Samsung rom's will always stay laggy unless they change the filesystem. Cyanogenmod is by far one of the smoothest rom i've tried on my Sammy (not that i've tried em all).
An other option would be to lagfix your phone, there are numerous threads that explains how to do that (I dont have time to search for it at the moment).

yes, CM7 is hell of a good rom. i rarely see lag on my phone, i mean, i dont see at all,.. the only problem is, when i change the background of SMS/Messaging pin code, sometimes it enlarges the background, and any live wallpaper won't work there, but STILL GREAT. and i occasionally see lag in other Samsung based roms out there, 2.3.4 / 2.3.5

Try flashing a kernel that incorporates lagfix. Semaphore, speedmod or Dark Core work really well and it's dead easy to install them. Then, convert your filesystem to ext4.
After that, try applying these tweaks, they work wonders on our phone's memory management and speed things up quite nicely:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15948434&postcount=1127
You just need busybox 1.18.2 (read the first post in that thread for a link and more instructions)

cm7 my friend , thats all you need , try it and u will not remember the word "lag"

What he^^ said.

Custom roms always have higher quadrant scores but they are always laggy. If you want a smooth experience, just flash one of the final builds of Froyo 2.2.1. ZSJPK was the second latest 2.2.1 build and I find it to be the best. It's virtually lag-free.

Try CM7 really good rom, or MIUI rom good one as well and lag free.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk

cm7 and miui are, like mentioned, lag-free. But they drain battery faster than stock or stock-based ROMs (at least in my experience). It's a trade-off but it could be worth trying them out.
cm7 is basically "The Way Google Envisioned Android" as in, there's no branding or manufacturer's crap on the phone.
MIUI is what I like to call "So You Got An Android But Like iPhone's Looks Better". I tried it and it was too iPhoney to me. But you might like it.

+1 to CyanogenMod 7.1 stable (CM7.1) - google it for their website, you can't really miss it.
No lags at all. And according to my experience, my battery gets drained as fast as with any other rom (i've tried several stock and custom 2.2 and 2.3.x).
I am staying clear of nightlies however. Stable works great for me, no point screwing up with that.

i know CM7 is good rom and lagfree....because the rom size is only 95mb...but i like few things in samsung...like slide right to call and slide left to msg and few little feature.... we are sooo ****ed up with this great hardware but stupid firmware!!!....**** YOU SAMSUNG

If XXJVK had been a flop, it may not have been a big deal to me as I am very much happy with stock JPY. But since XXJVK is nothing less than awesome, great battery life, eye-candy features, etc., yeah it became a very BIIIIG deal for me to have gingerbread to munch everyday.

Yep!!!
2.2.1 -> Gingerbread is like Win xp->Win 7 .
I hope that makes the point clear .
What matters is how well Samsung mess up the original code and make it suitable for SGS. And in the process
If they can fix the battery drain injected in froyo and change the filesystem from RFS to EXT (it is going to be a very big deal for all SGS owners)
It doesn't matter if Sammy removes all Gingerbread goodies (IMO), if all the security features of gingerbread is there in the ROM then GINGERBREAD is really a great deal for me
Gingerbread is not big deal for me but milestone for phone is it important yes all updates are as they depict the future so no more updates no.more phone.

it is..
this ROM is super fast and super smooth.. memory management is better..
battery life is still mystery to me..
if the stock ROM is this good,, imagine what Devs like Darky can do to this ROM..
yes the biggest deal for me cause of battery and speed. with all existing features.
Battery life has gotten so much longer with the Samsung Gingerbread beta. That's essential to me...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
its definetly the best rom and because gingerbread has so many things under the hood it was for me very important, battery life and memory management as the previous poster said are just two of them .
I don't agree with what Darky can do about it , i would say more what hardcore, supercurio,.... so the kernel devs can do about it when the sources are avaible.

No. But anything higher than 2.2 is.
We are still on 2.2 official, and the performance is a disgrace.
Well I used to be perfectly happy with jpy and couldn't care less about gingerbread because I was thinking of getting the sgs2 when it comes out. But after trying out jvk I think I'll hang on to my sgs for a little longer.

If it had Native Sip support, it would be perfect, so far its great.

Plus the try-out showed marginal gains over my current rom .

+1 i must agree, i am eager to try it but im baffled by all the posts, il wait for some more features, like decent stable kernel and a range of themes other than deodexed stock versions.
Im thinking of trying out the Miui ROM its now stable and looks pretty awesome.
But as an answer to the thread... NO gingerbread isnt such a big deal for me. id say there are custom ROMs out there with plenty more features and support. so il wait a little longer before i try it.
It's good to be "up to date", but there in nothing really usefull in this update. Speed is the same (=not so nice w/o lagfix) as in 2.2.1, and so as everything else.

As long as my phone

-Minimal lag.
-Has good internet experience

-Good camera and gallery.
Just so happens that JVK does all that and well for me.
Had running for almost a week now with no black screen or issues whatsoever.

[Q] CM or Not? Which one?

Hello everyone,
I've been a fellow follower of the forum since I got my Galaxy S about 4 months ago. It is an amazing phone.
I've tried CM7 at the beginning, MIUI and several ROMs (currently with Darkys 10.1) and I had always a problem.
With CM7/MIUI the problem is battery life and some incompatibilities like codecs, playing flv files and so on. I am really having problems to know the current state of CM7 cores, mostly about if the battery life is comparable with stock rom.
I really want to try something that is still evolving but stable, that when I want to upgrade I don't have to wipe everything, and that I don't need to spend days to have everything working.
My main concern is battery life when using 3G, now it is simple not enough and the quantity of applications that can be run in background. For GPS I use GPS AIDS and seems to work fine.
So I really want to stick to only one ROM (Darky for me is too slow for updates and I have some issues with it)
EDIT: I am currently testing CM
Thanks!
if you want speed choose MIUI / CM7
If you want battery life Choose something similar to stock
if you want both ............ Tough sh!t lol

I used CM7 once, but what is so special about it? I only saw speed y the selectable themes. Then I had compatibility and codec issues, also needed to find some driver for the pc to use usb tethering.
I installed juwe over JVH with Darkys but I am getting FC with EDT app and reboots in the browser.... any ideas? Something wrong? I installed it via CMW with Wipe Version.
Also for Tethering you need to copy some script from one folder to another... why the Semaphore Kernel doesn't come with that predefined?
I may try SURFACE as for CM I need to mess with Odin.

As I am sure you have realized by now, the reason threads like this very little usefulness is that they almost immediately become Fanboi Fiestas. Each respondent will tell you that their favorite ROM will solve all of your problems and wash your car at the same time.
In the end, the only proper judge of which ROM is best for you will be YOU. You simply need to select a handful of ROMs that seem good to you, and test them out. No advice, no fanboi screed, no feature list can do that job for you.
Reading your posts, I can possibly give you some ideas of what to look for in very broad strokes.
First of all, the battery problem in CM7 is pretty much corrected by recent development. Most users now get about the same battery life as they would on the average Samsung ROM. However, I would NOT suggest you install CM7. If as you say you want to install a single ROM and then be done with it, then CM7 is certainly not for you as updates come every day or two. They don;t NEED to all be installed, but most users do. CM7 is the ROM for those who like to tweak and tune their phones and rewards people who like to experiment and really dig into the nuts and bolts of the OS. Since you say that when you installed CM7 for a little while months ago all you noticed was that it was faster and had lots of pretty themes, and you claim not to have time to even read a thread to learn about a ROM, then CM7 is ABSOLUTELY NOT FOR YOU.
Insanity and MUIU are both ROMs based on CM7 the same way the Samsung ROMs are based on the Samsung android version. Each have their strengths and weaknesses. Insanity is closer to CM7 in look and feel, while MUIU is closed source and by default very much like iOS. Each one has devoted fans, so feel free to try them.
The endless numbers of Samsung ROMs are mainly themed versions of the basic Samsung code, with some kernel tweaks thrown in. You are usually best off choosing the one you like the looks of best, if you choose to go in that direction. Samsung ROM fanbois and devs will usually tell you their ROM is incredibly fast and feature packed, and so much better than anyone else's ROM. Whether that is true or not, take all such claims with a grain of salt.
Go out, download 5 or so roms, read their install instructions carefully, familiarize yourself with ODIN and the three button recovery method...and start exploring.
Good luck.

These kind of threads are pointless, like was mentioned earlier, each to his own ROM, some that work for some may not work for others, it does`nt make a ROM bad/unstable blah blah, only one way to judge a ROM, try it out then decide, no need for all this prick measuring...just my €1:74..
Ok thr best rom for you is jetpack, its pretty stable and has all features you are looking for with excellent battery life its very easy to install as the developer of that rom has made a simple yo use app. That takes care of all of the simple steps like wipe/no wipe, which kernel, which theme (two themes - basic stock theme or blue cm7 theme) and which modem! Jetpack's latest version which is v3.1 has some problems with tw4 so i advice you to not install v3.1 and wait for v3. 2 which will be there in 1-2 days as said by the developer!

What's Your Favorite ROM, and Why?

Just wondering... what's your current favorite ROM for your Nexy, and why?
I used CM7 for most of my time owning my N1. Have it almost 2.5 years now. Very enjoyable experience.
Currently using MIUI GB 2.3.30, with Go Launcher and Neok kernel. I find it very stable and offers everything I need. I also enjoy the smoother experience GB offers for our device over ICS.
I also frequently try BCM ICS CM9, but always find myself reverting to MIUI as I miss working video camera and flash. Although gap is closing fast; flash now working, and video has just arrived.
Keeping a close eye on Sense 4 ROM too
What gets your vote?
PS hats off to all the rom cookers/developers for making the N1 so much fun to own

Which component of ICS that you are holding out for? I have been using ICS on a daily basis.
CM7 patched with PDroid and some solution to place apps in an dedicated partition on the SD card.
I'm currently working with both CyanogenMod7.2.0RC2 and BCMRC3.4Update1 .. I love having ICS working, but to be honest CM7 is better (i.e. more consistent and more stable) if this is your only phone.
I keep on messin' around and just assuming that one day I'll brick the device. That's OK though, a perfect opportunity to ditch AT&T once my GSM device is dead.
Anyway... here is question for you folks going back and forth between GB and ICS roms. Have you found a common internal partition size setup so you can simply nandroid restore back and forth? Or are you using BlackRose to resize each time?
i dont have a favor rom coz every 1 have some thing and not contained with other
now i'm using cm 7.2 its cool and the battery life is good
but the most thing i hate is call program (i dont know the true name) mean when someone call me his pic appear small and all that stile is ugly and cannot sync his facebook account with his name and pic
the sense roms give me a great call program and appear FB account ,....
but drain battery more and i think the camera quality is not good with all sense rom
so
1st - cm7.2
2nd - hyper supernova
ics waiting 4 stable
miui i dont like it
I usually stick with ICS layout when reverting back to CM7 or MIUI.
Now I'm back on BCM ICS

I love all the ics (BCM,Texasice, and Aokp) roms each have their own customization, very fast, and quite stable most of the time. I also like some of the gingerbread roms like cm7 and miui, they are very fast and have amazing battery life. Im not a big sense guy , but with sense 4.0 in dev i will prob give it a go . In the end the rom choice is up to the user.
m so happy
Ok I been using this phone for two years or so
I loved it and had my blue days
I have struggled with a2sd and etc
However I was always unhappy with not having the sense look
And now I am using this hyper sense nova Rom and I am in love with it
I get close to ten hours battery with light to moderate usage
I have a battery caluberation problem but once I solve it ill probably not switch
I am more interested in features than looking so I prefer CM 7.2
I'm running BCM myself (4.0U1 at the moment) but I keep a backup of CM7.2.0 in case anything goes bad.
I'd like to test MIUI someday but AFAIK greek language which I need is not supported, at least for ICS-based roms.

Which rom is fast & has no LAGS!!!

Hi everyone i've just got myself HOX but my girlfrend still has SGS over 3yrs now .My question is which rom has no lags and is good enough for daily use.I flashed for her C-rom and it's laggy as hell.
I tried couple others rom all of them are jelly beans i don't remember names of roms but most of them are laggy i repeat laggy that i can't do basic things.
So maybe jelly bean is to heavy what i mean by that is You know just a single core ,512mb of rams maybe that's not enough ,i don't know i'm not a dev i just wish to have a decent rom without lags.
Could someone suggest which rom has no lags 'cuz i'm a little bit tired of searching for it.
I don't need JB might be ICS but i wish to have a normal working phone without lags .
U hope that someone can point something for me ,anyways thanx in advance and have a good one bye bye.
First of all, I hope you're not comparing performance to your hox...
That said, there will be certain microlags, and opening certain apps might take a second, no matter which rom you choose. CM10 roms are among the most stable jb roms, there's loads of variations and re-themes of it here. No offense to anyone, but a huge amount of jb roms here are re compiled CM10 or Aokp with themes and bloatware. Aokp ics roms are the equivalent regarding ics, in my opinion.
My tip would be first to find out if gb, ics or jb is best for your girlfriend, read up on it. Which features does she need, what ui does she prefer?
Then start fresh, find some of the guides here in xda, flash gb in Odin and repartition and start from there to flash your rom of choice.
Sent from horseback.
I found cm10 to be laggy (fresh install with only nova launcher and a few google apps). CM9 is not laggy at all for me.
I'd suggest sticking to ics if performance is your main concern.

I know this might not the right place to say this, but why is everyone so keen on (unofficial) firmware and then expecting wonders? No one needs Android 4.0.x or 4.1.x on an SGS right now.
If you just want a stable, fast and almost lag-free running SGS then you should install one of the better 2.3.6 StockROMs (JVU or JW4(a little less stable but more memory)), add an optimized kernel like semaphore (stock color, not big mem version) and maybe even change the filesystem to ext4.
At least for now forget the 4.x hype, be a man, have balls and laugh at others thinking you being "uncool".
A SGS configured this way without garbage apps could run precisely like a swiss watch.

Thats what im doing now....jb roms are to laggy.no sounds,no vibration,fc and other things.
Doesn't matter which jb Rom.no one of them is perfect.
Better a good "old" system than a "half".

Hi
i tested gb 2.3.6 jw1 (is the best gb rom), ics cm9 and jb mackay rom. In my opinion jb is the best rom.
In GB all runs slowly, but stabil. It looks lame and old. but some people like it. I hated the performance with wlan and internet. Slower then this isnt possible. Any ICS and JB Rom is faster in this point.
CM9 runs very nice, but some games need hours to start, dont know why. I think some internet validation things needs to long. Ok after some hours my phones needed a restart, but this takes only about 3 min, then you can go on.
Mackay is super smooth, some games work even better then with cm9. Only Wlan is in this weak. But the rest is awesome. So i prefer to JB!
On all roms i had about 200 apps installed mostly games and used link2sd with a partition on my external sd. So it was always slower then a pure rom.

That's exactly the difference. I also have about 150 apps installed - but almost _no_ games, furthermore nothing moved to SD! And with XXJVU - IMHO the most stable so far - I was not counting in hours but had no restart / FC in 2-3 months.
Everybody has to make his/her own decision - my SGS is no gameboy for me, I use it for daily life and it has to run smoothly and without problems. If your phone hangs unnoticed and you couldn't get an important call then it's a lame excuse that the phone could have been rebootet within a minute when in fact it's dead until noticed by pure luck.
I'm therefore even tempted to move from actual SauROM JW8 back to JW4 or my beloved JVU ... but of course stability is not only a matter of the OS but - as Android unfortunately isn't able to catch all faults / errors - of app updates as well.
Yeah You right about GB , i remember like maybe year or two ago when "darkyrom" crue uploaded their gb roms every single day and SGS was so fast.
Now all JB roms are lagy for me and i'm going to flash old good Ginger Bread and i want to see a difference.
If there is any difference.
Anyway thanx a lot for answers i've learned something and good night every1.
I'm running cm9 with devil kernal. Its awesome.
The only reason why I don't use gb now is because and this is lame but with cm9 I can video record with my front camera....which my daughter loves....well we both do lol.

While CM9 with devil kernal is friggen awesome...I have no problems running and recommending gingerbread. But people will always get caught in the hype.

I give vote for GB too. I tried lots of ICS and JB roms, and all happen to have some bugs, not very important bugs, but some that annoys me. I always used them for few days at most then got back on GB.
At the moment I am on JW4 GB, with Semaphore 2.7.4, and all seems to work nice, Well of course there is lag here and there, but i am on smartass gouverner and i didnt overclock CPU, its on stock 1GHz. So maybe with performance gouverner and overclocked CPU, it wouldnt have lags at all.
Also I really love GB because of stock camera app, stock music player, and sliding thing for calling and messaging. If you need some more information, be free to ask
It will still lag if you OC and choose any other governer....even with lagfix (ext4) conversion.
Not that bad tho.
I just flashed back to gb jw4 with semaphore 2.7.4.....to play with it again.
Anyone know if you can use the filesystem of cm9 on gb? May be a stupid question but its just a thought.

Last 8 months of my i9000;
First 3 months was a slim ics fan
Then fourth and fifth,Elite's ics roms...
6th and 7th months,JB user(cm10/slim bean/elite's gnexus)
Now (since like 1,5 months ) I'm completely GB fan...
Even i can't believe this but ... Yes GB looks better in my opinion...
You know some people ask which is the best rom in Q section and everyone's answer is the same,"it depends how you're using)
GB is my style from now on...
In ics/JB there is something is missing that i really dont know what"s that....
Note:I'm on XXJVT with no root access (stock kernel) for about a month... And i'm veeeery happy with it ..
GT-I9000 cihazımdan Tapatalk 2 ile gönderildi
just install SLIMBEAN from XDA its awesome... I'm using this from last 2 months and really no problem at all.. its smooth fast and stable..
and once you get use to it you will never go back to any other rom even your stock..because apps open very quickly and its to compact also only 70 mb... and one more thing battery life is almost same..as stock ROM
I am on the latest CM10 nightly with the JB semaphore kernel, no overclock, bigmem enabled, and I have honestly found it to be the best most responsive ROM I have used on the phone to date.
Previous to that I was using the stable release of CM9 with semaphore, and while it wasn't perfect in terms of lag, it was rock solid stable and reliable. I would use this for your girlfriend if I was you (as I am assuming she isn't as tech savvy as yourself, so best to stay away from nightlies). I'm sure she won't even notice a little bit of lag. And the usability of ICS compared to GB is, in my opinion, dramatically better. Just uninstall all the development apps before giving it to her.
All roms can be a second slower than some, that's just expected. I recommend just getting her something up to date and clock it up to 1104 Mega Hurts if the screen doesn't freeze on it if you do.

Using X-Bean 3.0 + Semaphore 2.5.0s on a daily base. Running smooth & stable here. LiveOc 120, big mem 404mb, ondemand ui, rasd 1024, sio/noop. Not had a single reboot, lag etc whatsoever

Is it possible to Root and Install Cyanogen MOD for the GTi8190L S3 mini?

I bought a S3 mini recently however the samsung UI is horrible its so sluggish and laggy you won't believe it you can't even open a web browser properly without some kind of lag.
My friend then told me you cannot install any custom roms like cyanogen MOD for my S3 mini because there is a L word at the end of it.
L meaning latin America.
Man I didn't know they had different versions of this thing all the S3 mini looks the same. And I got a good deal on it so I went ahead and bought it.
Its true its a little small at 4 inches but after a while I got used to it. I like it a lot and the shape and heavy feel of it is quite nice.
But wish I could get rid of this bloatware and samsung rom and put in a light and fast custom ROM.
NOT TRUE!
You can flash TWRP or CWM Recovery in Odin and then flash CM, PAC or AOKP even in i8190L.
Those rom's doesn't change your baseband, and as long you're using a i8190L baseband you'll be fine
(You posted in wrong section. It should have been Q&A)

WOW so you are saying I am not screwed? the L don't mean anything and I can actually use all these S3 Mini Roms on my L version? WTF
I taught you needed some sort of Ported ROM for the L version?
Not only CyanogenMod, but also PAC ROM, Ilussion ROM, AOKP ROM.
The ones that didn't work form me were Paranoid Android by Oliver, PAC MAN ROM and CM10.1 by Oliver.
Download the best roms from maclaw's webpage.

Install this S3 Mini Toolkit and install the recoverys and root and everything you need, after, download any rom that you desire, and just flash it through the recovery.

WOW thanks a lot man
One thing the thread said you need a specific model number for the roms meaning cyanogem mod designed for L versions else it will brick
Its best I do like everyone else and leave the stock rom and don't interfere with this phone. Cause if something happens I will be wishing I didn't interfere with it.
Doubt any rom can solve android lag anyways. Thats just how android is, only windows phone and ios are lag free.

Bahahahaha that's the stupidest thing I ever heard man.
Just flash AOKP from maclaw.pl and get it over with.
ok I did it
I installed this ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2400402
was this a good fast rom?
anything else faster?
I noticed its really fast. And the uploader says it works on L version
I can't believe the massive difference it has had. so glad I am rid of this nasty slow ass samsung original rom
I'm using AOKP from maclaw.pl, it's faster and more customizable.
I'm using cyanogenmod 10.1 from maclaw.pl. Its a very great rom without bugs.

WOW thanks a log holy crap this is even faster than the other one
So happy about this website and this new rom
I was gonna sell my S3 mini because I was disgusted with performance you had to wait 2 and a half seconds to return to home screen when you press the home button figured its cause of the garbage Nova Thor CPU in these phones
Then I installed these roms and wow it flies like blazing fast hooooly moly
I still miss my i9100 S2 though. Cause this Mini is much slower in 3D games than the S2. But say what. Main thing is this rom has solved most of my problems.
I kinda miss the shortcut for the brightness adjustment slider in the drop down from samsung rom.
I was afraid of flashing at first but you guys has held my hand every baby step of the way.
I believe this is all I need now, no need for me to put anything else. Vanilla android is pretty much what I wanted.
So happy that nasty 3 second lag delay in the samsung rom is gone like everything you did took an additional 1 to 3 seconds to respond

Glad to hear that
Just so you know, the delay when you press the home button is caused by S voice, you can disable it and its faster
theres also can option in aokp that you can slide across the status bar to set the brightness
