New to droid3 - Motorola Droid 3

I want to hook up my cousins d3
I'm a frequent on the Epic 4g boards and I've been with android since htc hero so its not new to me and I read up on the d3, however coming from a galaxy s to droid is a lot different than I thougt lol
So my question is how can I root the droid 3 and then flash a rom? What rom do you recommend? Isn't the droid 3 bootloader locked? What's a softloader? What's this CWM bootloader business?
Its so different than a galaxy s! Lol! All help will be appreciated. And sorry for this thread....as a fellow xda'er I know how annoying thesethreads are...but samsung babied me with the gs everything was simpler lol

All you gotta do is hook the Droid 3 up to the computer, install the drivers, download the root program and let it do it's thing. Then you gotta install a version of Clockwork, either Safestrap or Bootstrap depending on the ROM. As far as picking a ROM right now except for Liberty most of them are just basically Verizon ROM based without the junk and are excellent ROMs. Liberty I am not sure but I think combines a few things from the Verizon ROM and a few AOSP features. That is the procedure in a nutshell anyway.
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App

in addition to what he said, yes the bootloader is locked. the clockwork mod is a hijack to allow you to boot into recovery. the safestrap is a 2nd system that runs from the preinstall partition, leaving your default partition intact. CM7 still has some bugs in it. im running MonsterRom but Steel Droid, Dark Droid, are also good BLUR roms (as in motorola blur parts). Liberty has AOSP and blur but i havent tested that out.

Custom Rom Options?

Hey everyone. I'm posting here because I have a friend with a Captivate and I'm trying to get him to root his phone.
I sent him the link to the 1 click root but I don't know what rom to have him flash. I have an EVO and in the EVO forums we have a sticky with all the custom roms listed so it's easy to see what's there. Is there anything like that for you guys?
He's basically looking for a stable 2.2 rom.

The Captivate DEV scene isn't too large right now, (most of them are in the Vibrant section) We have few custom roms, but the ones you can find, along with mods can be found in the Development section of Captivate.

This is very true. Most went to vibrant because they were ex-G1 users. However the good news is the most of the coding will be the same so they are relatively easy to port. I have a feeling the captivate will not be getting as much dev action, and most people are switching from windows mobile or iPhone and have no android dev experience. But it will eventually speed up
Don't have him flash a custom ROM just to flash a custom ROM. Right now there are a limited number of ROMs, and he can read up on them in the dev to see if there is anything changes in the newer firmwares that would make it worth his time to flash. AFAIK, there are no fully functional, stable 2.2 ROMs (although the leaked build for the i9000/international version does mostly work, I think). There are also a few leaked updates to the 2.1 firmware.

Yea, that's why I am asking if there are any stable 2.2 roms yet. But as I gather there aren't. I'll just tell him to keep his eyes open here.
I've been using Cognition 2.2b6 for about 4 months now with no problems. Seems to be the most stable rom out there for the captivate.
I've been using Cognition 2.3b3 for several weeks and it's working great, the only issue for me is the android email process crashes on startup, I use the gmail app anyway, so its a non issue for me... It took 3 or 4 days to get the correct order of opperations, it seems not everything you find on XDA works for every Captivate, I guess AT&T keeps disabling settings and crapware crippling the phone... But the order that worked for me was:
STOCK AT&T 2.2 FROYO:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797282
ROOT:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
JI6 KERNEL:
I did not root with the link in this post (was already rooted when I found it)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804226
COGNITION:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786532
SIDELOAD:
Option two worked for me, option one did not.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738376
Now that I've done all this I could NEVER go back to stock, it's like having a completely different phone... Unbelievable upgrade. F-U AT&T.
Hands down Cognition to start. When he's ready to move on Cognadian Bacon!
Swyping...please read slowly!
Cool. Thanks for all the replies. I just flashed the latest Cognition beta for him yesterday actually. He's so much happier. Haha.

I was gonna say perseption. Its really the most captivate friendly of the ports for other galaxy s phones. You get the reorient kernel with overclock undervoult, universal lagfix, clockwork mod instead of 2e recovery, and you get working bluetooth audio, normal batery life, multiple fonts, password/pin number/pattern security, other things i forgot.
Axura looks amazing but noone will answer my questios about bugs. And there is no known issues listing.

Where are the custom roms?

Wondering why the bionic has a few roms out already and we dont? Do they have a fully working cwm? Am i missing something? Just curious. Thanks.
So far I've seen a deodexed stock rom and an early pre-alpha of CyanogenMod. What else has been posted for the Bionic?
The deodexed ROM is no different than stock for users and offers zero benefits.
The CM7 ROM was created by the lead CM team member of the Motorola Droid and Motorola Droid X (lots of experience with Motorola phones) and because he was donated a Droid Bionic. It's a completely useless ROM at this point as most of the hardware sensors do not work. It boots. Not much else.
Buy cpvcs a Droid 3, ship it to him and he will have a CM7 ROM booting on it within days of receiving it. It'll be just as useless as the Bionic's version....but it'll be there.
Give it time....it is going to be a while before a good solid/stable ROM is released.
First rule of XDA, don't ask for ETA's. If you want a custom ROM, nothing stopping you from trying to cook one your own.
Edit, hit the thanks instead of quote, they really should move that button

Where in my post does it ask for an eta???? I was asking why. Its a simple question.
heres the thing...waiting for CM7 will be worth the wait.. mmhmm.
..
They can flash, they're using the same flashing method that the D2, DX are using with 2nd init and hijacking. Hashcode hasn't enabled flashing on the D3 recovery yet because he's trying to do something a little different and a little safer from what I understand. From his explanation over in the clockwork recovery thread in development he's working more on a dualboot flashing system where we would basically leave the stock system intact and run the custom rom off a different partition/folder. This would allow us to boot to the stock rom if something happens during the flash process on the custom rom. Since using the 2nd init and hijack and not having an unlocked bootloader, CWR gets loaded into the preinstall partition along with the hijack files, so there's a chance these can get overwrote while flashing if something goes wrong and potentially soft brick the phone.
Don't worry the D3 is the flag ship phone that won't go to much longer with out some kick ass roms. But it is some BS that the bionic is getting roms right off the bat, while we wait. But I would be happy to send a d3 to those guys... if it would help or will bionic development and hacks work for the d3 as well????

Since when has their been rules on topics asking ETA's on this forum, or any other forum in general? I know it's taboo to ask questions that have already been answered in several posts, but there are several forums specifically about speculating the ETA of not only just devices or OTA leaks, but about the cooking of roms on freshly rooted phones as well. The question of this post is legit, especially for users without the experience that more knowledgable users like tcrew and you (lordgodgeneral) have contributed to answering a question ALOT of people in the droid 3 community are wanting to know. Glad this topic existed, helped me out..

Because the bootloader is still locked. The Bionic will probably get unlocked slightly faster than the D3 because they have more developers working on it, but theyre so similar that i would expect the D3 to get an unlock the same day as the Bionic. Unless Motorola finally unlocks the bootloaders but who knows when that day will come...
Edit: there is an UNL3ASH3D rom now available for the bionic, i didnt think they could flash yet in CWM?

It doesn't matter if the Bootloader is locked. It will probably never be unlocked.
Its been a rule since the devs on this particular forum specifically asked us not to ask for eta's. We have people cooking roms, were just waiting for our awesome version of CWM to be stable and safe to use. I'm as anxious as any of you, but don't hassle the devs that are working so hard to make our phones the best out there. Give them time.

ROM Manager Premium Clockwork Recovery
Until now I have been more or less bemused by the complaints that the Droid 3 was being somewhat neglected in the development community in favor of the Bionic, assuming that there was more than a little exaggeration of the progress on the Bionic vs D3. Now, however, I am beginning to wonder if the complaints may not have been somewhat justified. I know no one owes the D3 owners anything on the dev side, but to see the Bionic now able to use ROM Manager while I sit with a previously paid app that does nothing on my phone is admittedly frustrating. I keep reading posts saying that any Bionic developments will be followed rapidly by similar progress on D3, so I hope I can use ROM Manager on my phone in a few days.

Yeah, I'm guessing there is a special way it boots into recovery with the custom app because I can't get Rom Manager to boot into recovery..

List your Steeldroid and Monster ROM bugs here.

The only determining factor on whether I stick with OEM ROM or flash monster/steeldroid ROM is this: do these custom ROMs have a single bug?
So, users of monster and steeldroid ROMs: are there any bugs?
There are absolutely bugs in both ROMs but there are bugs in OEM too. Both SD and Monster run so much faster than stock. You can still do everything youre used to on the roms. CM7 had the phone broke at one point but even thats fixed now.
Thanks.
I've got one more question if anyone can answer it. Do either of these ROMs I mentioned work on the Verizon Wireless Droid 3 or the GSM Droid 3?
I own the Verizon Wireless one (gotta make sure I don't flash an incompatible ROM by accident).
What, DarkDroid not good enough for you? :'(
Anyways, all roms out right now have been made for the Verizon XT862.

Being someone who doesn't enjoy flashing ROMs, I find it hard to tell which ROM does what but I thought I heard that Steel Droid and Monster were the oldest ones which made me assume they are more consistently stable.

Ever since I flashed SteelDroid 3.0, the market app won't let me make purchases. I tried flashing Market 3.2, 3.0.26, and 3.1.something, and I tried the Root Explorer replace Vending and uninstall update method and nothing seems to work.
Not sure if its the ROM or something else, but very frustrating.
I'm having the same market problem with Monster, I brought it up in the Roms thread, hopefully it will be fixed in the next update

I went in to the recovery mode of bootstrap and then went to safe mode to install zip from sd card and i got it to install. Although when I reboot in safe mode nothing starts and when i boot in regular mode it seems exactly the same? I was trying to get the monster rom on 1.2 need help am i missing a step>? I followed the instruction and i did not notice that i had done anything different.........
No issues with darkdroid or steeldroid 3 from what i've found with my own slight notification mods for both, not had any market buying issues with either, flush the cash of the app or reinstall the market, failing that reinstall your roms from scratch.

[Q] Top Droid A855 ROMs?

Hey guys!
So I'm still rocking with my Project Elite ROM right now, but I'm kinda getting bored with it. I know the Pre-Pre-Alpha for the ICS is out, but there are so many updates and such, which just makes me want to wait for the beta stage.
I've tried out the MIUI rom, but wasn't diggin' the "iPhone" look. And most of the lockscreens on it are in Chinese, which, no offense, turns me off, since I can't understand it.
Can you guys help me out with which ROM to get? And can you also leave me some reasons why it's a good ROM to get?
Thanks
~Jin
If people are wondering, I'm flashing ChevyNo1 SS 5.6
Let you guys know if it's good or not
This feels funny, commenting on my own thread. But for those still reading, Chevy's ROM felt sluggish on my droid, and I didn't like the transitions and such.
Any other ROMs suggested guys?

Try CM7 it has a 800 mhz kernel:
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices/motorola-droid <--- The site is down right now.
Or try Steel Droid.. based of CM7 with some cool improvements and changes and has a 1 ghz kernel:

I'm trying liquid at the moment. But I have a problem with the folders. When I open them, they look funny over other widgets.
I'll try the others?
GPA18/Chevys1. 2lv
Tried em all. Always come back to the GPA series.
I am using gpa 17 with his kernel at 1.1 and it runs smooth

Vanilla "de-blurred" GB ROM?

Haven't been able to find one, but I was hoping someone knew if there was a vanilla GB rom for the Droid 4. I want to get a "de-blurred" version on GB on the D4 until we get ICS. Anyone know of one? Thanks in advance!
There's a few roms that still have Motoblur but with less bloatware, but none that match your description. For a true "vanilla" GB experience you'd probably want CM7, but Hashcode pretty much abandoned his work on it for CM9. That was on the Droid 3, I highly doubt there's anything for the Droid 4 at this point.
Sent from my DROID4 using Tapatalk 2
Unfortunately, the biggest hold-back has been getting a deodexed version of the stock ROM. I tried deodexing once so far, and my result didn't boot. At the moment, I'm running one of the Nightlies of AOKP that has proven to be particularly stable, so whether I will go back to trying to deblur the stock ROM, I don't know. Honestly, I haven't seen much interest in it. You can try my Motoblur LT ROM for now and see how it works for you, though. I did replace the launcher with Zeam and added the stock Car Home, but that's about it I'm afraid.
I used this to deblur my phone a few minutes ago and it seems fine so far. btw i DID NOT hard reset my phone.
I'm running Eclipse 1.3.4, and it's de-Blurred enough that I can stand it. Intall a launcher, and you'd hardly know there is any Blur left.
Eclipse is deodexed.

Is it possible to build CM7 from source for the DROID 4? Can we use the vendor files the devs are using to build ICS?
Sent from my DROID4 using Tapatalk 2
We could start with the D3 port, and update it and go from there, but after talking with Hashcode, I was reluctant to work on it because I am not 100% familiar with how Safestrap works. Unfortunately, I rely HEAVILY on my phone for my school and work, and if I accidentally brick it, I am in big trouble.
