Hello guys.
Official Gingerbread is finally available on Portugal.
I have currently Stock Froyo + Speedmod installed on my Galaxy S, so how can i update to Gingerbread?
Can i just update and Speedmod will still work?
Or should i install a stock kernel, then update, then install the Speedmod (Gingerbread version)?
Or i shouldn't update at all?
i'm interested in this too,i'm in the same situation (froyo+speedmod) and i'm quite a noob
is there someone who can patiently give us an hint about that? also about a good battery life gingerbread rom?
This is what I did.
1. Disable any lagfix - convert back to rfs (very important).
2. Back up all apps, contacts, data, photos etc from internal memory. Use something like Titanium backup or Mybackup pro.
3. Update through Kies for an official update.
4. Install latest Speedmod kernel for gingerbread (not Froyo version). Use odin.
5. Install superuser from clockwork mod recovery.
6. From recovery, do a factory data reset (make sure you have everything backed up first!)
7. Restore previously backed up apps, data etc, sync with google calendar.
8. Redo lagfix from recovery (convert to ext4).
Battery life at first seemed all over the place but has now settled down and is similar to Froyo/speedmod.
The phone is smoother and faster to use.
Thank you a lot!
That's exactly what i'm going to do!
thanks colin! 1 thing: i read somewhere that if you deleted some bloat app from operator (e.g. o2) you wont be able to update from kies anymore. is that true?
my phone it's not a locked one but anyway i think i always got o2 apps on it (which i unfortunately uninstalled instead of freezing it) and carrier-related updates.
am i going to have any kind of prob in the process?

If Kies is showing that there is an update available then I think you should be ok.
If not then it is a case of flashing the whole firmware with odin. Open phone dialer and enter *#1234# and you will see the firmware details you are on now. It is worth making a note of these so you can reflash your current firmware if there is a problem.
okidoki i'll try that!
update:
PDA:I9000AOJP5
PHONE:I9000AOJP3
CSC:I9000VIAJP3
pretty old looks like o2 release. being my phone unlocked i never understood why i got o2 releases on it
so when i am not able to upgrade by kies i should reflash stock thru odin.
what parameter (pda/phone/csc) i have to look at to get the right firmware?
Everything is working better than ever, except for one little thing: The GPS.
Today i turned on GPS and tried to use my navigation software (CoPilot) and the GPS signal just didn't fix at all!
I ended by not using it, but i don't know why it doesn't work. It always worked wonderfully well before this update...

Still try kies first. If no luck there is a lot of info in this thread.

Make sure you can get into recovery mode first. Power button, volume up and home pressed all at once. Let go home button when Samsung logo appears.
ok thanks for the infos! i'll do it all when i can have a bit of relax,i am relocating so i need a working phone during these days
so i did it then!
flashed darky's resurrection 10.2 and then updated to doctorz rom jvt leaving ext4 enabled with no probs: another phone
just needs a good theme now..

For those who down play twitter, this is why it can be good. Samsung has released a direct way to get the JI6 update without waiting for OTA via Mini Kies(really? lol). So for those who want it that way, here you go

JI6 Update problems
Okay, now after updating through Kies Mini, I keep getting errors:
com.android.phone
android.process.media
com.android.calendar
etc... has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
and then you have to hit "Force Close"
...anyone know how to fix this?
Stock Vibrant
Lag Fix & Root
...FIXED
I just flashed to stock and then to JI6 with ODIN and now everything works.
after updated, my phone now stuck at bootscreen
i updated mines successfully..
please be AWARE that you have to DISABLE any lagfix before performing this update or else you may soft brick your phone. if you soft-bricked, i suggest flashing back to stock JFD build via ODIN and then update to ji6 via Kies Mini.
also be sure your usb debugging is on.
i also suggest you refer to the samsung kies mini thread that was originally posted in the vibrant general section since most have shared their experiences with updating there.
so according to the site,,, GPS fix is not included in JI6, it will be available in a few weeks...
few weeks = December

Anyone done this and able to see fandango app in the market? I am not able to
My friend got the update OTA and is able to see fandango.
i did it successfully but don't see the fandango app either
duno what's going on there
How can I download this update!!! Stupid me hit cancel instead of install when i got my notification for it. I cant figure out how to update it now.
not updating?
i spoke to my local tmobile rep about what this update is really about and if it's even worth it for me to update...he's rooted and running ryans lagfix, one of the gps fixes and some other goodies like myself, his opinion, not worth it...wait for 2.2.
so i'm ignoring this update, any opinions?
Kies Mini Clockwork flashable
If anybody is interested, I have thrown together a Clockwork flashable JI6 update for personal use. There are 2 versions.
*Warning, proceed at your own risk as I cannot and will not be held responsible for your actions. Always perform a ClockWork ROM backup before flashing. The same rules apply regarding lag fixes as all other ROMs.
1st - This will wipe your data!!!
2nd - No format included (While this will not wipe your data, you will loose root and any installed mods... I recommend using the 1st dl if your coming from anything other than stock or leaked)

If this is a question regarding missing applications in the Market...
Quoting from this thread. The directions below worked for me running JI6. Just make sure to look for UVJI6 on both lines, rather than UVJI2. FYI, I changed them back after I downloaded and installed all of my apps in hopes of Google rectifying the issue (assuming it's on their end).
++++how to fix missing apps in the market++++
Missing market apps with new firmwares is always an issue because the market does not recognize the fingerprint. You need to be rooted and should open the file /system/build.prop in a text editor Scroll down till you come to the section titled # Do not try to parse ro.build.description or .fingerprint. After this are two lines, on which the name of the firmware will be stated as T959UVJI2. Change the ast three letters in the name on both lines to JFD. Then save the file and reboot, and then go to market and download and install a couple of apps. After this the missing apps will show up again and won't go away until you install another unofficia firmware Last.
+++ Thank rajendra82 for this market fix, works great +++
Fandango movies . I have it on mine. I also used kies to update jI6 , successfully updated with no problems. I lost root but afterwards I rerooted.

THANK YOU! I haven't been able to get the OTA (been prompted 5/6 times) and didn't want to wipe with Odin. Everything appears to have worked with no issues and no wiping.
So I rooted my phone with CF-Root-XX_XEU_JPY-v1.3-BusyBox-1.17.1.zip using Odin. However, my phone has the firmware version JPW ( I could've sworn it was JPY ), and then installed and ran One click Lag Fix and since doing it certain apps would crash and the phone became sluggish. So, I undid the Lag Fix but things got worse from there, such as not being able to add widgets to home screens.
So I performed a factory reset but the phone is still rooted and a little sluggish still. I've also noticed the addition of the messaging icon on the bottom bar and it wasn't there before.
How do I unroot the phone? Or am I stuck until I update to Gingerbread?
Cheers.
Ray
just flash the correct CF-root over the current one, using Odin,
then do a wipe in recovery and you should be fixed up.
if not, then its not related to the CF-root, you will have to flash a full firmware.
Thanks for the reply. However, there isn't a CF-Root for JPW nor is there a Firmware for JPW available for download from samfirmware.
I really should have looked before I leapt.
In conclusion, I'm an idiot.
All the best.
Ray
flash a kernel instead, that gives you the 2e recovery, plus a ton of extra tweaks
I've got the 2e recovery, thanks to the root I performed.
Whats worrying me is though, will my warranty be void either with my network carrier or with Samsung whilst this root is in place?
I understand Gingerbread is just around the corner, and that upgrading firmware will remove rooting, so I don't mind waiting a couple of weeks or so for the 2.3 update. After this balls up ( entirely my own fault ) I'm not confident of flashing any new firmwares or kernels or anything else until I've learned a thing or two first, as I've only had the phone a month and have mainly been a Nokia / Symbian user.
Many thanks for your help.
Ray
rooting will void warranty, but you can remove root access so know one ever knows,
flashing an official firmware will remove root, thats entirely upto you.
you can flash what you like, you can always go back to stock before sending off for repair
Well, being a total noob to Android I think I'll wait for Gingerbread and leave things on stock.
What disappointed me with Kies was I couldn't re-install the stock Firmware like I can do with my Nokia via Nokia Ovi suite or Nokia Software updater. That comes in really useful in situations such as this.
Oh well, I've learned some valuable lessons today so not all bad.
Once again thanks for the assistance.
All the best.
Ray
you can spoof kies to make it update to whatever you want
I tried that, and kies said an update was available. So I proceeded to update, Kies downloaded the update, then said my phone cannot be updated.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Hey guys,
I'm fairly new to the modding of Android phones (my previous phone was a TYTN II) and I'm having some problems restoring my backups via Clockwork mod (which is a bit of a pain in the ass for me, as I think you understand).
Ive tried to flash my phone and stuff, but I can't download apps from market/start google talk (I know this is related to eachother) when I have a mdc rom installed. This is not really the problem I'm asking a solution for, but the real problem is, that I can't go back to my old rom and stuff. I have rooted my phone, installed CWM, made a backup, but somehow it keeps freezing at the loading screen of the phone whenever I have restored a backup and reboot the phone.
Atm I have resetted my phone with NVFlash, I have not yet innstalled anything but I still have a backup which I'd like to restore. This is my situation:
LG-P990: Android 2.2.2, Baseband 1035.21_20110315 (I updated this with Paul's update), Kernel 2.6.32.9, Build: FRG83G, LGE version: v10b.
Anyone has an idea what I'm doing wrong? Did I miss a step in the process? Please help me out!
I'm no expert, so you should probably wait for one of them, but I had a similar problem and it's important to do a wipe before installing the ROM. (There's two wipe options, run them both)

please check if the DATE in your settings is correct. the rom I had previously installed was set to MAY and this made it impossible to use gtalk and download roms.
yeah sounds silly, but worth checking
ah well since you have reset already. but maybe you get back in the same situation at one time.
Thanks for the quick replies.
@Marco_ch: I already tried the date problem, literally went thru 100 of pages to find out what the issue was with the gtalk, but nothing helped, so I'm guessing I made a mistake with the rooting or something...
I already reset, but this is the third time I've reset, I've already tried flashing my device 3 times and each time I end up not being able download apps.
@Jakkelomme: As far as I know there is only 1 wipe option? Reset factory settings? I always do that before I install a rom yes.
well I had the same problem (gtalk, market) but I gave it another shot with this:
http://romkitchen.org/lg/?s=generator
its running brilliantly on my device. have you tried that one yet?
Tried it a few days ago, when it was anotehr version, might try it again now, thanks. Which options do you suggest (I'm not that much of an expert )
Edit: Though i wish someone had a solution for me not being able to restore via CWM!
oh you dont want suggestions from me - I have that device for a couple of days only and dont even know how to properly make a backup
but I chose the following:
EXT 4
Pauls Kernel
Left out all the LG Stuff as I find it kinda useless and laggy
good luck!

Nevermind guys, I fixed it. Turned out the problem WAS with date & time. My provider made the date 12/05/'11 instead of 12/04/'11. It was why I couldnt download from the market. Thank you all for helping out anyway
Hi all,
Had my GS a few weeks now but am in a bit of a predicament. When I received this phone I thought that Three had announced the availability of Gingerbread. However, I had not realised that to update the phone with Kies would require that I had a landline broadband connection as I use the phone with usb tethering for my internet use. This being the case I contacted Three who told me I could take the phone into a certain Car Phone Warehouse that has a service center. I had to leave my phone with them the whole day and when I collected it, they had flashed a rom which is not one of Three's and also took me back from 2.2.1 to 2.2. I also no longer have an option in Settings>About phone, for Check for updates.
I have since used super one click and managed to root it (my first time rooting) and done a backup of /efs as I read that is good as it contains IMEI info etc. Also now have Titanium Backup Pro and done a batch backup of all user apps & system data.
Phone has become quite laggy but reading info on using a different kernel it didn't seem to make sense to do that until after updating the rom.
Is there anything here to explain what the rom file name convention means please? I found the following link on here to the stock firmwares but don't know how to differentiate between the rom names? i.e. how do the following two differ?

Is it possible to root gingerbread 2.3.4 after flashing to one of the above?
As I rely on the phone as my only way to connect to the internet should I also do a Nandroid backup? I've only heard a little of this, my understand is, this is a way of creating an image of the phone as it is now so that it can be re-imaged from this somehow if something goes wrong? Any guides on creating a Nandroid backup please? This isn't the name of an App is it, rather a term or something to do with using terminal?
Am guessing I need to move my Titanium Backup files from /mnt/sdcard/TitaniumBackup somewhere else before flashing or does that not wipe this area?
I've downloaded odin from the thread above so I have v1.82 along with the 3 .pit file versions.
Is there anything else I should do or need before proceeding?
Thanks in advance for any assistance with my understanding of this.

Nandroid backup is a name of app which you can use for complete ROM backup useful in times of complete crash.
Just be careful when flashing. Normally it shouldn't screw up your phone but you need to be careful and ALWAYS read the Instructions in full. I have seen people ruining their phones just because they never read the what they were supposed to BEFORE starting.
All the best!
Thanks for the info.
I've found this guide now to Nandroid, which says the easiest way to get it onto the phone is to install ClockworkMod Rom Manager from the Android Market. I'd previously been looking for Nandroid in the Market.

Trouble is when auto detecting my model it gives a couple that could relate to my model and I don't know what the difference is...
Galaxy S i9000
Galaxy S i9000 (MTD)
Does anyone know what the significance of the MTD is please?
Use the one without mtd as that is the originak international version....
..::XDA RocK::..
Hi
Thanks, I did some googling and came to the same conclusion, I think the MTD has something to with Cyanogen.
Anyways, am stuck at the moment at the next snag now in that I appear to have the more recent version of recovery i.e. the 3e instead of 2e needed.
This guide says I need to flash a custom rooted kernel (a CF-Root one) but my Menu > Settings > About Phone, ‘Build Number’ says ‘FROYO.NEJP5’ and I can't see which is the corresponding CF-Root kernel.
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-samsung-galaxy-s-i9000/

Besides I am still on the original file system also and would prefer to be on ext4 to fix lag.
More rethinking required.
You dont nid root to flash a new firmware such as the jvq gingerbread.... If u flashed that u cn hav both ext4 and root support for ure fne so why dnt u flash ure fne to 2.3.4 first then root then ext 4 it.... Step by step i guess
..::XDA RocK::..
Prior to this thread I had read the following advice that before you do anything, you should back up your /efs folder containing not least your IMEI info.
http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s-a...d-19-18-pm-est-apr-08-2011-major-cleanup.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859914&highlight=restore+imei
To do that requires root as I understand and whilst the above suggests that on 2.2 you should use z4root, I actually used super one click which worked and has an unroot option too.
I also wanted to be rooted because I already lost my user apps and data when it was flashed to 2.2 by the service center and concluded that the only decent back up apps all required root.
I wish I had rooted while I had the carrier version of 2.2.1 on my phone and made a Nandroid backup of that so I could return the phone to that state in case of warranty issues. I never foresaw that the service center would flash a non carrier branded type rom onto it.
Although I'm not overly keen on 2.2 or the lag issue, it works and therefore I think the prudent thing to do is do a Nandroid backup of this so I can at least get back to this if something ever goes wrong. However, I think I have read somewhere that Nandroid requires the ext4 file system too, so I think I need a kernel that does this as well as one that has recovery 2e and all for my existing 2.2 rom.
I don't know how already being rooted or that busybox is already installed (think either super one click did that or titanium backup) affects flashing a new kernel?
Since reading some other threads of people who have flashed up to 2.3.x this was prior to it being officially released in the UK and I see some now wanting to get back to 2.2.x so they can update to the official release.
So it might be better to get things to a state where I can upgrade to that via Kies in an internet cafe or something.
Anyways have a bit of a headache now so not doing any more today.
Completely rom'd, kernel'd and flashed out.
Just a quick update as I had to give up on Kies in the end.
However, I did discover, for others like me without a separate broadband connection, enabling the Mobile AP and connecting the phone in Kies mode was possible, whereas the usb tethering is not. This allowed Kies to recognise that an update was available and also downloaded it. I had to use an app from the Market Place called Spoof FW prior to connecting the phone to the laptop which allowed me to choose my carrier so that Kies offered the correct download.
I then had a problem that the phone wouldn't flip modes from Kies to the download mode but instead would hang in the Kies preparing firmware process. I deleted a couple of thumbnail picture files that had long file name extensions and did a factory reset and then kies was able to change the phone into download mode. However, at this point, perhaps because the laptop I was using is old and only has the old usb ports it would then report that it didn't recognise the usb device or crash device manager.
Anyway for now I have given up on the carrier rom option and opted for an Odin flash of JVQ and CF-Root 3.7.
Phone is now a lot faster than Froyo 2.2 and next on the agenda is to use the CF-Root addon for converting to ext4. The only downside I've found so far with JVQ is the usb tethering is flawed, either doesn't recognise that the usb is connected or seems to freeze net comms over the usb service after only a short time. Mobile AP seems to work so I have a pci wireless card coming to upgrade the desktop PC.
Hope the usb tethering gets fixed in the next Android release but hopefully for now I can manage.
So Bell Canada and Samsung both have terrible technical support.
My phone is i9000m, Bell Canada, running 2.3.3 (UGKG3). It had 2.2 in the box, and I upgraded through kies pretty recently.
Since the upgrade I have a few new problems that I didn't have before:
-GPS, which used to give me useful and reasonably accurate tracks for my walks and bike rides now spits out a bunch of garbage.
-Download mode still works, but recovery mode doesn't.
-Serious power drain under "Android OS." Upwards of 90% in an hour. Goes away if I kill "google services."
Do a factory reset if you haven't done one already. Most of the time that clears up any update bugs...

Anyone have any other ideas???
New issue:

If I could find a rom that fills all my needs better than stock 2.2, I'd be all over it. I have a lengthy list of requirements though, and warranty eligibility is in the top 3 (especially if I defenestrate the thing).
Can anybody recommend a rom with bluetooth working for wiimote and keyboards, netflix working smoothly (2.2 doesn't, stock 2.3.3 does), good power consumption, and stability?
In the mean time, I'm still dealing with the other issues outlined in this thread.
Flashing a custom rom would almost definately sort all your problems. As to which rom, you seem perfectly capable of reading. If you are worried about warranty, you can simply flash back to stock...........

For me that`s a last-ditch solution. I`m usually in a hurry when I break a phone and I`d want to be able to just plop it down at the bell booth during the work day, rather than taking it home first and flashing it (assuming it`s not broken beyond that point).
Hi,
I recommend you to try perform a Hard Reset with code *2767*3855# in dialer ( formats also your internal SD), flash the phone again (better with Odin) with a "standard" version.
Optional make a new Hard Reset (in special if didn't repartition the phone).
After that you can use a custom rom if you want. In past I used DocRambone rom, but now I preffer S.U.R.F.A.C.E. rom with Hardcore kernel and GO Launcher. GPS, phone, browser ....running without problems and battery keeps me over 50 h of medium use without GPS.
Tried hard reset and flashing the same stock 2.3.3 UGKG3 rom. No change. Still can't get into recovery mode, still crap gps, still 10 second lag between button press and screen on, still crazy battery drain.
Rolled back to 2.2, everything works except recovery mode and having weird problems with market imagining that I have apps I've never even looked at before and difficulty downloading. Market cache clear doesn't help. Hard reset doesn't help.
Upgraded through kies to UGKG3 again. Same problems as before, but market works at least. If no solutions available today, I'm taking it to Bell for service and maybe exchange. If that doesn't resolve I'll flash a custom rom.

New update...
GPS borked entirely this time. Gets a fix, but the fix doesn't follow me. If I run My Tracks, it just stays in a 10 meter area while I walk in a 4km circle away from and back to that area.

Phone was sent in for repairs and returned to me this morning. GPS still broken (completely, no signal period). Everything else seems fine.
the issues you are having suggest to me the problem is with the KG3 stock rom.
Before getting even more frustrated with both your phone and Bell, I would advocate:
1. do a complete phone clean with sd card reformat (sent you a pm with a link)
2. flash the stock JVR pda in odin and also flash the KG3 modem and CSC at the same time
3. you are then still on stock Samsung, official firmware and within warranty even if that firmware has yet to be released in Canada
4. then if you want you can still flash a custom JVR kernel and a custom JVR rom if you want to improve performance and/or alter features beyond stock

Thanks for your help. I'll look into it.
Before I do that, do you or anyone else have the stock settings under *#*#3214789650#*#* (AngryGPS)??? The settings for the SUPL Settings section are all BLANK!!! I can only assume the rest of the settings in AngryGPS are too. That seems bad.
