i9000m 2.3.3 root question - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all!
I just got a Galaxy S i9000m, it came stock (unrooted).
I've been reading + searching trying to find out how I can root this then flash a different rom. I'm a little confused in finding the easiest way to do this.
My phone stats from the settings:
-Firmware 2.3.3
-Baseband I9000UKGKG3
-Kernel 2.6.35.7 I9000UKGKG3 [email protected] #2
-Build GINGERBREAD.GKG3
I can press the volume up+down + power on and get into the recovery menu
I can also do the volume down + power and get into the download screen.
Can someone link me to where the tutorial for this is? I've found the cf root thread, but I don't know where to dl ODIN.
Also, since I can get into recovery (3 button method) can I just flash the update .zip to root?
Thanks for any input you can give me.

Download Odin 1.85 here
Just flash ChainFire's kernal with Odin and it should have busybox and superuser pre-installed along with root. Just make sure you use the right kernal CF made for 2.3.3
I have the same phone as you, and it also came as 2.3.3 UGKG3 stock, but what I did was just flash it to JVT 2.3.5 and used ChainFire's kernal for 2.3.5 root and then speedmod since I wasn't sure if ChainFire's kernal for 2.3.3 would work with UGKG3 since it's the North American version.

double post.

Thanks for your reply!
I'm sorry I tried to follow your steps but I'm lost could you provide me with some links ?
I'm trying to follow your instructions but Chainfire's thread doesn't list what kernels are JVT 2.3.5 are these kernels the same as speedmod? I'm sorry I'm a total noob!
I tried these .tar files http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756 but all that keeps happening is that my galaxy stays in the boot screen.
I tried this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211939 , and it doesn't seem to be a full root because when i try and get into cwm it says E;cannot mount etc..
What am I doing wrong or missing?

[Q] Rooted fine, but I can't lag fix due to issues

Hey guys,
I rooted my I9000 running froyo:
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9
PDR: I9000XXJP3
Phone: I9000XXJP2
CSC: I9000XXXJP3
by using Super One Click and it rooted fine and installed superuser. Now I was hoping to use the Vodoo Lagfix for Froyo using the update.zip method but I needed 2e but I had 3e. So I found CF-Root, but I didn't know which one to use for my phone. Somewhere along the line, I decided to try and use Odin to just use the .tar file to do the lagfix, but it required my phone to go into download mode. You see, when I was running eclair, I was able to do the three button boot to recovery, but after using Keis and getting Froyo, I havn't been able to boot in recovery or get my phone into download mode. <--- Download mode is required for me to use Odin right?
So please help a beginner ^^
Hey guys I did some more hard out searching and found this which was able to fix my 3 button boot issue.

[Q] root 2.2.1

how do i root 2.2.1 xxjpy gt i9000?? going
flash a custom kernel like speedmod with odin
http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010/11/samsung-galaxy-s-speedmod-kernel.html
and root in recovery
You can flash CF-Root via Odin as a PDA. Obviously, make sure your in download mode on your phone first.
Use the search function!
SuperOneClick by ShortFuse here from xda forum. Works great, also with 2.2.1 (used it with JPY, too).

[Q] Quick JUWE 5.2 Question

Hi All,
I'm pretty new flashing custom firmware and have only done about 2-3 full firmware flashes to my phone. I had ran a few searches but haven't found an exact answer. Is it safe to flash directly to JUWE 5.2 from CWM (Gingerbread JVK 2.3.3) without upgrading to JVQ first? On JUWE's Rom forum it states, from gingerbread that you can just update through CWM, but on his extended installation guide, it states a few things differently. Specs below:
Bell Mobility I9000m Vibrant
Model Number:GT-I9000
Firmware Version:2.3.3
Baseband Version:I9000UGKC1 (Flashed this separately when I first installed GB due to poor signal.)
Kernel Version:2.6.35.7-I9000XXJVK-CL75655 se infra SEI-28 #2
Build Number:GINGERBREAD.XXJVK
CWM 3.0.0.5
Rooted
Any information at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to all!
yes u can upgrade directly but in juwe's manual he clearly states that u go to stock jvq first before u flash his rom.. follow the manual, its safer..
Ok, so the safest option (which is what I'm looking for), would be to flash the stock JVQ with Odin and then Use Odin again to flash JUWE's tar file by placeing it in the PDA section of odin.
I'm on Juwe's 5.2,
1) you need to Flash Stock JVQ with Gingerbread bootloaders , there are a few threads on dev part of SGS forum
2) then you need a kernel that has CWM recovery [because you install Juwe's rom, through the CWM] - you can use Chainfire's JVQ kernel for that
3) Copy Juwe's Rom on your internal SD and install through CWM, but clear cache and such
My personal recommendation is not to be afraid to try. If the 3-button combination works it is very hard to brick your SGS, so just follow install guides to the letter and all will be great.

New Roms

sorry for the newb questions, but i am finding way to much cross references for rooting and unlocking a bell vibrant could someone help me out I would like to put on a new rom pls.
1. Go to this thread and download JVT. Flash JVT with Odin and make sure re-partition is checked.
2. Go to this thread and download the CF-Root kernel for JVT. Flash the kernel with Odin
3. You should now have stock 2.3.5 with root and CWM installed. Reboot into recovery and use CWM to flash whatever custom ROM you want.
thanks very much just finished and it worked out very well.
2.3.5 and 2.3.6 why not jvu semaphore kernel 2.5.0 and @ oserx o.7.1 rum is the best and fastest rom I had
