Is there in existence, an iPhone forum with as much tech knowledge as this forum?
I got a couple of iPhones to play with, a good one and a fixer-upper.
Whenever I have technical questions about the iPhone and search Google for answers, I keep coming upon forums full of questions (the same ones I would have asked) but no answers. Another problem is most forums are Mac-oriented and I only have PCs.
Lol, too many avg. joe's and computer illiterate people use the iphone, hence the forum's full of questions. As an example, one iphone user i know was super excited and happy that his iphone used web apps and described them as the way of the future, I have no idea how they are advantageous esp when many require an active internet connection and when I mentioned the inability to use our field, healthcare's, current WinMo work/productivity apps, he replied "yea, apple needs to fix that!"...lol, they are so cluseless.
Maybe you could try your luck at searching for a developer forum...well a hacker's/unlocking forum?
I haven't found any good technical forums yet, but so far I would have to say the iPhone isn't that much fun.
Lots of eye candy, animations are super smooth, and the browser is first rate, but there's not a whole lot to do on it. Even the programs available via Installer.app are pretty lame. Can't access the filesystem, everything must be copied via iTunes. You can install OpenSSH and get to the file system that way, but you can't directly copy media to it. It all has to go through iTunes.
The whole time I was thinking... 8GB, 480x320 LCD, 620MHz Samsung ARM processor. Damn I wish this thing could run WM6!
Plus, Bubble Breaker is a helluva lot better than any of the lame games I was able to find for it.
I'll give it a few more days, but I think Windows phones are more my thing.
I've come to the same conclusion!

I've not got an iPhone but like GnatGoSplat, I'd love to have the 'power' and screen size - other stuff like automatic screen rotation and multi-touch would be good as well! I have come to the conclusion that although Apple have done a great job in fueling the revolution in phone UI and function, it's aimed at the non-technical masses or neither have the wit or foresight to realize what could be done if only Apple would let them do it!
I have strayed a little from the point that I originally wanted to make though - 8GB, 480x320 LCD, 620MHz Samsung ARM processor - check the specs for the Meizu M8 Minione and Samsung i900 that are due to be released later this year? Due to similarities to the iPhone, i doubt the M8 will be available in Europe and North America because of copyright infringement, however the i900; well that looks like a whole load of fun that many of us are looking for!

I've known about the M8 for over a year, but it seems like it's vaporware and never coming out. The Samsung i900 looks nice, but screen is lower res. Not sure on the CPU specs, but I'm guessing it will be slower. I love that it has GPS and FM radio though.
Ideally, I would still like to see a Windows Mobile emulator because I'd still want to be able to use the iPhone's apps, many of which are far superior to their WinMo equivalents (Safari for one). Surely I'm not the only one who wants to run WM6 on a HVGA, 11.6mm, 620MHz device! I would be the best of both worlds. Surely I can't be the only one who wants this?
-Edit: Sorry just realized I posted this to Captivate forums and not WP7 question forums-
Hello, I am currently a Samsung Captivate user (which would suck without the developers here on XDA and the current ROM's), and I am looking to get a WP7 for my wife. I am very familiar with the OS and the SDK, but know nothing of the newer hardware available.
I was wondering what the general consensus was of the best available AT&T WP7 and if there would be any new phones in the next month or 2 expected so we should wait on getting this.
I think you should post this in wp7 section of xda. Also you can always google it. That would probably be the best option since you can find spec sheets. But I personally would wait for the motorola atrix 4g for att that is releasing in March. dual core tegra processer + 1gb ram + supposed 1930 mah battery + qhd display (960 x 420 or somthing) = win

Samsung Focus is the BEST phone as of now running WP7. If you want me to go more into detail I can post back... Just trust me and do some youtube/google research.
I am wondering if i should get rid of my HTC HD7. I see the new HTC Sensation and everything looks far superior. Just want a word from you guys before i make the move. Any ETA to when T-Mobile will have them in stock? Also i saw some guy on kijiji selling a HD7 with Android 2.2 on it. I prefer Android over WP7.
Like come on m$ didnt even make a MSN Messenger yet.
And check out the Music player... how ridiculous they don't have a feature to make playlists and why cant videos play in background? why do they just stop when u exit? Sure if a call is coming it can stop... but other than that...
And it had no copy/paste... even though they released copy/paste there is no cut and paste... And they tell us if we jailbreak the phones we wont get the copy/paste feature... like come on that is so bs cause iphone and android phones come with copy/cut/paste.
And importing/exporting the contacts is so f***ed... skydrive and live profile are only way...
And no microSD expansion slot.. just one damn internal slot and if that doesnt work you are left with 15MB of storage.. great.
No proper GPS Navigation other than what we have done so far.. Navigon modded.
I have my HD7 upgraded to 32gb and it has the mugen battery. Any ideas on how much i should sell it for.. it has all the xbox live games and most of the apps.
MSN Messenger is available in the Marketplace, this is an MS approved messenger client so don't expect MS to make another one.
Of course you can make a playlist, just longpress any song you want to add to your current "Now Playing" list and select "Add to Now Playing". It won't appear under the "Playlists" section as this requires Zune but no big deal, at least you've got a list of songs playing you want to play.
Copy/Paste has arrived (although i don't use it). If you think Jailbreaking any device will give you automatic updates without consequences you're mistaken.
Contacts backup are one of the greatest features imo. I've got every single contact linked to my Gmail account so if i ever hard reset all i have to do is link my Gmail account to my phone. Easiest way i've ever known on any device.
I think you should probably put a selling price of £500 and hope that the next person knows absolutely nothing about the device before buying it too. Take your games/apps for example. You obviously have no idea of how these work. So i'll help you out, the next person to buy the phone won't be able to use them (unless they use YOUR email address to set up the phone).
Yeah ! I am inclined towards the HTC Sensation as well now..
Have to make up my mind between Samsung Galaxy S2 and the HTC Sensation..
But I haven't been disappointed with WP7 at all
1. Messenger by Miyowa is the Official MSN messenger ( I dont use it anyway)
I guess it is really down to personal choice.
I have an Htc Hero and Boy I flashed so may Roms on it and now I am nearly sick of flashing All the Lovely Roms on it
WP7 bought something Fresh and New and it serves my daily purpose, the only truely bit that I miss is the navigation, but I guess it will come in the Mango update.
I might sell my HD7 later on , but I doubt anyone will give more than £300 for it if I am lucky, with the new HTC HD7 S being out as well.. or might just keep it
I seriously want to get a NOKIA WP7 when they release theirs next Year cause I am sure the will rock like hell.
As far as I know If Apple doesn't come with something New or different... Android and WP7 will blow them out of competiton

I got my HD7 for only 1 reason, to have WP7. i knew hardware is the same as HD2, but hey, i couldnt wait for a working port of the OS to HD2. Android was just getting boring as well...
Do i still like my HD7 - yes,
Would i want Sensation instead -yes, definitely, if it came with WP7, but it doesn't, so what's the point. Just calm down and wait for chassis 2 of WP7 devices.
Unless you really don't care about what OS you are using, just switch and move on, hardware wise its definitely the way to go....
Thank you all for your valuable replies. I agree wp7 can be better in the future but hardware wise HTC sensation is the way to go. Alright I will be putting my hd7 up for sale.

Do i love my HD7? The answer is YES, OF COURSE...
I owned an HD2 before i bought HD7. HD2 is an amazing phone, and HD7 is the same since they have almost the same hardware (even same errors...). I knew that they had already hacked successfully WP7 on HD2, but i just couldn't wait. I sold my HD2 and then bought the HD7. I totally love it.
HTC sensation has a really good hardware (at least it has the dual-core CPU), and Android is not bad. I just get used to the WP7. I don't think i will change the phone for at least 1 year, until HTC pull out something running WP7, i will consider about it.

I agree with everything you said there.. I owned a HD2, which i thought was fantastic.. I'm just an MS fanboy and have to have the latest and greatest they do.. So as of now i have a HD7 and love it.
I hear what you are saying about the Sensation, but that is still not released. If you take a look at what is going on at MIX11 you will see that the new specs for chassis 1 it specifies Qualcom MSM8x55 chipsets which are a generation ahead of what's in the HD7 now, so quicker OS and GFX (even quicker than it is now!!!). It'll outperform the Sensation even with a older chipset
Hopefully looking forward we'll see an adoption of the QSD8x72, putting WP7 shoulder to shoulder with its Android bretheren in hardware.. We all know that speed wise WP7 is killer!

edit:
Take a look here:
http://www.qualcomm.co.uk/products/snapdragon
It shows that the MSM8x60 chipset is indeed going to be used for WP7 handsets..
I'd keep using the HD7 and take advantage of all the wonderfulness that it exudes and wait for the SUPER hand sets coming in the future.

The HTC sensation is a great looking phone but it runs Android and as much as I love Android, it doesn't have the fluidity of WP7 and I love the fact that the OS and UI works perfectly well with the hardware for the most part.
As much as I love Android, there is generally no balance....The software never fully balances with the hardware...leaving a half-done and disappointing experience.
That being said, I am contemplating a switch BACK to android for the xperia play.
I say wait for WP7 to get the 2.5 GHz Quad Cores when ever they come out.

The beauty of WP7 is that it is perfect on single core processors. Dual-core and quad-core processors will drain the battery faster but as WP7 is already super-fast, they won't add anything to the user experience, thus rendering them a bit pointless TBH.
I would much rather just see the 1GHz processor-based phones drop in price and maybe get more efficient batteries, as battery power is the biggest issue facing WP7 phones, not processor speed.

The Quad is supposed to get better battery life than the HD7's single core. According to the press release, 75% less battery draw,
To meet this challenge, Qualcomm created its next generation architecture and integrated four new, low-power CPU cores and its advanced Adreno® graphics into the APQ8064, enabling it to offer twelve times the available performance as well as 75 percent lower power than the first generation of Snapdragon processors.

hey!
I'm considering getting a Galaxy S I9000 device, although I have a couple of concerns and I was hoping you guys might help me figure them out.
the thing I'm worried about the most is how will the galaxy S be in 1 or 2 years.
I'm talking mostly app wise, because from what I've read, the new high end mobiles will use dual core processors, which means special apps that run only on them, thus the galaxy won't be able to run.
I'm also worried about the support from samsung and google - is it possible that they will state they aren't supporting the galaxy anymore? samsung will say they won't upgrade the touchwiz like HTC said about the HTC Sense, and google will say the new android versions can't be installed on the galaxy s? (sorry if this is a dumb and silly question, but I really don't know what's gonna happen )
now I know there is no guarantee in this things, but I want to 'minimize the damage'....
my main dilemma is whether I should buy the galaxy now, or wait a couple of months for the S2/Atrix/Sensation devices to become cheaper (they cost too much for me...), and then have a mobile with a dual core processor which will probably serve me longer than the Galaxy S will?
thing is, if I'll wait for the mobiles mentioned above to become cheaper I might get caught in an infinite loop, because in one year from now I might be saying the same thing about those devices......
what do you guys think? am I being brainwashed by all these commercials about the dual core processors and there's nothing to worry about, or is it really that much of a deal and I should wait a while for the prices to go down, and dual core processors is really a must in modern smartphones?
thanks!
You can keep telling yourself "should I wait to get something better" for an enternity, there will always be something better coming out.
Most things anyone normal will use their phone for does not need dual core, atm for the common user its only for a little smoother websurfing. The power of new mobiles wount be utalized to its fullest. Mostly in games but who buys a phone to mainly play games on?
If you dont need a phone now then sure wait, but if you are itching to get something new I would have bought it now. The months spent waiting wount be worth it compared to the months you could have fun with this awsom phone
Like above.
If you're waiting because the newer ones are too expensive: get the SGS. If money is not an issue i would say wait for the SGS2 otherwise you'll really get into a loop.
The SGS has great memory (512mb), speedy processor (1GHz) with great 3D capabilities and lots of storage built in for apps which will serve you well for the next couple of years. It is still a top of the line device after one year.
Also has to be said: LIKELY the gingerbread will be the last official android release and no more support. But given the huge fan crowd, there will always be workaround for newer versions, thanks to many developers who are reading and actively contributing to this forum
hey
thanks for the replies.
like you guys said, if I'll wait now I might find myself in the same dilemma regarding other devices.
however, there's one main difference - it's a question of whether the dual core processors are worth waiting for or not... I assume that in one year from now all new device will be released with those processors , so the 'gap' between what I will want by then (SG2 for instance) and whats about to come out a year from now won't be that big like now between the galaxy s and the s 2.
I'll cut it down to a very simple question -
2 years from now, will we still see new apps coming out for the galaxy S device?
In two years time there will be another big processor development i.e. the difference between single and dual core wont be the determining factor of whether your phone can or cant use new apps.
I consider myself really lucky to have purchased a SGS soon after it was released, before all the hype and before a huge dev community was formed. A big Dev community is what gives a phone longevity, not manufacturing support that wanes as soon as their latest and greatest phone is released.
My advice would be to go with a phone that has a big dev community = SGS, Nexus phones and most HTC devices.
I am waiting for the 8 core SGS mark 12 .

So I don't know why WP7 people feel the need to bash the ones who want android for this device. I'm an HD2 owner, have had android on it for basically the entire time I have owned it...and it's been awesome, because lets face it, Windows Mobile 6.5 was garbage. I recently dropped it and cracked the screen pretty severely, checked into getting it replaced by my $8/month phone insurance (which I have since cancelled), and they (not shockingly) advised me that they can no longer replace it with another HD2, but with a HD7 instead.
So I looked here first, wondering how easily I could put android on it and was shocked by the lack of android development, and the numerous attitudes towards it. Obviously it would be better/easier to get another "4.3" inch HTC phone that runs andro-crap", but I won't be able to do that for a couple of months and was looking at a quick fix. I'm just surprised that it hasn't been done, since it's been done on almost EVERY OTHER PHONE. I just don't get it. So I'm going to buy a digitizer and just replace the screen on my HD2. Just thought I would share my experience. Oh, and yes, I have played around with WP7, and while much better than 6.5 it's just not for me.
Let the bashing commence...
No bashing here, well written post, honest and truthful. Nothing wrong with that.

I think its human nature to want something different or odd... I'm sure if it were easy to get android or WP7 on an iphone, heaps would do it just to be different...

I agree with you completely. I'm in the exact same situation as I had a dual boot android/wp7 hd2 and the digitizer broke. Mostly I used android because of the apps, but I like wp7 better for it's sleek design.
I'm baffled how 75% of people on the hd7 threads can say 'JUST GO BUY A ANDROID PHONE" and "why would you want to dual boot an hd7?". I could buy an android phone but, stupid tmobile replaced my hd2 with an hd7 for free. it's a great phone, there are few which are better currently.
In the hd2 threads, most people wanted to push the limits and explore every possible option; that seems to be missing in large part from the hd7 threads. "just go buy an android phone" will never be the answer.
shame on you who say this...
The only reason to bash I can see, is the lack of people reading and realizing that there is a dedicated Android thread just a couple lines above, where stuff like this should have been posted. Haha...
Otherwise, there is just very little interest in getting Android on this device, which means that it makes more sense to go buy an Android phone, because you're just going to be waiting a while for an Android solution, on a device/platform that does not need it as much as something like the HD2/WinMo did. Hence why there is little to no progress on getting Android on this device.

if this is true then why dont you buy a mozart and try this rom...
The overall WP7 posse hardly resembles the WM crowd.
I've been a die hard Windows fan ever since my AT&T 8525-even before that with a couple PPC PDA's. When I lost that phone I replaced it with a Samsung Epix. Despite my horrible experience software fiascoes and the Epix, I still returned to Window's Mobile when I got my Tilt2. It was while I was dealing with my Epix that I discovered a cooked rom on a site that I had not previously heard of, XDA Developers. I now use this site a my primary guide to purchase new phones...if I can't hack it and install custom roms I have no interest in it.
Through my time with my Tilt2 I made some observations about the Windows Mobile community. Many of them were like me and had over time found many CABs that work well for them and were content with a platform that the were familiar with. Many of them were veteran programmers well versed in C++ and could really do some magic. Others just signed a two year contract with the cheapest old smart phones their provider was clearing out. What ever the reason we had our devices in a world where IOS and Android were rapidly taking over. Every one worked together and amazing things were accomplished. In the Touch Pro 2 forums, Android and Ubuntu was running, and a lot of you are familiar with everything that was done with the HD2. These things happened because WM fans by nature enjoyed doing them.
As Windows Mobile phones started to die off through breakage and device upgrades, a lot of my companions switch gears to the Iphone after it made great strides since the first gen EDGE only model, in OS capability, hardware performace, and a now enormous hacking community. Others who wanted remain anti Apple and wanted more freedom out of the box went with Android.
It finally came to my time in the begining of this year to upgrade. I knew very little about Windows Phone 7 devices except that I did not know a single person who owned one and that it was not backwards compatible with any of my software. Being completely anti Apple I began shopping around fully intending to buy an Android device. I started playing with floor models and I noticed one thing about every Android device. No matter how fast the hardware was, when I would touch and slide to unlock, there was always a noticeable lag. I found that to be a bad sign. Then when navigating the phones, they all lack the responsiveness of my wifes Iphone 4. So I tried the Windows Phone devices and they were all incredibly responsive. In all the menus and and web browser I slide my finger rapidly trying to out run the display and I swear I could not find any where that lagged. I was intrigued and hooked. After checking XDA and of all the WP7 phones available to me with AT&T, the HD7s was the only one with custom roms.
I believe this to be the only reason any of us here. Window Phone 7's foundation is simply flawless. Now that's not to say over all the OS is any where near perfect. It is severely lacking in software, customization, and even basic preferences. It is in these ways I've described WP7 as ever more "iPhone" than the iPhone itself. Now all this mean's is the biggest reason any body has a WP7 device is because the actually like it. So it's not far from reason there is little interest in changing operating systems. We've reached a point were all smart phones have virtually equal internal hardware so phone are chosen primarily based on software. The people who find themselves stuck with an HD7 against their liking are a very small fraction of an already small community. Those coming from an HD2 or a Rodium know that to get Anrdroid onto these devices took countless man hours from many very determined and very talented people working together. They just aren't with us here in the HD7 community. We are lucky to have the very talented developers that are here producing custom Windows ROMs.
Own android nd wm7/hd7
I agree with all of you but, with that said this is my take on it. I am using Simple Mobile $60 unlimited plan by the way just so everyone knows. I have both a htc hd7 with a 32gb sd in it- its running mango. I also have three android phones. HTC wildfire s in white, Samsung Vibrant, Htc mytouch 4g(my only 4g phone). Starting from the top. All my android phones have custom roms installed and are rooted. I love android as much as the next guy cause when I use those phones I love the apps and love that I have all of them nearly maxed out on there performance figures due to the roms and overclocking.
This being said all my android phones still can not keep up with my hd7 in everyday use when you talk about smoothness. Like the guy before me was saying as well how all the android phones he tested lagged when unlocking. That is still the same situation here with me after installing custom roms which did make the phones faster and after overclocking made then even faster. But even with my hd7 running a stock mango rom it still is the phone that I use most because of the smoothness and responsiveness that it has when using it for normal everyday smartphone activities like gps, internet browsing, watching videos, playing music, and texting and calling of course. This stock oem wm7.5 mango hd7 works better at all these things than any of my android phones.
This being said I would like to have android on the device as a dual boot that way I would get rid of my other android phones and just have this one phone for both. But, I would still use wm most of the time, which is the reason that I think ppl who own an hd7 or any other wm7 or 7.5 phone own them cause everything works great. and yes i agree with the other guy before me in saying that it does need more development in customizations and applications. but where it lacks here it makes up for in performance and ease of use. so in my opinion there is a plus and minus to both android phones and wm phones. the only question is which one will correct there downfalls first. apples will not be talked about with me cause i hate them but, as far as wm and droid go both need improvements.
Going with this thread this would be my reason for why i think no one has really developed an android system for this device yet cause unlike the android devices the hd7 does everything the way a smartphone should. I would dual boot but, i would never wipe wm7.5 off of it cause that would just be stupid and would be like downgrading. performance wise wm7 > android anyday until android fixes their laggy os.
