rom for gtab that has MTD. So Gingerbread is 99.9% likely non MTD.
Tricky to find what ROM you have. Even the one that has touchwiz, could be stock, overcome, acudroid.
Non touchwiz one could be CM7, BOCA, hyperdroid, etc..
I don't know how to fingerprint them, but the Setting | About may tell a lot.
See which kernel is that listed there and all other version strings there and google them, you may find a match.
Priyana, thanks for the detail yet simple explanation regarding types of extn. Now I know what extn I got on my phone Lately I have been thinking of flashing ICS rom (Im on overcome 4.1 rightnow) but since I am not sure whether all the apps and games on my phone will work on ICS. Through some light on this. I will be using titanium bakup. Thanks in advance.

Any special procedures?

Okay so my friend has a Samsung captivate. He is on 2.2 and I would really like to help him root and install cwm and a stable cm9 build. I see a lot of one click methods but I'm not particularly sure which one to use... I have an s3 which to me seemed easier to root and install cwm. All this eclair, froyo, and gb things are hurting my head. And just driving me in circles. But if I had some direction it would be appreciated. I just want to know what I need to do to get ,root, cwm, and cm9 thanks ahead of time!

I don't claim to know everything but I do know this. Being that he is on 2.2 you will have to flash to gingerbread first and make sure whatever you flash has bootloaders included otherwise you will have a bricked phone at some point along your way to CM9.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
Go to that link and it will give you several one click options to get you to a variety of stock GB roms. Also for your intitial root there are several one click applications available that will get you fixed up you should just have to google them.
Yeah I'm used to having to flash new firmware, flashing cwm again then new Rom.that was on my old sensation. But thanks I will tell him to update to gingerbread via kies.then I will flash a custom kernel via Odin then just update to cm9
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Stickies also have some good instructions.
Okay so he just upgraded to 2.3.5 so am I going to need to install boot loader as well? or am I just going to use the one click tool
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
If he is on 2.3.5 GB already, root the phone and flash a corn kernel so he will have a working CWM
If he has kk4 gb 2.3.5, then he has the gb bootloaders. So all u need is to flash a kernel with cwm and then the Rom of ur choice copied to ur internal sd and u will be good to go. So see this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19425513&postcount=1

So even though they are gingerbread boot loaders, I can still flash an ics Rom?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
^ Yep... And each Rom should have it's own install instructions and requirements in their OP as well.
(hit thx button by accident, but oh well ... )

Yes GB bootloaders are the requirement and are even backwards compatible. You should be able to install anything from Eclair to Jelly Bean now without problem. But as the previous response states make sure you follow the directions for whatever rom you are using so you are less likely to run into issues.
Yeah I just ran into problem after problem tonight. Finally got cm9 installed and his imei for changed. I am running into every speed bump possible with this phone

[Q] Preventing Encryption Unsuccessful

After reading encryption unsuccessful thread in development section i am downgrade my captivate from slimbean to saurom jvu. Is there any way to prevent this. I am looking to change the default memory from internel to external. Anybody tried it. Can my cappy read the internel memory after changing it.

Sent from my SGH-I897 using Tapatalk 2
I'm not sure the bug can be prevented but it doesn't happen to everyone, I personally never got it.
One thing though, why downgrade? JB is by far better than ICS.

seems to be exclusively ICS problem. have not heard of anyone having the EU bug with any JB rom flashes coming directly from GB.
