Phone was unlocked by the Galaxy S Unlock app.
And the signal is very poor, usually only one bar or no signal.
I've tried a few modems, but the result seems on change.
I found my IMEI is 0049990........
Product code: SGt ActiveAATT
Does a fake IMEI related with signal?
How can I fix the signal problem?
It is quite possible members on xda have faced connection problem with the generic imei, You can only restore the original imei if u had ever backed up the efs folder which contains the NV_DATA.BIN. If u don't have the correct NV file then its not possible to restore it, You can contact connection2005 he can repair it.
Or you can try this method people have said they were able to restore it with this but it dint worked for me when i once tried it.

I tried the method, but still unsolved.
Because I lost my nv_data.bin, there is no any way to edit nv_data to get my IMEI back?
You have to contact connecxion2005 he can do it. Search for mobile tech videos on youtube he is the guy who can help u.

Get it.
I just have UnBrickable Mod from mobiletechvideos last week.
Before spending money to fix, is it any help to replace my nv_data.bin with other phone's?
I find a nv_data.bin of UK version i9000, and I'm trying to replace with it now.
I mailed to mobiletechvideo.com and ask.
They said the signal problem is not related to IMEI, and I should try different modems.
So what modems could fix this problem?
What ROM are u on?

I've tried SensatioN, Illuminance, Espresso, and stock JF6 & KJ3. The signal problems are the same.
Is kj3 (i987 base rom) the one ur currently running? If so try kb1, kf1, kh3 ... the captivate modems, if ur on a i9k rom then use the i9k modems kc1,jk4 ,jl2 ,kg3 (the popular ones)...

It won't work
Even if it did, that would (most likely) change the IMEI, which is illegal in the United States and several other countries
Basically, your IMEI has to be rebuilt using either Connexion2005's services or one of the SPT/RIFF box kits.
My phone is the same way; the more I think about it, the more I suspect that ATT just sent me a device with a broken IMEI. My EFS backup from when I first got CM7 says the generic IMEI and has the product code line completely broken anyhow.
I would be very appreciative if someone could post the segment of their working NV_DATA.bin from address 00188000 to 00188030 so that I can correct mine to what it should be; the 188008 fix frequently linked to on this forum did not finish the job.
EDIT: I just noticed that my EFS backups seem to be tied in SOME way to the CSC flashed to the phone... Does anyone have the latest I897 ATT CSC?

You can dl the firmware from www.samfirmware.com
I don't know about all g the latest leaks, but I know kf1 has the csc file in it.
Or
Download t the Odin 3 file version of KF1 in my sig.I it has it in there. If you aren't registered at samfirm, that would be the easiest way.

Just as an update:
The samfirmware.com site is going to be defunct soon (end of 2011), and all its information will move to a new site: www.sammobile.com. If you had a samfirmware account, you'll have to re-register at the new site. Sounds like they'll have all the firmware at the new place like before, just a new name/site.

No, I'm not meaning data connection. I know I will get edge only.
I mean the phone signal itself is very unstable, sometimes no signal at all.
Well try flashing different modems... I will help you through this.

I'm trying a few modems from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
Most of them have very poor signal or no signal at all. Few can have 1~2 bars of signals sometimes.
I tried those until now:
je5 0~2 bars
jf1 no service
jf6 no service
jh2 0~1
jh3 0~1
jh7 0
ji6 no service
jj4 1~2
jl1 0~2
jl2 no service
kb1 0
ke3 0
kf1 0~2
How I use the modems is download them into sdcard and flash through CWM. Do I miss something?
Or any other issue I didn't notice?
Have you tried RAT selection? This is a workaround for RAT on I897 modems.

Hi, I bought a Cappy in december, I rooted, unlocked it (I'm not in the US) and installed Cognition 2.3b8 first, then moved to 3.X, everything was perfect, but yesterday I started with dropdowns in data service then the whole service, I have signal (changing to out-of-service), but I can't make/receive calls, send messages or get data connection, today I flash the phone back to stock and even in stock I have the same problems, also I already try different modems without luck.
Is this a hardware issue?
Thanks!
Give this a try

Thanks...but I know how to install a custom ROM, I already tried Serendipity, Cognition and changing Kernel to SpeedMod and Firebird and different radios (ZNKP1, JK4, JL2, JL1, JL3) and no luck
Have you confirmed that your phone is still unlocked after flashing back to stock?
Check your IMEI number to see if you don't have the generic one.
Check product code to see if it's not botched also.

Well, after installing stock, I insert my SIM back and did not ask for the unlock code, so I assume it's still unlocked.
My IMEI is the same as in the box and IMEI SV = 01
Where can I check product code??
Try *2767*4387264636#
Thanks! Product code is SGH-I897ZKAATT
Everything seems right, if I had to guess... It's more on the unlocking issue after you flashed Froyo with your network.

I just checked network status screen and everything is off, so the phone it's unlocked :S
Sorry I can't provide you with any more help brotha.
You don't have a corrupted nv_data.bin file, which is good.
Your IMEI number is correct, which I suspected first, cause there were discussion of the generic IMEI number not working on other networks besides AT$T.
Since it doesn't matter what rom, kernel, modem combination you use with no avail.
I would wait to see if someone else chimes in here that might have other ideas.
Things I would do though: Call to see if there is any outages.
Update through kies to see if you get service from the update.
Hope its not hardware related.
Sorry again and good luck. I will keep on searching for ya though

Does it work wireless ?
Does it get phone network, or both data and phone services are unavailable ?
Do you have in wireless and network settings under mobile network the "use data packet" switched on ??
Did you try with a sim from another operator just to see if it's a matter of specific operator settings ?
I got italian language, maybe settings name are a bit different from the ones i mentioned, but that's the concept.

Check if your IMEI is correct, you find it under settings, about, status.
Your correct IMEI is on a sicker under the battery.

mmmm....
are you sure you downloaded the correct rom ? I mean there are different roms for different countries.
While you just reflashed, why dont you go back to original stock rom or to a stable one (one i remember is JPY_JPY_JPY) just to see if everything works fine ?
Anyway....which was the problem you had that required you to flash with odin ??
Yeah you prolly downloaded a rom fir another region if your imei is in tact and ya vant even make calls. If you can make calls and just cant use data then the rom doesnt have your apn settings and you will have to add them manually.

If so there is a chance that the IMEI is reported stolen and blocked at the service provider.

[Q] Just bought a captivate, No Signal is displayed and baseband version is "unknown"
Please, I need your help, I just bought a Captivate for my GF, we live in Honduras, Central America and the phone was supposedly sent unlocked, she inserted the sim card and the phone did not asked for any code, but, it has no signal, it is currently displaying "no Service", and when she goes to look at her baseband version, It displays "unknown"!
It has a crappy ICS rom, since Im an Nexus one owner I dont know a thing about this phone version!
Can you PLEASE! help me?
Can I just flash a CM nightlie over this ****ty ICS rom?
Do I have to upgrade or downgrade anything else?
Please, any help is welcome!
I assume you probably have, but are the APN settings correct?
You can probably flash a CM7 nightly over it. Worst case, it doesn't work and you have to flash back to stock first and try again.
It sounds like you don't have a working modem. If flashing CM7 doesn't fix it, flash a CM7-compatible modem and see if that fixes it.

Lolz good advice...just in the wrong order...
I would flash the modem first....cause it is the least invasive (doesn't wipe anything) and most likely will work.
Roms contain modems, so if fishing as ROM didn't fix it fishing a modem after that is just spinning your wheels.
BUT, since op doesn't even like the ROM...just flash to kk4 stock.
I would also make door that the phone is actually unlocked...but aosp doesn't have the same dialer codes to just dial and check, and i don't know those.

I agree that it is less invasive, but he already said he wanted to go to CM7 so I figured he could skip a step if the flash actually worked. He bought the phone this way so who knows what the previous owner did to it. Both ways should fix his issue though (unless his phone is locked, as you pointed out).
If you flash to the most recent nightly or a kang, the Samsung dialer codes work to check your lock status.

So, thank you guys for helping me, heres what I did:
A friend told me that since I had ICS on it, I had to flash a compatible modem on it, I flashed I9000BVJJPD which is used on cm9.
When it turned on, It asked for an unlock pin, I tried to generate it with the SGSunlock app but didnt worked, so I downgrade it to cm7 (2.3.7) and tried again but with no success...
Tomorrow morning Ill take it to an unlock shop so it can be unlocked (hopefully).
Does the modem that I flashed is the correct one for a network that uses 850 bands?
I heard that some captatives erased the imei causing the "unknown baseband" issue, I dialed *#06# and it retrieved the imei code so, it isnt ****ed right?
any help is welcome, Ill let you guys know how it goes.

But, have you test some of them? Which gave you the best result?
I always include jk4 in my roms as a good standard.

I understand your dilemma. You look at a list of 50 modems and go, "Where do I even start?"
Personally, I have tried lots of different modems, old and new, and I always come back to KP1. I think it's worth adding to your list of modems to try out. I would also try JJJV5 and KG3.

Im having issues with a Galaxy i9000, the problem is that it wont get any signal at all. It just shows the circle with the line across it. The phone is unlocked, and i can tell i already tried about everything.First of all, it does show the right imei number, but for some reason when i try the stock ClaroPR firmware it when it gets into recovery it has 2 diferent csc folders. But it applies the KOR csc instead of PCT which is the ClaroPR csc. So then i apply the PCT csc with csc select apk and it changes the csc to PCT, but i will still have no signal. Everything is correctly mounted i think. Because i deleted the efs folder with Root Explorer and the phone created a new efs folder with the nv_data and nv_data md5 files. Does someone has an idea on why is this happening?
you'll need to restore the efs folder if you made a backup.

Thats the funny thing, i already did that a couple times. And none of that worked. Trust me i used the stock firmware, the ClaroPR froyo and also the gingerbread version. No luck at all, thats the main thing, its a very strange issue. It is still showing the right imei number and also creates a new efs folder if i delete it. Which in some cases ive seen none of that happens. But still no signal. Weird huh?

Hi, here's the story, I flashed CM10 but because I'm new with this phone model I didnt new I had to bacup my eff folder, so when I flashed CM10 it changed my imei, now I cant make any calls or whatever that requires network, I read in here and other forums that I can repair that going back to stock gingerbread but the thing is that I suddenly I can't enter download mode, I tried entering through "adb reboot download" and it only reboots, I tried with the volume +/- pluging usb cable but it still doesnt works, the only method I havent tried yet is with the jig, which I would have to buy or make myself, so I was wondering if I can flash the stock rom from cwm, I couldnt find any zip of that rom, only the odin ones, could you please tell me if I can do that? or gime me a link to the stock cwm flashable rom?

I'm in a similar situation for a different reason. My USB port is broken (bought phone used and it came with a beta CM9). Having problems with not getting any mobile service so I want to flash back to stock and start there. While I'm a software developer, I'm new to smartphones so I want to make sure I get this right.
It seems I can't just download the one-click because it needs USB. You said above that "Mobile Odin" could be used with the one-click if you have root. I assume I do, but what is the tell-tale sign of that? From all my reading so far it seems you can lose it also. Anyway, so if I d/l Mobile Odin from the Play store and d/l one-click with root onto my SD card, I should be good to go - just run the app, select the file and follow the instructions and I'll be back to stock Froyo?
Thank you!

I'm in a similar situation for a different reason. My USB port is broken (bought phone used and it came with a beta CM9). Having problems with not getting any mobile service so I want to flash back to stock and start there. While I'm a software developer, I'm new to smartphones so I want to make sure I get this right.

If you are on CM9 then you are most definitely rooted. However if you want to check go to your app drawer and check for a superuser icon or Super SU icon. If you have either one of those you're good to go. I've personally never used Mobile Odin but I would have to say what you described sounds like the right steps. My question to you is why not go to gingerbread instead of froyo?

Yep, I have the icon. Why do you sometimes lose root when flashing a different ROM? I wouldn't think simply having that app is all there is to it. Anyway, I noticed after I posted my query that the Pro version of Mobile Odin has "EverRoot" so you never lose root apparently.
I figured I'd start with Froyo since that is what my phone should have shipped with and what my new carrier expects. If I still don't see any mobile networks, I figure I'm down to a SIM or hardware problem. I can get wifi on my home network fine, but I live in the middle of a city and see nothing show up when I do a Search for Network Operators. Perhaps I'm wrong being new to these, but I would think I should see at least AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile appear on a list when I search.
The odd thing is when I do Automatically Select a network operator is says I'm "registered on network" yet there's no signal (-110+ dbM and 0-1 asu) and phone status shows me as unknown network and disconnected.
If it does work with Froyo, I'll work my way to GB and ICS and back to CM to see where it breaks.

Well pretty much every custom ROM you install is rooted from the start. If you were on a stock setup you wouldn't be rooted unless you had done it yourself.
With your current setup go to settings>about phone> status and compare the imei listed there with the one under your battery. Also check settings>about phone and look for your baseband. If your imei matches but your baseband says unknown then you are missing a modem and that's fixable without going back to stock. If the imei doesn't match then your efs folder has been erased or corrupted and you will definitely have to go back to stock.
Also if that's the case once you get back to stock backup your efs folder to prevent future issues.

So flashing back to stock WITH bootloader keeps the root (but then you're not technically 100% stock since it didn't come that way).
IMEIs match.
Baseband is I9000UGKG3. I'd also thought of trying a diff modem but this one works for others obviously. I'm in the Midwest if that makes a difference.
Other Status info...
Network: Unknown
Mobile network type: GPRS:1
Service State: Out of Service
Mobile Network state: Disconnected
It does list my correct phone number
IMEI SV: 09
Another newbie question: whenever I do finally get service, how can you tell what speed the data connection is?
Thank you for your help.

Actually stock with boot loaders is just that. Bone stock with the boot loaders added into the flash package you won't be rooted with that package.
The fact that your imei is correct and you have a modem but still have no service is concerning... are you using it on att or are you trying to use a different carrier?
As far as data speed when you're up and running use a speed test app from the play store.

I'll worry about figuring out root stuff later if needed.
Phone was supposed to be unlocked. I'm using it on an MVNO that uses T-Mobile's network. I get no errors or messages when inserting the SIM card so assume I am indeed unlocked. It does load 3 APNs that happen to also use T-Mobile but I must manually enter the APN for my carrier, which I've triple checked with their support.
I'm leaving now to swap SIM cards from the same service on a known good phone to see if mine works in that phone or that one works in mine.

I could be very wrong but it sounds like you're not actually unlocked. Or as you're checking your sim is messed up

Hmmm, is there some way to check other than throwing in a random SIM? Unfortunately, my SIL's phone is newer so she had a smaller SIM card
Most people seem to get a card locked message if they are not unlocked and install a non-AT&T SIM.

It's not the easiest thing in the world to do but I couldn't come up with a different way... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761045
That is actually a link to a tutorial on how to go about unlocking it. The way I see it is if you follow the steps you'll know if it was already unlocked and be able to unlock it if not.
I know that the process works because I followed it to unlock my own captivate.
Edit: I did the manual way and did not use any of the apps listed.

I just verified I have FF 00 00 00 00 00 46 46 in that location so I'm unlocked.

Well if your imei is correct, you have a modem, and you verified you're unlocked... the only thing left is either bad sim or hardware issue with the phone

Seems that way. I'll still try to wipe as clean as I can back to stock and see if there's something wacky in the software that's preventing signal.

Check the sticky thread in the development section for the one clicks and flash back to kk4 stock. It is bone stock and then you can move back up from there. It will not touch your unlock though.

I picked up another used Captivate and this one works. It came with KK4 and a good USB port. I'll flash something onto it soon once I learn how to properly back up everything.
