So noone using SGS+ can tell me that their phone's GPS is working properly? On any ROM (including the stock ROMs, even the branded ones)? And that apps like FasterFix do not help?
i have used FasterFix to change NTP server to europe.pool and then used GPSAids with "Other" selection in Setup, then downloaded GPS aiding data.... TRY
...for me this helps a lot.i get fix to 1 minute, and that is very good with samsung
I'm using i9001XXKP4 and the GPS takes a long time to get a fix. I was walking to work today and after about 8 minutes trying to get a fix it didn't.
When i first upgraded to i9001XXKP4 (the phone came with some 2.3.3 version i cant rememer not, bought in the UK) I noticed that the compass wasnt working and the GPS coudln't get a fix but after a reboot (i didn't reboot since installing the new version) the compass started working and the GPS got a fix while outdoors holding skill in about 2 minutes.
still compared to my previous budget ZTE blade, which got a lock in seconds, this galaxy is waaaay slow.
i've used the instructions found on the web to enable something called GPS Plus.
aparently it was a feature of the i9000 but can also be found on the i9001.
(remember, i'm on i9001XXKP4)
basically:
dial:
*#*#3214789650#*#*
this will open an activity called AngryGPS
Go to Settings> General Settings and set:
Operation Mode: MSBASED
Start mode: Hotstart
GPS Plus: ON
Accuracy: 50
then to go back to
Settings > SUPL Settings
and set:
Servert FQDN type to: Auto.
Just in you need the original settings, here they are
Server
supl.google.com
7276
UMTS SLP
OFF
SUPL
VerSign
but the software saves the original settings and changes back to the google server if you choose custom again.
Reboot the phone and that it.
It got a lock in about 20 seconds with me walking with the device in hand and eventually locked on 10 sattellites. half of them were high quality signal.
worked inside the car in my hand no problem but the signal is a little stronger if i put it below the windshield.
anyway... hope it helps.

I tried this and all GPS and compass issues are now fixed. GPS locks on accurately in just a few seconds.
***This fix may not work if you live outside of USA.***
##You can play with the settings if you want to. If you FUBAR your GPS a simple factory reset will return your setting to default. You can do this without going into recovery buy going to Settings / Privacy / Factory data reset.##
Edit:
***************************************************************
Tested Procedure:
1 - Disable "Use Wireless Networks" - Settings / Location & Security
2 - Dial *#*#1472365#*#*
3 - Under "Application settings" Change "Operation Mode" to MS Based
4 - Under "SUPL/CP Settings" Change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7276 [ Do not use www. in front of supl]
5 - REBOOT
6 - Turn back on the "User Wireless Networks"
********************************************************************
Original settings:
Operation Mode: Standalone
Server: www.spirent-lcs.com
Port: 7275
*****************************
Optional New Fix:
1 - Dial *#*#1472365#*#*
2 - Go outside to get an unimpeded GPS fix.
3 - Choose Delete GPS Data button.
4 - Choose Get Position Test button. Let it run for 3 min or until you have 10 to 12 Sat locks and back out.
Thanks goes to Onlyloki for this method.
You may want to do this in conjunction with the first procedure and then do the optional if the first procedure did not work for you. I did both and my GPS is locking even faster. Let me know what you think...
Just some more info I dug up:
Quote from http://www.vzwdevelopers.com/aims/public/menu/lbs/LBSFAQ.jsp
"In MS-Based mode, the network provides the satellite information to the device, based on a rough estimate of where the device is located, and the device acquires the GPS signals from the satellites and calculates its location. After the initial fix, the device operates like an autonomous GPS receiver, until the satellite information must be refreshed, at which time the device goes back to the network to update the satellite information. MS-Based mode is appropriate for applications that require the device location to be updated rapidly, such as a navigation application. Can the GPS work in autonomous mode? No, the GPS receiver requires the assistance of the network elements to acquire its initial location fix."
With the rapid updating we could see an increased drain on the battery. I have not confirmed that yet. If anyone can let us know.
Edit #2:
I was informed by a sales rep at T-Mobile that Samsung is aware of the issue and is going to fix the GPS and the compass issue in their first update.

What are your settings set to?
Also check out a compass app and skymap are they throwing you all over?
I'm curious.
This is a shining example of what makes it great to be an Android phone owner, the outstanding community support that XDA has is second to none in my opinion, even to carrier/vendor support. My Vibrant should be arriving Tuesday or Wednesday (can't wait). I used to have Sapphire, then switched to the HD2 because I'm bound to T-Mobile and Windows Mobile was more horrible than I could have imagined. I can't wait to see CM6 with Froyo on the Vibrant...makes my mouth water thinking about it. Thanks again for the great work.

compass and skymap ARE acting strange... guess the nav was working because i happened to get a quick gps fix? i'll choose to believe that over the possibility i could have jinxed myself by saying i had no problems...
i have noticed that the battery drain is much higher (like abnormaly so) if you have the gps toggled on through tw and have something like beautiful widgets on...
would something like the QuickGPS app on HD2 solve some of these problems? anyone familiar with that app and what it does?
I did this *fix* and it killed my GPS.
so, I have reverted back to normal.
I noticed I'm getting a much better GPS lock in maps. The problem with skymap appears to be unrelated to GPS and appears to be something with the compass. On my G1, it tracked as I turned it with fairly precise accuracy. With the vibrant, it has a 5-6 second delay on tracking movement on the horizontal (up and down tracking in near perfect). However, the compass app seems to function just fine in that regard, oddly enough.

Same here. The compass was not affected by this fix, it is still acting like garbage.
The GPS does lock faster now, but before this it was working reasonably.

I will remove compass fix from my title. I saw an improvement but can not prove this fix will correct the compass issue.
Thought I'd chime in here.
With the default settings my GPS and compass seemed to be working fine, but I thought I'd check these new settings out. I have since reverted back to the original settings b/c the change actually made my GPS less accurate and my compass seemed to get a little funky.
GPS: Original settings is showing my exact location; down to the actual room in the house. New settings I wasn't even on the correct street!
Compass: Original settings in Skymap the compass is steady. Once it finds it self it sits there. New settings the map was rotating without me moving.
Figured this would be helpful to those out there who's GPS/compass seems to be working fine with the stock settings!

Just out of curiosity what are your original settings set to?
The same listed by the OP. I checked them before I made any changes.
Operation Mode: Standalone
Server: www.spirent-lcs.com
Port: 7275
Disable (and do not enable even after we're done here) Use Wireless Networks under Settings ---> Location and Security.
Go into LbsTestMode (*#*#1472365#*#*)
Go to Application Settings
Enable MS-Based Mode
Increase Accuracy to 100
Leave the rest stock
Return to the main LbsTestMode menu
Go to SUPL/CP Settings
Select the Serve FQDN Type drop down menu
Hit AUTO Config
Exit to the dialer and reboot your Vibrant twice for good measure.
If the accuracy of your location degrades try using the stock www.spirent-lcs.com settings again.
Now from what I can tell, Google Maps works much better with these settings. The first lock takes 15-40 seconds depending on your view of the sky(indoors/out). You may get a "Location Unavailable" message from the first hit of My Location but it should come around shortly after.
The accuracy is good enough for in-car tracking. Haven't testing walking yet
I'll report back if I find that the GPS eventually ****s the bed and takes much longer for the subsequent fresh fixes.. which seems to be the trend for a new Vibrant. Also, moving your hand away from the GPS antenna will make things quicker. It's to the far right of the camera.

I must've deleted which MS - Mode but make sure it's MS-Based and not Assisted. Make sure you leave Wireless Networks off completely as well because this will prevent a GPS fix in GMaps for some reason.
Let me know if it works any better!
I gotta say so far this is the best fix yet I did everything but had to reboot a third time cause for some reason I wasn't connecting to data, but after that it was golden I did the satellite test and it got 14 satellites in about 5 seconds so it seems to me that this works the best. Thanks for the find, but what does skyhook do you have the option to turn it on or off what's the difference?
Thanks

I can't say for sure since I've never had this problem. Maybe someone else has and will try this otherwise, the only way for you to know would be to try it out. If AUTO-Config gives you these problems move back to spirent-lcs

I live in Houston, and I get that randomly when I'm at work. I have that problem with the old and new Vibrant. The new Vibrant, locks on my location when I step outdoors though with no problem at all. I'm just testing this FIX to see will it fix the indoor problem, but so far, it just showing me I cant find a location.
Edit: After 5min it found my location... Running the GPS Test and it actually locks on and off 1 Satellite..

What is it with people in Houston all having this problem. I wonder if it is just the area we are all in (I work near the Medical Center.) I want to trade my phone in for a new one but if its going to have the same problem I am not sure it would be worth it. Are you having the problem still after you switched yours out? Is anyone else getting the error of "Not enough space in music database" when trying to listen to music and selecting the "Artist" category?
I'm in Houston and its always saying I'm in Houston and I tested the gps while in my truck and its great but indoors its not that great... but is need it more in my truck anyway so who cares lol
Anyone else having issues with the settings in the LbsTestMode menu not sticking? I was able to implement one of the posted fixes here before, but not this one as the settings will not stay. They change successfully on each screen, but as soon as I go back and then return to the screen, they are back to where they started. I can even confirm the settings did not change at the bottom of the main LbsTestMode menu with the status display. I've turned off the Wireless Networks setting under location before trying this many different times, reboots out the wazoo and at different stages(tried changing the setting, rebooting immediately without checking it again and no go). Also did a 'Delete GPS Data' with no help.
*edit* It appears I can change the SUPL server address and port just fine, but the operation mode change from MS Based to Standalone does not stay.
Hi,
I got a Samsung Galaxy S here in Australia, rooted it and upgraded from 2.1 to 2.2 I know that GPS worked just fine with 2.1, I was able to walk home and see my position updating very nicely on Google maps
Since updating to 2.2, GPS hasn't worked at all. When I turn it on, and start an application that uses GPS (Navigation, Maps, etc), the GPS icon sits there and flashes back and forth between those two types of icons and I don't get anything on the maps which shows me where I am. I haven't chased this up since upgrading, but it's starting to bug me now
After searching these forums for 'gps not working', I've pulled down the 'GPS test' application and I don't know for sure, but it appears to find one satellite:
PRN SNR Elev Azim Flags
2 11.0 74.0 150.0
But the GPS icon just sits there flashing back and forth.
I may have missed something since upgrading, do I need to do something to the phone to get my GPS working again?
Thanks!
OK, I seem to have fixed the problem I turned on "Use wireless networks" and voila! I now have successful GPS lock and position in my maps
I would have thought that you could use GPS without having "Use wireless networks" turned on!?

Wouldn't call it a successful GPS lock. Since you got it with the mobile networks. (in my case when I use it . the accuracy in my village is about 1000-1500m since the BTS is that much far from me )
So if you get into an area with weak mobile networks, wont help you much .
Wouldnt call this as resolved with "BAD GPS" cuz your GPS still sucks as before (and doesnt work , you just found a workaround that was there also before , 2.2.1 has even some other function for GPS that tries to fix it (or help?) )
But since you can use it now, its ok I guess . OH and there are kinda almost no real fixes for this. Most of SGS GPS suck . There is GPS aids, shutting down wifi, GPS status app, changing the something according to your country.
Ok!
I got the same problem as the user from the post.
GPS worked like a charm on my Galaxy S (NDrive or Google) running 2.1.
I updated it to Froyo 2.2.1 JS7 and since then it doesn`t work anymore.
I can't get a fix.
I did the GPS position test and It locks on 8 satelites. Why the F%CK it doesn`t work anymore?
I am almost going back to Eclair.
Any sugestions?
TY!
So you get a lock when doing the GPS test, but no luck in any other applications? I couldn't get a lock at all until I turned on my wireless as well as the GPS, then it worked for GPS test as well as applications...
I get a lock on 8 satelites on the Location Test with and without "Use Wireless connections".
BUT
I can't get a lock when I am using Google maps, with or without "Use Wireless connections".
I bought the AIDS GPS app on Market, but it did't work neither.

Hi,
I'm using Sygic Mobile Maps 10 8.2 and Google Maps (unlocked with navigation). Both work fine with GPS and fix is within 5 sec.
Yet to try my stereo Bluetooth headset, will try in a sec ...
Edit: Headset at work, will try tomorrow...
This phone is very good for gps navigation.
Google Maps Navigation, Sygic Mobile Maps 10, Copilot Live, Navigon and Igomyway are working fine. They give me a lock within a few seconds.
A few tips:
Under Settings - Location and Security:
- enable using wireless networks
- enable GPS-satellites
If you're using WiFi the fix will be faster then without.
Oh yes, and one more thing: don't forget to insert your SIM-card.

I called LG, and got the recipe for fixing the gps.
Do a "hard factory reset"
Turn off phone
hold HOME and VOLUME DOWN and POWER until you see the android. Then wait.
Done. It now sees 10 satelittes indoors, and uses them all, as opposed to maybe seeing one, and never using any.

Thanks I'll give them a try.
I've now also tried to pair this phone with my holux m 1000 (bluetooth), but can't even get that to work. I managed to pair them, but it won't connect to the phone.
Is it just mine or is this phone so useless?

I called LG, and got the recipe for fixing the gps.
Do a "hard factory reset"
Turn off phone
hold HOME and VOLUME DOWN and POWER until you see the android. Then wait.
Done. It now sees 10 satelittes indoors, and uses them all, as opposed to maybe seeing one, and never using any.

i tried this... but.. nothing happened... why? ... btw i'm using a LG o2x which comes with vodafone software-branding... would that matter in this case?
thx for helping
LG made a booboo.
There is no gps.conf in /system/etc, so there is no assistance. I pushed the file from a Nexus One (attached) into place and that sorts it.

Oh yes, and one more thing: don't forget to insert your SIM-card.

erm.. sorry... a newbie here... what do u precisely do with this file?
thx
I tried to use gps.conf and supl method but no luck, the issue weren't there. My gps was a jerk, last week i spent 30minutes to fix the satellite while driving in town. Even standing under the sky, the fastest I am able to fix is 200seconds, not to mention there are many times they wont even fix.
But my problem was stopped once i changed from stock to other rom. so I guess there is something else wrong in the stock rom, as the other roms are able to perform well even without gps.conf. (around 20-30 sec fix time).
So I guess only when your gps is able to lock satellite, gps.conf will help to speed it up. At least that's what happen to me
Hi guys,
ok, my GPS has not worked on my Galaxy S for a long time now. I am always flashing new roms, kernals and it may be something to do with that.
Currently I am running the MUIU Beta rom, but it hasnt worked on previous roms like Darkys.
I decided to download GPS aids from the market ro run some tests.
It downloads the LTO test file, but is unable to copy it.
It says "The application cannot copy files from SDcard to a SYSTEM folder. Maybe it is a busybox problem"
Busybox 1.18.4 is installed to /sbin/
GPS aids has superuser permissions
Google maps hasnt been able to get a fix for a long time. GPS Test cannot find any satelites.
Not sure what I did to cause this problem, but can it be fixed?
Is this a hardware issue?
I know it sounds silly, but do you have your wireless turned on when you are trying to use your GPS? After flashing to 2.2 on my Galaxy S, I found that I couldn't get a GPS lock without having my wireless turned on!
Edit: My original thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=986151
Thanks for the quick answer.
Yes the Wifi is switched on, but nothing. Not even one satelite.
The funny thing is that the GPS used to work great. A lot of people werent happy with it but I had no problems.
I got a lock within 10 seconds. I just dont know what I have done to stop it working! lol
Flashing roms you may now have a bad modem or wrong set up especially as you have a beta rom and darky rom .
I would flash stock with pit 512 and reparation checked in other words build a clean phone .

Have you tried the gps test app to see if it is at least seeing the gps satellites or possibly getting a lock?

Hi, yes Ive tried that app. It doesnt find any satelites at all. Nothing!
Unfortunately, I really can't think of anything else. Sadly I believe JJEgan's advice above maybe the only other option
This thread has another possible option http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=974702
You may also want to check out the GPS settings on the phone. I'd have to search the forums for the code that gives you access to them.
*#*#1472365#*#* for 2.1 Eclair.
*#*#3214789650#*#* for 2.2 Froyo.
Not sure, but give this a try... my i9000 can get a gps lock in about 5 seconds with no wifi.
Download Fasterfix from the marketplace.
Run it and choose the region that you are in.
In the Location settings, turn off "Use wireless networks" and turn on "Use GPS Satellites"
Go into the LbsTestMode
*#*#1472365#*#* for 2.1 Eclair.
*#*#3214789650#*#* for 2.2 Froyo.
Application settings - Operation mode - Standalone
Application settings - Accuracy - 100
SUPL/CP Settings - Auto Config
Re-boot your phone
Go back into the LbsTestMode
Get Position Test - Let it run for at least 3 minutes while your phone is outside (clear sky view).
Delete GPS Data.
Hopefully that will work for you as well. I was unable to get a GPS lock without wifi prior to this, and now my GPS locks perfectly on its own.
