Mod Edit: Moved to Off Topic
Yay another crazy thread from Shadow_Android!
So how the title says what brought you to xda?
I'll start!
So one day while i was using my xperia mini pro it got really slow and hot i got mad and the phone suddenly rebooted
From that day and on it would happen like 3 times a day, it got really frustrated
At that time i didn't know about root and custom roms
After a few weeks i went to a party a my grandma's house, my cousin that know a lot about hacking asked me if i had my phone rooted and i was like "what the hell is that?" so we went upstairs to his room where he had his laptop and everything else
After a few minutes he got my phone rooted and he told me all the cool things i could do with it
the same day at my house i started looking for apps that needed root i came across some really cool apps with cool features like being able to change the font of the phone and the bootanimation and to be able to eliminate all the bloatware
I was really happy with my rooted xperia mini pro but the reboot problem was still there
my cousin had also told me about roms and all that crap but at that time i didnt pay much attention so in my search for making my phone faster i came across this site
I was really amazed of all the new features the custom roms had so i decided to try them out!
From there and on it was all about flashing roms and staying updated in the rom i used which was cyanocomb (really good rom)
After flashing my first rom i made an account so i could post my opinions and suggestions about the roms
After 7 months of using my xperia mini pro i sold it and bought a brand new g2 unlocked
That was my story know its your turn!
I started off on ppcgeeks forums back in the winmo days, cooking roms etc. I then made my way to xdandroid, then finally purchased a sony x10, joined xda in hopes of rooting it, sold the x10 and bought a stock DZ after reading I could sim unlock it myself! Haven't looked back since. Love xda, and love the development that goes on.

Bought my G2 because at the time it was the best phone and had a keyboard. Knew about root and all that with my computer tech background but needed a reliable forum to get answers to harder questions. read for a few weeks actually before I joined and posted and tried helping ever since
For me it started with my first smartphone, the Sony Ericsson X2 (looks very nice, but the software... oh god) anyways, yeah just searched random stuff on Google on how to improve it, because this phone was terribly slow and had so many problems and one of the links just brought me XDA,
For me it was being on a G1 and wondering how to tweak it. A google search led me to a youtube video about Super D rom and within that video was a link to XDA. Ah the memories.

I came here for the first time trying to put Android on my old T-Mobile Wing. Now that I have an Android phone, I come here all the time.
I originally bought a G1 and was fine with it for a while. At the time I wasn't very tech savvy, although I had built a computer, and had no idea you can mod it. I started reading Android blogs and started seeing these posts about rooting the G1 and doing all sorrts of mods on it. I soon found out my soon-to-be-brother-in-law, who was way more savvy, had a G1and had rooted his phone. So I asked him to root mine and he installed CM3.x, which was Cupcake based and was done by cyanogen himself as this was before the CM explosion, and showed me the XDA thread. From then I was hooked.
Edit: @G1ForFun, I remember using SuperD! That was a badass ROM with the memory hack!

For me it was simply to see what i could do with my G1, tweaks and all that good stuff, I simply love to hack my phones, I dont post much i mostly read because my questions are always answered before i even ask .. this place is awesome man.. now I have G2 and im learning "ADB" and its a breeze.. these Devs are amazing and the community is so helpful.. My home away from home
Like some of the others I got a G1 and then found out that XDA was the place where everyone was tweaking it. Started with android 1.0 and enjoyed the build up to cupcake etc. First onscreen keyboard. Getting the video camera to work. Getting first multi-touch. Then getting Sense on the G1. I was addicted. Now with the Vision the scene is so fragmented with so many different android models. But I still try to keep up with what is happening. Can't wait for the attempt to get ICS on our handsets.

I had a Tmobile Dash (HTC Excalibur) and WinMo5.0 was killing me. Google brought me here.

I came here when I first had my now retired HTC Hero (GSM version) and was looking to get some extra performance out of it. As I am still doing now with my DZ, that meant installing some Sense-free ROM.
I first came to xda after trying to find some programs for my HTC diamond, and from when i came to the site i found all the customroms i could get. I had my HTC diamond for 2 years (still running android). But last year i found out that i needed a Android phone, with a physical keyboard. So i got the Desire Z, and its the best phone i've ever had.
First time login to xda bcoz i want to root my DZ. Got all the information & successfully root my DZ.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I first came to xda when Cupcake was leaked (maybe ported from mytouch?) for the G1.
I actually rooted my phone solely for the virtual keyboard and the multitouch hack way back when you had to telnet into your phone to root. "wtf is telnet?!" I ended up figuring it out, and the Android community is now one of the best communities that I've ever been a part of.
The G1 days were awesome btw, when we had everyone working on a single device.. JesusFreke, Cyanogen, TheDude, haykuro, etc.

After having my G1 for a couple of months, I discovered xda by the search terms: hacking Android. I read up on rooting, appplying themes and installing custom ROMs for my G1. I learned a lot here at xda. Rooting an android phone makes everything so much better. I have always been a fan of getting more bang out of technology.

First Android phone was the HTC Hero and I came here to get some optimized ROMs for it so it would run smoother. I've been here ever since, currently have a DZ, looking to upgrade soon again.
well, i remember that i googled a thing that day, i forget what the thing is, and MR. Google brought me here, then i found there are so many modules here and people seems to know a lot, LOL So come to Xda every day has become a part of my life
I was trying to root my DZ with some finnish instructions.
They weren't complete, so i needed to search for help

I am new to the Android world after using an Nokia n95 for 3 years
after reading about Android devices on Engadget,... i finally decided to order a HTC Desire (GSM) now instead of an iPhone 4 D) and now i feel left alone about how to start with customizing. Its probably just like trying to explain what jailbreaking is for iDevices to others who don't know a bit about it, or like explaining your Grandparents what the Internet is.
I would like to stick with a widely spread ( fast bugfixes ) ROM or how ever this works just like CyanogenMod (correct me if i'm wrong). I would like to know if i can theme these like the the Apple system works or have to make a totally own ROM.
Gererally i really don't know how this system works and i am trying to get this puzzle together
if you can give me a link to a big HOW-TO or GUIDE for beginners like me that would be very nice
Thanks
Cheers! Go to desire forum/Android development. There is a sticky thread there called how to root tutorial. Root for your understanding is jailbreaking(in fact quite different for devs). About roms there are 2 types of roms available AOSP(like cyanogen, defrost etc....basically you get standard Android) and of course sense roms(lots of themes available for this as well). For any additional question just ask.

this is just basically just to see if you can remember how you got into the hacking world, and it'd be nice to know the device that started you off too! =)
well i got into this with my first smartphone, the tmobile shadow. i was perfectally fine with they way it was untill my sister told me about a website (allshadow.com and xda ) where i could do alot with it! so i checked it out, and with due time i enjoyed it, and eventually grew out of it and moved on with the touch pro 2 and actually started using XDA from then out
Sony PSP custom firmware scene, then got HTC Kaiser, then Touch Pro 2, now HD2. Before the psp stuff, I was modding my XP comp and my guitar, amps, and effect pedals.
Gotten kinda bored with it all lately tho, used to be that if it had current passing thru it, I found a way to make it run linux. I haven't gotten on a pc in 2 months and dont even miss it. My phone is all the more internet I need or have time for anymore, and it's as modded/hacked as its gonna get.

I got into hacking phones when I got my moto V710 (on verizon) and I realized they had disabled side loading .mp3 ringtones. Every knows the class action lawsuit they had because they advertised that as a feature. I started seem editing then flashing different firmwares and it all snowballed into full on modding whatever I can get my hands on.
I started with a ipod touch 2g and jailbroke it. Then got the 3g then 4g... Then I got this... knew about root because I dual boot linux windows, I thought if this was linux it was rootable, started there

+1 Dis. I got in basically the same way. I jailbroke the 2G, got Android Froyo running on it (iDroid project) and JB'd the 3GS.
Now I have an Atrix Rooted and with gingerblur.

well i didnt start till i got my captivate when it came out found XDA and boom from there have been an addict
Oh man, I forgot about seem editing, I was doing that back on the Moto Razr lol. Getting the party lights goin and making themes was big stuff back then. Jeez that seems so long ago now lol

I actually started with my Nintendo DS, then I moved to my Touch Pro 2 with dual booting and loading multiple roms
Now I have my Nexus S baby that I take care of better than my vital organs haha Those can be replaced...

I got bored... So I googled things to do with a HTC Hero.... Found theunlockr then got pointed to xda.... Found out someone had stolen my username but I tried the username with my normal password and it worked
My first smartphone was the vogue and i enjoyed it how it was and knew about xda very little and found a way to stream radio and xm radio on here and havent visited it since 2008.
i then got a tp2 and actually was fine with it until i heard about wm 6.5 was out on custom clean roms so i finally got up the courage and time to read on how to unlock and flash roms.
i was addictted to mighty roms over at ppcgeeks and loved the taskbar mods and all the fun stuff such as getting rid of crapware that sprint put on it and made it better and had 6.5.5 a few months later and enjoyed it til i heard the first fast android phone with keyboard came to sprint and had all the hardware specs on it : The Epic 4g, unlock htc phones it didnt leave any feutures out of it and im loving it 7 months later.
i read up on rooting and rooted and started flashing roms and mods and been even more happy, this phone can do it all.
I also have a jailbroken ipod touch,
So it all started with my tp2 getting irritating waiting for sprint to deliver an update to 6.5 and the ugly colors on the interface of sense
It started with my old and grey (it's actually black) HTC Touch back in 2006 and a part of me just can't be satisfied with a stock product. No can do babydoll, no can dosville.
well i had a piece of crap sidekick lx and my cousin had a g1 rooted and i saw the true possibility of a phone so i bought a white g1 and he helped me hack it and get started now im rocking a mytouch 4g with CM7
haha, some great stories so far!
its funny how seeing little things go a long way to opening doors for you to do more!
also cause of my TP2 i ended up getting 3 friends get a TP2 cause they were blown by the awesomeness that it is! lol
Started with my linux based moto ROKR E8. What a pos that phone was, but i loved it. I made it do anything my friends iphone could do, basicly turning it into a monster that used wayyy to much power. Then i got a motorola defy. Flashed some of Higgsy and HandlerExploits roms. That wasnt enough for me though. I tried updating to 2.2 and kept getting stat. 7 error. Then i ended up here. Htc droid incredible, stock rooted. Not really feelin anything in the dev section over there. Maybe ruby if we dont get a 2.3 update soon. But ya, im still learning.

Well, I first started off by hacking with psp custom firmware then I moved onto game hacking such as COD/Battlefield. As soon as I got my X8 I went to the internet to find out how to get Android 2.2 on it, google lead me here now I have a Xperia Play and HTC Desire S but my only interest is to hack my X8.
I started hacking when I was like 6 and I hacked AOL for free internet then I moved on to learning some C++ at 11 and then I started hacking my Motorola Q. Started Android with the Nexus One after seeing how open Android was (ex-iPhone user)
I started patching with Siemens Mobile in year 2005, next Sony Ericsson K750i, Nokia and now SGS.
Thinking about buying a new og droid from amazon. Im downgrading from my Bionic as its bootloader locked and can't stand not having soap. I've had the DROID incredible and battery was horrible no matter what I did, had the fascinate, charge, and now am looking to stick to my android roots until my upgrade in november. So should I do it?
Honestly, I was thinking about doing it myself a while back. Don't know about the new ones but the OG Droid as I remember was very responsive to overclocking and ran great. I loved mine. Thing felt like a tank. Only thing to consider is CM will be dropping support for the OG Droid with CM9. Droids are dirt cheap and if you're good with fixing gadgets, you can get one with a broken digitizer for next to nothing.
I just recently fullfilled my 2 yr contract and was looking at new phones, but decided to try rooting and using a custom ROM on my OG Droid to get back some speed and functionality. I am no longer planning to fork over $ for a new phone
They're cheap, so the risk is minimal, but imho it is a painful experience running anything higher than Froyo/CM6 on the OG Droid. I know people swear by CM7 (and various scripts like V6, etc), but I have never gotten CM7 or any other GB ROM running smoothly for me.
The problem isn't the speed (I have mine OCed to 1.2ghz), its the memory. 256mb just isn't enough anymore.
so cm6 is the way to go? I have no problem with that. Whats the better setup with cm6 as far as kernel matching with cm6? Would like to hear some setups from anyone using the old school og droid.
Currntly running PE6. 5 on my og droid with the stock kernel which is 1.05Ghz lv. Have used the V6 scripts in past with so so results, am currently using Juwe's Ram Manager with pretty successful results.

Try going even farther back. Android 2.1 XD. I still have the old files sitting on my hard drive.
thanks! keep them coming
Looks like project elite 6.5 for me, unless they have something newer out. Anything else I need to know about project elite? Whats the verdict on it? Its hard to find info on the og droid roms, so much just scattered around.
It's an asop rom built by actngrezy, he has stated is working on a version 7 but nothing on it recently or date. Alot of info on PE roms at Droid Forums.

are you guys kidding me? this device is SO SLOW it's completely unusable. No matter how you tweak it, 256MB is just not enough. The day you go to a 512mb device, you will NEVER be able to return.... seriously
wow and who are and how have you helped the xda community. Try using a device with more than 512mb. I have. If I wanted your dumbass opinion on the d1 specs I would have asked for them. Clearly you have zero reading skills. Go troll somewhere else.
I found a brand new d1 for 100. Should be here today, looking forward to stepping back in time!
Ever think not everyone can afford a 299.00 phone. I love my d1, 256 and all.

well that's exactly it. I have come to the conclussion that I don't need an expensive phone anymore and actually my favorite phone was the htc magic running amon ra rom Three years ago. I have five main uses for android in my little world. phone, facebook, xda, pandora and email. Anything past that and the novelty dies off after a couple of days
Anyone have a working link for p.e. 4.2?

Gingerbread roms I'd recommend is Simply Stunning, Liquid, Project Elite, CushZero (as I'm using right now) im getting really good memory. I have been along time Droid user and tried just about every single rom that has been developed for it and finally found one that I can stick too.
If you're going to use Gingerbread, I'd recommend to use v6 supercharger (option 3 or superminfree calculator settings)

I am interested in how others have learned the ability to program and manipulate java/android code. I have been using computers since Atari 2600,but never was able to get around to programming. now I am looking to get started, but it looks very daunting. any advice, stories, etc to get me on my way would be most appreciated.
It's a long road but I would start off learning some simple programming concepts using something like the Khan academy's CS programme: khanacademy.org/cs
After that I would then try and learn Java using something like docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/java/index.html
And finally I would then move onto the Android Developer Training found here developer.android .com/training/index.html
I too would like to get my feet wet in android development, both in ROM mods and apps. I have worked with Unix and Linux in a business environment in the past. Do you think this experience will help level the learning curve.

Looooong way. First, I got Xperia X10 mini pro. Thought that phone was not a speed monster, I want it back. I wanted to root it, for overclocking. So, I got here. I registrered as vaderx10minipro and downloaded Super One Click or something. Then, after two months, I got Desire Z (wait, I forgot Wildfire, but I had it in one month). After a half year of f*cking annoying white ''HTC Sense reloading screen'', I got enough. I rooted it. It wasn't easy, but finally I rooted it. I remember my first custom ROM. It was Virtuous Unity. After some time and looking in to flashable .zip's, I made my first ROM. And half year later, I got HTC One X. And I'm here now, with old Samsung, One X and Xperia X1. Enough?
EDIT: And I learned a lot here, both english and development. Thanks XDA.

You can even make Android Apps without using that much Java code. Only web Html Css Javascript.. There are frameworks out there like PhoneGap that help you get started!
Verizon sucked me in a two year contract, had the OG Droid X...never got around to rooting or anything special cuz I ended up swapping out with an X2 for free. My girl has the OC X too and ended swapping for the Droid Incredible 2. Once we both got those I got into reading about rooting, roming, moding and got really interested. Rooted my X2, rooted my girls INC2. Rooted a Droid Charge...now I'm on the Atrix 2 on AT&T...rooted and running the best...I love XDA now...better then dumb ol facebook!

Hi there. I have been using my m7 for nearly 2 years now and was going to upgrade to m9 this year. Since m9 dissapointed me really and I have never been a fan of Galaxy series I may stay with my beloved m7 for a bit longer. It is really great phone unfortunately it became laggy and unresponsive some time ago. Not mentioning poor (!!!) battery life... As I was going to upgrade it never actually bothered me enough to think about fixing this. Since now. If I am going to spend at least few more months with this device I would like it to perform as it did before, or close to it.
Updated to Lollipop recently but I cant blame lollipop as performance was bad long ago before update, phone never been rooted, 100% stock, all unwanted apps uninstalled/disabled, only essential apps being used, always Auto sync off for everything, localizations off, I dont use fb, twitter etc only viber sits in the background and Google Now launcher as I got bored with BlinkFeed.
Moving to qeustions... Is this normal for m7 to loose on performance after 2 years usage? Maybe it is just normal for all smartphones after some time and this is just me expecting too much from my "old" ONE? Are there any ways to improve the way my phone works, can involve rooting if necessary so I will finally learn how to do it What are your suggestions friends?
I believe there is many like me and hope this thread will help others as well.
Thanks in advance
